Title: If Bitcoin goes past $5000, what will the Chinese government do?
Post by: btbrae on September 27, 2017, 11:10:50 AM
1) Double down and ban anybody talking about Bitcoin, Litecoin in public areas. Offer rewards to anybody who reports a person talking about crypto in private discussion.

2) Organize a small collective of dodgy individuals to release a competing Bitcoin clone, and call it something like Bitcoin Credits, and attempt to take control of Bitcoin via the back door...

3) Throw everybody who visits coinmarketcap.com in jail.

5) Meet with world leaders to discuss this new form of financial terrorism and instigate a coordinated and sophisticated global response.

6) Get home at night and login to LocalBitcoins.com to buy Bitcoin...

china is good in copying others idea, so the best they can do is that they introduce their own virtual currency into market and then make other currencies illegal.

none of the above because China doesn't care about bitcoin as much as the media has been showing it to be like in the past month. and i assure you that soon enough things will go back to normal and everyone will forget about China until another price correction is needed then FUD machines start up again.

your picture captions should be this:
the cute train: whales who bought bitcoin from weak hands
the angry red train: newbies who had weak hands and sold their coins cheap just because of some random FUD.

You seem to suggest that the government is taking a sadistic  approach towards Cryptocurrency matter. I suspected as much.
However people need to understand that Chinese government isn't a tyrannical one. The government is likely more democratic than Russian government. Its Citizens wish aren't violated that much.. the government just block what it deems unlawful,  if you successfully access it, the govt might know but ignore you and patch things up quickly..the government wouldn't just hunt you  down as outsiders may think.

You give us wrong options.China government is troll. They won't do shit when bitcoin is above 5000$(which it will be soon after October 1st).Chinese people on the other hand will choose the 6th option and buy bitcoins on localbitcoins ::) That is the only option that will be left for them once the china exchanges are gone for good.

They really don't care if the price goes over $5000 or not. That will not change anything for them, they want control and will continue to try and exert that whatever the price is. In the end, it doesn't change anything, the Chinese people will still use Bitcoin whatever measure their government tries to prevent it.

First of all China didn't ban Bitcoin, they are only planning to shut Bitcoin exchanges. You might not be able to buy and sell your Bitcoin through fiat. But online, there is no restriction. Soon they'll be launching their own cryptocurrency that can be easily converted to fiat. Thus. what all Chinese people need to do is to buy Government's cryptocurrency through fiat and then trade it for Bitcoin. This way government can easily keep a watch on the money flow. I think this is all what they want. They aren't going to take any extreme step against Bitcoin as mentioned in OP. They have much more important things to look into.

it sounds almost like a trope at this point, but i could actually see that happening. theres actually no downsides (for the chinese government) to china creating and mandating the use of their cryptocurrency in the future. they can create it however they want that would give them unlimited access to the finances of their citizens, track everyone's daily dealings, and most importantly, maintain control over their currency. in a digital world, this is actually their ideal solution. the only problem is international trade when other countries decide they dont want to accept china coin or whatever in their trade deals.

none of the above because China doesn't care about bitcoin as much as the media has been showing it to be like in the past month. and i assure you that soon enough things will go back to normal and everyone will forget about China until another price correction is needed then FUD machines start up again.

it's a never ending cycle here, the fudsters are managing to keep this china thing alive for quite a while this time around though. unfortunately.

this exactly. 5000 usd isnt some magical point or something, its probably that nothing will happen. in any case, we did either break or come very close to 5000 a few weeks ago, i wasn't really keeping track.

If that should happen, in which is not far from happening because looking at how bright the price had shown and the tenacity it has shown I am sure it will get there. What the Chinese will do, they surely have a lot of weapons in their arsenal to unleash on bitcoin and the crypto industry but I dont see them fighting back immediately rather wait till when the whole industry will be settled to come in. I see them attacking using the any options such as

1. Going after mining farms with the thinking that they make bitcoin available either to sell or to ensure transaction are confirmed or not.

2. A massive crackdown on individuals still finding their way to use bitcoin and also might come out to say emphatically they are stopping bitcoin and every thing we have been hearing and acting upon, are merely rumors.

I was just surprised how we reacted to the whole China closing exchanges news.

They are just one country and like other say, they will be forgotten soon enough.

The momentum that Bitcoin will unleash soon enough will indeed make this moment insignificant.

China has do what it wants, the whole world can see that Bitcoin is needed and will adopt.

It's because investors had this narrative of "1 billion people adopting bitcoin", and were ignoring that China had banned merchants from accepting bitcoin as far back as 2014, so adoption was never going to happen there. Once the price rose and people started using it for capital flight, they were bound to crack down on the exchanges too.

And this price corrections, new implementations, new rules and the upcoming bancassurance of china will benefit us as a whole. If we are thinking it in a way how other ICO run the money without the things that they have promised to do then it's better to so price corrections. BTC holds so much power that this power can be used by others to scam people and I think (it's a mixed emotion of China for like envy in cryptocurrencies and their care on the people who got scammed by ICO). They have take advantage on the disadvantage and they've made it personal.

We got a long way ahead and no matter what they will throw (to BTC and some alts ) as long as the technology aint broken no one can stop this ride.

If bitcoin passed the 5000 usd mark, i think china might still continue with their ban, depending in ts upcoming elections, but it they had lift their ban, for sure bitcoin will rise futther in value. I think it will really not bother china at all, if we look back, china did have a lot of miners, i think their government alrrady had enough bitcoin for themselves, and will probably still hodl them if it breaks 5000 usd, still it will be win-win situation for them, since what we arr hearing and reading, is that the chinese only banned and not dumped bitcoins, in turn they mght be the country that hodled a large amount of bitcoin. Let's just hope that the chinese will soon lift their ban, since it will not only benefit the bitcoin community but theur country as well.

OP, nothing will change. China's attempts to ban it is to show their people that they are still in control of the financial system. Bitcoin is something more than a cryptocurrency. What it represents is freedom and the people's emancipation from the traditional banking system.

I truly believe that the Chinese government sees Bitcoin as something like a national threat so they cannot allow it to gain traction.

I am not totally agree with your points. I don't think china care about crypt currencies like bitcoins. Maybe they don't take any action because its already banned in china. I think china needs to rethink on their decisions and should take steps to rather promote bitcoins in a positive way.

There's only so far you can go with banning. If you ban something you still can't make it go away. They've closed down their exchanges, so there's only one more thing they could do to fight cryptocurrencies and that is making it illegal to own. It would of course make them a laughing stock and people wouldn't just throw away their coins because they suddenly became illegal and they'd have to throw it away since they can't exchange it :D

Chinese government does not care if Bitcoin goes to $5,000 or $500,000.

They just want their people to stop laundering money to buy real estate in the West, which the Western governments are urging the Chinese people to do, by offering residency visas to those who bring (launder) over $X.

I have a similar view. I always thought Chinese price manipulations are don by some government officials. They are smart. They saw how market reacts to news and they've tested it when they issued their first bans in 2014. When the price has recovered and reached another high they knew it's the right time to hit it again and buy the dip. If I'm right they stacked up at $3000 lows and are slowly selling it now at $4000.

Maybe the chineses bought a lot of bitcoins, and they will earn a lot of money when the price goes up again, i remember that i saw a chart last week that it said that the most trading volume in BTC were from China, so i guess that they were buying a lot of it. Anyway, i think that probably we will see $4500 tomorrow (30-09), and if we hear good news from china, then the price might go to $5k again.

$5000 seems just to be an arbitrary number.

Plus bitcoin price isn't the thing that matters here. What matters is that how many people are using bitcoin. If too many people are using bitcoin in China then i really think that there is a possibiltiy that China may try to ban bitcoin outright.

But right now, i think they're going to stay put even if bitcoin price went up significantly. They've already done a lot of damage by banning ICOs and shutting down exchanges.

China going to accept the truth that they cannot manipulate bitcoin after the series failed attempts that they have done after that, they will buy a huge percentage of bitcoin and start to hoard to recover their lost OR they will just going to declare economic war on all Asian nations that are adopting bitcoin because they are not done yet.

okay i will coment what's in my opinion about six options above.

start with number one, i think this is so copious dude. that's right it make all people will be afraid and stay away from bitcoin (all about it) but i think there would occur disintegrate between people there.  so china government will not do that.

second,  if china really do that i think they should be shame after banning bitcoin then try to compete bitcoin with bad 'trick'

third,  it is what kids do.. lawyers would get so many job if china really do this.

forth,  you are forget with this number

fifth, in my point of view it is possible because so far china government do everything try to collapse bitcoin. so mark bitcoin as a new form of terrorism to world leaders attract them to against bitcoin together.

six, lol i like this ;D

the government doesn't care about price as much as you may think. what they are concerned about is the usage of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and the new ways these things have created for illegal activities. such as the ICO scamming that has been going on or all the other altcoins that are created and scam people or even the illegal activities that are performed using the anonymous coins. these are the real concerns not the price of bitcoin.

Honestly, they will not be angry on it as we all know chinese government and China is rich when it comes to money and profit, but surely they will check these things and how will they adjust on this kind of technology. In my opinion , they will cpntinue the banning despite the upsurge that bitcoin will get for the following month. Well, we should observe on their next steps and decisions about bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

I think the government will not lift a finger eventhough the price rose to $5000 or more. They have made their decisions and they will look silly if they make a sudden U-turn because just the price peak. And they don't care about their citizens as well. Its the citizens who are the victims here and might be shaking their heads already seeing the price is gaining once more. But I'm sure that they are willing in their power to once again trade outside of China. They are losing everyday in they can't do trading.

The very point of concurrency is decentralization. This is a threat to the Chinese government as it may have the potential to replace the yuan. One train of though is that the ban is a sign that China is giving up on trying to regulate bitcoin and just decided to wipe out its existence instead. If this is the case then, if the value of the bitcoin continuous to rise then stricter measures will be imposed to ban it. So i would say options (1) one and (2) two.

Another train of thought is that the "ban" is how they manipulate cryptocurrencies and if that's the case then option (6) six.

However, my bet is on options (1) one and (2) two because I truly believe that cryptocurrency is a threat to them since their economy relies heavily on government intervention and thus their failure to regulate cryptocurrencies forced them to impose drastic measures to protect themselves.

I think china government will not do anything besides bitcoin has already reach $5000. If china ban bitcoin maybe because they want to preserve the currency they are using and doesn't want crypto currencies enter their economy. There is also a chance tgat china will introduce their own crypto currency no one knows whats their government is planning to do

I think they will continue to do whatever they are doing or they have to do.  I think  Chinese government have their own plan and is unaffected by the price of Bitcoin.  They can probably look into the case of Bitcoin on how it goes up like that and probably will design a bitcoin like currency but this time it is centralized and not open blockchain.  Privacy and Security as they call it.

If you ask me, China will be back before bitcoins will become worth 5k dollars. Just think about those whales of China who invested big amounts in bitcoins. Do you think that they have left it already? Obviously no. Many Chinese would be still dealing in bitcoins in some secret ways. Moreover, abandoning bitcoins like this is not a new thing from this country.

It is beginning to give me concern the sort of ideas and opinions sometimes even senior members of the forum expresses! Now what has China got to do with Bitcoin getting to $5000 or not? Is Bitcoin one of China's natural resources or product from one of the factories sited there? I guess it's high times all these undue importance being attached to China's Bitcoin interest is done away with, because Bitcoin is and never going to be all about China.

In my own opinion, I think Chinese Government is really eager to their power to take control for the monetary policies and the money flow in China. They are surely eager to lock out bitcoin from accessing this country( vice versa , chinese accessing bitcoin in general). Secret transaction may not also happen because chinese government when some technology exploit their secure control on their citizen just like bitcoin.

If Bitcoin goes past $5000 the Chinese government will probably smile because they started the FUD with the ban and then probably bought the dip. That's how these govts and too big to fail banks work.

They have actually said that they have no intentions at all in banning Bitcoins. News came out days ago that they will be applying regulations for cryptocurrencies in general. They will be classified under 'digital assets', whatever that means. There's a lot of love-hate going on.

Nothing at all. They can't really do anything, and the best thing that they can actually do is to start accepting btc in hopes of getting some for themselves.

China doesn't like the idea of having bitcoin maybe because their government does not want any currency to rule their economy but as we all know China is one of the best known when it comes to copying I'll be not surprise if one day they will create their own crypto currency that they will introduce and will likely to be adopt in their market.

The Chinese government has already allegedly announced the legislative settlement since October 1 of the circulation of the crypto currency, so it is no longer intended to prohibit it. We can say that the crypto currency in China has won. The Chinese government was never able to bring its threats into execution. I hope that after this beatkoinu and other kriptovaljute already nothing will prevent to rise sharply in a course.

We do not know the real purpose of china by stopping the ICOs and Exchanger in their country. They are likely planning to make their own Coins and make the Bitcoins illegal, And other top Altcoins. But this is my only opinion and I may be wrong with what I said. But why would they stop it? Now they know that this is good for the people of their country. What is their purpose?

They will Re-open exchanges partially owned by the government to take a share of the money.  Everything is about money.  They have lost so much with these exchanges being operated by third parties, they are taking the control back. ICO's will become regulated and the ban will be lifted.

If that could happen then that's China's one of their "big shot" . What US and Europe's hot, Chinese give them a big shot or do counterpart to there billion of citizens has to offer. Bitcoin's trending price was eyeing on China and supposedly make a strategic plan on how to kick-out bitcoin in China as it gives a threat when their citizens are hooked into and starting to unpatronized their own currency. Millions of Chinese are now engaging bitcoin transactions , but Chinese government has not taken the direct benefit from bitcoin as they can't take control of it. Making and developing alternative coin to bitcoin is their best option, in which China has a direct control of it. IMHO, Bitcoin and ICOs to China were started to ban during the launching period of NEO, coincedence isin't it ? i doubt that these NEO could be the China's Bitcoin. If that price soar high as 5k, Chinese don't care anymore as long as their Chinese altcoin's price were stable too.

By the way, I was wondering, where is the No.4 option?  ::)

bitcoin price has always had an overall trend that nothing can change. it will stay on that path which is a rising trend. what we see in the news and everyone gets excited about are the short term and temporary changes swinging the price up pr down for a short time before things go back to normal.
whether China does weird stuff or not, price will go back to the normal state and continue on it.

The Chinese government is an expert at price and currency manipulation, and they use it for profit over and over.

This has no long-term or seriously threatening effects on Bitcoin however, or any new technologies.

Very unlikely. They are anti-bitcoin so doing something like this would essentially mean that they are endorsing bitcoin, which is something that they do not want to do. They are much more likely to ban mining than to do this.

We've hit $5000 before, and China didn't do anything. So even if they have a trigger price where they just start banning everything bitcoin related, it's evidently not $5000.

I think they'll stay put and do nothing, honestly. They've already shut down ICOs which is a huge deal in China, as well as BTCChina and ViaBTC exchange, which again, a huge deal.

china is good in copying others idea, so the best they can do is that they introduce their own virtual currency into market and then make other currencies illegal.
Obviously, according to news sources, they are already on such a project and will introduce their own virtual currency in market in the name of virtual property.
Even after chinas's ban on cryptocurrency exchanges, bitcoin price is not likely to fall, it is still stable.
In future if the value of bitcoin passes $5000, china might be showing their envy over bitcoin aroused by cryptocurrency traders.

They will not give it another thought until they have another reg change come through and then they will make a choice and move on to important things, just like now.

North Korea might be able to enforce whatever the threadstarter has mentioned but you might see an island wide protest if China tries to do that. Anyway on a more serious note, there's no government that doesn't like money so saying things like they hate Bitcoin is just bull****. The cryptocurrency industry is a multi-billion (or even trillions) industry. They just need regulations to "keep things under control" :P

Are you thinking that they are not caring the bitcoin now. I don't agree that at all because the miners machines supply is widely taken part from that country only. Even in trading also they are been involved widely. So their country investors should go out the China or they should make the bitcoin as legal money. Hope any of one will happen for sure.

China is good in copying others idea, so the best they can do is that they introduce their own virtual currency into market and then make other currencies illegal.

There is a big possibility for this because the government of China is really very wary of Bitcoin because this is something they find it hard to control and manipulate. We all know that the Chinese government controlled almost everything in China and though they are not anymore as communist as before still the government made it sure that they are at the top of all things at all times and in all situations -- anything or anybody who might challenge that grip in power can be endanger of state action. And that is what happened with Bitcoin in China last month.

The Chinese government appreciate and knows the full potential of the blockchain technology they just hate Bitcoin. And because of this there is a strong possibility that soon they would have their own state-controlled and backed cryptocurrency that is pegged to their own national fiat currency.

Good thing that now the market has fully ignored the weight of China's withdrawal from Bitcoin and cryptocurrency...thanks to the leadership of Japan and other Asian countries Bitcoin remains to be prosperous and is now surging in value.

5000$ is just an arbitrary value and it signifies for nothing except for maybe psychological barrier that some people have in their heads. I believe that Chinese government will regulate the domestic market and possibly introduce mandatory fee for the Chinese exchanges since they cannot afford to be left behind which would inevitably happen if they would to totally ban the operation of their own exchanges.

I think China will accept Bitcoin again. Because China has a large population. If the government doesn't give them any job so it will affect the country's economy. But it is not possible to ensure all the people's job. That way they have to find out an alternative to reduce their unemployment. And Bitcoin can be the alternative.

I think that China will take bitcoin after a while, but it will not necessarily happen when reaching the mark of 5000 dollars. It takes time for more countries to accept bitcoin and allow the population to earn money

Yes, I agree with you. China will accept Bitcoin. But it is not a matter to reach Bitcoin at $5000. China needs more time to legalize Bitcoin. Just wait and see what will happen.

They wont do anything,  as they have clearly banned the circulation of cryptos in exchanges! Maybe they'll start studying new possibilities where they can incorporate cryptos, or create their own virtual currency. If they are going to create their virtual currency, maybe BTC will have a big competitor, because China has a good number of people using BTC, and surely they'll adopt their virtual also, in order to not fall behind.

I guess the Chinese government is not much concerned about the exchange rates. They just want to end Chinese citizens from using Bitcoins, and they have achieved this target up to a certain level, by banning the BTC vs CNY trade. If Bitcoin crosses the $5K mark, then the Chinese bitcoin users will be ruing at the lost opportunity. The government will be least bothered.

The bitcoin is going to go past 5000 this week. And China has helped this, and is going to help the appreciation of bitcoin. They will continue to regulate the Bitcoin and the bitcoin markets. This is in favour of Bitcoin, not against it (and of course in favor of China). China is a very progressist country and Bitcoin helps its economy. They are the biggest producers of the Bitcoin in the world, and I do not think they will do whatever action you have suggested. China is too big and too smart compared with all the remaining world.

It is just $100 to reach out that $5k price which would be considered the new ATH if the price would tend to break that and i would say Chinese cant do anything on this one.I did expect for this thing to happen because of the upcoming fork which people are now buying and accumulating bitcoin as much as they can so that they would able to earn more free coins on bitcoin gold.

They won't do anything. Their ban is temporary, so if BTC continues to be around in a year or two the ban will be lifted, regardless of the price. That is of course as long as there are no crazy fluctuations like +/- 30% value every few months. That could make the government more cautious. I think for now they are more scared of people laundering money with BTC than they are greedy, so the ban will stay regardless of the price.

I haven't heard about them planning to ban cryptos. This is speculation based on Putin's speech:
Russian president Vladimir Putin said in a meeting today that cryptocurrencies pose significant risks related fraud and money laundering.

They are thinking about regulating it. Some sources were saying they want to make their own government issued cryptocurrency. It's to early to say anything, for now there's no ban. Time will tell.

That's not going to happen, my friend, China when at the time they discuss that regulation, have thought about the consequences caused by their movement, as I see, China just trying to keep their economy controlled and get rid of bitcoin without even care about the value of bitcoin. That is so funny comparison you have made here. I laughed a lot and imagined how Chinese might be looking like at this current situation when bitcoin price is 5999 USD at current time stamp. They might have got big loss in the last month only and looking at current rate prople of china could not resist themselves but just abuse the whole system that is implemented as ban on bitcoin/ICO projects. So that is a good lesson to other countries which might just be thinking about putting down the ICO or bitcoin. They will now think twice before making such rude decisions.
