Title: This Forum is Looking More and More like 4chan
Post by: Ryland R. Taylor-Almanza on June 25, 2011, 05:55:01 PM
So many image posts and posts that are just completely nonconstructive! I've even seen the occasional "op is a faggot." This used to be a forum full of incredibly intelligent people!

Higher post count for newbies until something is better thought out.   Just allow the Newbie section to have two sections, maybe one tech side and the other currency.

Ha, for a second then I thought you were going to suggest splitting them into ultra-new and slightly-new.

It would be interesting to measure the growth of a Newbie into a regular member, but I have no doubt it would just be a race to get to the next level/board.  I think I just talked myself out of this idea lol

Haha!!!  Yes, let's bash newbies!  Blame it on the newbies!   :D

But seriously, for some reason I don't think a higher post count would not solve the issue.  Some very clever newbie troll managed to lure me into a debate on the newbie forum which took me all last night (I couldn't tell he genuinely had a misunderstanding of bitcoin which I was trying to correct, or if he was indeed a troll), which didn't end until he reached his 50 post count requirement and graduated.

So many image posts and posts that are just completely nonconstructive! I've even seen the occasional "op is a faggot." This used to be a forum full of incredibly intelligent people!

I don't know, I think many of the sarcastic image posts can be constructive.  Humor is often a great method to point out a flaw in reasoning or highlight a mistake.  Now the downright "op is a fagg*t" posts ofcourse don't belong, and those should be reported to the moderator automatically.

Just allow the Newbie section to have two sections, maybe one tech side and the other currency.

Hehe!!!  Yes!  We will give the newbie a new hoop to jump through every time they think they are about to graduate!  Let's humiliate them since they are newbies!  Again, it's not their fault, it's just that they are newbies.  :D

I like the idea of forcing the newbie to take a multiple choice test to ensure that they have some basic competency of bitcoin operations before they graduate.  Quesions like, "Assume that I have n GPU miners producing m Mhash's each and consume w Watts each and the exchange rate between USD and bitcoin is x USD/BTC, then what is my expected monthly profit for a month of 24/7 mining?"  Then they would have to look up some bitcoin mining calculator like http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php (http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php) to figure out the answer.  Then you get a special certificate next to your name in the forum, so that everyone else knows that you are not an idiot.  Then have other questions that would just take a simple lookup to the bitcoin FAQ to answer correctly.  (No essay ;) )

I am for testing, big time.

And while we are on the topic of newbies, I'd like to implement that testing to all countries, before people are allowed to have kids.  If you want them but don't pass the test, then you aren't allowed to use the hospital facilities to give birth.

Honestly the forum just needs more mods probably.  I really don't run into that much bad stuff outside of the Newbie forum.

How about bringing back the post rating system (just for applause, no smiting):

You can get out of the newbie zone once you have a certain amount of +1 rated posts.
You can only +1 a post if you're out of the newbie zone.

That way it's not just a matter of spamming your way to 50 or whatever the number is set at. They have to be good posts that a non-newbie will +1 you for.

It could still be set at just 5.

Wow, I like this idea a lot.  Except I am not sure how it fully works, so is it possible to set it, where any user can +1 another user on their profile page.  Every user would require X amount of +1's to get out of the Newbie forum.   And even a far lesser amount to get to post a topic, etc.

The newbies would just +1 each other. Trolls thrive in swarms.

+1 rule that only people outside the Newbie forum would be able to +1.  Make it enough numbers where you know members that have been around a while voted them up.

Also, have people accounted for, the +1 vote is not anonymous, it shows on both peoples profiles.

Meh, this sounds like a lot of bs editing of whatever forum script they use.

Votes alone won't work unless there are lots of people reviewing the newbie forum without forgetting to vote (and of course, you can't let newbies vote on other newbies, or else they'll soon form a jerkcircle to cum out)

I think enough regulars browse the Newbie forums.  If anything, you'd find people like me, who just get bored and like to see what is going on in that side.  I guess in the end alliances and what not could form lol, but it is a decent idea for now (that seems like it might be complicated to implement).

Maybe the opposite, have a non-shown smite system. When someone gets enough smites for troll/spam posts, they can only make 1 or so posts a day. It'd be nice to have less of a barrier to entry since some people have constructive things to say.

ANY forum becomes more like 4chan as time passes, l2internet newfag!!!

This is the state of the human species at this point, these are the behavior and traits we expose when we gather up in the virtual world.

Perhaps you forget what happens when we gather in the real world:

Now, stop posting nonconstructive flaming crap on the forum and find uses to improve yourself as a being!

PS: op is a faggot!

I don't think my post was nonconstructive. This thread actually produced a few good ideas.

Just because Canada can't handle losing a sports game doesn't mean the rest of the world is 4chan irl.

I'm still well under 50 posts. I must have gotten whitelisted at some point. Anyway, post counts are a terrible metric to use to try to bring up the quality of a forum. It's just a mechanism to make sock puppet-creation painful.

If we want better, more substantive threads, we need some kind of regulation... stricter rules, subforums with strong enforcement of subject matter, mods carrying bigger hammers, that kind of thing. I don't know if all that effort would be worth it.

Name 10 differences between you and a canadian. We're the same people that split over 15.000 years ago from Africa. We have a lot in common. We find it easier to steal, destroy and deface things than to build them.

I think the main difference between America and Canada is that America goes to other countries to steal, destroy, and deface them. And our riots overseas last 10+ years. Top that Mr. America's Hat!  :P

That was not my request. I asked what is different between you as an individual and a canadian citizen. Do you have 3 balls and he has just one?

Also, that picture is not from Canada, it's from Europe G20 summit. The idea is we share some common psychological traits, and we tend to converge onto using them when we gather up en masse.

That means "this forum" is not a specific case of a forum becoming vandalized by anonymous users akin to how 4chan boards operate, but "any forum" will converge to the same quality and flow of content.

I can think of plenty of long-running forums that haven't started turning into 4chan.

Why? Because moderators flail the banhammer all the time?
