Title: How safe is exchange?
Post by: AA_Bitcoin on November 07, 2017, 08:48:37 PM
Hi,

Every exchange adding a new btc, eth, token address on the exchange website.
I think they need some private key to set the transaction on this websites.

So is this private key stored in a normal database?
And is this safe?

It is safe for whales who don't care much if they lose their coins. Rule is to leave only the coins you are trading with on the exchange, anything long term should be put into a proper wallet off the exchanges.

They can shut down any time and all your coins will be lost!

But do they store the private key in a normal database?

you can google MT.Gox  :o and then research on ledgerwallet but if u want to trade cryptocurrencies ,mostly you can't avoid touching exchanges no matter how unsafe they are

Generally, the private keys are kept by the exchanges stuffs or managers, there are risks that the exchanges will take away your coins, but I think some big exchange will not do that since they can make great profit to keep the exchange safe, instead of taking the coins away for a short time profit.

These private keys are handled by staff and key member of the exchanges. However I do not trust keeping my coins at any exchange as there is always a slight risk of loosing the coins that you keep in the exchanges.

Exchanges were never safe. It's pretty high risk to stora at any exchange big amount of money. It could be closed/hacked/scammed any time. The absent of hacks in past is not a good reason to store your funds there.

Yes. More profitable is keeping the exchange alive then just run with coin belong to its user. So choose exchange also important.
Dont just user exchanger service that has no popularity.

what exchange do you mean? Etherdelta and idex have private key on your own. I think they are safe, I used them both for trading eth token, It is automated exchangers. The worst at etherdelta is that the price is low at the token lauch at first week, I don't know why, I bought tokens from ICO, when traded in etherdelta the price is under the ico price. May be some bounty hunters or hackers dump the tokens.

It’s not safe to keep your holding on exchanges for long time even exchanges don’t recommend that most of the time I keep tokens in etherdelta because i will be holding private key of the account . But it is almost similar to keeping it in myetherwallet and sending to exchanges but bit easy and bit faster

But you must be carefull, because your computer can be hacked also. Keep your private keys offline

An exchange is a server that will store your informations. So your coins and your private keys of the site will be stored on this site.

If the site is hacked or down, or stopped, you'll loose everything on it. It's different from a wallet, that allows you to use an interface between your computer and the blockchain, but the wallet doesn't store your information, it's just an interface.

Exchanges shouldn't be trusted as a long term storage solution for your coins just in case, are they safe from being hacked and funds stolen? they are targets and because of this many of the larger ones will have very good security in place and a process for backing up funds in cold storage etc so although there is a chance I would be shocked if they were hacked easily.

Title: Re: How safe is exchange?

Some exchanges are safer than others, but there is always a risk. It's not so much who holds the private key as whether the exchange gets hacked, shuts down, stops you withdrawing etc.
Best rule is just keep what you need for trading on the exchanges, everything else keep in your own wallet.

Exchanges are not safe! Depending on when you found out about Bitcoin, you might have heard of the infamous MTGox exchange. Long story short, it was hacked and all of the funds were compromised.. which in todays prices are worth several billions. The exchanges unfortunately store everything online, which means all your information is vulnerable to hackers, you should be very careful about trusting an exchange. The best thing you can do is to store only a small portion of your portfolio in these exchange and make sure that your main stack is somewhere stored offline. It's better to send a small portion of your portfolio and trade with margin, rather than risk sending everything. Some exchange are safer than others Gdax is doing great btw, but they are still vulnerable and there is always a first time for everything and everyone.

They are not safe. Arguably that's the pond in crypto world where a lot of black swans live. But the life is impossible without them. So there are 2 possible issues when speaking about exchanges:
1) MTGox case. When exchange goes to nirvana. Only inspiration can make you remove assets before their trip begins.
2) Someone can steal assets from your account, when exchange itself is working properly. Use 2FA.

Those trading sites like etherdelta which is decentralized is not that safe. You can just create a new wallet there and send the tokens to ensure safety. Giving your private key is a risk, you can lose all your money. We don't know how they store those keys.

It's really up to the person that is managing the website because they have the choice to run with your money. Use the popular exchanges because they are least likely to run away.

If you are a long term HODLer - put your coins in cold storage.. also removes temptation to sell early. Exchanges are honey pots for hackers. Also, I'm distrustful of software wallets. Paper or hardware wallets are safest.

good exchanges save coins on cold wallets
there are different tactics to make it safe
i think that its risky to save your coins on an exchange, but its better than saving it on a wallet on your computer...

the best way is offline wallet or hardware wallet

I agree its really dependent to the person administering the website and the control of the security of the exchanges has to be their responsibility. The reputations of the website relied to them on all cases specially when there's problem occurs on some of the trading transactions. Most importantly the trader himself must be capable of doing more efforts of transacting his or her coins to safer sending and won't be able to share the private key to the social media to avoid any leaks of private information because its in danger of hacker attacks of lost of funds.

never keep your coins or token on the exchanges exchanges can be hacekd any time  but not  the wallets it is not easy to hack wallets.

The brutal reality is that it is much easier to hack a private wallet than take funds out of an exchange(not saying it is not possible). Even so, its not being hacked that I am concerned with exchanges, its their shady behaviour that is scary.

People are naive to think that they will never get hacked - what are the chances right? right? Reality check, everyone is a target. Don't take the security of your coins lightly.

The chance that your private computer is compromised with a keylogger is a chance too great to take when dealing with cryptocurrency. Do you think your malwarebytes or ESET will protect you from all the dangers of the internet? Not a chance - even if it were miraculously to protect your PC, malicious software can be planted on your router, your printer.

The only, and I absolutely mean this, the ONLY way that anyone should store their coins is on a hardware wallet. If your coin doesn't do hardware wallets (eg. NEM), then seriously think about multisig wallets with the machines on different networks.

I hope that everyone reading this thinks twice about it, and doesn't have to learn the hard way.

Exchanges are like bathrooms.  Get in, do your business, and then get out.  They are as secure as you make them.  If you don't own the private key, you don't own your coins...

Exchange platforms are for exchanges. That is what it means. In other words, you will only put coins and tokens in there if you are making some trading, or exchanges of coins from one to another. It is not a storage really or a wallet in a strict sense if you are not going to use these coins and tokens for trading. You have to pull out these coins of yours and transfer them in a wallet whose private keys and passwords are with you. In the exchanges, the coins are not in your hands actually.

Best to avoid leaving anything on exchanges long term. If you want to buy and hold, it's best to keep it in a wallet. Obviously if you trade frequently, it going to be most efficient to leave in on an exchange ready to buy/sell when the market is right.

It mainly depends on xchange how safe really is, but you can easy check it out. For sure the exchanges are not the banks, so your money are much more not protected. You should check if it is truth but i heard that few exchanges just stolen their user's money. So as I say people with huge amount of money should veryfied exchanges, don't dolh there a lot of money etc.

We sometimes need money and we can't simply wait forever. That's why we need exchanges. It's not only for professional traders. Once we get on the platforms, we try to make the best decission, to sell or to buy, or maybe, to hold it for longer term.

Myethwallet is the safe wallet because private key with us. In centralized exchnages like polo and bitrex have private key with database. If a hacker hack then thiernwill be a problem..

You keep your coins in exchnages thats no issue but dont keep long time . Send to a safe wallet. Coinbase

Depends on what you mean by Safe.  Centralized exchanges don't offer Private keys to their  users.
The features you described are unique only to decentralized exchanges such as BitShares and Etherdelta.

of course they have some private key for each coins and i think they are stored in another database that will not the same with the normal database. they will make sure that the private key is safe from the attacker and they will protection to that key. i don't think that the exchanges will let the attacker can stolen the private keys because they want to make sure their business can run for a long time. and if we don't have to store any coins with them, we can move our coins into other wallet so it will be more secure and only we that know the coins.

Hacking wallet is not entirely impossible, you simply trying to fish some credentials data from the user you target, and you will have the access to their wallet just if it's not desktop wallet or offline wallet.
But I must agree, exchanges often get hacked by hacker, they find it easier to hack an exchange than wallets.

I think its not safe anyway to keep your coins in exchange for a long period of time. You can keep it there but not for long instead for awhile only mate so that you won't regret if ever there's an instances you didn't expect to be happen.

As far as I know of, exchange transfer coins between cold and hot storage. But you shouldn’t rely on an exchange to store your coins, it should be for trading purpose only. You do not control the private keys of the wallet and you never know when the exchange will be hacked.

Usually, the exchanges will use two-factor authentication and this is very safe. The private key is also quite secure because it's a randomly generated sequence and only you know.

Always keep your coins in your own wallet. Ideally, you should also keep your private key in offline storage. e.g. multiple USBs

Whether they store the private key in their database or not, is not really much of a concern since obviously they do.
But the fact that you can never have access to it unless they want to change to a decentralized exchange completely is what is important to note here.

Without any doubts, security wise, some exchanges are better than the others, but if you are thinking about having full control of your wallet or funds, then it is something you cannot get. This is simply more like having an online wallet.

Do not keep coins on any exchange wallet as we all hear regularly about hackers’ attacks. Use better the desktop version. Additionally make all operations in only the most reliable exchanges like Bittrex.

Exchanges are not the safe place to keep your tokens and coins at. Exchanges can be hacked. Always place your cryptocurrencies in wallets. Wallets can not be easily hacked but be very careful with the private keys of wallet. Make multiple copies of it and keep them in different secure places.

If you want to trade on an exchange, use only the coins you can afford to lose on the exchange in the event of any hacking or scamming. This is because, most exchanges are centralized and you do not have access to your private keys, which makes you not to have full control over your funds. If anything happens to the exchange, then your funds are gone, as simple as that. Probably exchanging with your friends/colleagues/neighbors could be a quick solution here for avoiding exchanges.

That's why we don't need to put much money on exchange site to avoid this. Only put bitcoins or altcoins that are for selling purposes only. If you have bought coins or you invest in bitcoin or altcoins. You must transfer it quickly to your own wallet where you hold your own private keys and yes make sure you take care of your keys.

I think the private key for each coin is safe because it is held by the owner or staff of the exchange itself. What's not safe is our account, especially if we don't use 2fa. I have the experience of receiving email someone tried to open my account, don't know where he got the information but Fortunately i have 2fa on so he couldn't break in.

you can google MT.Gox  :o and then research on ledgerwallet but if u want to trade cryptocurrencies ,mostly you can't avoid touching exchanges no matter how unsafe they are
agree exchange sites like ether delta not be make it is a threat to all users right.. and besides what would they valid reason if in every transaction made we pay the fee right?
I think it is also a good business hahahaha to have a exchanger . I will be contented if i have one and it also helps the coins and other crypto to rise their prices
reputation is the bet for any threats or wrong doing they will do I think it is secure to data bases with much more secure and fast calculating machines that is to hack

How to hack? If you deposit token and sell quickly By ETH or BTC. Then there are no chance to hack. So its cool. and need more about secure and trusted exchange site.

It has been said on this forum over and over again that leaving your coin on the exchange and as a matter of fact anywhere indeed where you do not have a private key is not safe. Be it third party wallet or online wallet. Save your coin on wallet where you are in control of your private key.

the advisable thing is that you keep the coins that you do not use in an external wallet and that you only have in the exchange the currencies that you use for trading since in the exchenge you do not have control of the private keys and in some case of hacking could take many risks , it is better to go for sure

All centralized exchange keep private key of all user so actually not really safe to put money in that exchange, but to minimize the risk use minimum 2 different exchange only for trading, and for long term hodl put all coin in personal wallet that we own by self the private key. And other important thing use all security feature in all exchange like 2 step verification, use private email address and always login from bookmark link to avoid phising site.

I think every exchange is safe as long as we can obey the rule and we need to secure our account, for example, we need to activate 2fa for our account, send verification to deposit and withdraw the coin, increase our level, and else. with doing this, I think we don't have any problem from the attacker although this is not guaranteed to make sure our account is always safe, at least, we can minimize and prevent our account from the attacker.

Exchanges don't have private key like myetherwallet but it has google authenticator for double security of your account. While enabling it you should save the 2fa code in case you lost your phone, it can be recovered.

Though exchangers owner may say that they are fully secured but it won't meant that we just let our wallet open all the time at their sites.  It seems to be that they are vulnerable for hackers attacks, knowing that they can't take all the responsibility of holding your coins safe all the time. That's why we should take care our own coins,  and we should never let others to have a chance of taking our belongings.

ALL Exchanges are targets for hackers, yes, but it is much easier to attack the users of the exchange, who most of the time cannot create secure passwords, and some do not use 2 Factor Authentication. If a user's email is compromised (very easy to socially engineer), it is easy for someone to do a password reset, and if they don't have 2FA activated on their account on the exchange, empty their wallet. Some users have their mobile phones connected to their email, and if someone gets hold of their phone, they can do a password reset, and also get the 2FA code on the phone to empty their account. Some exchanges allow apps to access user wallets on the exchange, so again, if the users phone is compromised, their account could be emptied.

Best Practice

-It is best practice to securely store your crypto in a wallet that you control the private keys for. A hardware wallet makes this very easy to do, and a user would have to have the wallet in their hands to move the coins.

-Apps & web based wallets are convenient, but with convenience comes less control and security, whenever a 3rd party can control your coins they are not 100% secure and can be stolen / frozen / confiscated. Period.

-If you are going to use an app on your phone to store your crypto, again, only use one that is primarily a wallet, and allows you to control your own private keys.

-There is a saying in bitcoin that goes "not your keys, not your bitcoin".

-If you are going to store bitcoin, or you need to spend bitcoin regularly

As far  as i know, trading site's for me has its own defense system against scam, and hacking system, because they also protect there  credebility toward the service to the costumer satisfaction,so thats why some exchange trading site need a two password security key to protect your invesment into there website,so for me my deposited  coin is safe in this place ,even im not using a nano ledger wallet, because its to expensive gadget for your investment coin.

Decentralized exchanges with a hardware wallet are the safest, but that isn't an option for everyone or for all coins. Always do your research before trusting an exchange with your money, and only ever have small amounts that you actively need to trade on them.  Otherwise keep it somewhere that you control the keys.

If you are a day trader then you may apply for email verification and 2FA Verification. If you are a holder trader then better is hold your coins in your wallet, Not exchanges site. Good luck.

Most of the time it's safe to put tokens on exchanges, because when you log in to your account, you have Google secondary validation, and people have a hard time cracking your account.
Most exchanges put most of their tokens in a cold wallet, so there's no need to worry about that.

You should not import private key to any site. It is so risky. Some exchange site wants private key such as Etherdelta, Forkdelta, IDEX etc.
You can use other wallets which are not store our private key. Such as Bittrex, binance, poloniex etc. All time make safe yourself.

They can not store coins in a closed mode. Each coin user must have access to their coins 24/7. If hackers gain access to the database they are accounts on their behalf make a withdrawal of coins bypassing the protection and authorization. We are always at risk. But that's life. Without this, it is impossible to trade.

Most of the exchange is safe but for long term it's not suitable to store our investment token, even exchange 99% is safe but still have 1% risk get hacked, better transfer to own private wallet (recommend hardware wallet)

They are relatively safe. Relatively mean that you can trade on exchanges and make money from your trading and as long as you do not leave your coins in the exchanges when you are done then you are safe. Using exchanges as a means of storage for your coins is not advisable and you are more likely to lose your coins on exchanges than in wallets which you own the private keys to.

No matter what, no exchange should be considered safe as long as they are centralized and the most important thing is to never leave your assets in them unless you have intention of trading them if you do not want to end up being screwed like the days of MtGox and the likes. The thing is that they may promise to be using a high level of security, but does this really guarantee anything much except to be at the mercy of the exchanges not having a loop hole and make them vulnerable to being hacked ? I doubt 8).

They are safe to trade with if that is what you are asking. What ever move you make regarding your trading on any exchange is your responsibility and they will give you your coins when you need it. It is important to know that exchanges are not wallets and should not be substituted and used as a wallet for the storage of your coins, saving your coins there can be risky.

It depends on which exchange, if the exchange is decentralized (for example, as an IDEX), then you bind your wallet with your key to it. If the exchange is not decentralized, then you use their wallets and the keys are kept by them and you risk them naturally, so if you plan not to trade coins for a long time, it is better to take them out of the stock exchange to your purses.

Exchanges are centralized and in that case, anything happening to the exchange negatively is definitely going to be affecting the users’ fund. The reason it has been clamored not to leave long term assets on exchanges is basically because of this and I believe by now, this is one principle everyone should have imbibed.

Agree with your point. Keeping the coins on exchanges isn't good. But still... if choosing just safe and reliable cryptocurrency websites, it usually would be the larger ones. To those you mentioned I would also add cex.io (https://cex.io/), they are pretty good in terms of security imo.

I think it is safe or not is not about where the private key is stored. Exchange is best practice to securely store your cryptos in a wallet that you control the private keys for. A hardware wallet makes this very easy to do, and a user would have to have the wallet in their hands to move the coins. If you are going to use an app on your phone to store your crypto, again, only use one that is primarily a wallet, and allows you to control your own private keys. Thus, you both control your private keys, so my opinion is secured or not depends on your control.

It is safe for whales who don't care much if they lose their coins. Rule is to leave only the coins you are trading with on the exchange, anything long term should be put into a proper wallet off the exchanges.

They can shut down any time and all your coins will be lost!
It is not really that safe to exchange your coins. Your coins might get lost. Before you exchange you need to be surr if you really want it and can take a risk.

No one centralized exchange can be resistant to hacker attacks. In the short history of the cryptocurrency existence, such incidents have occurred repeatedly, and in many cases, exchanges from their own pocket have compensated customers stolen money. Decentralized exchange cannot be hacked, mostly, of course. A much greater danger is the user's loss access to their funds. Can say that popular centralized exchanges are as safe as banks today.

Anyway, there are also specific cases of dangerous situations in decentralized entities, as happened a few weeks ago with myetherwallet, in which the DNS of google was hacked, but in any way, always the decentralized exchanges are perhaps not the most pupular but if the more secure. In such exchanges you should only have the tokens for the short-term trading.

first and foremost, I will advise you trade on good exchanges.  Tokens can be left on a good exchange when they are used for day to day trading activities. If you intend doing the long-term investment package, a proper and secure hardware wallet is recommended. The reason(s) is not far-fetched, An exchange can be hacked at any given time and your investment may be compromised leading to loss of capital. The least they could do is try to compensate their customers/investors. compensation can never be compared to your total worth of investment

So is this private key stored in a normal database?
And is this safe?
Exchange is not safe for keeping your  coins, it is only design to trade your coins and keep of the exchange if you have no plan to trade it because exchange website are always the target of hackers.Exchange owner are the one who keep the private key of the address in the exchange.

I am sure that the exchange will use everything to protect their site and their member because they want to give something to their member. and if there is any problem related to their site, they will do whatever it takes to give protection from the attackers. besides that, they will announce if they are finished to solve the problem or give any information related to their sites.
You don't seem to realize that almost all the exchanges that got hacked, involved an insider. At the end of the day, a site might mean so well, but you never can tell of that one rotten egg. So never turn an exchange to a bank and leave only enough amount for your trading, which of course, should be an amount no more than what we can afford to loss.

Crypto-currency exchanges are always reliable. This is the largest Binance exchange. Trading transactions can be done easily and quickly.
where it actually depends on each of us if we look at the crypto wallet everything is also safe they will use the code that is only the users who know and if there are some hacking possible errors are on the user he may give some address or key that is not intentional.

Exchanges too have private key for the wallets but they don't reveal that to us because they are holding our funs in the name of us we gave them such power, but not safe as we are keeping them in a wallet so if we want to store our crypto currencies safely for longer term then keep them in a wallet that provides private key.

It is safe for whales who don't care much if they lose their coins. Rule is to leave only the coins you are trading with on the exchange, anything long term should be put into a proper wallet off the exchanges.

They can shut down any time and all your coins will be lost!

I completely agree!

If you use the exchange to trade then how it is safe to holding the fund mate. I may agree that you can find the way to do the trade alone but will not be able to hold in any exchange for it mate. If you want to use the good exchange means please use the Binance, Bitrex, Bitfinix and Etherdelta.

For hackers you can see this is the easy way to reach your fund when are looking to hodl.
Please have some private key secured wallet for having your fund be safe.

I think that private keys exchanges are stored in offline wallets. For transactions, temporary wallets are used, which are controlled by robots. Undoubtedly, the owners of tokens are trying to keep the keys safe, hacking of exchanges is unprofitable for their creators.

It would be nice to have decentralized exchanges, and if it were not possible to have the possibility to have the private key at the time of creating the wallet .
It is not like we do not have decentralized exchanges such as IDEX, FORKDELTA (which is a fork of ETHERDELTA), but the thing here is that asides trading volume, I totally feel we are not just there yet and the available ones are not really giving out that much in terms of security and feel, as they are more like not that much usable in the real sense without even still being scared of not losing your funds. Looking at how EtherDelta has experienced huge attack in the past, it is still not much to rely on.

For me im 80% sure that exhange are very safe because it is the only thing that you're sure that your money is secure. Also when you exchange your coin its automatically operate in higher level of security. Although there some of them are suspicious so i suggest to you to trust only to those exchanger that on the top.
80% is a whole lot bro and sure, you may still be able to count on some exchanges safety if you can at least beef up the security of your own account, but even at that 80%, the 20% is still a lot if you have some pretty big asset in it.

What is the point, leaving funds in exchanges anyway if one is not trading? It is best to believe that exchanges are not safe at all, no matter the percentage you want to give them, and if all your assets are on an exchange, then, believe me, you have nothing at all.

I am sure that the exchanges will secure their site from the attacker and they will give protection to their customer. but this is not always guaranteed for every exchange because I see that there are still any exchanges that getting hack by the attacker. so we need to secure our account with the instruction from every exchange. so far, I don't have any problem with many exchanges and I think every exchange will give the best services to their customer.

However, you must adhere to the rule that it is better not to use the exchange as a means for long-term storage.

Decentralized exchanges (DEX) are very safe. It is very difficult to attack DEX, because you have no specific point for the attack ;).
Centralized exchanges are not safe, as you can see many recently hacks caused that many people lost a lot of money. That is why Vitalik Buterin said that DEX is the future and CEX will die in the hell.

there are advantages and disadvantages of saving in the exchange and saving in the wallet. the advantage is we can send the coin in everytime we want to sell. the disadvantage is when the price suddenly increases at the high price, we cannot sell the coin because it's in the other wallet and we need to wait for the transaction is complete and it needs time before we can sell. but I think the exchange is safe especially if we can activate the security for our account so we can prevent the hacker to steal our coins.

You can transfer your tokens to the exchange right when you want to sell it, otherwise better to keep it in your private wallet

The Exchange uses one address only when it will be sent to another wallet out of the Exchange. his example Ethereum:

merchant 1 removes Ethreum into Binance wallet
merchant 2 removes Ethreum into Bittrex wallet
merchant 3 removes Ethreum into Poloniex wallet

so all Ethereum is sent in 1 wallet, and it is certain that the exchange has its private key.

Put crypto on the centralized exchange is not really safe because the private key of our wallet is own by third party and this mean we dont have any control with our money. There are already many centralized was get hack so really not safe to put coin on the exchange. Will be more safe to put coin/token in decentralized exchanges like Waves platform and Idex because they give the private key. And we you have to trade on the centralized exchange, for the better use more than 1 different exchange to be more safe.

One thing we should bear in mind is that exchange wallets are not for permanent safe keeping of coins. From past experiences, it is believed that exchanges are always under attacks because it hoards a lot of tokens. The best thing to do is to transfer your tokens from the exchange site back to your main wallet after trading with the exchange.

No exchange is 100% secure.
I could read that often enough and there were already some hacks in the last months.
Therefore you should not leave coins and tokens there longer than necessary.
But everyone should know that in the meantime.

While when you store your coins in an wallet you control, it's upto you how securely you operate.
When you have coins in exchange, the security of exchange too comes in play.
Though we don't have a large problem with popular exchange since Mt. gox and exchanges have increased their security and it's sometimes more secure to put the coins in exchange(2fa, otp, email verification) than having it on your daily use PC. Still large hodling sums should not be kept on exchange.

Only decentralized exchanges need your private key like IDEX, ForkDelta or EtherDelta. Do not provide your private key to the centralized exchanges or you will loose your funds!

It is safer to keep your coins/tokens in wallet you hold the private keys and if you need to trade, trade only with exchanges that are reputed to have a strong security. Binance does it for me.

Exchanges either centralized or decentralized are meant for one purpose alone and that is to exchange cryptocurrencies for other cryptos of fiat. People should stop leaving their tokens on exchanges because that is what leads to stolen funds when a case like the coincheck hack of earlier this year happens
Majority of people who's tokens are on exchanges are not traders so why leave your coins on exchanges, they should be in a wallet where you own the private keys.

The exchange market from its blockchain build-up, is always decentralized in the sense that it is devoid of a third party influence in the process of online transaction. By so doing, it ensures transparency, accountability and accuracy in the transaction processes between the buyer and seller. Although the exchange can be altered by cyber hackers whenever the exchange platform is not well built with sophisticated online security apps like the smart contracts or Dis centralized apps (DApps) that will detect any form of fraudulent activities in the platform.

They're not 100% safe, but I don't think there's going to be much trouble on exchanges like binance. They keep security pretty high because they make good profits. Otherwise, their reputation will be greatly damaged. But as a general rule, keeping money on exchanges for long-term is not the right approach.
Remember when there was a syscoin hacked case through use API and binance has been taking an important act to reduce the noise from those are getting impact caused by that. Remember a lot of major exchange such as bittrex and polo have lost their credibility. polo has been investigating by DoJ
i think there are no safe exchanger because even Poloniex sometime get DDOS or other attack. that is why we must keep maintain our asset by ourself. don't put all money in 1 exchanger and only what you want to trade in there

Exchanges are not safe in terms of keeping your cryptocurrency at a very safe condition because the exchanges has a lot of money and it can triggered the interest of the professional hackers in the internet to penetrate or try to steal the money in the exchange. Exchange are the best for trading or making money but for preserving your funds, it is not safe.

You should never keep more coins than you are prepared to lose on an exchange. Not only are you vulnerable to having your coins stolen by hackers but you are also at risk of dishonest operators stealing your coins. You may even have your holding taxed by incompetent operators like OKex which recently took the profits from all the people who invested coins in derivative contracts to pay for the losses suffered from their inability to manage margin requirements. The only safe alternative is using a DEX where you still control the private keys.

It all depends from which angle you are talking from. if you are reffering to storing your cryptocurrencies on exchange, i dont think that is a wise decision to take but if you are talking from the angle of trading, then there is no way you can do without an exchange platform because that is where you will meet traders who are willing to do business with you. All i can say is that you do diligent research so as to choose reliable and dependable exchange platform.

Exchange that has a good reputation will indeed reduce our anxiety and will increase our confidence to trade in the exchange. But still that the exchange has a high risk, to save assets in a very large amount, we better keep it offline wallet and move it to exchange when we need it. This is a choice because we have to reduce the risks that exist, the smarter we are in placing ourselves in a situation it will avoid us from the bad things that might happen.

Exchanges are safe enough for you to carry out your trading activities but not safe enough for you to use them as a wallet to store your coins. You are more at risk of losing your coins if you leave them in an exchange than if you have them in your own personal wallet. The fact is that if you do not control the private keys to the wallet then you do not control your coins.

Storing the crypto currencies into the exchanges has many pros and many cons, if you are a daily/weekly/monthly trader then exchange should be fine but should take care always.

Generally, the private keys are kept by the exchanges stuffs or managers, there are risks that the exchanges will take away your coins, but I think some big exchange will not do that since they can make great profit to keep the exchange safe, instead of taking the coins away for a short time profit.
I agree with you. for example, take a stock exchange binance that very much values its reputation in particular security. and recently it was hacked twice, but it was not possible for the scammers to steal (as far as I know) and they will compensate them in case they steal. by itself on stock exchanges garbage and catch nothing

Rule is to leave only the coins you are trading with on the exchange, anything long term should be put into a proper wallet off the exchanges.

They can shut down any time and all your coins will be lost!

I agree with your statement Sir, there are couple of exchange sites who scammed their users withdraw all the tokens and shutdown the site and take away all the money.

The question is this: How to determine a legitimate and longterm exchange site?

Second: Do exchanges need to register for legalities to consider as legitimate and we can sure they will not scam people?

Their private key is stored in a normal database I suppose. But yes, you should use exchanges only for trading. They are not supposed to keep you coins. So be careful and keep your coins in wallet.

never hold a coin in exchange or you will lose it, currently exchange is very easy to hack, be careful, to hold the coin must be in the wallet

It depends on exchange. Some of them are safier and anothers aren't. At the same time Mt.Gox was the biggest exchange and it was hacked.
Also I heard that big exchanges attract more hackers.

Hi,

Every exchange adding a new btc, eth, token address on the exchange website.
I think they need some private key to set the transaction on this websites.

So is this private key stored in a normal database?
And is this safe?

There are definitely a lot of safety precautions these exchanges take in order to secure everyone's bitcoins, eths, and tokens. They would be immediately shutdown if they didn't, anyway. But I personally would pick the ones who are already known in the internet and not some shady exchange that no one stores on.

Adding those wallet addresses is to enable users trade with the coin. The only key required is your 2FA.

If i have to rate it to the scale of 1 to 10, i will give it 7. I often read/seen news from television and the internet about cyber crimes involving cryptomarkets as the victim. Millions of worth of cryptocurrencies have been looted by cyber criminals despite the company's self proclaimed maximum security on their exchange. That's what make it scary to deposit your crypto assets in the cryptomarket.

And for an extra precautions better to trade little by little first, observed how this exchange behaves and know all the information, there's a lots of exchange and they all have their own house rules, exchange mostly the target of hackers so you also need to focus with how this exchange work out
to prevent being victimized and if the exchange have extra security measures, experience always allow us to learned deeper and to analyze exchange
that can be trustful in the long run,.

Well, as safe as it can be. If you ask me, I think that exchanges are just as safe as wallets. Both of them have equal amount of risks attached to them, and an almost equal amount of security too. I believe that if you do not really worry about having your coins in your wallets, then you shouldn't also trouble yourself if your coins are on exchanges too. they are quite safe. Well, I am speaking for the ones that I use.

Yes, I think it is safe but its much better if you move your coins off the exchanges if you are planning to hodl for long term. When something bad happens to the exchanges, your coins will not be affected. They also have the power to remove your coins if they want to so its better to be play safe than be sorry later. Just make sure that your wallet is secured. BTW, I have tried to hold a coin on the exchanges for 3 months and haven't gotten any problems with it.

I don't recommend exchange sites for keeping of coins for long term. Exchanges are always under attack or maintenance and one can lose their money when the exchange is attacked by hackers. However, traders can keep their coins on exchanges temporarily.

Actually it is very safe if you store your coins in exchange wallet because usually they using cold storage to store all of coins and tokens.
But it is not impossible to be hacked, there were some exchanges have been hacked. So it will be the best for us to using our own wallet if we want to hold for long time.

that is good advice. I also don't really like storing assets in exchange because they are very stolen. I only keep a few in exchange for the need to trade every day, the rest is indeed I will immediately draw it on my personal wallet. even though I cannot guarantee its security but at least I hold my own assets.

I don’t think any exchange is safe to store alt coins on long term. When dealing with digital assets there is always a risk of error in code that allows hackers to take advantage. So keep your token on a ledge if u want to keep them.

None exchanges are safe.
People have their exchange accounts stolen all the time. As you can be hacked from anything on Internet. When a hacker gets the access to your browser data, you are done. You accounts will be stolen along with your exchanges accounts.
Dont store coins on exchange. Withdraw them asap when you have them.

only the trust of users is the strongest factor for them, I use the exchange market for quick profits and in the end I will send it back to Mew or blockchain. there is no market that really has a full refund guarantee, they also panic when they lose their own assets, this is very disappointing because I see the thefts that occur are similar to their own conspiracies.

The adage in crypto market is hat if you don't have the private keys then you don't have control over the wallet. Most new exchanges are working on improving in security and keeping keys safe but the truth is that it is not safe to keep your assets on exchanges except you want to trade.

Why would any exchange store their Private key in a normal database?

They will keep them safe in order to avoid any security issues. I do not think that they would like to compromise the security as they make a lot money from you.

But, it is always advised to only keep those coin on the exchage that you want to trade. The one you want to HODL should be transfered into a suitable wallet.

I agree with you because it is safer to store all assets in personal wallet rather than save in the wallet exchanger. as you said storing all assets in wallet exchanger is have a big risk and that's right.

Private keys are very important, especially for large and frequent exchanges!
Keeping the Private key safe is very important, I think they will use multiple layers of security for large transactions!

I have tried to store coins on exchanges multiple times and I haven't gotten any problems with it. What I am not sure of is that if its safe to hodl for long term. I only held my coins for 4 months and sold it the moment it pumps up. I also store them on exchanges because of the wallets being hacked a year ago. But I think that was fixed now so no need to store your coins on exchanges.

Exchanges are always susceptible to get hacked due to security holes in their system, I think exchanges have both wallets hot & cold. They store user assets in cold wallet & transfers it to hot wallet only when the user tries to trade like when users place an order, but all exchanges may not support this facility. To be on safe side always keep your assets in your personal wallet for which you are holding the private keys or seed phrases, just transfer them to exchanges when you are willing to trade.

I will not keep large amounts of coins on exchange, even if  are the top exchange , always some hacker can find a way and maybe they will hack some users, i remember in past that binance, get some users coins selled for another coin , was affected users who hold bitcoin and have api activated, but binance fixed them and cancel all users transaction who has affected, and all get their coins back.

Some exhanges are more safer than others. And don't forget to activate 2fa if is possible.
So the best you can is to not hold so much coins on exchanges.

No exchange is 100% safe, there is always a possibility of hacking or fraud with any given exchange, but if we compared to risks, there are also advantages on exchanges like they give many other possibilities for earning or increase our assets on exchanges by simply trading, stop loss alert facilities and others etc. There is no doubt that wallets are more safe than exchanges, but they are very restricted and cannot give us chance to increase our crypto assets. If want to be less risky with exchange, try to not adhere to one or two particular exchange and try to make 5 or 6 or more depending upon self capability to maintain such number of exchanges.

I'm using exchangers almost every day, and I never had problems with it. First of all, you should choose a good exchanger like Binance or Bittrex. Next rule is not to keep all your crypto in one exchanger, it's safer to keep money on different platforms.

Safe or not dependent on the exchange developer, if the developer intends to be evil then all your accounts will not be safe. the account that we have should always be given additional security such as 2FA so that only we can access

Safety is not the top when it comes to exchanges a lot of them are very prone to hack which is why people are always advised to make sure that they never leave their coins on any exchanges. So you should make sure that you are only putting coins on the exchanges to trade but nothing else.

I believe that DEX are more safe now, especially when they use escrow system. Alot depends on DEV team but if project has a strong prof skilled staff-no worries. Don't forget about the volumes of the exchange. For example, I use LCS exchange but still store coins on wallet. Some people say you need to send to exchange but for me it will be always be too serious to store on exchange. But it doesn't matter I won't get my dividends, here you can send them either to wallet or exchange.

I think to be careful in choosing exchange for trading coin. usually private key must be private no one who knows, because if private key leak, our coins can potentially lost. if you want to exchange a save, can use etherdelta, there is a good market, the coins price is clear and safe in the transaction.

Your coins are safe unless exchanges are hacked. So never store your coins in exchanges wallets. Always choose the wallets that you know of the private key.
