Hi, could somebody tell me more about Airdrop? I see more and more announcements each day...

Simply put, an airdrop is a way for a new coin to fairly distribute it's coin/token to the community.  Most of the time the development team for a coin will create a form for you to go to, and you fill out different types of info, normally BitcoinTalk forum ID or profile link, and possibly Twitter/Telegram/Facebook info.  Then, you include your ETH wallet address, and if you're lucky, they will "airdrop" (basically send you) their coin to your wallet. 

So, it's basically a way to get coins for free.   ;D

At what stage are coins usually airdropped? Is it as an alternative to an ICO where say half coins are airdropped and the other half kept by coin creators, as an additional offering of the coin after an ICO or is it just another alternative to bounties for building interest in the community?

Airdrop is something I love. Why? Because I can get free coins from it. I will just give them my address. Some of them have a very little task for you like sharing or retweet thier post and that's it.

Well, it's pretty simple. Imagine that there is a new token coming out and they want to share it. So they share their token among everyone for a small cost.
All you may need is to share this token in Facebook / Twitter / Telegram and wherever they want. Both sides are interested.
