I have a fairly powerful computer but no specialised equipment as yet.

But CGMiner is definitely a good, if not the best, choice for mining program. Probably need to decide which mining hardware you want to use and what coin you, primarily, want to mine first though. I'm mining Litecoin right now. I'm using the 12.8 AMD Driver on Windows via cgminer. Once I get my ASIC BTC tech, I'll be using cgminer. In most cases, I highly suggest cgminer.
