Title: Hubs for Block Erupter USB AsicMiner
Post by: JayCoin on July 15, 2013, 10:00:36 PM
I have a sample coming for a USB hub that will be great for the Block Erupter USB ASICMiners

If it checks out, I will be buying a bunch of them. (3-4 weeks out)

Specs:

10 ports
USB 3.0/2.1/2.0
Led Indication    Red(Power)   Green(working)
Material of construction is aluminum alloy
VIA VL812 Chipset

Includes 5 amp power supply. Anker hubs are only 4 amps

Will be less expensive than Anker hubs.

Looking if there is any interest for this.

Reply if you would like to reserve one. I will contact you when they come in (Not binding)

Need to know what operating systems it will work with as well as the Raspberry.

How much cheaper?

I'd start with 1-pc.

I am still working out the details but It would be about $40-$45 direct from me or $50 on ebay.

Specs say it is compatible with linux.

The more demand I can estimate, the better price I should be able to negotiate.

The two things you really want to know:

Is it limited to 5A out or does it add an extra .5A it takes from the downstream? If not, 10 erupters will be dicey.

Is it monolithic or chained? If it's chained, many of the ports won't work on an rPi.

If it is USB 3.0, the 5A will likely be @ 12 V, so it will have plenty of watts for the 10 erupters.  10 port Anker hubs use 4A@12V and run 10 erupters fine.

I plan on a full  test and I will send it to Canary to also test to make sure it will work properly.

The power supply is 12V at 5 amps = 60 watts. @ 2.5 watts per USB miner = Power enough for 24 USB miners.

Is there any way to make it a 12 port and space them twice as far apart?
So it aids in cooling and you could put a fan on each end.

Please put me down for one.  I know everyone wants it to work for the RPi, but I'm curious if this will work with the MineNinja (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=231333.0) (BeagleBone Black based mining controller).

Do you have any pictures to give us a idea of what it looks like?  Is it very similar to Anker hub?

That one on Amazon looks like it is only 9 functional ports and one charging port.

I think if you open it up you will find a 12VDC-5VDC step down inside that will give you 5V x 5A = 25VA which is enough for 10 USB miners   ;)

cheers,

Not that it matters since it only has 10 ports, but the original figure of 24 miners is closer to correct.  Watts are volt-amps.  When you step down the voltage, the amps increase and watts stay constant.  There will be some loss in the conversion, so it might be able to only handle 23 miners (not counting the 0.9A@12 V on the USB cable).  But like I said, it doesn't matter since there are only 10 ports.

Now if you could make a 20 port hub with the same power system, that would be awesome.  You will have much less competition than you will have with this 10 port hub.

Interesting.  I received one of these from Amazon two weeks ago.  Same box but advertised 10 ports.  I had 9 miners and a fan in it.  It worked fine.  Now wondering if it's only a 9 port.  I don't have the miners now so I'll have to wait to test it.  But it looks exactly the same as this box and was advertised as 10 port.
Oh... it worked fine with the 9 I had in there.

The fan would work in the charging port.  Assuming you put the fan on an end, you had a 50/50 shot of setting it up that way.  I could very well be wrong, but the 13 port hub I have with a charging port does not connect the charging port to the host.

That's probably enough about the OP's competitor though :P.

Looks very like this one on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet%C2%AE-Power-Adapter-Cable-Chipset/dp/B00DCO9YVM/

Though that does also have a charging port at the end...guessing all from the same Chinese OEM.

I know there is competition already out there.  It seems also that you can get the same model that I am importing.

I am going to see what kind of deal I can get and pass the savings along.  If I can't get a good deal than it won't be worth it.

I received and tested my USB 3.0 10 port Hub from China and tested for a week.
  • Works good on win7 and linux.
  • Spacing is a little tighter than previous hubs, but I had no trouble running all 10 ports.
  • There is one charging port that also is a live USB port.
  • Material of construction is plastic and unit is lightweight.
  • It still comes with a 5amp power supply and USB cable.
  • It is the same manufacturer as Anker / Juiced hubs that are currently available.
  • Don't know if rasp Pi supported.  From what I hear, Ankers don't work with them so I am guessing these wouldn't work with them either.
  • The smaller foot print will be work better for mining farms based on these units.

I am still working on pricing from the manufacturer.  For the first shipment I will probably be able to offer them for 0.5 btc ($50) shipping included.

Have 2x of the ankers (from what you've said, same manufacturer, same chipset(?), same power supply) that don't work on the Pi, so I'm almost certain that these won't work with an rPi.

I'm running out of hope of finding a decent 10port powered USB hub campat. with the rPi.. Settling on loads of dub-h7's.

I will however say, that compared to the Anker, your price is good.  I'd also give credit where it's do, and say that if the opportunity arises to work with Canary... it would likely be a smart move.  GL with the hubs!

As I said before in this thread, I have an identical hub (branded TekNet, the one I linked on Amazon UK.)

I suggest you pop one open and have a look at the quality of the soldering on the components inside.  I suggest you're sitting down.  As soon as I saw the inside of mine I threw it in the bin.  I'd opened mine to drill a few holes in it for cooling (the hub was getting really warm, and not from the 10 BE's plugged in to it).

If I were thinking of importing these hubs, I would definitely think again having seen what I have.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not posting this to piss on your parade, it's more a warning.  There's NO way a hub built the way these are, are going to be reliable in any shape or form.

USB 2.0 with the same specs would be better. It would be a bit cheaper and would work with the Raspberry PI. Right now the only hubs the worked with the PI, that dont cost a ass ton of money only support 6 or 7 BE's.

I am going to provide hubs that will run 10 miners and cost ~ $3 per port.

They will run on rasberry Pi / linux / win7 .

They will not be anything special looking, in fact they will look like those cheap 10 port 2.0 hubs that you are lucky if they run 1 block erupter.

All of these hubs will have a burn in time to make sure they will work upon delivery.

I am waiting on delivery and soon will have these on sale at my website and on ebay.  You will be able to pay by Bitcoin or Paypal.  Should have a limited supply on sale this week.

I am sending a unit to CanaryInTheMine to review.  I will make a post once they are for sale.

Thanks for the interest and suggestions.

P.S. The 3.0 hub that I was originally going to sell and posted a picture of is not going to be the one I will be selling.
