Sharing this cool experiment on crypto, consist of holding 100 cryptos for 5 years, investing $10 on the top 100 on coinmarketcap. So far with $404 USD in profit on the initial $1000 invested seems like the experiment is doing well.

What do you think about it? Could it be an actual good strategy to spread the investment on many coins? has any of you done something similar?

Pretty cool idea. But I am not sure if I would want to hold for 5 years. But then we never know, and you might get lucky and invest in the next facebook or google. I am sure you will end up making good money.

I would sell for a decent profit but then it won’t respect the experiment rules

awesome, i mean how someone so patience and just hold the coin for 5 years !! if that that were me i absolutly allready sell it and take the profit, keep it like that mate ill following your blog and see can i get profit too

I am not much convinced from your experiment. First reason is that the sole amount is not much to give effective result. If seen singular then only $10 has been invested which isn't enough to take advantage of promising coins due to excessive diversification in shitty coins too.
Then secondly, during last one month Crypto Market was extremely bullish. This may not be in coming months and you may end up bearing losses. Also if you chose some 5-6 promising coins in last month, your profits may have been 100-150% than 40%

Interesting and very simple. I think this strategy has minimal risk and will give a good result.  I would take the top 10 coins. Now I doubt it. May invest in 100 also?

I think 70% of the tokens you picked will under perform long term, but those that will win will do very well, I believe the samples size is too many, I would have prefer something like 20 to 30 selected coins

Interesting idea. Your portfolio is diversified. $404 however is a lot in 1 week. I'm interested in how much you lost in fees and how many wallets you have? I have never done it but I have looked into doing it for the top 20...

It's definitely interesting, but I would say that it is a terrible strategy.
It's basically diversification on crack and too much of something is never good.

Also, it seems to be more like betting rather than strategic investing.
Since the only thing that is considered is coinmarketcap, there was no thought or research put into what you are actually buying.
That would be like going into a super market in a foreign country, and buying one item of every single thing in the produce section even if you don't know what the food is.
I'm guessing that that strategy would give you quite a bit of foods you purchased that you end up not liking.

Another thing to consider is that 2018 will be very different than 2017.
BTC has entered hyper inflation mode and it's spilling into eth and ltc.
One thing to consider though, is that there are a lot of even top 30 coins that are just not rising in price well.
Most of the surge in price is a direct result of the btc inflation rather than actual real money flowing into these coins.
Take a look at Monero vs. say omg, or qtum, or so many others.

I think in 2018 you will see more cases of this where coins with real uses and solid tech will do extremely well and all of the others will stagnate.

predict is good or bad because it's no assurance,no one know if the crypto is still here after 5 years or we have this after 5 years that all i can say and that is negative.But now i think we experience already the future of crypto that we have digital money with high price so is the positive here.Invest now but not all of your money and that is safety move to do with this volatile price of digital money or bitcoin.

Although of course 100 coins are very much, it is better to choose not more than 25 coins. My opinion.
On the other hand, it will be more interesting.
If the cryptomarket does not crash, then in 5 years you will become a rich man.

I really admire your perseverance waiting. Five years is not a short time, but with that small amount of money you have made a small profit. Most people are impatient and sell cryptos when it raises prices. With Bitcoin, too, if everyone waited patiently, maybe now you have become rich with it

It make sense because investing into multiple currencies actually gives us more odds of winning the game. I actually read this somewhere on this forum only. I mean it is really easy to work out when we talk about the math behind this. With multiple currency investment we get to hit the stone in a crowd and this means that hitting the target is far easier. I understand what you want to show us here, by multi coin investment we can see mass effect on the profits. For example, 100 coins moving by few cents is nothing but our investment moving by few dollars if considered altogether. Yeah thats pretty awesome. However putting stakes on 100 coins isn't possible because some of them might dump crazy zero and we may need to over come that $10 investment first before we can proceed for profit window.

Interesting, don't stop updating the thread and don't get tempted to sell early either or we will never see the true result.

That much patience is too much. We can't wait forever by holding those tons of tokens. 5 years is too much, and it would make a pressure on me. Waiting for years is the job of rich people.

Will be good to see the difference between this investment vs the profit gained only with bitcoin in few months. I did kinda same investment but with only about 10 coins (random not the first10) and after few months I have to say that if I had invested only in BTC I would have gained a lot more  :-[ :-[ :-[

This seems to be a really good idea but I think it will only be effective when the market is in a Bullish stage. And for next 5 years we can't trust the market sentiments.  Moreover, 5 years is too long time, in between that Central authorities will try to regulate it in some way or another, so this regulation we can't really predict market movements.
But yes, diversifying investment is definitely an effective way to earn profits in long term.

I need a way of reminding myself to look at this thread in 5 years.  Just don't sell!  Hold until the end. It might be a bumpy ride.

With so many forks, swaps, wallet changes, updates etc going on, I don't know if it is a good idea to buy and just hold for 5 years without keeping yourself updated. It would be wise to check up every week or other week if there have been made any changes to your coins. The deal with crypto is once you go in, you need to keep checking it. So good fortune on your five years of road ahead of you.

That's a very smart project and I will follow that. Perhaps I should make something similar.r myself even though 100 coins may not be enough :)

This experiment seems very interesting to me, but my obvious question is what do you plan to do with the infinity of new cryptocurrencies that will appear over these five years? We must remember that many of the altcoins with great potential that exist today are new, so it is a fact that new surprises will emerge throughout the experiment.

Would you incorporate them by dropping others?

Hi, I love your project. Personally I am not persistant enough to hold for 5 years the same coins. Typically, diversifiying your portfolio renders more stability. Some people are just so crazy about bitcoin that do not consider all the oportunities out there.

I do diversify, but also pay attention to some coins that look promising. I put a little bit and many times it has given nice results.

Low risk, big profit. Probably about 30% of this currencies will be down in five years, but that which won't die will make you big profit. Good luck. I'll be following!

it's a natural thing and certainly many who do it by buying coins when the price is cheap and hold up until the price looks fun for him.
keeping an eye on your coin history before you buy it is the best step in making long-term investments.

This is straight profit now because we are in bull market. When thing turn down you will see how easy and fast they will be dumped. Bull markets are not a good time to buy coins to hold long term.

I would suggest to lessen it to top 20-30 cryptocurrency and check first the technology and the team that handle it. 100 crypto is a huge number in portfolio and many of them would not perform well.

Interesting idea but 100 crypto currencies looks too much and I think 90 of them will fade away in five years so it is better to invest on 10 crypto currencies than 100.But $404 in 1 week it a great achievement so you can cashout your invested money in some weeks and let's roll your profit amount for the five years who knows it may turn into $1M  on someday.Best of luck bro.

It is very interesting. I myself thought to do something similar, but out of 50 coins and increase the purchase amount, since there is a large commission if you buy many different coins with small amounts. And 5 years is a long period. You just need to remember to follow them, as some coins fly off the exchange and lose their meaning at all. Y need to get rid of them, because in 5 years, who knows what will happen.

It a good strategy but the big questions is can you hold for that long prior without being tempted to sell

Thats a bad investment,picking coins without any research will waste your money and your precious time,you can double your money in just a week if you are good in trading with technical and fundamental analysis.

Interesting journey, I have always want to start my journey with top 30 altcoins but find it a hassle to withdraw the coins into its respective wallets.

Considering the withdrawal fees and managing individual coins in its wallets, do you have a good way to do it?

I don’t think a hardware wallet is able to support all the coins and  not safe to keep the coins in exchanges for 1 to 5 years.

 Why to keep them 5 years? good idea is to share your investment to 100 coins,but when you see profit from one of them,sell it!!then pick another one!!!!
 Why to wait? if you want to wait without any buy-sell action, better to keep Bitcoin!!! no risk!!!!

I think that you have great willpower. I can not look calmly, if the price rises, I want to fix the price and put a render on sale. 5 years. It is too long. Your experiment is very interesting, but I do not have the patience to last 5 years.)

5 years is a LOT of time and a LOT of work, would like to see results of somebody who did that on early 2017 running that challenge for a year

This is not a unique experiment but simply a strategy which big companies or mutual funds adopt to gain more profit. It is called diversification of risk or portfolio management. But I am not sure about time period that is taken is authenticated or not. We need to evaluate our investment on quarterly or half yearly basis so that we can take out our funds from non-performing or poor performing coins and shift these funds to some useful coins where we can get far better returns than before.

Spreading and waiting are not bad ideas at all. There are many stories of people getting rich just by "hodling", but I think that the competition has got fiercer now and we have to be selective with our money.

Don't see total profit/loss on the main page, do you need help with this? It's possible to fetch all rates via API and make a simple widget for overall profit.
Let me know if you'll need help with this.
