Title: [ANN] Bytecoin|BTE| Official Re-Launch of this 1:1 Bitcoin Coin!
Post by: mistercoin on July 21, 2013, 08:33:08 PM
Bytecoin was brought to us back a few months ago as probably the first alt-coin to hit the market in a long time that was sha-256. Then came the hell or purgatory of scrypt clones made (mostly) by people who don't know a thing about them.
The original goal of BTE was to make a Bitcoin clone 1:1 copy so that it could be (in the future) worth a nice bit. It also wanted to give a chance for the people who missed out on the Bitcoin launch, who are now making hundreds of thousands from it.
BTE died off slowly as all these coins came crashing down into the purgatory.
Here is it's relaunch

I guess i will be the one to say it.

Almost no notice - Welcome to a forked chain.

How is this an official patch?

Not by the coin developer. As far as I know , the original developer has not handed official development over to anybody.

Have any services been notified and agreed to this "unoffical" patch? I have not (CryptoCoinExplorer.com). So what do I run? I have always been a stickler about CCE and official updates.

More importantly, has Cryptsy and any other exchange supporting Bytecoin been notified and agreed? What block does it start at? What does it change?

I have nothing against revitalizing a near death coin, however if this is a hard fork with no official development ties or notice, you just may end up killing the patient.

yes bitjohn has been given the new client there currently isnt a hard fork but its definitly a recommended update. Its been checkpointed until the block before the supposed fork yesterday. secondly i didnt know cce existed or that you ran a bytecoin explorer as i looked everywhere for one. Id recommend that you download the client and mistercoin shall add you as the reference for the block explorer

This coin admits it purely exists just so people can get in on its launch? Pump and dump scams don't even try to hide themselves any more, do they?

Every coin is a clone of something or another. None of the coins would exist without bitcoin, its gradual improvement of a coin which builds it, and that is our aim

EDIT: this isnt even our coin the original dev left months ago but we didnt want the coin to die so are trying to build and improve on it.

How is this a gradual improvement at all? It says in the title and thread "1:1 copy".

because some people still want it. Also because its something that could easily be revived and could gain a lot faster adoption then every scrypt pnd coin around here

The pushpool at bte.cryptocoinmine.com (http://bte.cryptocoinmine.com) should be up soon.

Just doing some final testing and getting some cosmetics done.

It will be LP only at first as there is some strangeness with the front end and the SHA-256 stratum back end.

Bytecoin CryptoCoin Mine (http://bte.cryptocoinmine.com)

This is a 1.5% Proportional pool

120 confirms until enough miners use the pool. I will then move funds into the pool and reduce the confirms.

LP port only until I can get the stratum (SHA-256) back end and the front end to play nice.

http://bte.cryptocoinmine.com:4339 (http://bte.cryptocoinmine.com:4339)

Cosmetic upgrades and an accurate network hash rate display coming soon.

Pool profits help fund www.cryptocoinexplorer.com

Probably because some people want to do a pump and dump. Avoid this if you don't like donating your time and money to scammers.

some people do it for R&D like me and the rest of the team, mistercoin and me dont hold any BTE or an asic. Personally im doing it for the fun of it and i decided rather than releasing another coin i could just work on one which is already released and people still use even if not popular

There was a little blimp there for a couple of minutes. I realized I had forgotten to change a bit of code in the pushpool software that makes it more compatible with the modern databases.

I fixed and compiled. I had to shut the back end down for a moment while I swapped out the updated executable.

So the hash rate numbers will be off for a little bit until the interruption falls out of its range of calculation.

FYI: THE STATISTICS DISPLAYS ARE JUST THAT, DISPLAYS. The serious jobs like share counting, payouts etc. are completely different routines and are completely unaffected by the statistics displays.

Statistics are recalculated every minute.

Share counting, payouts etc. are run every time a new block comes on the network (regardless if the pool solved it or not). However, this being this is a proportional pool, you will only see balance changes when the pool solves a block.

I know 120 confirms to get paid seems like alot of time right now with the high difficulty/low hash situation.  If I see enough interest in the pool, I will invest my own coin to float coin base maturity and shorten that up quite a bit, maybe down to something around 10 confirms.

any good pools ?

I´m using this one:  http://75.156.208.65:6327, point your miners at this URL, use your BTE address as your user, no password needed.

This is my pool, I've been very busy with real life obligations lately and I haven't had the time to work on the pool very much.

The pool does work and has been quite stable, although there are some issues with it also.

The front end currently has an issue with getting the data from the backend, if you navigate to http://75.156.208.65:6327 the site shows up, but the graphs and data don't until you select a time frame. The auto-refresh is broken, and as are the recently solved blocks and current payout amount pages. I can assure you however this does not effect the pools ability to provide work, and although I can't get it to display correctly I can also assure you it is tracking shares and providing payouts properly. If at any time that does not function properly I will disable the pool so that no one loses out on mining rewards.

Although the latest release of p2pool is claimed to provide proper support for high hash rate asic miners, CrazyEarner was kind enough to help me test the newest version and unfortunately it does not appear to have addressed the problems. This is an issue with p2pool itself which I am not able to address directly. I will continue to test new versions as they are available and will update the live pool if we can come up with an asic ready p2pool solution. Past that, I am looking into other pool server options which may prove to be a better solution then p2pool offers.

I will also mention, I haven't been promoting the pool very much, as I feel in its current state although still working I would be much happier promoting a more refined system. Along with the issues noted above, I will fully admit I am quite new to being on the operators end of a pool, and while I do work very hard to ensure the best possible service to miners I am still learning much as I go and I may not always have the answers to questions or problems as they arise. I do intend to continue working on this however, as I know there is a demand for a solid Bytecoin pool. Also, the Bytecoin network really needs more mining so that we can get past this difficulty adjustment.

Finally, for those who do wish to mine Bytecoins on a pool: if you are willing to see past the current shortcomings, I certainly encourage you to give the pool a try. I am available here via PM, and also keep up to date on most of the Bytecoin related threads I am aware of. I have not yet started my own thread for the pool, I likely will wait until I have a more polished service to publish and put more energy into promoting the pool.

To use the pool, direct your miners to http://75.156.208.65:6327  use your desired BTE payout address as your username, and you may leave password blank or provide one if you wish, the pool server ignores any submitted passwords and only tracks shares to the BTE address. The pool payout system is PPLNS, and sends your payment as part of the generation transation. If you are unaware this means that newly minted coins you earn must wait a full 120 confirmations which is somewhat lengthy due to the Bytecoin network's state. This is a "feature" of p2pool which I am unable to change, and one other reason I believe alternate pool software is going to be my best course of action. I would much rather be able to provide instant payouts from a currently confirmed balance, so miners only have to wait 6 confirmations before they can spend their earnings.

I will close with letting you know, my ultimate goal is once a merged mining compatable Bytecoin client has been coded, I would like to reconfigure my pool to mine BTC primarily, and merged mine as many sha-256 compatible coins including BTE as possible. This likely will take some time, but I know this is something many people would be interested in. As time and other developments allow I surely hope to make that a reality.

Cheers everyone!

Digigami

Edit to add x2 :P

- I forgot to mention, this pool is running with 0 fees. I couldn't justify a fee especially in its current condition. I likely will continue to run it with no fees until at least I have a much more presentable and feature rich pool to offer. :)
- Support is available here via PM to myself, or on freenode in channel #crypto-expert or #digipool Both of these channels also have IrcBots who will announce whenever the pool solves a block, and the payout address of the miner who solved it.

Once this is done it will most likely be time to decide to have a hard fork. I am opening a poll to gain people's view on wether anything else should be changed at this moment in time

I thought I'd give solo mining a try with this coin. After about 1/2 a day, I was super pleased to have found a block! Awesome.

The bad news is that just a few hours later, the block I found was ORPHANED.  >:( >:( :'( It's not like the same block was solved simultaneously as mine, it was hours later.

So I'm pretty pissed at that and just about ready to drop Bytecoin. It's hard to have faith in the coin when basic things like this happen.

gyruss, you do have to understand that the really high difficulty doesnt help the case. It takes hours to find blocks atm thats why this merged mining patch is needed

As Ahmed_bodi pointed out this is an effect of difficulty and the overall network condition at the moment. An unfortunate problem no doubt, but don't let it mean your ready to give up already!

My pool seems to have a pretty high % of the total network hashrate at the moment, and likely what happened is my BTE node did not recieve your solved block broadcast before the pool mined a block itself. If you are going to keep trying solo, add my node to your bytecoin.conf file "addnode=75.156.208.65" and this way the pool will see your mined blocks right away, and instead of continuing to work on one at the same height the pool will start working on top of your solved block and help ensure it's confirmed and stays in the block chain.

Hope that helps, and I'd be happy to help you if there's anything else I can do.

Thanks Ahmed_bodi and Digigami,

That makes a bit more sense. I guess the overall network is a bit fragmented with very few nodes available, hence the gaps. How is this affecting the difficulty though. My miner (bfgminer) says that the network has over 200 GH/s rate, but when I look at CoinChoose, the hash rate is listed as only ~9 GH/s. How often are blocks supposed to be generated? Bitcoin is supposed to be about every 10 minutes, correct? If Bytecoin is supposed to be 1:1 to bitcoin, then the difficulty seems too high because blocks are not being solved for hours (last I checked).

I understand that merged mining should help, because that would allow more people to mine while mining Bitcoin. But are there any stats on how many people merge mine or what the merge mine hash rate is? The only pool I know (besides P2Pool merge mining) that does merged mining is Bitparking, and their hash rate is only 9k GH/s.

Thanks again.

Okay, so I've done a little more mining with Bytecoin, to see if adding more nodes has helped. I was able to mine two blocks. The first block is showing up in CryptoCoinExplorer, and it shows up as having 2 confirmations, so I am assuming that it is fairly permanent.

The second block on the other hand, doesn't show up yet on CryptoCoinExplorer. I am wondering if it is in the network at all or just on my local box. Is there a way to resubmit a solution to a block that has not been orphaned yet?

Looks like my second block solved today will be orphaned. Having a tough time trusting the network here. I solved the block 3-4 hours ago, and another block has just recently been solved in its place. If the network can't sync a single transaction in hours timeframe, it doesn't look good.

It could be a hostile node with lots of hash power

ill set up another p2pool node so we can balance the high hash on Digigami's pool and you can join that

Right, heres the deal, im looking for someone who's a pro with github to join the dev team, anyone interested plz contact me or Digigami. Anyways in other news, the patch is ready it just needs applying to the client which is what the github bro is wanted for :P. Secondly we have a nice stable pool almost ready, just making the finishing touches. this will be a stratum Avalon and other ASIC friendly Pool PROP with 0 fees

In side news only 1k blocks left of high diff,.

merge mining a coin makes its value less just look at i0coin ixcoin devcoin namecoin and so on if its merge mined people will just mine bitcoin and dump the merge mined coin

This is a subject which has been discussed at length in other threads and something I no longer wish to discuss. I'm going to create the client and release it with the agreement of being consistently up to date with the bitcoin base. The chain with 51% of the hash will win as expected. I will request doublc not to join until we have a consensus on the agreed fork. If the majority hash want merged mining to take place then that version will become the main chain. If the majority of people wantbytecoin to exist on the current path. Then everyone is free to do so. That is the fair way to do so

Definitly were on our third or forth block I think. At this rate well fly through these blocks and bring bytecoin back to profitability. I've had a rethink on the merged mining and changed my mind. Decided to wait for the diff derop see how the network goes and only implement merged mining if neccesary

If anyone has anything they think should be included on there, links to info, resources, mining pools etc that aren't on this thread feel free to add them here and I'll make sure it goes on the site :)

Hopefully it does this coin some good.

its not dead its in hiding and ive purposely kept it like that. ive asked for it to be removed from coinchoose and couinwarz. that way we can see how bte holds up without flash mining

So what is the recommended mining pool software for this coin?  Should we use https://github.com/slush0/stratum-mining

I mined some blocks in the 24192 - 26208 epoch.  The difficulty was 14202.  I miscalculated, and thought the block rate was 10 blocks / hour (6 min each) rather than 6 blocks / hour (10 min each) and as a result I mined a little too fast and the difficulty rose to 20975.

I have cut back the GH/s that I am sending to BTE.  For the past 24 hours, the mining rate has been about 2.5 blocks / hour.  This will cause the chain to stay relatively updated, and the difficulty should drop.  If anyone flash mines faster after 14 days, the difficulty will still drop.  A few people dropped in with huge hash rates and mined a few blocks during the past week, then left again.

I will try to strike a balance of gaining coins & keeping the difficulty low.

I would like to have software that will work with the cgminer API, perhaps in Python, and send lots of hashpower when there is a transaction to process, and then wait for a timeout to send more hashpower.

I am using the original client with success.  This is not merge mined.
There is a stratum pool available, at stratum+tcp://stratum.coinex.pw:9022  This pool requires you to register and to use a worker name/password.
I have pointed a portion of an Avalon toward the pool.  The three day average since the last difficulty change gives 3.48 blocks / hour with an expected difficulty drop in 20 days.
I will try to keep my hashrate low enough that the difficulty drops, but the long range forecast is that Avalon owners will move to BTE as their net earnings fall to their electricity cost.  I may switch my strategy as things evolve.

bte.cryptocoinexplorer.com resolves to 84.200.4.218
I see connections to that address in my debug.log, and I see block numbers that are more recent.

Also, do you want me to work on a Chinese translation, think it should be pretty easy. ahmed_bodi would you upload for us if I translate the website?

I think the name is very bad for the original Bitcoin. Investors shall be confused with more Bitcoin coins and there will be less investments. Local stores are going to think "what a mess" and consumers are not adopting because there is no "clear simple story" to tell.

The next coin can be named
- Bitcoin Alt
- Bitcoin Crypt
- Bitcrypt Coin
- Bitcoin Cash
and so on. You made it a mess in the hope to fill your own pockets....

Even before the BTC is adopted worldwide by local stores and consumers, you are allready seeding confusion in a bad way.
Very very bad. And remember, till so far, only the BTC (and on some sites, LTC) is the "way out" to dollars or euro's.
This "way out" is as we speak the only reason that people in the street will adopt BTC as value.

So when you disadvantage the original BTC, you disadvantage yourself, your adopters, and your miners.
And not only you, you also disadvantage all the other coins, miners, investers and so on.

Bitcoin-scrypt shall never be accepted at your local stores or big webstores and because of the name, you are delaying the needed adoption of the real BTC. That adoption is needed to raise the value of the BTC, and in that way, all the other coins.

People are working worldwide so hard to make it true and people are investing so much money to change the world we live in, and the only thing you can think about is to fill your pockets by choosing a confusing name that brings damage to the whole process.

You are not creative to choose a stunning name. You cannot create a cool logo. You have no good scrypt vision. There is no good story behind the name. You have no connections to make some good business plans.
All you can do is setup a coin (wich can be done in hours), copy a name, generate a wallet and mine 6 months upfront, and then you will tell the world this should be the next big thing.....

There is also a "bitcoin scrypt coin". More confusion is coming to town....

It's a pity....
