Title: Bitcoin EU Convention 2013 (Amsterdam, Netherlands September 26th~28th)
Post by: Rassah on August 02, 2013, 06:05:37 PM
Bitcoin convention in Amsterdam, on the weekend of September 26th to 28th.
Tickets are now for sale. More info available here

http://theconference.eu

Convention is run by Moe Levin, with finances handled by me. The brains (or drive, or ideas) behind it are Matthew N. W's and Moe's, but, Matthew, understanding his established reputation, he has left all control of the convention to Moe and myself. Tickets are €150.  We have a few speakers lined up, and plenty of attendees buying tickets already, so it should be a fun conference.

I'll post more info once I get some free time, and more as I get it. Any questions can be directed to me or Matthew. I'll try to be more polite in answering them though  ;D

EDIT: The multiple other threads related to this have been locked, since we were in the process of finding a venue, and they didn't have correct information.

Thanks - I am an Amsterdam fan... visiting the city 2-3 times a year (business plus private) & I am thinking to invest there too. But any recommendations for some new good restaurants and places are welcome!

There are so many threads about this conference, all with different dates. Even though they are locked, it took some time for me to find this one. Maybe it is a good idea to edit dates in their titles and to put links to this thread.

Sorry about that. The person managing communications for this conference kept starting threads with dates before we even had a venue pinned down, so the dates kept changing as we kept negotiating the where and when, and then he got banned from the forum for arguing with a mod... Of something... So the most we could do is ask those threads to be locked. I don't think he'll be doing any more communications for this any time soon :)

Updated speaker list, including members of the bitcoin foundation.

Also, Germany has recognized the use of Bitcoin as legal currency, so we're bringing in the lawyers that have helped make it happen from Winheller Law Firm.

Don't have the cash to attend but it would be fun if there was a side "Satoshi square" type meeting. Unfortunately the regular Bitcoin Wednesday organizers stick to the first Wednesday of September which is too early (and the first Wednesday of October is too late).  :(

The organizer of the Dutch Satoshi Square (Bitcoin Wednesday) is Pikapay (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=70234).

I haven't been in Amsterdam for years. Would be nice to go there again for a Bitcoin meeting though.

I'd love to see that happen! Or even a bitcoin marketplace, where people can come and buy/sell random stuff for bitcoin. I'll definitely have lots of coins with me on hand.

what about sunny king from PPcoin? would love to get more info about that :)

plus, is there something like a time schedule for the 3 days?
like, at which time do the first speakers start, when does it end in the evenings, who speaks on which day etc?

We'd love to have Sunny King. We'll reach out this week.

Right now, we have about 40 speakers and 6 panels. Today we confirmed Roger Ver from Memorydealers, Aaron Koenig from the Berlin Bitcoin Exchange, Jacob Boersma from Innopay, and Robert Nederhoed from Bitmymoney.

As you can imagine, some of these speakers have some time limitations, so we are still creating the ideal schedule which can have adequate times for networking, drinks (obviously), and business. For now, our schedule is 9am-6pm for each day, divided into sections for networking, speeches, panels, and lunch. I promise to give you the full details soon.

If you have any other suggestions, feel free to contact me, would love to hear all your ideas!

Moe

Why are the attendee tickets so expensive compared to the vendor tickets in the first place?
Usually its the vendors and promoters carrying the most load.

Hi there Bernard,

Thanks for the question.

Maybe you can elaborate a bit for me, as I think that the cost of €150 for attendance for a three day conference that has attracted international guests and well-known speakers is more than palatable. Doubly so when you consider costs for other events.

As for the vendor fee; to be able to promote your product at this event will garner you leads, connections, and networking value that far exceeds the €750 it costs to be a vendor here.

Ohhh, i somehow understood these are day passes.
And i didnt mean vendor fees are high, but the opposite. And this usually is used to keep the costs for visitors low.

Ah, I see. Glad I could clarify things.

As much as we'd love to, cost can't realistically go much lower for either, as the expenses for putting this on are considerable.

Have a lovely evening!

It gets very tricky very fast for people to share tickets, becoming a logistical nightmare if people want to buy tickets for single days and sell them for the next days.

I'd like to offer you a discount on tickets for you and your wife, considering the situation.

Sent you a PM.

I myself run a startup company that is developing an exchange market for digital and virtual currency (virtual currency being currency from large game economies such as World of Warcraft or EVE Online). I'm very much looking forward to meeting people in the business and networking my ass off.

Streaming is a bit complicated.

Ideally, we have high def screening made available in real-time at no cost to viewer or to us.

There are technically skilled Dutch people in the Bitcoin community who have expressed their interest in helping to record and stream. Nothing confirmed yet, but we're optimistic.

As a backup, I've asked the technicians at the venue if they can provide streaming, and they will get back to us with costs that we can hopefully find a sponsor for.

To the entrepreneurial people reading this. There's a free ticket and payment available if you can make streaming happen smoothly.

Let me know if you have a different solution?

Ps. You can't meet people and shake hand via the internet. Come in person and say hi yourself!

Video Recording is more important than streaming unless there is a (mediated) feedback from the remote audience, IMHO.

I will be traveling from Iceland to attend the confrence :)

Bring some hákarl with you. I'll give you some bitcoins for it.

 ;D

I am serious. I know they sell it in sealed plastic packages. Try not to get the kind that was pissed on though, please.

You got it. Ill also bring some other Icelandic goodies with me.

It's poisonous shark that's been burried and left to "ferment" (rot) for months until the poison gets diluted, then hung to dry and rot some more. It tastes like jello that's been made with Clorox bleach. Tastes HORRIBLE! But not as bad as surstroming. Goes well with vodka when frozen though.

Oh that stuff! I saw a documentary about it. But no thanks, I wouldn't want to eat that. I will just drink the vodka if you don't mind.

I'll be taking shark (hákarl) with me, hardfish (harđfiskur) and brennivín (the Icelandic "vodka" to drink with the shark).

For myself, I would like to get some old Pesetas for my collection, if there are any laying around unloved.
100s 500s or 25s with the hole in it are my favorites.  Condition is not so important.  I like to study how they wear out as well as how they look when they are new and beautiful.

Well... - anyone here any additional idea, where I can stay for at max. 50-60€ all those 4 nights at Amsterdam?

I tried round about 20 (personal) messages on couchsurfing already without any success so far... - my budget this month is quite tight, cause i'm heading to Cyprus next month.

I was trying to find cheap options too... but Amsterdam is sooo expensive. Just one bed in mixed room is 30-40€/day lol.
Finally I took "The Student Hotel", but it is about 100€/night... and is one of the cheapest one.

I guess your plan is going to be impossible, unless you find some friend or you sleep on the street.

Everyone has to start somewhere but one is not a very good number to get, you pay more and also then you will be unlikely to spend it, and that is what it is made to do, circulate...   :)

I am hoping to meet some folks that can take a lot of them.  Then I can send others to them that just want a few and they won't have to pay the burdensome shipping and delay from the US.  The thing about the physical pieces, they are best for in-person transactions and so help to build a community of folks around you that are also more resilient to economic shenanigans by TPTB.

Over the past few weeks, we have been giving tickets to students doing reports on bitcoin to attend this conference. I've offered them free or heavily discounted tickets as I believe that integrating students and universities in this convention will be good for the future of bitcoin.

I have told them that they can feel free to ask people about bitcoin and write about what is being talked about. Please be welcoming. We were all students once.

Will there be a video covering of the event for those of us unable to go?

Wish I could go but 150 euro + hotel costs is too much for me.

Maybe next time you could consider single day tickets. I live in NL and could easily go to Amsterdam for a day.

So, little update.

We've arranged to have custom name badges done by the guys at bit-card www.bit-card.de (http://www.bit-card.de), preloaded with 1mBTC, as the for all attendees.

I got the sample in the mail today. They are the size of a credit card, though a tiny bit thicker.

Hope you like them!

So, little update.

We've arranged to have custom name badges done by the guys at bit-card www.bit-card.de, preloaded with 1mBTC, as the for all attendees.

I got the sample in the mail today. They are the size of a credit card, though a tiny bit thicker.

Hope you like them!
That is awesome! And a great promotion for them :P

are single day tickets available? I live in A'dam but don't feel the need to attend 3 days. Enjoy Amsterdam all who attend!

Single day tickets are not available. Maybe next time!

Full fare is probably worth it even for a single day anyhow.  I don't know how you are doing it so inexpensively.

I've decided to make available a special commemorative edition of the Bitcoin Silver COLD HARD CASH quarter bitcoin, at the Convention.  No one will be able to get one unless they are there, in person.
Others will probably have to get them from you if they want one.  ;)
So if you are going and can stand to part with it, there might be some collector that will buy it from you.

These will only ever be available until Oct 31 2013 (The 5th anniversary of the Satoshi Nakamoto white paper).  After that, never made again, and the first place they will be, is at the Bitcoin EU Convention 2013, September 26th~28th

Some details are here:

Hi folks, I'm attending the Bitcoin EU Conference and have a great interest in reduced trust bitcoin escrows for easier/safer btc - fiat trading.  In particular I'm interested in making reduced trust escrows using pay-to-script hash (BIP 0016) with m-of-n signature scripts (BIP 0011).  Anyone else attending and interested in chatting on this topic?  I'll be in Amsterdam Sept 26 - leaving Oct 1.

I really should read the white paper and everything that has to do with BitCoin. I understand almost nothing about the technical part of BitCoin. Shame on me!

Yes. It is great to know.  And knowing will help you a lot in these days, however for Bitcoin to ever be mainstream, in my opinion it will have to eventually be completely unimportant to those using it to understand ECC, block chains, proof of work or anything technical really..

Sounds quite interesting - thanks für sharing the information.  :)

I'll reach Amstel Station at 4:15 PM and would like to be there at least for the talk about Bitcoin Startups at 5 PM.... -is that possible? Question to the locals in Amsterdam:  How can I get there the fastest way possible (without using a cab)? Bus, Train? A 4-day-ticket for the public traffic system is 19,50€, right?

Take a train from Schiphol at platform 1 or 2 to Amsterdam Centraal. 5 day pass is 24€ I think.

Also, all vendor tickets are sold out. Grab your tickets before they run out as well!

Someone of the Dutch Bank will be there? That is awesome news. I cannot wait!

Dear All,
I am one of the hosts for the "regulation" panel, and i'd be interested in which questions you would like to have answered during our discussion.
We aim at having different points of view on stage, that's why we have a diverse set of speakers (Central Bank vs Chairman of the fundation, Police vs Tax attorneys), but to make it more interesting for everyone, i'd like to hear from you about which topics you'd like to see covered.

I can't promise that all your suggestions would be included in the final list of questions, but we'll try  ;D

So please go ahead and give your suggestions if you'd like to.

On a more personal level, I'm looking forward to meet you all at the event, and possibly also the night before/after. I too am a local, perhaps we should organize an "official" pre and afterparty (if noone has done so already)

Alex

A few ideas...

From the Central Bank, it would be good to hear
- The policy goal of regulation.  (Why regulate?)
- With Bitcoin existing along with Fiat currency, is there any damage to the capability of money supply manipulation to achieve economic goals (growth vs inflation)?
- What is the balance of risks from gaining a new payment method that reduces the friction of internet commerce and so can increase trade with the loss of centralized control over the money supply?

From the police,
- What Bitcoin crimes have they had reported?
- What does investigating Bitcoin cost them?
- If any Bitcoin crime are reported, is it easier or harder to investigate with the availability of the Block Chain?

From the Tax Attorneys
- Comment on Bitcoin as a unit of account?
- How any tax liabilities from Bitcoin appreciation are handled?
- How much state tax revenue is there from Bitcoin economy?

From Chairman of the Foundation,
- Counterpoints to any of the above.
- How decentralization, pseudo-anonymity, forensic accounting of the block chain, and predictable money supply achieve many of the goals of the interlocutors or make them more simple once understood.
- Why Bitcoin is not just good for people, but also for civilization.

Thanks for these suggestions, will definitely be considered.

Also, we will allow for some interaction with the crowd (we will have to limit it though, keep in mind the limited time slot), so if you would still like to ask particular questions, you are more than welcome to join in the Q&A part, if you are planning to attend.

Alright trying not to get overly complex here, but I'm a sucker for bars in foreign countries... Is this plan largely agreeable before I start publicizing it:

Wednesday the 25th: Nothing official, but for those that like to unwind after travel and still get the chance to meet Bitcoiners Paradox Coffee Shop in Jordaan starting at 9:00PM (has great reviews!) Site: http://www.paradoxcoffeeshop.com/ Map: http://goo.gl/bwQbVX

Thursday the 26th: Meet up for drinks and cigars at the sleek Bo Cinq Bar starting at 8:00 PM Site: http://www.bocinq.nl/ Map: http://goo.gl/tvxW79

Friday the 27th: Conference has started, and likely plans will evolve, but if nothing is set into motion come to the famous Cafe Sound Garden (rated top 10 bars) in Jordaan at 7:30 PM for networking and chitchat (only a few minutes walk from conference) Site: http://www.cafesoundgarden.nl Map: http://goo.gl/YulcMM

Dear all,
as an update to the regulation panel, we now added our last speaker: Michael Maier from Fidor bank. You might have heard of fidor because of their partnership with Bitcoin.de.
This is a great "replacement" for our dropped out speaker from Bitcoin-Central, who is too busy managing their comeback to attend the event.

The "regulation of bitcoin" panel will therefore see on stage:
1. Dutch Central Bank
2. Joerg Platzer (bitcoin entrepreneur and chairman candidate)
3. Amsterdam police
4. Finnius, a law firm knowledgeable about bitcoin and tax-related issues
5. Fidor bank

If you have any specific questions for Fidor bank that you would like to be asked, please feel free to share. We will pick according to the time limitations.
Also, you are very much welcome to ask questions during the panel session on Thursday at 3.30pm. Please don't grill them too hard!  8)

See you at the event, it's gonna be good

Most people need to work at thursday and friday.
And buying a 150 eur ticket for saturday only is a bit to much for me.

I would love to come by at saturday and join for one day, but I guess I can't.  :(

It's Icelandic shark. I'll quote Rassah on this.

Quote
It's poisonous shark that's been burried and left to "ferment" (rot) for months until the poison gets diluted, then hung to dry and rot some more. It tastes like jello that's been made with Clorox bleach. Tastes HORRIBLE! But not as bad as surstroming. Goes well with vodka when frozen though.

I heard they eat this in Norway too (didn't know it was poisonous and a shark though). The person telling me this says it's nearly impossible to keep down. Sounds yummy!

My deep apologies to those anticipating my session on Thursday morning at 10:10am in Amsterdam.  As it turns, out I will need to miss the flight that would have brought me there on time and will be making a later one and so, not arriving until Thursday evening.
It can't be helped, and I wish it were otherwise...

I don't know yet if the conference scheduling will accommodate a different session at this late hour, but I've asked. In any case I look forward to discovering that, and meeting as many of you as possible after I arrive Thursday evening.

So there no single day tickets available, right?
Most people need to work at thursday and friday.
And buying a 150 eur ticket for saturday only is a bit to much for me.

I would love to come by at saturday and join for one day, but I guess I can't.  :(
Can anyone help me out with the question quoted above?

It should, but it doesn't. Really strang

EDIT: Already found why. They fucked up the project.properties file. There it targets Android API level 12.
Android 2.2 is API level 7 or 8.

i keep a small amount of BTC on my localbitcoin account for conducting transactions, so i quite often use this as a wallet when out and about.

Minimum Android Version: 2.3.3. It won't work on my tablet.

EDIT 1: Dammit. I cannot change the Wallet code, because it implements .jar files that are missing in the project.

EDIT 2: Made a issue (https://github.com/blockchain/My-Wallet-Android/issues/22), I don't think they will fix it before Friday, but still. Anyone else got an idea? Else I need to use the Android web browser or take my laptop with me.

EDIT 3: I found "Mycelium Bitcoin Wallet (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycelium.wallet)", which is compatible with my tablet. So that problem is solved ::)

I will arrive at centraal station quite late (I guess around 23:00). I will therefore not go to the pre-event as it is a bit far to go at the hour. However, if any of you are somewhere central in a bar of coffeeshop please let me know by PM or in this thread and I might drop in if I'm not too tired. Anyone else staying at the Hans Brinker Hotel?

Will the coffeeshop be open? It states 10:00-20:00 every day.

Oh yeah! I should have mentioned that! paradox is a quite local place and closer quite early 19.00 - 20.00.

If you want a bar where you can smoke and drink i recommend the doors palace on spuistraat, it is quite spacious also compared to most bars/coffeeshops

It iis technically illegal to sell cannabis and alcohol, so coffeeshops don't sell both.

Some bars let you smoke inside them though(like the doors palce), i was thinking by having a coffeeshop for your venue seriously reduced your audience to those that smoked bud.

I have never been in the bar beside 1e though.

edit: you really are limiting yourself though, as there is not much else in that area( i live on the next street)

Just out of curiosity, am i the only one that decided to book today (because i'm too lazy) and was sent to "Bastion Deluxe Hotel Amsterdam Airport" from booking.com?

It would be nice if there was some other bitcoiner around there :)

I just got here, have the couches upstairs.. Don't think anyone is here yet- hope nobody is waiting at paradox!

Edit: I'm wearing a blazer

So sad, I arrived at 21h, waited 15 minutes. I didn't see no one and because I was having no internet connection I left.
But no problem, we have lot of days to speak and enjoy  :D

BTW if anyone wants cash I can take your bitcoins for Bitstamp -5%. I don't have a lot of cash so I won't be able to cover big orders.

If you are writing code for a telco it could help.  BGP is for the bigger players, but OSPF and RIP are still abundant.
It still sounds like more fun than sitting in a Heathrow lounge waiting on a connecting flight, which is where I am now.

According to people on Yelp, a good place to wind down if you had enough of the uberhip (gentrified) Amsterdam, favoured by alto's and tourists, men with a pony tail in a ragged Iron Maiden shirt, guys with large beer bellies and arms full of tattoos, people with green hair and Englishmen who like to drink half litre pints. It looks like a squat and you can play pool and table football (foosball) there.  ;)

The game will start right after the conference, we're going to hold it at a bar/restaurant so even if you're not interested in playing you can still come and hang out.

I'll be using TripAdvisor's Amsterdam City Guide to do walking tours  around the city. I have mobile web here, so feel free to hit me up here on the forums, or email me at rassah@xnicole.com

Oh, and thanks everyone for coming. All of us were very happy about how the convention turned out. It greatly surpassed our expectations  :)

The best way to do that is grab a boat and captain around

Heading out to National Maritime Museum, near Amsterdam Centraal.

Will look for a cafe for lunch, as close to the museum as possible.  Will sit outside, if people want to meet up.

After getting a terrible cold yesterday, ended up sleeping in today. Heading out now. Will do a Jordaan walking tour from TripAdvisor Amsterdam app, followed by arts history tour. Will have to do museums tomorrow, since it's late today.

If someone finds a nice place to have dinner, let us know.

Boca's is nice in the jordaan. Make a reservation. Not terribly expensive and fantastic meat platters.

As I mentioned at the after-conf party last night:

Somebody needs to pick a location for Amsterdam's "Satoshi Square."

The Dutch are famous for finance... it is Just Not Right for there to not be a Satoshi Square anywhere.

Are there any outdoor locations close to Centraal, with wifi?

Dam square seems like a natural choice, famous site with lots of tourist to say "What the hell are those people doing? You mean I can get Euros when I need them?"

At least that's what I would say since it took me 2 hours to find a money changer.

What about a simple ATM? Dutch people carry very few cash nowdays. You can pay everywhere with your bankpas or, from home, with the dutch internet paysistem iDeal. And, of course, somewhere with bitcoin too :)

How about
De Luwte on Leliegratch 26 for some Dutch food?

Or should we just meet at Boca at 8, and go walking to look for a place at 8:30?

Edit: since it's so late, let's meet at Boca and go from there.

I cannot make 8 hour. The bus just left and I have to wait an half hour for the next bus and it takes another half hour to get in Amsterdam alone. Just tell me where you guys will be and I will try to come (if it isn't to late then).
