Title: MyEtherWallet Password
Post by: unplug on January 30, 2018, 07:48:55 AM
I forgot my MyEtherWallet password. I don't see "forgot password" in MyEtherWallet website. Is this means that I can't change my password anymore? Anyone have suggestions about this matter? Kindly share it to me please. Thanks!

Do you mean you forgot your private key? There is no way to retreive your private key. You are the only one responsible for your private key.

Copied from the MeW website:

MyEtherWallet.com does not hold your keys for you. We cannot access accounts, recover keys, reset passwords, nor reverse transactions. Protect your keys & always check that you are on correct URL.  You are responsible for your security.

I'm afraid you probably can not be helped anymore, unless of course you saved the private access key that is issued when you register your wallet. Perhaps, of course, I'm mistaken, because I'm not an expert in MEW. But I think you should try to write in support.

There is no password.

When you created wallet on Myetherwallet you got your keys, you probably save them to your PC.
Because you have used them at least once to check your balance?

So the question you must ask yourself did you ever opened your wallet after initial creation, if not there is a good chance that you never downloaded your keys in the first place.

When you created your Myetherwallet account, it gave you an option to save the key on your computer. Just check files on your computer, maybe you'll find the file. The recommendation was also to write everything down. If you haven't done it, unfortunately, you cannot do anything about it :(

Did you save your private key?
If you don't have a private key, you may lose it forever, and if you keep the private key, just transfer it to another wallet that supports erc20.

Forgetting the password doesn't have anything to do with it (if you save the private key)
Because you forgot the password, you can't log in the account, so you can reimport the private key.

Changes the password require data from your wallet such as private key or Keystore / JSON File if this gone or you forget to save it your wallet and its contents is also gone.

if there are nothing inside it, it is better you create new wallet and save all of what they want you to save ( the file, key and password ) but if there are something inside it, sorry for your loss. i think there are nothing that can be retrieved if you don't have your private key

Do not get too freaked out, your wallet is still safe and tokens will not be lost.
You still have jason files, and can be used to open your wallet. You must use metamask

Hi guys, he lost the password instead of losing tokens stored in myetherwallet (MEW). And if he uses Json's file to open it, he must also remember the password to enter the depth of his wallet. And to my knowledge he can open it if he has a private key to open the wallet he uses. And if he does not have it it may be very difficult to be able to reopen the wallet. I think MEW help can not help to open the wallet

If you have the json file and forgot the password, you won't be able to retrieve it any longer.
If you don't have the private key as well for that wallet, then whatever is in that wallet is - "burned" / irretrievable.  :'(

Next time, save both the json file+password and the private key. In case you lose one, you can still recover using the other.

Its not password its your private key in your etherwallet you must secure it do not send to the airdrop or your bitcointalk account because you will officially scam or hack your etherwallet because you send your privatekey be careful for fillup

Actually, I don't understand why MEW ask you a password to give you an address, as it seems it has no use.

MEW makes an ETHER address for you and tells you to add a password to encrypt your keys. This is a pretty smart thing to do. If someone were to steal your laptop tomorrow it will take them some time to crack open the encrypted keystore (JSON), you can use this time to access your address from a backup and move your funds.

Myetherwallet doesn't require password to access your wallet, If you're talking about the private key, bad luck for you, because you cannot recover the private key anymore, your only option is to create or to have another Etherium Wallet.
Note: No one can change Private key.

Title: Re: MyEtherWallet Password
Post by: Nilupulie on January 30, 2018, 09:13:01 AM
When you create the Myether wallet initially you should save your private key. Did you save it to your laptop? If you save it you can log in using this private key and no need of the password. Just keep in mind that myether wallet does not store any passwords, private keys or backup keys like other websites. If you lost your password or keys unfortunately there is no way to recover it.

If you forgot your private key you will not open your account to myetherwallet.  Because you cannot forgot password your password to that wallet because in the first place they did not use email. I suggest to those have people have wallet tk myetherwallet better to secure your private key you need to save it to place safe like have password and not only 1 better to save to other documents incase they have problem you can access because you have other option .

He probably means password to create wallet.

OP you need private key to access wallet, not password, if you have lost private key then you have lost your funds. Create new wallet and save private key somewhere(print it on paper, usb and so on).

MEW has the private keys so you can access your wallet if you still have your private keys. The password is just option for read only purpose you can create new passwords if you have the private keys.

Private key = password.

Indeed.

Now what's the solution for you? It's simple, you can't do anything about it at all and there is no way to get into it now onwards. The thing is when you create a account you get notified by the MEW many times that you should save your private keys and keystore file somewhere safe. But people don't even care to read it and just rush to get into it.

While creating the wallet you are prompted to download the keystore file, so if somehow it is in your history or in the downloads then you could be lucky enough to access that wallet.

Otherwise there is no way to get into it.

If you have your private key and downloaded the json file. You can access your wallet. But if haven't save your  private key and the json file then you will not recover your funds. You need to create another wallet again and secure your private key.

Myetherwallet Password, what do you really mean? There are no provision for such, what you actually need is your private key and if you miss it or lose it than you will have no access to that wallet again, that why you need to handle your private key as gold or a life you don,t want to miss.

Title: Re: MyEtherWallet Password

The password which you type initially doesnt really matter as long as you saved your private key, if you remember that you opened that wallet once, then theres a good change that you have your UTC formatted json key in your laptop because MEW will only let you enter the priv key to open the wallet once you downloaded your utc json file.

There will be no password for the Myetherwallet , only private key ,
when you first generate your address they have given you the phrase and Private key , without that you can't access your wallet .

Sorry to say this ,

For any chance check that you may have taken the backup of saved the private key some where in your system .

When you registering on MEW you have to save your private key and JSON File with your own passwor to decrypt it . What password you have forgot ? If you cant't login via private key use a JSON option , or vice versa . If you lost both ... well , you should create a new wallet in this case

If you will going to open your wallet choosing Keystore/Json file then they will ask for password after you open the save Keystore file in your folder but if you don't want to use password, choose private key and enter your private keys then click the unlock button but if you forgot your password for Keystore or did not backup your private key then better to create new wallet and save booth password and private keys in your safe folder. I just feel sorry for you if you're former wallet have already deposited tokens because there is no way to retrieve them.

Creating a MEW password simply helps the protocol create you a unique private key. Once you have your private key, you no longer need the password you typed in. As long as your private key is safe and unknown to anyone but you, your funds will be safe

This is an incorrect statement. If you use the Keystore/JSON File to log in, the myetherwallet will require a password.
I always save two options for authorization - private key and Keystore/JSON File.
It is impossible to recover if you lose them.

There is no option to retrieve your password and private key in myetherwallet because myetherwallet is open source and they does not hold your password and private key. Password is only required if you login your account with UTC file otherwise you can login your account with private key if you have access of that.

No problem if you forgot your password it is required when you access your account with UTC/JSON file. You can direct access your account with private key only. There is no provision of password recovery in MEW. You may write to support MEW.

The thing is that there is no way to retrieve your private key. You are the only one responsible for your private key.

How on earth can you lose it? it should be noted on paper and stored in the bank, in few deferent countries. Or safer bet will remember it and then eat the note.

I'm afraid you probably can not be helped anymore, unless of course you saved the private access key that is issued when you register your wallet. Perhaps, of course, I'm mistaken, because I'm not an expert in MEW. But I think you should try to write in support.

Sorry for your lost dude if that wallet have a huge balance well, then i say bye bye to them. First instruction when you created a wallet in myetherwallet is to keep safe your private and print it into a sheet of paper or save at you device file because you are the one who knows you private key and also you are the one who have responsibility to keep that. If you don't have a private key, you may lose it forever, and if you keep the private key, just transfer it to another wallet that supports erc20.

I dont think he save his myetherwallet private as his op.
After this happen. None people can help you mate.
Take this case as your experience then you will not do the same thing again. I hope you dont have much asset in that wallet because if you have alot, you might be crying long time.

Myetherwallet is not providing forgot wallet features because scammers can use this for manipulating mew account.  You can't change it by the way. The only possible way if you have your privatekey and then you can try to open your wallet through your privatekey. And this is the only way for you. You have no another option.

When creating a new wallet, try to create a private file in text and put it somewhere! Best wallet maker on the offline computer! Limit open wallet online and use a wallet for small and regular transactions.

There is no option to recover your myetherwallet password if you forget it. Password is required only if you login your account with utc file and if you have your private key intact then still you can login your account without password.

There is nice page generated for new MyEtherWallet wallets with ETH address and Private Key.
The safest way to store it:
- print your Private Key on the paper,
- or make a photo of your Private Key via offline camera (not smartphone).

There is no better way to say it that when you lost or misplaced your private key, your account is lost especially with myetherwallet cause you are absolutely in control of the account. As good as this wallet is with privacy if you lose it via your private key either to any one or missing, then the wallet is gone. Open another and keep your lesson learnt

Title: Re: MyEtherWallet Password

MyEtherWallet.com (MEW) is just an interface to interact with the Ethereum protocol.  When you create a new Ethereum wallet, MEW asks you for a password and then prompts you to save your "UTC / Json" file.  This file contains your private key, but the key is encrypted with your password.  If you have this file and the password, you can recover all the funds in your wallet with 100% certainty.

If you have this file and you have one or more guesses as to what your password might be, then you can attempt to brute force decrypt your password.

So, you need to do three things:
1. You need to search your computer for your Json file.  If you find it, move on to step #2.
2. You need to develop a list of the passwords you might have used.
3. You need to test variations of those passwords against the Json file.

This article (https://cryptoassetrecovery.com/2018/02/09/how-to-recover-your-lost-myetherwallet-mew-password/ (https://cryptoassetrecovery.com/2018/02/09/how-to-recover-your-lost-myetherwallet-mew-password/)) will walk you through each of those three items, step-by-step, including screenshots from MEW and a systematic method for identifying potential password guesses.

Thanks,
Chris

Forgetting your password will not harm you, though you lose 1 security of your account. you can still access your account with your private key and be sure not to forget that one or delete it. you only need the password if you are using the image files, but if there's no chance of having your password remember just choose to access myetherwallet with your private key. well that more important though so never lose, forget or share it. e careful now.

This is one disadvantage of using MEW, there is no option to recover our forget password but if you have your private key with you then you can access your wallet. But they must give the option to reset our password. while using your private key to log in your account use the secured system. If you lost your private key then nobody can help you.

I don't think there's another way to recover our MEW account or private key that's why we need to keep it into a secure place.
I wrote down my private key on a piece of paper and keep it on a place that only me could find, and if someone found it, they had no idea what's it for.
losing wallet private keys will result into disaster because there's no way we could access our wallet account without private keys.

Losing our wallet private keys means losing your whole coins inside that wallet because we couldn't access our wallet without private keys and the only way we can do is to find it whatever the cost.
recently, there's a guy who keep on digging a garbage hill of the town because he want to retrieve his hard drive where his bitcoin wallet account was stored.

You can't recover the password . MEW doesn't have this option . So please save JSON File + Password , moreover you can use the private key to login in MEW . If you want to be safer , then you can use MEW Offline

The fact that MEW doesn't have privkey recover option is a good thing, it's a one of many proof that they dont save up your private key to their database.
Just other time, try to be careful to safe your private key into some place that can be easily found but not easily stolen. it's a way for beginner to save their coins safely.

You should have read that my ether wallet is only an interface, they do not store your password so you are not going to see a "forgot your password" button where you can retrieve that information, the real question is why didn't you write that information? Because by what you state you do not imply that you write your password down, and that is a huge mistake, I know that there are many sites that recommend never to write your passwords but this is precisely the reason why you write them down because the human memory is not perfect and sometimes you forget, so in conclusion I'm sorry to say that unless you remember your password you have lost your coins.

This is the key point, MyEtherwallet is not an online wallet like blockchain.info where you can log in with an email and a password. Myetherwallet ask you for a password only to encrypt/decrypt your private key. The json file you download after you create the wallet is the encrypted private key, when you access myetherwallet with your json file you need to enter the password to decrypt the private key and access your ethers/tokens. Anyway, when you create a wallet, you have the option to write down your private key too. You can access myetherwallet with your private key without needing the password.

If what you mean is you forgot or misplace your private key, the only choice you have is to open your MyEtherWallet using JSON file. Make sure you recall the password that you use when you create your account. IF JSON file password is the one you misplace, you can open your MyEtherWallet using private key.

Password? You can actually open your mew with your private key if you forgot the json file password, un crypto you have full control of your money so there will be no forget password button as they don't store people's password. If you don't have the private key and the json file then you lose access to your account forever.

Yes, if you forgot your private key you cannot get back your account. For this situation, you need to make another one and for you to remember it, you can save it in a private document so that if you forgot again you can recover it easily. Be careful for the next time because you lost coin and it's a big regret for you. All your assets will be gone if you forgot it, ether wallet is very important specially in joining bounty campaigns. They require you to have a ether wallet. Therefore , If you lose or forgot your private key, there is no way to retrieve it.

Of course, if you do not have either a private key or a file, then it's very bad you can already say goodbye to your wallet. I hope there was not a large amount. If the password could be restored, then the theft of addresses would not be uncommon. Create a new wallet, use different ways of storing your passwords on different sources: print on paper, start a separate flash drive, etc. Best wishes to you

If you're creating it for the first time in MEW, you probably need to be worried because there's a high probability that you won't find it back.

If it is not the private key you are talking about then you are ok. Keep your private key safe, write it in a paper don't store it in PC. As long as you have your private key, you can open your wallet anytime. Just don't know what those password for.

Do you know or have you save your private key ? Instead of opening your myetherwallet using password you can also use your private key in opening but I am telling you to be very careful when you're going to input your private key. Why ? There are lot of phishing sites that may get your key. If thay happened they can open your account and transfer all your tokens.

If you mean something you can access your wallet with, then  I think you are referring to your private key, or any of the hardware if that's what you used. Your private key was given to you when you first signed up, and it was advised you keep safe, but somewhere you could easily get access to it. If you can't find it now, then I'm sorry, I don't there's any other way you can access your wallet, cos it cannot be recovered.

2) Private key is an important back up and

Use your password only for Keystone to access your wallet. If you forget it, it's okay. You still have Private Key to log into your wallet.
There are 2 ways to log into your wallet, so do not worry. Or you can create a new wallet to be more secure.

There are many ways to get your wallet back in. You need your private Key. according to the most important thing in wallet creation. if the private Key you lost it difficult to return your wallet. Now is your great lesson for yourself so do not forget your password.

That password encrypts the Keystore / UTC file and is used to unencrypt it to reveal your private key. So, you'll need either your private key (unencrypted - which you should have printed) OR the combo of both that password AND the Keystore / UTC file.

I'm learning myself, so if this is incorrect, I'm sure others will set us straight.

When you created your address via MEW (I presume) it gave you a JSON file. This file has your private key encrypted with your password. This is so if you leave your json file on your pc and it gets stolen. The thief needs to brute force the password. It is a way to reduce risk of the clear text private key being discovered.

The password you enter when creating your account on MyLetterWalk does not have any effect. To log into your MEW, you need a private key to gain access to the wallet. If you lose the private key, I'll have to tell you that you will not be able to access your wallet and there is no way to retrieve it.

You probably cannot retrieve your account in myetherwallet because the there was no option that tells to retrieve your account hence it is the owners fault because you've forgot to save the private key and it was very important because the security of myehterwallet is great and they did not believe you even if you lose your private key because now a days there is a lot of scammer so it may be one of the reason that they not may entertain you. I'm afraid you probably can not be helped anymore, unless of course you saved the private access key that is issued when you register your wallet. Perhaps, of course, I'm mistaken, because I'm not an expert in MEW. But I think you should try to write in support.
When you make a new wallet the primary to be saved to have an access in a wallet is the password or the private key make sure you keep it safe for the security and to prevent the hack.

No there is not any chance to recover your password. You can access your account if you have private key now. Myetherwallet never hold your password or your private key. That means in case you loss your password or private key you lose your account forever. If you have private key, I like to suggest create a new account and write your private key and password on hard paper. Then transfer you all token from old wallet to new wallet. If you don't have access of your old account than just forget about your fund. One thing you can try, you can try your all password that you using on there wallet or website. Try to remember. If match than you are lucky. For future not only Myetherwallet , write your all wallet password on safe place like hard paper. So if you forgot password it will help you. Best of luck.

When you created the wallet, did you download the keystore? Did you save your private key? I think it is very crucial to save our private key securely. If you lost your private key it mean bye bye to your account. There be nothing you can do anymore if you lost all of your private key or json file. That why before you create myetherewallet you need to write down or save your json file at a very safed place. Because nobody can recover it back.

What do you mean? Is that keystore/JSON file password? If it is, you can still access your wallet by clicking import private key, Find your json file and click it there's private key inside to your json file then copy the private key and paste it to the myetherwallet.

Being engaged into crypto investment, we should always put in mind that everything we do is very crucial since we know that crypto investment is very risky. If we add it with our carelessness, then we are just making it more risky. I don't really know if there is a way of retrieving it other than your UTC backup. I just hope that your wallet has no assets in there.

Password doesn't matter for access Myetherwallet. You can access more two ways JSON file and others way is Private key.
Please check your storage and find out one of these (JSON file/private key).
If you able to find that, then possible to access your wallet. Otherwise it is not possible to recover your myetherwallet. Always keep safe every important things in safe place.

If you mean password for login then you will need to consider contacting you’re service provider if there is no option for resetting your password. But if what you’re referring to is private keys, then there is no need to bother, cause once you lose a private key it’s gone and there is no way you can retrieve that back. But as for password, you can be able to reset your password once you forget it.

This is a common problem on those newbies that been joining this technology without a proper orientation. They should consider their password or private keys as their partner's in life.

There is nothing like forget password on MyEtherWallet because the the whole process is decentralized, MyEther wallet uses the ERC20 smart contract decentralized facilities for its operations, what you needed to protect here is your private key which is an important of their security, if you loose your private key, there would no way to recover it. You do not need a password to use your myetherwallet etherum account
all you need is your private keys, did you keep them ?

If yes, log on  to imtoken app and use your account

if no, forget about the account, its gone forever

I think you have to be more diligent in reading the warnings on the MyEtherWallet portal, because it has been explained that you have to secure your private key, or you can also secure the json file + password for first layer security.

if you lose the private key, then use json file to log in
if you do not have a private key and json file, your wallet is forfeited and cannot be recovered. next time, if you make a new wallet, please be careful. Check all the important things that you can use to access your wallet and store in a safe place

Therefore, the storage of secret keys must be treated very carefully. Here mistakes are not forgiven. If you have lost your secret key (it is impossible to forget it, because it includes too many numbers and letters and no one can remember it), this means you will lose access to your MyEtherWallet wallet forever.

There is nothing like forget password on MyEtherWallet because the the whole process is decentralized, MyEther wallet uses the ERC20 smart contract decentralized facilities for its operations, what you needed to protect here is your private key which is an important of their security, if you loose your private key, there would no way to recover it. Thanks
It's nonsense to think myetherwallet is a smart contract.
MEW is a completely client-side wallet. Nothing is stored on MyEtherWallet servers! This means you hold your data, private key, keystore files.
If you lost password from keystore file, only bruteforce attack can help.

You dont need to your mew password. They only want that password from you to create their priv key i think. Your private key is the most important thing for you. Also while opening new ethereum wallet you have to download json file. and you can use your wallet with that file or with your private key. I hope it make sense.

The way MEW  operate is quite different from other wallets, with regards to the fact that you can access your account with your private key and unfortunately once you loose your private key, you won't be able to access your account again. Look through your computer carefully, if it is saved on it.

If you lost your password then there is no helping you. MEW doesn't have a forgot password feature and I think same thing applies on other platforms when creating a new wallet. That is why I always store my private key and password because there is no way of retrieving it even if you contact the team or technical support of the wallet.

You can't changed the password of MEW the only solution for that is to create new one and start again. If you still have your UTC file you can open it again remember when you create MEW account you have to download UTC file before you can get private key.
In fact, if the user loses the password, then it is so scary to me, even if the attacker finds it out. The main thing is that the secret key and the file key must be kept from prying eyes.

Actually you don't need any password in  MyEtherWallet website. A password which you typed when created a wallet was used only once as a random phrase for creating a pair of address+private  key. After that you should remember only these 2 things: ETH address and private key. You don't need anything else. At any time you can get access to this your address by the private key, either on MEW website or on any other website(or app, software, etc.)  which supports  ETH wallets.

Did you mean 'private key' when said 'password' (may be)? In this case your wallet is lost forever, nobody can restore the private key. Just stop to send ETH&tokens to that address and create a new one.

I suggest to those have people have wallet tk myetherwallet better to secure your private key you need to save it to place safe like have password and not only 1 better to save to other documents incase they have problem you can access because you have other option .

You should've placed it somewhere SAFE and DON'T lose it, and you can't even blame MEW for this since they have never even lacked on REMINDING us to always save our private keys somewhere safe, they even offer you more secured methods on opening your wallet and not even only on accessing private keys, and that is why you should never FORGET your private key since MEW will not save you for losing it, better luck next time dude.

Yes, it better to create another new account but I will advice the use of Metamask and others secure services but the act of saving password on a flash drives is also vulnerable either because anything can happen to the flash and I will advice you to keep save one of the flash in safety deposit box while you code some part of the password so you'll be the only one to understand what the codes mean or else you may still loose your coins.

There is no need to reset password and Myetherwallet don't need password to unlock. You can unlock your wallet by your private key by clicking "Send Ether and Tokens" button on the upper of the Myetherwallet.
The person who created the topic is because of the fact that he lost the private key and forgot the password. So anything he does will be a waste of time.

If you forgot your password, that's fine as long as you keep your private key.  Because among those two between password and private key is much more important than to it. if you remember the time you created an address on your MEW there is a password creation then you need to download the key file and next was private key which is you need to save and keep it, right?

When you access MEW with the Json file, you are prompted for the password you entered when creating the wallet. I prefer private key or metamask.
For me it is more easy way

If you mean that you have lost your private key from the wallet, then no way to restore access to your money no longer exists, because a private key is the only thing that can give you the ability to manage your money and if you lost it - this means that you are have no more any way to get your money back.

When you created your wallet using mew you should save your password for keystore file and private key. Without password you can't access the keystore file. But if you saved your private key everything is good, then.

There is no password, only the private key used to access Mew You. if you don't have or reserve it, it won't return your account. when you make mew, the preset is reserved first by writing the private key in the notebook

If you forget your password, you will not be able to enter your wallet. They don't have the "forgot password"feature. I'll say, or remember, or just forget about the coins you had in that purse.

This is more reason one needs to be very careful with every security details, because they are very essential.
I can't imagine someone who has huge amount of portfolio and now looses the security details of the wallet. Which means it is gone and cannot be access again.
Apart from the issue of not saving the security details, it should be saved on two different places: in a note and on flash drive.

You can't changed the password of MEW the only solution for that is to create new one and start again. If you still have your UTC file you can open it again remember when you create MEW account you have to download UTC file before you can get private key.

You do not need the password to the wallet as long as you have the private keys to the wallet, if you do not have those then you are going to have to get another wallet with new passwords which would mean that if you had any coins in the previous wallet then they are all gone and you are going to have to get new coins, which is bad

You should have kept your private key. You can't recover password with your private key everything in your waller are accessible, i hope the value of what is stored in the wallet is not much.

If you are using myetherwallet, your need to use password will be nil! You really do not need password to unlock your wallet with mew since your coin is not saved on any server, mew only give you access to interact with  ethereum blockchain, your password is onpy needed to rap your private key of which you can decide not yo use password!
I use the password and keystore file. I believe that this method is the safest because no one can get my file. even if someone knows my password, he will not be able to enter the wallet without a file

The most popular way to access to your Ethereum wallet through MyEtherWallet is using your private key, so if you forgot it and you do not have the other methods of access, it seems like you have lost your wallet.

There is no password.

When you created wallet on Myetherwallet you got your keys, you probably save them to your PC.
Because you have used them at least once to check your balance?

So the question you must ask yourself did you ever opened your wallet after initial creation, if not there is a good chance that you never downloaded your keys in the first place.

you are giving wrong information. depending on how the account holder want to access MEW. if he is using keystore, He will need to further input the password which he has set for the account and this is what he is asking for here. i do not think you can retrieve your password but if you know the private key you can explore other options

the keystore is very safe but you should kept your private key to explore other options. your account is encrypted so you need password which you have set. probably you need to continuing try guessing your password

Sorry bro, unfortunately you lose to access your wallet unless you remember your private key or json file password. Next time, be more careful and don't forget to take notes. This is crypto.

If you forget your password which you use after downloading JSOn* file, it is not a proble, You can use your private key in order to log in without JSOn* file and password. Good luck, be more attentive.
