Title: Safebit Bitcoin Wallet - Bitcoin Evolved [UPDATE!!!]
Post by: Eli on July 15, 2011, 06:23:37 PM

UPDATE

The project is starting to grow bit-by-bit and it needs to be updated here, I'll try to keep the forum up to speed, but for your daily fix on this project, head to one of the links below where I update on development progress and try to share as much as I can.

I have to admit seeing donations coming in while working on the bitcoin wallet is awesome! And it makes me wish that I could work on this project 24/7, thanks to everyone pitching in!

Important stuff:
Address for donations: 1Cm554iqhU9dLnZsi2LA5s1b576DdfM1GM
Bitcoin Time Capsule donations address: 1Hhvei8iQabcb4Jqap78XmPG79YS3mAuE8 *See below

Bitcoin Time Capsule BTC Donations
Because this client is primarily developed to bring in lay people to Bitcoin I've came up with this idea of Time Capsule Donations; 50% of every donation above 1Ƀ will not be used in the project, but rather saved in a safe place until the client is officially released, and the collected bounty Bitcoin will be given away to one of two options: random users who download the app, or if you provide an email address of someone you would like to receive that 50% it will be used as an invitation email, and I will forward the bounty to your chosen user. No matter how much Bitcoin will be worth by then, so you can donate right now 1Ƀ worth $14.5 (at the time of writing these lines), and by the time the client released, you could be giving someone you care about a lot more than just $7.25 worth of bitcoins (one half of the total donation).

For those time capsule donations that are not assigned an email address random people will be getting $10 worth of Bitcoins when the client is released until all the bounty is released to the public.

Please make sure to send me an email before making the donation to the time capsule with the address you will be using to send the coins. Use coderrr's bitcoin wallet to do so: http://coderrr.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/patching-the-bitcoin-client-to-make-it-more-anonymous/

An example of an integrated exchange. Safebit is looking for investments, contact me for details.

Some info about the progress and future of the project regarding privacy and costs: Safebit (codename for the project, most likely will be changed latter on) is an open-source project. It doesn't mean it's under a do-what-ever-you-want-with-the-code license, and currently it's under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/) license - this license may change in the future. Eventually the client may be available under multiple licenses, for the time being I prefer to make sure I'm navigating it to the right direction.
In any case Safebit will not be ever used to spy on users or their spending behaviors - I consider this as a "private bank" and as such it will not transmit any data to any unauthorized source. That being said the client may ask users to help improving it by providing anonymous usage statistics and will be used only to improve the quality of the client and will not be sold or given away to any 3rd parties.

Safebit is more than just a Bitcoin Wallet
Some of you may already know that, but I have a lot of plans for Safebit. Apart from being a good looking and an easy to use Bitcoin wallet I hope that Safebit will become a platform for anything related to Bitcoin. I'm currently looking for business partners like the Bitcoin Economy Plugin (http://www.searchbitcoin.com/) to integrate inside the app.
I once said I want to create The iPhone of Bitcoin, but this iPhone will be free and open-source so you don't have to worry if your app will be accepted inside the future market-place.

I have my own ideas on what plugins could be developed around the wallet and I'm sure you're thinking about one or two right now, or at least you should, because I really believe that this platform will bring in more users and developers to Bitcoin and will one of the growth engines of Bitcoin in the next couple of years with the most popular technologies out there today (Python, Javascript, HTML, CSS).

As always, I'm waiting to hear your comments and remarks, feel free to catch me on Google+ and by email and chat.

/UPDATE

Hello everyone, I want to introduce my new Bitcoin Wallet that I've been working on in the past couple of weeks, and hopefully find a developer or two who would like to contribute to the project.

I'll star by showing you a couple of mockups I've made last week that sprouted this project, and after that a small preview of the actual client.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1290056/Bitcoin%20Dashboard.gif
The Dashboard

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1290056/Bitcoin%20SendReceive.gif
The Send and Recieve
It's a little cluttered for now, I know, it will be fixed.

You can get more details and also why I started this client on the post in the Alternative Clients forum (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=26620.0).

I've also made a short video (http://bitco.tumblr.com/post/7656168867/first-preview-for-the-new-client) to preview the client and show some progress made so far on the project blog - bitco.tumblr.com (http://bitco.tumblr.com/) - It's just a minute long so it won't take much time :)

Please let me know what you think and what features you would like to see first.

Support the Project!
If you like my work so far, you can support it:

  • Spread the word!
Blog, Twitt, Like, Google+ and share this project any way you can!
  • Contribute to the Code! (http://code.google.com/p/elis-bitcoin-wallet/)
The project is fully open source so you can check the code and pitch in some work. Right now I deseperatly need a knowledgeable Python developer to help me out with the back-end
  • Donate!
If you'd like to see this project gets developed more quickly than you can help me fund it by donating a few coins to this address:
    1Cm554iqhU9dLnZsi2LA5s1b576DdfM1GM

I hope to get the client in working order in the next few weeks, and after that I'll start working on implementation of custom features that I or you think are needed. Basically the priority of the features I'm going to work on is going to be decided by the donations - the top donation that will be given will decide what feature(s) will be worked for the next version. Let me know what you think of this kind of milestones for the project.

I value any and all input, so feel free to pitch in any idea that you have or feature that you'd like to see.

Eli

How far along is this project? I suspect doing a graphics mockup, although requiring skill, is the easy part on top of the actual code behind it.

Totally agree... It is hard to believe that people hosts Bitcoins in Windows!  \o/

Honestly, how people are still using Windows these days?!   :P

It's more than proven that Windows is pure crap.

BTW, REALLY NICE WORK!

It's not moving as fast as I would like, but it's getting there.
I'm hoping to release a preview version (if I get some help with python) (which will not be safe for actual usage, except for some basic testing) by the end of the month.

I'm working only on the front-end part of the Bitcoin client, and relying currently on JSON-RPC communication with bitcoind. It's not optimal, but that way I'll push out the GUI as fast as I can, and let the people that know what they're doing do the back-end lifting.

Some people have to do this thing called "office work" and "financial work" and "play video games," and, sadly, Windows is pretty much still the only OS with sufficient application support for those :(

Solution: get a new office, a new financial system, and new games.  You can work from home, for bitcoins and play the abundance of free (and surprisingly good) open source games.  However, I agree this isn't practical for many.  Microsoft is well dug in among corporations.

System security is not entirely based on the OS. It's sad that people grow up and still have to be treated like they're in kindergarten with all their pillows and padding -_-.

Windows is the most popular OS out there. If you expect the average person to switch over to linux so that they can start using/accepting bitcoins, you're surely mistaken.

Than use it on OSX, or Linux, or iOS, or Android. Those OSes will be supported out of the box, with support for other platforms being part of the project core ideas.

Nice work! The official Bitcoin client looks like a command line compared to this. Shame about the license though, it would be far more useful if it could be modified.

It can be modified, just not re-distributed at this time.
I would much rather have a massive effort supporting one free and open source Bitcoin client than having a tug of war between otherwise identical clients over single features.

If the entire community would focus it's development time into one single client (up until this point) there wouldn't be a need for Safebit because most of the critical problems would have gone away, but there are dozens of clients each written in it's own unique style and language, and from those even more splinters going to each and his own ideas.

If you wish to contribute to the code it will be greatly appreciated by myself and the rest of the community, from my own experience Design by Committee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_by_committee) rarely works.

Please bare in mind that at this time Safebit is only front-facing bitcoin client, and relies heavily on the regular bitcoin client that is downloadable from www.bitcoin.org, so if you'd like to see specific feature you could also help directly to the regular bitcoind client and you would indirectly support this project as well.

I would much rather have a massive effort supporting one free and open source Bitcoin client than having a tug of war between otherwise identical clients over single features.

That's currently an ideological barrier to entry for other devs though. Putting an ND license on it goes against the spirit of github, it will prevent people from forking and submitting their pull requests.

I disagree, like you said, that would be design by committee. Diversity is important, the best front-end will win the support of the users, the best back-end will win the support of the developers. You obviously have good design skills which is something we've been calling out for, you have a clear vision of what a user-friendly client should look like. That's something that people can rally behind!

If you wish to contribute to the code it will be greatly appreciated by myself and the rest of the community, from my own experience Design by Committee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_by_committee) rarely works.
I agree, the best open source projects have a benevolent dictator running a tight meritocracy. It's your project, you've made the best looking client so far, you get to decide what goes in and what stays out, but an ND license will just encourage other people to make competing clients. I'm actually tempted, your UI is an inspiration. :)

Ok, I see what you mean. What would you recommend in my situation? Although I wish this project to remain open-source, I am nonetheless interested in making money off of it, and by allowing people to redistribute it would basically mean that anyone can use the code/design of Safebit and rebrand it as they see fit, and I find it a bit discomforting.

My understanding of open-source licenses is very limited, and I don't have the time to research those right now, and paying a lawyer to do it is out of the question (I'm running on fumes in regards of funding :) ).

With that being said, I'm all ears to other licenses and ideas that will allow devs to do whatever they feel like, but without the "problem" of using the code/design under a different name/management.

Yeah, that's the main problem. If you want to make money from the project then you'll be lucky to find other devs to contribute for free

This looks really nice  ;D. I haven't managed to get it working yet on my computer but I think this may be because my blocks are pretty out of date.

I'm interested in the code but I'm not sure where to start looking. Which parts have you written and which are part of other libraries (eg. I see web.py and python-bitcoin)?

I could potentially help out with some of the code. I know python pretty well and can help with Linux integration and packaging. In fact I have my own Bitcoin related project 'Wallet Manager' (it enables encryption and backup of wallets) which could be better off as a plugin or integrated feature of this app.

Unfortunately the licences of our programs are incompatible and I only like to code for free software (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html) which your program isn't because of the nc and nd flags.  :-\ I think changing the licence to something free would help to get more contributors. Personally I'd recommend the AGPL 3 since your app is basically a web app but anything from the WTFPL to the AGPL is fine IMO.

I'm not saying I wouldn't help out under the current licence but I don't code for free unless the software is free.

New Icon for Safebit!

Thanks to Zanimanski Valery (http://www.lovicons.com/) who was kind enough to create an icon for the application based on my request.
Check out his Dribbble profile (http://dribbble.com/Lovicons)

This is one sexy icon, and it looks great even on the smallest scale (16x16).

Props for the awesome work Valery!

Is it just a teaser, or do you have plans to embed http://spendbitcoins.com/ (http://spendbitcoins.com/) payment process into Safebit? My question is how do you plan to make it possible to pay with bitcoins on Amazon?

I have the technical plans laid out in my head, but the above is more of a vision, but on getting the "Pay with Bitcoin" button on Amazon.com is something that will require more widespread use of Bitcoins besides the technicalities that revolve around it.

It can be modified, just not re-distributed at this time.
I would much rather have a massive effort supporting one free and open source Bitcoin client than having a tug of war between otherwise identical clients over single features.

How is it open-source if it has re-distribution copyright limitations?

You can make money if you maintain a widely used version through things such as paid support and sponsors such as embedding amazon shopping features (As you appear to show) into the program for some commission or fixed deal.

I don't know how you plan to make money though.

Open-Source means that the source is open for everyone to view and review, it doesn't necessarily means that you can do whatever you want with the source (i.e. use it under a different brand and say that you've made the product).

You can make money if you maintain a widely used version through things such as paid support and sponsors such as embedding amazon shopping features (As you appear to show) into the program for some commission or fixed deal.

I don't know how you plan to make money though.

Like you've already concluded, Safebit will generate profits using surrounding services, like the Smart address book, Secure Store for your wallet file, secure offsite backup, and other services that I'm still developing in my head.

You can check out a small presentation I'm working on for potential investors over here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34175.0

The thing I want most of all in all the whole wide world is a way of managing multiple wallets and distributing funds between them.
Having to keep track of multiple wallets is a nightmare using the official client. I'm sick of renaming wallet.dat files and then trying to work out which wallet has what funds.
I want 99 encrypted wallets and 1 unencrypted with my money distributed throughout them all. I'm happy to wait 1/2 an hour for the wallets to be generated.

You can see that in the initial mock-ups there is a small line that shows which wallet file you're using.

This feature, of managing more than one wallet, is something that I too think is essential in a Bitcoin wallet, and it's going to be baked in to the client from the get-go, so you're in luck :)

By the way, why the unecrypted wallet? for day-to-day use?

Am I missing something or is there a way to compile this and test it out on Linux?  Currently testing bitcoin-qt.  Missing instruction on how to test this beautiful app.

When will there be a version to test (Mac or Win)?

Thanks.

Looks great by the way!

Basically you could run this on Mac or Linux right now.

That being said, I wouldn't recommend anyone to start using it in any form at this time, it's in early stages of development, and bad things can happen to your coins if something goes wrong...

Hey, Eli. "The Phin" (seems like this guy changes his name weekly) here.

I've commissioned my brother-in-law to fashion a physical hand tooled leather wallet based on your images at http://bitco.tumblr.com/. It should be ready by the end of next week, whereupon I'll showcase it here on this forum.

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQPDxA9L07_M22-LtUgucnPnpg1knHuOFvS3-aww_BZ3sRrmJ47bw

I'm having him go with the currency symbol B as shown, unless members here want otherwise. The first wallet will, of course, be a simple prototype. But trust me, it can be as elaborate as you wish it to be, bearing in mind that it would increase the price. As an example, he develop his own lacing technique that's killer (but probably won't be included on the prototype wallet).

His qualifications include: tooling three seats for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith; a commissioned project for Jesse James; a seat for a special built for the USO, signed by Jay Leno, then auctioned off for charity; a hockey themed seat for a bike first seen by the public when rolled onto the NHL ice arena; and a myriad more works of art. His old school hand tooled leather seats and accessories have been shipped to every continent (with the exception of the one with all that ice) as well as to the major archipelago island nations. He's been featured in over a dozen motorcycle magazines, as well.

You may post that he's a bit overqualified to fashion a physical Bitcoin themed wallet, but don't bother. He's been commissioned to tool many wallets, purses, saddlebags, gun and rifle holsters, etc. Although I'm not at liberty to offer up his name, as of yet (for he's to much of a rebel to be associated with Bitcoin), you can view his handiwork if you image search, on Google, the phrase (without quotation marks) hand tooled leather seats (his art work is on the very FIRST PAGE). http://www.google.com/search?q=hand+tooled+leather+seats&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=685#um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=hand+tooled+leather+seats&oq=hand+tooled+leather+seats&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=0l0l0l175321l0l0l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=b25f5f7e794d3a65&biw=1280&bih=685

If anybody's in the process of a Bitcoin themed custom built bike, consider my B-I-L for the tooled leather works.

Not sure what you mean by that, is it aimed at me? That's the only name I've used on this forum.

I have an ear-to-ear grin right now, this is just so awesome as an idea! :)

Here's the highest resolution image that I have of the wallet:

That is awesome. Make sure you get it as vector image - modern windows versions use a vector based UI unless the developer insists on using outdated UI technology ;) Not for the icons, but for everything else you want to have the XAML based representation so it can be easily scaled.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. "The Phin" joke was making fun of myself. On a couple of other post, I've used Bruno which truly is my real name.

Thanks for the blow-up. I read in the next post that a member wants to make sure there's a credit card holder (I think he meant to say a Bitcoin Card holder). There will be. I was in my brother-in-law's studio last night hashing out some of the details.

Seeing that there's a little traction, I may start a thread on this, but it won't be till later today, for I'll be busy loading 5,000 BF of barn lumber for a client.

The other most popular symbol for Bitcoin is the Thai Baht symbol ฿.  He could make both versions.

It's not really open source in the normal sense of open source software unless you allow modification and re-distribution. The additional services can still be provided if people were to modify the software, right? And if people wanted to sue your additional services they'd use your version. I see no reason why you can't make this modifiable.

The additional services can still be provided if people were to modify the software, right? And if people wanted to sue your additional services they'd use your version. I see no reason why you can't make this modifiable.

From Wikipedia.org (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source):
Quote
The term open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials.

It saddens me to see that people demand more when already given a lot.
Safebit is open-source so that people could validate that the code that powers the client is not harming them in any way. The reason that at this moment the license does not allow redistribution of the code is because I'm devoting a 6-8 hours a day on top of my regular day job in this project, and I don't have the resources or the manpower to launch this project properly before it is ready.
If the license would allow redistribution than someone else could use the code and invest the funds and resources that I cannot at the moment, and simply build a product out of something that I have started and trying to make a living off.

Open Source means only one thing - that the source is open for review and to play around, it doesn't mean that I should or must allow anyone to do what ever they want with it.

The other major reason why I don't think this project should have distribution rights to anyone but the main developers is the issue of fragmentation of software. I'm strongly against the notion of design-by-committee which in my eyes hurts the project in both the short and long terms.

The Safebit project is and will always remain open-source and free to use, if you really want to contribute to the project, and what you want is to make this project work, you can right now, without redistributing it. The only problem that people tell me about the license is that they can't create a new project using this code, and this is exactly what the license prevents.

I see no reason why you can't make this modifiable.

I'll say it again: You can modify it anyway you like, the only thing you can't do is post the code or your modified code under a different name or distribute it any other way than the main distribution channel for the project.

Join the dev team. Developers interested in contributing to the project will get pushing rights to the original repository.

If you are interested send me your github username and I'll add you to the project.

Nice UI. but it's intrinsically insecure to use bitcoin on windows.

It's intrinsically insecure to be an idiot.

It's intrinsically idiotic to be insecure. (turnabout is fair play) I couldn't help myself from butting in this game of word play.

It's the changelog of the Python Web.py package. Not really relevant to the project, it's being used to serve the files on a local computer.

This is EXACTLY what bitcoin needs.  Odds are that you have already thought of this, but is not.  One feature that I would like to see is the ability to send them money and have it atomically convert it into BTC.
So say if I wanted to donate 5 dollars to the project.  Instead of calculating how many coins it would take, all I have to do is send you 5 dollars and the client would do the convertion.

The screenshots of this client look great.  Others have said this before, but bitcoin could very well go the way of bittorrent - the creator of bittorent had his own simplistic/primitive client software, but people made prettier and more functional ones built around the same protocol and those are the clients everyone uses nowadays.

Hey, this project looks great. I see you already thought about plugins, so I guess every vendor or exchanger can expand it so you can have automagic currency exchange and even in-app buying (for example, I would love an implementation for SpendBitcoins.com).

Did you think also of supporting multiple real and crypto currencies? With the appropriate plugins, one could have available a number of Bitcoins (local stored or in various exchanges and e-wallets), *coins (like Namecoin, which might also come with a plugin that will enable domain administration) and even plugs into other online currencies like LibertyReserve and so on. And exchanges for all that on top.

That would make Safebit (let's not call it Safebit Bitcoin Wallet, but Safebit Digital Waller or just Safebit Wallet) a sigle point of command to all the various digital currencies that one has in different places.

I'm not a developer, but I'm game for testing it on Linux and Android, and also for anything web-based (it would be cool if one could access the wallet from remote).

Edit: Just tried out the current client, and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen! It would be a shame to let this die! Would anyone like to help me revive it, and finish it? I'm going to go fork it on github.

I am pretty sure Eli is working on it still in 'stealth' mode.

If you sign up for his tweets he has been tweeting about all sorts of things over the last few months like the best JS libraries to use, best practice internationalisation, all sorts of dev related things.

I watch his couple of projects in github but he is not committing to those but I am pretty sure the code is being written somewhere !
Looking forward to seeing it when it appears.

No movement in 9 months, according to GitHub - https://github.com/elis/bitcoin-wallet

Anyone have any info on this ?

I currently have it installed in Chrome and it seems to run quite well for basic operations, although I remove my credentials before I close it when I use it....lol
It's the stigma of it being listed as 'Alpha' even though there's probably nothing wrong with it and can go into production yesterday....

Hopefully this project continues.
