When you say 'Silkroad' you mean the game itself? Oo

if any of you watch the TV show "white collar" you may find some similarities to the silk road news lately..

although they call it "grey trade" they did manage to poke at silk road by saying the words in a conversation starting 11minutes 30 seconds.. which was a funny pun.

but it looks like the TV producers are keeping up to date on current events

white collar season 5 episode 2

I'm pleasantly surprised with the rally after the shutdown.  It really chops the "Bitcoin is only for drugs" crowd off at the knees.

yes, I totally agree, if anything this shows that bitcoin is way more than just some way to pay for drugs

The fact that bitcoin survived the downfall of SR and came out strong really says something

Actually the only reason BTC went down after that was emotion.  Silk Road's effect on the price was like a fly on windshield - zero.
BUT I will say that other more organized and nefarious groups, like those often associated in movies with Italian heritage, could be keeping more in BTC than anyone cares to imagine.  But they don't build websites and attract attention of the public. IMHO

That's actually a really good point that I hadn't considered.

Well, we'll know if the Zetas get involved in Bitcoin, because of the sudden epidemic of a mysterious illness that causes the head to separate from the body.

It is very interesting to begin with and surely things would get better if not worst when talking about sites that are illegal in sovereign states but otherwise traded in btc.

If I was on the dark-side I would definitely store and move money in BTC.  So much easier than fiat from whatever country.
I actually thought that was one of the theorized reasons for the spike in BTC ($250 at one point) during the Cyprus banking crisis.  Cyrpus banks have long been a parking spot for Russian Mob money due to their poor oversight.  One of the potential solutions to the crisis was the government was going to seize a percentage of everyone's account to bail out the banks.  When that was announced BTC soared.  If I recall properly.  That was the Mob moving their funds to BTC instead of getting a percentage seized.
Someone is probably more up on the details than me though.

Good video. Agreed Bitcoin will continue and thrive without silk road. As many people have pointed out, there is an actual real economy behind bitcoin, with real businesses.

Now that the Silk Road is gone, Bitcoin is a viable Christmas present. You can get them for your kids, and they can spend them anywhere on the internet. But not to buy crack :)

And it's the gift card where "If you by it now, it will probably be worth more by Christmas" how many other giftcards can say that?

Spread the word

I bet cartel and gang involvement is why the government is so scared. They are always looking for ways to make money, and the SR made it more appealing.

I'm sure they've been using coins from the beginning.

Thanks for all the positive comments and yes I agree I think with the Silkroad going away the PR of Bitcoin has improved and is starting to take shape as a honest useful payment system :)

The government is probably gonna use the coins to destroy bitcoin by selling them all at once. That will lower the price a "lot"

you do realize that there are many other markets that are just as active as what sr was?

and sr 2.0 launched on the 6th this month..

The general point being how insignificant the takedown of SR was to the value of BTC.
While it is/was a big news story, it was not a big BTC financial event.

It's not the fact that Silkroad is gone.  It's that there was zero impact to Bitcoin when it was gone.  Once bigger organizations saw that, they started taking Bitcoin as a new currency.

That certainly put the lie to the idea that "Bitcoin isn't for anything but buying drugs and illegal porn."  Shutting down the two largest sources of that barely touched the price.

The closure of SR was actually a very beneficial thing for Bitcoin. The less illegal stuff the better.

No, that's probably because the void left by SR was quickly filled by SMP and BMR, it's mostly business as usual in terms of the "illegal stuff" market.
