Adding ERC20 Support to Coinbase

We’re excited to announce our intention to support the Ethereum ERC20 technical standard for Coinbase in the coming months. This paves the way for supporting ERC20 assets across Coinbase products in the future, though we aren’t announcing support for any specific assets or features at this time. We are announcing this both internally and to the public as consistent with our process for adding new assets.

ERC20 is a technical standard used for Ethereum smart contracts. ERC20 assets have become a popular way for teams to quickly build interoperable contracts/assets. More recently, our Ethereum wallet and Dapp browser Toshi added native support for ERC20.

What ERC20 support means for our products

Coinbase Custody — the Custody team is evaluating a set of assets to support for deposits and withdrawals. Note: Custody will likely support more assets than those available to trade on GDAX or Coinbase for the foreseeable future.

GDAX — the GDAX team will wait for additional regulatory clarity before we decide which ERC20 assets to support on GDAX. Support for ERC20 will also give us a path to enabling the safe recovery of customer ERC20 assets inadvertently sent to GDAX Ethereum addresses.

Coinbase Asset Management — per the index methodology, any asset listed on GDAX will be added to the Coinbase Index on a market capitalization weighted basis.

Coinbase — per our previous guidance, Coinbase will only list assets after they are listed on GDAX. After evaluating factors such as liquidity, price stability, and other market health metrics, we may choose to add any ERC20 asset added to GDAX to the Coinbase platform. It’s also worth repeating that GDAX will likely have more assets listed on the platform than the Coinbase platform, i.e. listing on GDAX does not guarantee listing on Coinbase.

Additionally, like GDAX, support for ERC20 will also give us a path to enabling the safe recovery customer ERC20 assets inadvertently sent to Coinbase Ethereum addresses.

Coinbase Commerce — no planned ERC20 support at this time.

The day CoinBase start adding Erc20 tokens then we can expect new price hike for Etherum based smart contract tokens and market expansion will be huge

Once it says like rumours spreading on the forum and elsewhere but today it shows that it is the truth in the marketplace value. I would like to use the coinbase exchange but they do not have the option to use for my country.
Actually today coinbase confirms that they will having the option to utilise the ERC 20 tokens on their exchange. It will be work perfectly.

Very big exchange, this is a great news and will see etheruem to the moon very soon. It will also contribute to the growth of existing ERC enabled coin. The trading volume for coinbase will also increase.

It's been 2 months already since they announced about their intention, but we haven't heard anything from them about the progress. Since there's no ETA, we can't expect and just patiently wait. I guess they will make an update/announcement when it's already done.

does it mean it will also support those scammy coins that airdrops and campaign bounty gave? this will be great for someone to liquidate those shitty coins.

This is a good news for ERC-20 assets. This is crypto Getting to a new hight once this is implemented.

Far from whether this news is real or not, this will represent more support for ICOs and shit-coins, and it shows the interest of coin by collecting money rather than providing excellent service to customers away from all this pumping for a number of no use cryptocurrency.
I hope that a market regulation will happen to finish all this nonsense

Yup they didn't gave an specific time when they will start accepting ERC20 tokens.

I think that coinbase doesn't support most of the ICOs and they are only going to accept those coins that they filtered and agreed upon their entire management.

This announcement from coinbase's blog has been also abused and being used by some coins to hype themselves.

You do not need to worry about it mate. This news real one bro, I am the user of coinbase wallet for long time and got the email from the team states they gonna accept the ERC20 as a asset in their exchanges bro.
Simply ignore the fake news all the time but this one trustable news only so do not think regulations will work better here.

I dont think they would easily accept those tokens even they are erc20 tokens to be put up on the site itself.There would really be always a criteria for sure for them to be followed since we do know coinbase when it comes to regulations and laws they are following it up. Im sure they are really fully aware into those shit erc20 tokens in the market. This is a real news i dont know why some people do said its a fake one.

I also hope we won't start seeing the very shit coins flying here and there since coinbase will be listing them. Proper regulation and scrutiny should be put in place.

etherdelta already lists the rubbish tokens that nobody wants. Do not see point of coinbase listing them.

Yeah. At least, this is going to give some ERC20 tokens to have a wider space to evolve in the current market with the way things are going.

With coinbase listing some of them, I believe it would sprout some growth for the ERC20 market and even for Ethereum as well. This gives room for some coinbase users and probably US based investors to have access into buying some of those tokens, and knowing that coinbase will actually be picky with the tokens they are going to be listing based on US regulations, we may actually see any token listed to get some good growth.

But coinbase is not available in all the countries so it doesn't make any significant growth in the ERC20 market but if they can extent their exchange to the all countries then it maybe very good for the people who related to the crypto currency because in coinbase exchange we can trade the crypto currencies easily.

The volume of trading in Coinbase is huge so expect for the price of eth to soar high though Coinbase is not available in some country and also maybe only good ERC20 token can be listed there so lucky to those coins who are able to passed the requirements

Oh well, usually exchanges announced some innovation without any ETA so I'm not surprised at all. I still remember other exchanges saying that they are going to batch withdrawals to ease the network clogged as we all know that they are one of the major reasons what bitcoin's network is heavily traffic, however, the network spammer stop, so I don't know if indeed exchanges are doing batching already. I don't know if this is a good moved by Coinbase because there are other platforms who are already listing shitcoins so I don't know what motivates to do such move.

they will add it as it has become necessity of crypto exchange to add erc 20 token to attract trader or they will switch to other exchange but still majority of trade are done in btc and eth so ,they are not in hurry to add it.there should be a competitor to coinbase in US so they can speed up the process and add additional crypto and feature to the platform.

It is really going to be a top notch for the whole crypto space as we get to see some tokens with some relevance getting pushed up in value as a result of that. It is still too early to start judging how things will be turning out though, but from the look of things, since it is a US based exchange, I am very sure it is going to be affecting which token is listed at the end of the day based on how US regulation has been known to play out eventually. Let's see how this turns out for the market.

I guess the progress is coming up gradually since they have announced the revival of their exchanges and trying to revamp the exchange space for themselves so as to benefit the traders in the long run. With this, I am sure this would have been worked in a way and I believe it is just a matter of time before we started seeing this come to fruition. Also, not sure yet what their criteria of selecting tokens would be like, but I guess time will tell.

As it is presently, it looks like coinbase is really trying to set a pace in the market and trying their best to see how they can really benefit hugely from it. With the way they have been tuning up their exchanges and coming up with series of innovation to make things better, and with the news of probably adding the ERC20 tokens, even though it has been a rumor for a while looking at when OP posted this, but recently looking like a possibility, then I must say this market is turning up for a great future.

Adding ERC20 in coinbase is a good Idea because most of the project right now are base in ERC20 so if they add this many traders will use coinbase and this is good for me because I always use coinbase this is not hassle for me because most of the token that I have will store in coinbase if they add that.

yes, this could pave the way for supporting ERC-20 assets across coinbaase products in the future. but, for those who are not familiar with the term, ERC-20, this refers to a number of tokens built through the intelligent contract feature on blockchain ethereum in particular, specifically referred to as token-standard ethereum.

That’s look promising right. Been out of the country last March to June haven’t heard anything about this news from direct notification or nonetheless no email from Coinbase, literally haven’t send one. I feel neutral for now as i don’t have given much attention on its validity on MOR(my own research).

I do use Coinbase and Erc20 wallet so this announcement will surely benefit us all, more competition is better. Let’s wait and see if this would be in there application soon.

Its business by the way and all sorts of possibilities on how to extent market would definitely be done or being planned since theres no ETA being mentioned then we cant really expect on when it would be applied or implemented but the good thing that they do already extent out. We do know how US sees thru crypto. For coinbase users this would totally a positive thing for them not only but also to the market which it can surely affect but not wont too big.

Usually iam using coinbase exchange for my transaction. I heared the news two months before itself. I think it is a rummor. But now they are adding ERC20 tokens is a great news. Now many traders are using this exchange. Because most of the new projects now coming based on ERC20 tokens due to smart contract program. So the price of ethereum has a chance to increase more. Coinbase is a trust worthy exchange now adding erc20 tokens it becomes more popular in the crypto market.

Is it already they added tokens into their exchange,I didn't hear any news about that recently and Coinbase is one of the great exchange so more people will start to use this exchange for trading the tokens if they added already and alao what are the tokens were added any list?.

well coinbase is the largest exchange in the US so adding support on ERC-20 will be a huge boost for those coins, but what's the update on this news?

That’s right, it’s rather an interesting news, truly it brings us a big change and big chance to welcome so many more cryptocurrencies to this huge platform. ERC20 is the token standard of ethereum and it’s such a technical standard  used for smart contracts through Ethereum blockchain. I mostly think that many of us would be more likely to find a significant benefit fom it. Anyway, coinbase give supporting for ERC20 lead us to amazing exchange.

if indeed the coinbase will Add the support of ERC20 I think this is pretty good because of course it will increase the market back passion especially on increasing price of Ethereum which is used as smart contract from some token based on Etherum. I hope this will work well and can make it easier to exchange.

That's good news in the long term downtrend at the market.

If so it will be a very happy news for everyone because most bounty and reseller men use coinbase to hold Eth or BTC. But matter of sorrow that i heard it about 2-3 months ago that coinbase is going to support ERC-20 assets but still there is no progress in their work. I think its one kind of business policy of coinbase team.

I start to think Coinbase is funny. The companie has firstly the arrogance to use the name COINBASE but it's turning in a christmas tree with more altcoin than bitcoin solutions. I remember when they said Bitcoin is the only one good we won't consider another coin. Now they are adding a bunch if ERC20? How funny it is

In my opinion it is a technical standard used for contracting intelligently through the Ethereum series.
I mainly think that many of us will be more likely to find a more substantial benefit.
Because most of the new projects are now based on the ERC20 token by the smart contract program. Thus, the price of ethereum has a chance to increase.

This was a plan since they started.
they just want to make things slow but perfect.
in the right time they will announce it.
we can expect it sooner or later.
