Is owning money a crime? Because money facilitates the trading of such illegal things, too. If/when Bitcoin is regulated in your country of residence and you are obligated by law to declare any possession of Bitcoin but you haven't done so, then owning Bitcoin might be illegal.

Owning BTC cannot be compared to owning a weapon, and guns can still be legally held for self protection. BTC isn't harmful to anyone and cant kill either, so holding it isn't as illegal

Not where I am from. There is no penalty or punishment for the owing, buying, selling or use of bitcoin so it is not a crime neither is it illegal.

The Canadian government is just worried for the black market trade that is happening through dark web where the medium of payment is crypto currency. That's where the problem is. Even we can't deny the fact that crypto currency is an ideal medium of payment for such illegal trades. That's where the gap exists. Neither the Canadian government nor this article mentioned that owning crypto currency is illegal in Canada. It's the usage of crypto currency to facilitate such illegal trades through dark web. The existence of dark web is the problem for them and it is true for the majority of the countries nowadays. But this gap can be bridged through proper training to the investigating officers. The title is misleading of this thread and as well as the title of the article. I agree with what eternalgloom said that the article doesn't says anything about that having a bitcoin is a crime. The article is tackling about the illegal use of bitcoin and taking down the biggest dark market which is silk road. And by reading the last words in the article it says that both bitcoin and dollar should be accountable and treated as the same with these illegal trades.

Duh, this topic made my blood burn a little today, if you hold bitcoin in a country that ban it then it is a crime, oppositely on countries who allowed it, it does become crime when you use it to crime but if you use it to help and earn then its only logical purpose.

We can not consider owning a bitcoin as a crime since the government of our country doesn't prohibits it nor put it as an illegal. Also there is no crime motive of owning a bitcoin, it has no bad effect to everyone.

Even holding a gun is considered legal if you have a license, however, I would highly doubt considering it moral unless you were a hunter... some people even doubt that, but I think we will never get to the bottom of what should really be considered moral and what should not...

In most parts of the planet, it's not. Except in countries that have placed strict regulations on cryptocurrencies or Bitcoin in particular. Now here's the thing, Bitcoin in it's sense is good. Having BTC is different from having illegal drugs. If you were caught having illegal drugs in your possession even though you're not using it, you're screwed! It doesn't need an action or activity for it to be illegal coz it has been deemed illegal. Unlike with BTC wherein if you have BTC in your possession but are using it for good work, then that's fine. The only problem is when some dammed individuals do illegal activities using BTC,  stains its image. In your country where bitcoin is legalized and accepted then it could never be a crime but to other countries who have banned bitcoin, then it is another story. I think this could be only considered a crime if you were involved in money laundering and hid your asset in Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency which is fast (we can do transaction within seconds only), cheap (low fees transaction or even free) and secure (no risks on losing like on fiat money). In the beginning, I also had such question.
Recently, tax office in my country gave clear instructions how to report profit from bitcoin and other crypto currencies.
So, we have legal regulation now.
Of course, still is possible that criminals can use bitcoin for their own purpose but at least we don't need to hide our bitcoin income any more.

No,  there is no criminal offense or any illegal activity in owning a bitcoin. 
The comoany of bircoin performs in a good faith wherein all things are good and under the jurisdiction of the law,  so nothing to worry about because bitcoin is a legal thing that supported by the national government.

My opinion for this matter is always the same. Bitcoin and cryptocurrency itself is not a crime. This innovation only aims to help people out. From being a payment method or an asset for investment, bitcoin never meant any harm or cause any another crimes for the record.
