I was stupid enough to use it as my main wallet for faster transactions.
Temporary loss of 25BTC (which is about all I had), I've got another 5BTC in stocks (<3 GLBSE).

Can you buy stocks and shares I thought you couldn't yet.

At some point it gets more profitable to just run away with the money people trust you with then running a business.
Not saying this is the case here but it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

This was bound to happen eventually, the site was just running without a person maintaining it for at least a month; support haven't answered messages since late June. The guy running the site obviously has better things to do than look after his users, he took 1BTC from me over a month ago, probably not malicious but obviously doesn't give a shit about us.

So if you were still using this service after all the complaints in the forum then you were asking for trouble.

What would you recommended as a wallet service replacement?

Bitcoin Weekly funds is stuck there too! Also, 600 BTC that I am responsible for.

I should drop the invite process for flexcoin if this is the case..   we're the only ones in a position to fix this mybitcoin problem.   The problem is that we wanted to slow down the rollout to have an extended testing period before opening registration.    This rushes it and when something is rushed weird things happen.

not that I know of ..  instawallet .. but that site scares me :)   I threw coins up there one time and closed the browser without bookmarking... LOL!

That's not instawallet's fault.. it's mine of course.. but still without any recourse to get my coins back it's somewhat scary in my opinion.

People can still use Mt.Gox for this, coupled with the yubikey (or the HOTP option we'll provide monday) it should be quite secure and there are no fees (not like with the "first bitcoin bank" canadian scam).

By the way I'd guess mybitcoin is acting pro (see http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=22221.0 if anyone remembers it) so stuff should be back soon (well, I'll avoid saying anything negative, it'll be taken badly again)

I think I may just consider this, dumping my coins directly to mtgox makes the most sense ie. using it as my web based wallet for when im on the road.

Most people allready use it as a exchange and trust mtgox for that so having it as our online wallet does make alot of sense.

the 2 options I use, and feel like they are the most secure  :
* mtgox + yubikey is a good wallet service

* bitcoind on a secure dedicated server , you can connect with ssh from everywhere

Wow. I was stuck in deciding on my own wallet or mybitcoin, used mybitcoin for a few days, I just pulled out a few days ago and started to use live usb and encrypting my wallet.

I definitely will never use an online wallet service. For mining with one card atm, even .95 cents is a lot to lose. So glad I decided to pull out a few days ago. So ironic.

No communication is often regarded as a form of bad faith. Information vaccum raise suspicion.

Mybitcoin may be back, or not but they seems to not understand the importance of a status update blog separate from the network.

Online e-wallet and banking service are convenient and plus they are instant. The downside of that is you have to trust.

Not all e-wallet providers have all the features that mybitcoin has.

It is far more easier to have a e-wallet provider interfacing to bitcoind and taking care of all the accounting, instead of doing it all yourself. I've seen already a couple of times that bitcoind died on services. I don't want to have to watch it for 24/7 to make sure it is up.

WalletBit (https://walletbit.com/) appears to be the only one that comes close but they just started a couple of weeks ago. When I get home I'll try integrating them into my shopping cart and see how it goes.

I thought about using Mt. Gox when Mybitcoin went down this time but saw this notice: "Merchant service are currently unavailable, but will be back soon."

Are Merchant Services available again? If so, you should remove that notice.

Yeah, MtGox would do for me. Others are no option, because most don't allow automatic sending of payments.

I've looked up the whois record of bitcoin. abuse@mybitcoin.com is also down. Googled the address, found this:

http://www.nevisfinance.com/Directory.cfm?Idz=1 (same address as under Meridian Trust Company Ltd., with a Tracey Williams-Morton (MyBitcoin owner is registred as Tom Williams), same person?)

<edit>
Mailed Tracey Williams-Morton with the question if she can bring me in contact with Tom Williams.

Please contact me (admin@mtgox.com) so we can discuss your needs as a merchant, and so we can provide the best API for you. We got no merchant on our system so far who expressed a need for any merchant system, however we can get things done quickly if you let us know exactly what kind of payment interface you need.

I coded a WHMCS payment module for MyBitcoin using their SCI, anyway I could do the same for Mt.Gox?
Was planning on selling game servers for Bitcoins.

Yes, just let me know exactly what kind of API you need, and we'll make it happen :)

The problem I have with your merchant system is that your site is extremely slow processing bitcoin deposits.
Often it is 1 hour or more, and mybitcoin did it in a few seconds.
Yes I realize the risk in this, but the services I sell are time sensitive, I cannot hold it for an hour to see if the customer pays or not.
It would be great your API could instantly tell me when a payment is received (even if I have to wait for it to be confirmed in block chain before I can spend it).

I've got the lion's share of my business' money in mybitcoin.com.  I hate that as people lose faith in it and express the justifiable desire to move away from them, it creates more incentive for the creator to actually abscond with everyone's money.

We can make that happen too, a first notification when payment is on the bitcoin network. However we cannot guarantee it'll be confirmed (that's up to miners).

Also, they could let the public know what's going on.

Fortunately, I don't have much in my account with mybitcoin ATM but I still hate losing any BTC.

That being said, I'm willing to wait until Monday at least before entertaining thoughts of persecution or investigation. Don't get me wrong, the downtime is very inconvenient and their customer response time is atrocious, but some people do still take the weekend off, after all.

Whoever is running MyBitcoin has been unresponsive for over a month. It's very likely gone for good. Though if you have any luck finding information, please do share.

You're a curious one, indeed.  You are well aware of the troubles I and others had with mybitcoin weeks ago. You even participated on those threads, and yet you still left money with Pirate Tom.  Did you think we were making it all up?  Didn't it occur to you that your money might be next?

I had money in mybitcoin before anyone posted any problems with them and had not one single satoshi go missing at any point between now and then. The only issue I experienced was some downtime. I even asked a question once through the internal messaging system and got a reply (although it was a week later, hence my "atrocious customer response time" comment). Excuse me if I base my opinions of them on my own experiences instead of others' hearsay.

What could be a compromise is if you send the confirmation when the payment has been seen on the network and actually add the funds to the account of the merchant when there is x blocks containing the payment. From what I know, when the payment has been broadcasted it is already difficult to change/undo it.

And which shop owner runs their webshop on their computer at home? Codes their payment processor themselves and keeps an eye on it that it runs 24/7?

Store bitcoins as a bank? Sure, do that on your home computer. Run a webshop, then you want a payment provider that does all the accounting for you.

No one is laughing.  But those of us who've been burned need to take action so that others don't get hurt.  We should warn everyone away from mybitcoin (which seems to be pretty hard!)  We should ask their promoters like flaky Bruce Wagner to stop luring newbies into their clutches.  We should boycott businesses that use them.

Now everybody go long!

1000btc frozen, lost or stolen by MyBitcoin?

By Todd Bethell

On 12 July 2011, 1000btc MtGox to MyBitcoin.
On 28 July 2011, 1000btc MyBitcoin to MtGox.

28 June 2011, payment notification was received. 8hrs later (the site was still up) visual verification was done in account history of the transaction and correct address.
48 hrs later still no coins.

This is where I need a block explorer expert.
21 minutes after MyBitcoin received the btc block explorer shows the coins from that wallet being split and transmitted hundreds of times all the way down to 1 Satoshi.
Question:
1.   Is this normal or a sign of fraud making it impossible to track?
2.   Are all wallets effectively used as ‘pool wallets’ for payouts?
3.   While I am not accusing MyBitcoin of theft, itn’t plosible that

Approximately 8hrs later the coins had not been credited to my MtGox account. MyBitcoin was still up. My account history showed the coins had been sent and the sent to address was verified correct.
Security Note: The instant before clicking the send button (perhaps when my mouse hovered over it) I notice a screen blink or something changed, but it was too late to avoid clicking the button.

Q1. Has my computer been compromised such that the send address was swapped at the last instant?
Q2. If this is so, how could the correct address be recorded in the MyBitcoin data base?
Q3. Is it coincidence that the MyBitcoin service has gone down for 48hrs with nary a peep from its owner? A person who was very proactive and vocal during the MtGox incident.
Q4. I’m hard pressed to think of a technical reason how or why a transaction confirmation bot would send confirmation of btc transmission before such a transmission had actually occurred. Let alone consciously programmed in this way. It would seem that the bot was part of the book keeping data base and not confirming actual transmission from a ‘hot’ wallet.
Q5. It seems that the way MyBitcoins was using the wallets of its members (pooling them as a matter of operational efficiency or draining them as a scam??) this makes it impossible to track coins or analyze if they are insolvent?
Q6. Was my 1000btc withdrawal lower to water level in his 'hot wallet' enough to show Tom was swimming without a suit? In other words, for whatever reason, he was operating insolvent?

I would not normally keep so many coins in an on-line wallet but this was in preparation for a business transaction that was delayed.

I am preparing a blog and forum post or lessons learned and recommendations going forward:

Is to an answer. Havent lost a cent out of my wallet. Auto backups at random intervals. Encrypted too. Safer than an online wallet or exchange in my eyes,

Please, share that (method, or even script) with us.
This adds to btc value

There was a serious bug in MB some hours before they went down. Probably they just try to fix it.

I should drop the invite process for flexcoin if this is the case..   we're the only ones in a position to fix this mybitcoin problem.   The problem is that we wanted to slow down the rollout to have an extended testing period before opening registration.    This rushes it and when something is rushed weird things happen.
@ Flexcoin Founder. On your site is no contact, no adress, no phone. That's a scam to me. And lately the bitcoin community suffered enough scams.

I was affected by it myself and another person from my jabber list had the same problem. Some hours after reporting it to MB, they went down.

And did you contact them about it?

Sure, i send them a message through the internal msg system.

what bug was it?

Some transactions out of MB (not all which is quite strange) werent processed to the Bitcoin network (they also didnt appeared in the list of unconfirmed transactions).

The transaction didnt reached me yet.

Your wallet.dat.

That is not an answer.

clearly Jan Vornberger of Instawallet is a trusted community member who won't run off with your money.  in the past he's responded quickly to emails from me of a non IW nature.  he also runs Bitcoin Monitor which is a staple of the community as well.  he's constantly innovating and appears to be of a cheerful nature.

not that I know of ..  instawallet .. but that site scares me :)   I threw coins up there one time and closed the browser without bookmarking...

MT.  congrats on mobile solutions!!

We can make that happen too, a first notification when payment is on the bitcoin network. However we cannot guarantee it'll be confirmed (that's up to miners).

MT; if both buyer and merchant have mtgox accts couldn't you make the tx's instantaneous?

He may be the best person on earth, but anyone putting anything over couple BTCs into this instawallet is crazy or clueless really. These wallets are not even protected (no, password in a HTTPS url is not good enough), of course it is very convenient and fast to use but it's like your cash stored in a public library between books. Only good until someone decides to take it from you.

Do you know of a specific mechanism by which someone could take it from you?
As far as I can see - it's infeasible to 'guess' a wallet address.
If you don't leak it - then theoretically only you (and instawallet) should know of a wallet's existence.
(spy software on your computer is also risk.. but that goes for any bitcoin service)

The greatest risk I can see is losing your wallet address - which presumably leaves the coins available for instawallet to claim for themselves at some point.
It's disturbing that the operator doesn't clarify what happens to these 'lost' wallets - or how long before they decide it is lost
(if in fact they do.. but if wallets are sitting with no activity for 5+ years.. don't you think they'd be tempted to just.. reclaim them?)

If all these bitcoins stored on MyBitcoin are in fact gone, does the price of bitcoins go up due to a lowered supply, or down due to a lack of confidence infused into the market?
If the owner decides to trade the bitcoins over the public market, no doubt the market will move dramatically.

[Edit]: Post 400 =D

I wondered myself if it was an attempt at market manipulation, but I think the only way it would drive the price up is if the market was in a rapid downturn - that is, confidence was already so low that only freezing accounts would stop people from selling off their coins.

It's quite possible there isn't a scam going on... but rather panic...   let's assume this guy had 100,000 coins at mybitcoin.. and he had the wallet vanish (IE: harddrive failed, backups sucked)

The kid might have been some 20 something and panicked ..  think about it...  let's assume it was 100,000 coins... but it doesn't matter... if it was 20,000 or 10,000 it doesn't matter..

See the dollar figure must have been so high...  if it was 100,000 coins it was literally 1.3 million dollars that he just lost...  he might have just hid....  vanished...  think of the typical reaction of some college aged kid that lost 1.3 million dollars of other people's money?

I agree that might be a common reaction.   The Polish bitomat guy in that situation was good enough to communicate it though.. you'd think that the mybitcoin guy would have seen that and followed his lead.. but who knows.

While we're speculating - he might also just be sick. Laid up in bed at home, or in hospital.. or dead.

It seems unlikely to me that some 20 something kid would have the knowledge, desire, or means to set up an anonymous corporation in Nevis.  Nor would a 20 something kid have penned the "From the desk of Tom Williams" letter.  This was a mature man or that is, at least, clear to me.

I think he succumbed to temptation when he saw the money pile and realized how willing people were to place their money with him, especially after his site began to screw up, and then after bad press began piling up and people STILL trusted him with their money.  When it became clear to him that he was basically unreachable and that he could commit the perfect crime, he took the money and ran.  I find it fascinating that people are STILL defending pirate Tom when, really, there is no scenario short of his sudden death, where pirate Tom would be unaware of the buzz around his site.

I've got to commend his shrewdness anyway.

There are such scenarios.
If you've ever experienced the death of an immediate family member for example - you'll know that there are times when nothing else matters. Not even a bit.

Serious injury/illness is another such scenario.

Trust me man,  i'm not defending him.   I am stating that it's possible that is what happened.    It's also possible that the guy cashed out 1.3 million dollars worth of bitcoins and now is living large on a big island somewhere with a few hookers to keep him warm at night.

I don't know which solution is true...   and it could be a third (jail, sick, family sick, whatever)

but I doubt it..  I think it's most likely panic or a 1.3 million dollar thief.

I love how this thread got 4k views :P

Anyways, there was a person who joined the forum a few days ago ( TomWilliams (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=36873) ) telling everyone they were the owner of MyBitcoin and everything was being looked at by the FBI...bla bla.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33646

Anyways, Nefario noted that the user was a fake. If you think about it, it kind of makes since.
1) The FBI isn't going to do anything about it.
2) The server host won't care unless he paid extra (on his VPS lol) for data protection.
2.1) Wouldn't that mean that he would have backups??

[Edit]2.1.1)
If he new he was hacked, maybe post a screenshot or some proof that the hackers sent the BTC to another address?
Even if someone could steal it the wallet.dat, they would still have to transfer the BC.

The greatest risk I can see is losing your wallet address - which presumably leaves the coins available for instawallet to claim for themselves at some point.

Well, losing an address is the same type of problem as losing a pass - so you should store it in an encrypted password manager, no problem. But as for https url string - first of all, it is displayed on-screen so anybody can read over your shoulder. Then, it is available to the browser and all extensions, would be stored in history on some browsers and in server logs on their server, and will sure as hell be stored in user's bookmarks - which is a plain file most of the time.

It is next to impossible to reverse a properly hashed password, but in this case an attacker just needs a read access to the system and he gets all of the access keys listed for him right there in /var/log/apache...

I fully understand the author's idea though, people don't like passwords/auth, but this is money, we don't need yet another scandal here, so I suggest BTC users should learn proper security.

Just did a tracert on his server.  Here is what I found.

His hosting provider is a company in the Netherlands by the name of Leaseweb B.V.  One of there websites http://www.leaseweb.net/ is currently down.  According to a quick nslookup on the domain, they have no A records.  So they probably just use this to make subdomains off of, which kinda makes that particular site being down rather irrelevant.

Moving on though, Leaseweb's actual website http://www.leaseweb.com/en is still up and provides a phone number that one can call them at (actually it provides 3).  If anyone would like to make that call.

Leaseweb also seems to have a history of shutting websites down (http://torrentfreak.com/leaseweb-forced-to-shut-down-more-bittorrent-sites-071116/), so in the end it could just be something as simple as them taking down MyBitcoin because some lawyer told them too.

Anyhow, hope this helps everyone out.  I don't think it was mentioned that Leaseweb was MyBitcoin's ISP here.  Although someone did mention it here I found: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1070151

I think there was a thread title where it said just that lol "MyBitcoin.com - hosting provider: leaseweb.com" https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=33020.0

Before anyone else starts ANOTHER thread about this, please realize that the UABB is already spearheading a legal and unbiased investigation into MyBitcoin.com but needs your support. Discussion about MyBitcoin.com is very healthy for the sharing of ideas and suggestions on how to tackle this very serious and difficult problem, but nothing will be done about it through forum posts.

Please start contributing to the actual investigation by adding your affidavit, attaching evidence of funds lost, and contributing to the fund to pay for international investigators. Thank you.

I don't trust the UABB.

I don't trust lawyers.

Businesses are supposed to compete with each other, and any time a bunch of them get together with lawyers bad things are sure to happen.

Just stay out of it.

That's too bad...

I was really hoping someone would try to do something.  I was on your side.

Are you talking about UABB trying to do something?

Make sure you check out some of the other threads regarding mybitcoin and tom williams.
I believe people have already tried contacting the web host.

I've done some following up on the certificates 'Tom' used to sign emails -  dead end so far.
I still have an open query with CACert regarding the certificate used for www.mybitcoin.com itself - but I expect that is an 'unverified' certificate and will reveal nothing.

From the desk of Tom Williams, operator of MyBitcoin.com

For immediate release.

As you have probably noticed, MyBitcoin.com had been down for almost a week due to an unfortunate event.

On Friday of last week we noticed that one of our pooled holding servers was missing a large amount of Bitcoins. After a prompt investigation we realized that the security of our SCI (Shopping Cart Interface) system had been breached by an unknown attacker.

Our response was rash, but necessary. We simply switched the system off until we could have system-wide forensics performed. The forensics took some time, as the system is quite complex by nature.

After weighing all of our options, we have realized that we have no option but to go into receivership. We will settle all accounts with a online claim process that we are currently in the process of working out.

We will release more detailed information about the security breach, the claim process, and our balance sheet in the next few days.
