Someone told me it is better to hold btc rather than altcoins that she doesn't see any reason why people hold altcoin. She noticed altcoins rely heavily on btc that whenever btc fall they also fall with btc. What is your take on this?

from my 1 year experience on the crypto currency. i always keep alt only. alt is very good investment compare to btc. if we need to invest on btc , we have invest lot of. but in alt we can start with little money. if you find potential alts you are rich.

if you someone who likes to just invest, bitcoin will be the king today and almost in the future. So throw your money at alts riskier than BTC. But if you someone who wants to get more BTC, you should trading ALTS. I mean alts by design is to make more BTC. well, dyor and this not an investment advice.

I have only been in the crypto for a few months, during which time I see that bitcoin is still an indicator and can affects other alt, whether it will go up or down. I am also not good at researching and choosing an investment, therefore I only hold the bitcoin and alt popular (top 10 alt in cmc).

For an investment you are free to choose bitcoin and altcoin because that will be worth. I'm not going to decide that this good coin or that coin is not good, it just makes me a fool. But that make me a strange is, someone who come and investing in cryptocurrency they just choose bitcoin only for an investment, they just altcoin only for an investment I mean they didn't choose bitcoin. But I have a confidence for those people who came to this world they will have invested on altcoin and bitcoin.

From the thousands of coins and tokens that exists, probably 5-10 that are usable for a specific reason and no, CoinMarketCap is not an indicator of how useful a coin is. For example, Bitcoin is a must to hold while BitcoinCash is simply a shitty fork regardless of its current price. Ripple is centralized and It's unlikely to go anywhere in the near future and so on..

Alt  is very Good Investment, so it is good to hold

I'd say it's even less than that.  Bitcoin itself barely gets used for anything that resembles real commerce.

ETH?  Never owned it, and I'm not sure what it's good for other than ICOs
LTC?   It's always been silver to bitcoin's gold, but does anyone really spend it?  Doubt it.
DOGE?  Nope.  Nobody spends it and very few places take it, and you can't earn it.

And there are a whole bunch of similar coins of varying popularity.  What they all have in common is that people buy and sell them for the sake of doing so, and they serve no economic purpose.

It depends on you if you realy want to hold your altcoins no ones bother you about that. If your see that you already earn a good profit then why not, the main reason why i am holding my altcoins since i dont have  a good profit yet so i will hold it and patiently wait for a good chance to sell in higher price as i can earn a good profit.

I think only 2% of all altcoins grew up in the proportion altcoin/btc. I think you must hold some of them for get more profit than in bitcoin. In my portfolio one, two stable altcoins and bitcoins.

my opinion Altcoin price depends on bitcoin price, for me both also very good we get better income, moreover you can do trading for me You will more easily make money in a short time. if for me want to hold bitcoin in long term very good us by waiting for higher price.

I respect her opinion but what I see is that there are some altcoins that have more usage than bitcoin and they have the potential to grow in the future. My conclusion is that its ideal to hold bitcoin and other good altcoins.

so the real question is why do some people think if they hold altcoins they are diversifying? diversification is true only when you are investing in something that does not rely on the same thing you have already invested in.

on top of it investing for long term is only good if you are investing in something that has a real future not speculative one. altcoins are pure speculation and because of that their future is very risky.

it is true alt price depends on bitcoin, if you have a lot of money you can use it for bitcoin investment but if you have little money, you can use it to buy altcoin and if you want a long term investment then dogecoin is a good investment and has great potential with very low price less than one dollar.

It all depends because for me altcoins have two categories, those major coins that is good for long term holding like what we do to bitcoin while the other altcoins are just for day trading. By separating those altcoins you will know which are belong to major coins and they are ethereum, bitcoin cash and other known altcoins that are on top of the market as of today. And if you are a day trader I know you have idea what are those coins that's good just for short term investment and not for holding for a long time.

Not necesary because if you already earn a good profit for that then you can sell your tokens anytime you like. I am a long term trader but if i see that i have a good profit already in my tokens i would sell haft of them and take my capital then my profit will hold for a long term. Holding is the best and easy and also low risk in crypto trading thats why pro traders usualy recomend hold.

Altcoin is quite high risk, but if we can choose altcoin correctly then we can get a great profit. Utilizing the action of dump and pump can make us gain profit, it is actually more to a strategy because with a good strategy then we will be able to produce something satisfactory.

It depends on your investing personality. Bitcoin rises after good news, altcoins rise after great rumors about development. Most altcoins have underdeveloped/unfinished codes so potential is higher with investing.

For late comers and to those who wants a cheaper investment Altcoin is the best choice but when it come to safety and easy to recover when in red days I'll go for those that are listed as top 15 on the coinmarketcap. Bitcoin is most likely be the choice most especially if crypto is just our only source of income just like me. I find Altcoins good because they are way cheaper than Bitcoin but we also accept the fact that some Altcoins are not accepted especially on our local exchangers. Here in my country Only Bitcoin and Ethereum are accepted or we are able to convert it to our fiat currency without hassle or even buy prepaid loads, pay bills and shop online.

I held some of my altcoins for about 9 months and some have barely moved. It's not just about holding them it's about monitoring the price and selling at the right time. Set yourself a limit and sell as soon as it reaches that threshold. If I'd sold everything in December I'd have 4x easily.

In the end I ended up doubling which is still good but greed kind of sucks like that!

It's why majority are holding bitcoin and I don't also know what lies in the minds of altcoin holders.

They may look bitcoin as something expensive so instead of buying it, they would rather take the risk and start loving altcoin instead.

I actually prefer holding alts to BTC. However, I track my portfolio in BTC value. The thing with alts is that during the rise of the market you will gain more than with just holding BTC so it's better..but the risk is that during the fall you also lose more than just holding BTC so it's riskier. I don't hold a lot of the top alts however I just trade them, because I feel their room of growth is a bit limited unless something extraordinary happens. I try to search for low marketcaps with potential of the most growth to hold. I'd say one has to set a certain part of portfolio for trading major alts, and another for holding low marketcap coins and a part in btc for opportunities.

I don't think all altcoins are suitable for holding. I bought some alts just because they were had a great hype potential and were acclaimed by Reddit users. When I buy something for holding, I truly believe in the project and want it to come true.

Holding bitcoin or any altcoins is not a must. Its up to you if you want to hold them. Some got lucky who buy altcoins in its lowest price and hold it for a year and got profited a lot. It maybe much ideal to hold bitcoin for long term but there are also altcoins that are also good for long term investments like ethereum, litecoin and monero. The rest maybe promising at first but cannot survive for a long run. And altcoins are much cheaper than bitcoin just be extra careful on what altcoin you are buying to.

I agree with the comments above because if we keep altcoin long-term, we will face a double hole. Most of altcoins are affected by bitcoin. If keep altcoin the decline would be greater than keeping bitcoin. So if we invest long - term , we should keep bitcoin

In my opinion it depends on the time that you want to hold them, bitcoin is good to hold for years and some of the altcoins are good to hold for half year and then sell.

Well I wold say that don't believe what other people say. I would suggest you to do what you want and not to follow somebody else.
If you think Bitcoin is a better investment than any altcoins then invest in it and if you altcoins give out better returns than Bitcoin then you should definitely invest in altcoins. The crypto market is volatile , this results in various situations where BTC goes up and altcoins goes down and vice versa and sometimes both goes in same direction. So you should only in the coins you believe will give you better returns. My potential coins are BTC,  ETH and EOS.

Some altcoins are just exceptional, that no matter how btc falls, they may not fall alongside btc. They seems to be independent of the fall of btc. An example of such coin is MTC. There are some others that also behave the same way. I hold altcoins and i have benefitted from it.

According to me, diversifying your investment is the best thing to do in current market situation. It’s good to keep 40% of your investment in bitcoin and divide the rest 60% into number of altcoins. Investing in a single coin can prove risky and you might experience severe loss.

Bitcoin is less volatile when compared to altcoins, but in terms of profit, altcoins can give much more profit than BTC, therefore having both in your portfolio is recommended.

You have to tae decision by yourself. BTC is more stable , but with alts you can gain more as it more volatile.

It actually depends on the token holder if he or she really wants to sell it. If the holder is already satisfied what he will get when he sell it. But as of now the market are down so it means that all tokens are dumping so all of token holders should hold and hold for a long time as the market recovers.

I choose to hold more alts rather than bitcoin because i think bitcoin is only useful as store of value, compared to alts which has many uses according to their project and that make them more likely to go up in value. As for me holding altcoin has a biggest return investment. For me base on the record altcoin can still give you more than 500% return profit. Even BTC has fall. This is effective for people whose goal is long term goal.

That depends on you completely op. You need to decide since you are talking about your funds. HODLING and selling quickly are both effective strategies, but selling at the right moment is another important factor which many people ignore. I think we should hold bitcoin with 50% funds and other 50% split between 2-5 altcoins. This is the best ways to get maximum profit with backup plan to sercue yours fund. Bitcoin may have no good technology than many others altcoins, but i think it will keep grow in the future.

What if you saved both bitcoin and altcoins. Bitcoin is down, alts are also down, when price of bitcoin increases, altcoins price will also increases ans you can double you profit.

If we notice that the coins have promising concept and can attract the investors to buy in the next days, I think that It is still worthy to hold the coins. But, we must analyze the market and the progress of the coins. I'm still holding my altcoins although the price is now very dropped. So, it will depend on the coins.

not altogether, there are some alt that did rise even though the value of btc dropped by then, from my experience in crypto world, 1 altcoin is rising very significantly in 1 month, it up to 6400%. imagine you can make that much profit only if you choose the right altcoin.

hold your bitcoin or altcoin I think its potential is almost the same. Indeed altcoin right to follow every movement of the bitcoin. but the rise and development of the altcoin many of the bitcoin and this babe when missed. so hold the both of them I think the better.

I've said this many times before - I don't think bitcoin is the long-term future of cryptos and that it will be one of these 'alt' coins that will achieve the most success. The problem is identifying which project! A lot of people hold alts for trading, big growth potential...a lot hold just to diversify their portfolio. It's up to you, but I personally think that it's a safer bet to diversify....even if the alt market doesn't look great at the moment.

Some altcoin are good to hold because that altcoin have good project and real product. My investment beside bitcoin is RavenCoin. Its good coin with good developers and i think ravencoin price will rising.

The entire Altcoins mostly are dependent upon Bitcoin's price movements except for the very few coins. Holding Bitcoin is good only up to the amount of money that you can afford to lose considering the volatile nature of it. I don't personally hold it longer but trade it for gains either in the red or in the green market. But holding favorite Altcoins I still do, I even mine them or work to collect some of them, while I am hopeful of its rise in the future but I hodle not primarily of profit but for fun. If I would like to gain, I would have to trade and earn small rather than waiting for an unpredictable rally.

Actually there are lots of factors works in this field , for exmaple a usual thing that we can see that when the price of bitcoin will get up then in that case price of the altcoins get down and vice versa .

Though I have knowledge in the market and I do research, I also prefer investing in just BTC and top altcoins. I am more firm about investing in well established coins rather than newly added coins.

You won't be able to get the same returns with Bitcoin that you will get with altcoins. Bitcoin has grown so much that moving its prices isn't easy and you won't get the same x10-20 returns like you used to get earlier. I do not believe it will continue that way. Bitcoin market capitalization is huge, and we need Altcoin to bring this industry to life.
Some new projects are really created for the long term, and it certainly starts from scratch.

Maybe we should look at it, or at least imagine how all Altcoin, especially the famous Altcoin get support. Of course we need Altcoin, because if not, then Bitcoin will not be more interesting from now on. And by the way, by percentage growth, I even bet Ripple over Bitcoin for the next 3-5 years.

If your altcoin price is low at the moment, you can hold it and wait for the time when the price will rise up. Then you can earn a big profit from it. But if the price is profitable you can invest. I would prefer to hold some tokens to earn big profit. Holding your coins is a work of real patients.You must do it if you want to make a great amount of real profit.

I think we should hold well-known altcoins, they are relatively safe to hold for long-term and they have got the potential to grow in future, but don't hold shitcoins in the hope of getting huge profit.

It is very profitable to keep the altcoins while on a rising market but keeping  altcoins in a falling market can cause more losses than Bitcoin. Choosing good altcoin and keeping it is the investor's personal preference. Personally i usually keep altcoins at 30%  of my bag.

in my mind, if you invest you are free to choose bitcoin and altcoin because it will be worth. I will not decide that a good coin or a coin is not good, it just makes me stupid. Yes, specially if the prices of your altcoins are low, then you should really hold your altcoins. If not, you will not earn as much and you will surely regret in the end when the prices goes up.

In venture you are allowed to pick bitcoin and altcoin in light of the fact that that will be worth. I'm not going to choose that this great coin or that coin isn't great, it just makes me a trick. I switched to such a situation where I converted my whole BTC to altcoin. I know it is not a good move but this can provide good returns but the only risk it contains is that when the market sinks there is a sharp decrease in your BTC holdings. But when you have some share of BTC in your account you will not see such a massive decrease in your wallet due to which it is always advised to have at-least 30-40% of your money in Bitcoin, so that your whole money does't flush out of market.

True that the alts highly rely on Bitcoin and see a gain and fall bitcoin does, but I prefer investing in alts because they  help in earning more percentage of profit than Bitcoin in the same period of time. the reason alts fall along side BTC is becuase they simply don't have fiat pairs and barley any of them have an actual main net, most if not all altcoins don't have the community that BTC has and i think the catalyst will be fiat pairs and regulation.

i think so, it will be better to hold bitcoin in long term period investment rather than choosing altcoin to hold in long term period. Altcoin are very vulnerable to be undervalue or even make it zero value. We cant predict how long will altcoin last without any good news or few upgrades on it. its too risky to invest in altcoin for long term period, especially if we face such currenct market situation which the most of altcoin's price dropped and really hard to rise again.
