Title: Why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?
Post by: eatrader on December 11, 2013, 12:37:43 PM
I am considering writing an article of the advantages of Bitcoin over Paypal. Answering the question "Why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?"  This will serve to help the undecided to take the plunge.

So, why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?

Plenty of reasons just Google "PayPal sucks".

Fees

This. I had a massive $10 fee for large payment of about $500 which is ridiculous. With Bitcoins I only need to pay like 10 cents if I'm generous. Not to mention there are no charge backs or limitations.

Bitcoin appreciates.  PayPal doesn't even appreciate your business enough to stop making it theirs.

You thought you have money on your Paypal account? You don't, all you have is numbers, they can freely decide to freeze your funds, all you can do afterwards is to plead them again and again.

Also, it's important to point out, that Paypal personal account is beyond the reach of citizens of certain developed nations(like Japan) see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paypal#Japan , Paypal division in China is also forced to operate in a separate network, in short, all these services branded collectively as Paypal hardly interact with each other, unlike the seamless payment network that is Bitcoin, the purported global accesibility of Paypal is just an illusion.

Finally, Paypal doesn't even offer an escrowing service! Shocking, isn't it?

To be honest I don't think Bitcoin currently is alternative/replacement for Paypal. Both solutions are about cash, but they are slightly different.

First: Paypal is all about local currencies and e-commerce. In e-commerce area bitcoin is light years behind Paypal.
Please note here that Paypal is a layer on top of standard Banking Systems (Credit/Debit cards, Wire transfers), not a standalone solution. In this case Bitcoin as a protocol is Banking System alternative not Paypal itself. For solution like paypal we will need to wait for something built on top of Bitcoin.

Second: Bitcoin is all about independence and full control. Paypal is all about fast cash flow.

We need to remember and take into consideration that currently Bitcoin popularity and value is based on its potential to grow, so "cash/value" in bitcoin circulation is just "investment" of its users. To be honest this "grow potential" is also one of biggest problems of Bitcoin, as it is worthless in context of e-commerce (I assume this would be a major application of bitcoin) as a value tends to change 10 - 30% in one day. So when you are selling shoes for Bitcoin its a bit risky, because tomorrow you can have 30% less "value" in your pocket. Who will take so much risk (SilkRoad clones are excluded) when safer solutions are used (i.e. Paypal)?

PayPal doesn't actually have any of the money and becoming a global ponzi scam as more and more people fall victim, but they all say "well eBay.." NO! eBay is shit too they even attacked craigslist for taking away massive amount of business.

PayPal has become evil, literally.

With Bitcoin:

Escrow is optional, and there is competition between escrow services, providing different levels of service.
Currency Exchange is optional, with a choice of exchanges.

If it weren't for ebay, I would not use Paypal.

This is interesting.  I have stood that micro transactions are not feasible on Paypal because of minimums. I know u can do "friend" trade but when the world starts using bitcoin to reward for the smallest transactions, Paypal wont be able to compete.

You are wrong here, Paypal have this money, as they are part of a transaction. When you send money from Bank to Paypal, they are part of banking transaction between you, so by law they are obligated to have this money. Paypal is also regulated and audited, so at this "ponzi scam" you are just wrong, of course they can fraud all of that money, but risk is rather small (not bigger than fraud in your bank). I can understand that many bitcoiners are haters of Paypal mentality and business, but such interpretation of Paypal operations is just incorrect.

I only use PayPal if the business I'm involved in has a bunch of PayPal users.

Otherwise BTC is here to replace banks, currency, and extra (extra) medians for exchange such as PayPal.

my friend transferred  about 2.6 million dollars  worth of BTC to singapore for a property deal
for like 60cents and took about an hour to get the 6 confirmations

imagine what that would have costed through regular banking  and how much  longer it would have taken   ?

Yeah and the snooping eye... "I should give you $2.6M of the money that you trust me to hold, for what?  I will have to get a manager to to authorize."  Two days go by and magically that property is sold for $2.8M.  Banks are done.

Headed over to r/Ebay is search for a contrary opinion.  Horror stories everywhere...

http://www.reddit.com/r/Ebay/comments/1rkkif/having_trouble_claiming_money_from_ebay_help/

I can see now why EBay is embracing Bitcoin.  Sellers on EBay and merchants in real world need fast confirmation and clearance of money.  If you want to buy, be willing to pay.

So, why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?

1) Lower fees.  Please don't say Bitcoin is "free" but it is very low cost.
2) Less chance of fraud.  No wondering if your buyer can be trusted, if he is using a hacked account, if you are going to get a chargeback.
3) No central authority.  Ever had a PayPal account frozen for 30 to 180 days.  Your money but you can't spend it or even withdrawal it because PayPal says so.  No appeal, your funds are just held hostage because it is their network.  That can't happen with Bitcoin.

there are many reasons paypal sucks

there are many reasons bitcoins is better.

but i can only think of one reason to use paypal, which is Ebay's vast product range. and that is it.

once ebay drops paypal and uses a crypto currency as its backbone system for value storage, thus removing the requirement of servers, databases etc(saving ebay money). paypal will be useless

2. No charge-backs
3. No fraud
4. Anonymity
5. No need for adding CC / Bank account
6. No currency conversion fees
7. No hidden political agendas (e.g. Paypal blocking Wikileaks' account)
8. Applicable worldwide (Paypal cannot be used in e.g. Macedonia, Belarus, Tibet, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and many other countries)
9. No dependency on some company who decide what you are allowed to buy or not
10. No need to 'register' anything, no account, no ID verification
11. No risk of getting your account frozen at whim by Paypal (happens quite often (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=paypal+freezes)!)

paypal will block your account and seize your funds on a whim, they are the controller of your money, do you really like that idea.

I use paypal a lot, not just for ebay but on other merchant sites as well. I'm a business-class merchant paypal customer, not just the normal user, so keep that in mind when I say this.

I've done large transactions, I've done small transactions. They've called me moments after placing a large transaction to verify I was actually meaning to do that (anti-fraud service, which is nice). On the contrary, I've had them freeze small transactions, not call me, and I was unable to reach them for days by phone.

I've had my account frozen, I've had transactions held for no apparent reason. Not often, but a few times. I don't keep large amounts of money in my paypal balance just for this reason.

In answering the OP question, and since we already know what cryptocurrency is, I think we need to examine: What IS paypal exactly? Here are some short notes on that at a macro level:

Financially:
  • It is a transaction service (fiat to fiat, fiat to balance sheet, etc)
  • It is a credit service
  • It is a bank/financial company

Functionally:
  • It is a merchant/retailer exchange/interface/website with many features, which tie the financial services to mobile/internet functionality
  • A certified address book / shipment center
  • A proof of identity/validity provider

Logistically:
  • It is usable in many countries, with certain restrictions
  • It is centralized, with processing power controlled by itself
  • It caters toward the highest bidder--companies and stock holders
  • It is involved in politics (politics + financial transactions = bad)

Summary: You can see that at a macro level, it's not much different than cryptocurrency and a crypto exchange (minus the politics), but the detractors would use FUD to say otherwise. Read on.

PayPal pros:

  • Lots of merchants take it, and it makes it easy so you don't have to register an account on some website to buy a product or service
  • It ties in your verified shipping addresses, makes checkout quick
  • Lets you choose a funding source, easy to add new ones once verified
  • Fairly secure
  • Easy to integrate into your website or to receive money into your bank account (faster than bitcoin)
  • Take card payments manually or by swiping
  • Chargebacks (yes, this is a pro for the consumer being ripped off)
  • Can pull fiat out of any ATM
  • Can put withdrawl and transfer limits in place, based on daily, weekly and monthly allottment (safety measure)

Summary: A lot of this could be handled on an exchange site (for instance, coinbase), on a functionality level.

Paypal cons (ones I haven't seen mentioned yet):
  • They will limit your funding source options at times
  • They may limit how much you can pay in one transaction, even if it's  below the $10k mark--sometimes it's random
  • If your transaction (or the goods/services for it) are challenged, it's tough to work the situation out
  • No escrow - they allow chargebacks if someone can prove they've been swindled, but they don't provide an escrow ability to circumvent swindling
  • Hard for non-US citizens, or US residents who are legally allowed to be here, to obtain verified accounts (or accounts at all)
  • Relating to having a "Balance" in PayPal (money on hand in the paypal account), you can only have one of these balances, you can't easily distribute it between users of the account
  • Fees can hurt on large transactions!!!
  • If they don't like items, they won't let you use their service for it (example, gun related items are barred from their list of allowable reasons to use their service)

Summary: these cons are overcome by cryptocurrencies, except escrow of course

Cryptocurrency solves many of the cons, while not taking away many of the pros (bold ones are those which really excite me the most):

  • You are wholly responsible and in full control of all of your assets. Period.
  • No overspending, overdraws, fees relating to this, etc
  • It doesn't matter what your citizenship status is, nor your age, etc--it's the MOST HUMANITARIAN financial transaction system in the world. It's like having secured cash which can be sent anywhere in the universe within a second.
  • Fees are moot
  • You can turn any physical object into a wallet, as long as you can put the wallet and key info on it--this is neat. You could laser-engrave a wallet ID in a crystal and give it to someone, and it will HAVE value (anyone wishing to take this idea.. i claim royalty lol)
  • It is, by far, the easiest payment/transaction system I have ever used for purchase - at times, no need for me to log in to anything, just enter an address and click a button
  • You can view your balance/transactions securely from anywhere, using anything, without the concern for encryption -- just look up your wallet in the blockchain. This is much nicer than worrying about logging into your bank account, especially on questionable networks or in public. This is amazing to me.
  • It is decentralized, with processing power spread throughout the globe
  • For the time being, those providing the transaction guarantee and security, are being well compensated for their efforts. Even once this isn't the case, the network will be well established and mostly self sustaining. Cryptocurrency-esque stuff is the wave of the future.
  • It provides a level of identity security for those who care, but it's not beyond tracability, for those who are afraid of such issues
  • There's no question of fund availability
  • Transactions are guaranteed and instantaneous
  • You control your own balance sheet, and can split it up however you want (multiple wallets, etc)
  • No special equipment or software needed to verify funds
  • There's no wizard of Oz, man behind the curtain, controlling your money or transactions or anything else
  • Merchant interaction is limited only to what can be developed.. just like PayPal was 10 years ago. In its infancy, PayPal was no different than bitcoin now. Too many people (I think, anti-bitcoin people) use FUD to say it's not easy to work with.. it's easier than anything else on the internet!!!

Hopefully this is useful. If I can think of anything else I'll contribute.

Will you be doing interviews or anything similar down the road? I'm sure some of us can share our story.

(edited to add gun-related bullet point)

Paypal would be great if they weren’t such bastards.

A few years ago I sold a camera on ebay and the buyer claimed to have not received the item even though I sent it and had proof that somebody signed for it. For some reason they found in favour of the buyer and put my account into negative balance, and eventually even sent me out a letter from a collection agency. Luckily, after a while I managed to appeal the decision and got my money back, but I’ve heard horror stories where people haven't been as fortunate as me.

Why do I read stories about sellers in a bitcoin transaction being at such risk.  Arent some of these transactions using escrow services?

Because the money could dip 50% after they complete the transaction but before they cash out.

But since Paypal can steal 100% of your money, it still seems less risky.  Besides, if you keep the bitcoins long enough, they will probably go back to the value you paid for them.

Real life example.  I owed my dad (who doesn't use bitcoins) $31, and I told him I could send it via paypal or mail him a check.  While the money was transferred instantly to his paypal account, they require three business days to transfer the money out of his paypal account and into his bank.  Three days of delay.  And mailing a check will take 2-3 days to arrive.  Again, 2-3 days of delay.  I told him if he had a bitcoin wallet I'd just send him the money and he'd have it for all intents and purposes instantly.

I know one of the gripes about BTC is that it's slow to confirm payments, but in many instances (like this) it's much faster than other methods.

As a buyer you shouldn't as paypal is one of the most buyer friendly services around including protection, hence why sellers hate it. Yes we always here sellers complaining they reward buyers most of the cases, which if sellers take proper preqautions such as signature confirmation they can protect themselves from scams. Yes please come on here and tell us how you did all of this and paypal still screwed you, guess what your a minority.

Only reason to use bitcoin is if your a scammer who sell crap or phantom products so there is no way to charge back. Or if you enjoy having the price of your currency fluctaute wildly so you have to become a speculative trader and place your order at the peaks to spend the least amount of btc.

Not to mention fees from different exchanges add up way more than paypal.

In a bunch of countries you cant even cash out your balance to a CC which is pretty ridiculous .

Please tell us how great it is to cash out of gox with 1 month delays. In normal developed countries paypal has a credit card which has your balance on it and you can use it directly.

A few months ago i sold 15 LTC on ebay. The buyer used a hacked paypal account to pay for them.
I recived a chargeback so i opened a paypal dispute but was told becuase i sold "virtual goods" i was not covered with paypal buyer protection.

Lesson learned and faith lost in paypal.

Those LTC would be worth $458 right now  >:(

Yes lose faith in paypal because you broke ebay and paypals policies. I guess if you sent bitcoin to a scammer or a random address and found out bitcoin transactions are not reversible you would lose faith in bitcoin?

Paypal should front the money out of their own pocket. It's not just digital goods they do this for.

The only reason for bitcoin is to scam people? That's insane.

Also, paypal charges you 3% average to receive money/payment. When was the last time you made a $1,000 btc transaction and lost 3%?

Only reason to use bitcoin is if your a scammer who sell crap or phantom products so there is no way to charge back. Or if you enjoy having the price of your currency fluctaute wildly so you have to become a speculative trader and place your order at the peaks to spend the least amount of btc.

Not to mention fees from different exchanges add up way more than paypal.

The only reason for bitcoin is to scam people? That's insane.

Also, paypal charges you 3% average to receive money/payment. When was the last time you made a $1,000 btc transaction and lost 3%?

What? Buying bitcoins on whatever exchange with whatever funding cost is already 3%+ converting said bitcoin back into fiat and withdrawing is another 3%+

Unless you can pay for all your things in Bitcoin which for 99% of things you cant.

So, why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?

Because PayPal can freeze your account when ever they feel like, and for what ever reason they feel like. I hope PayPal close down in the future, thanks to Bitcoin.

Not talking about buying bitcoin, I'm talking about simply sending or receiving money. If you have a balance on paypal (same as having BTC in an exchange), and you send/recv, there is a 3% minimum loss for at least one of the parties.

If you send BTC, nobody is charged anything close to that.

Who cares if you send bitcoin.  Bitcoin without conversion into fiat is useless, as 99% of things don't accept it. In the future if you can pay for things with bitcoin then it will have an advantage. Until then transfering without conversion is useless.

How much research did you do before you posted this question? If you'd done a day or so of extensive research, it would be pretty clear what the pro's and con's are with both alternatives. In the future, before posting, please do research yourself first, then ask if you have intelligent and informed questions that you couldn't find the answer to by googling.

I wondering what your 'article' is going to look like if this is the level of effort you put into your 'research'.

It's relevent to the OP. PayPal can be used to send money between people. It takes a chunk out of the money when you do so, regardless of if you pull the actual money out physically. Bitcoin can be used to send money between people, with next to no fee, regardless of if you pull the money out.

I dunno bout your exchange experience, but the last time I cashed out several grand of BTC through coinbase, I think the fee was like.. a few bucks. Several grand with paypal would be close to a hundred bucks of fees.

I am considering writing an article of the advantages of Bitcoin over Paypal. Answering the question "Why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?"  This will serve to help the undecided to take the plunge.

Ok since you clearly want to argue meritlless points.

1. When you use paypal since you are transfering fiat you can use it for 100% for buying products or services. When you use bitcoin you can do anything with it without exchanging it to fiat.

2. In the US if you exchange Bitcoin to Fiat it is illegal without a Money Service Business license.

3. If you want to use your "money" for anything use paypal, if you want your money to become useless use bitcoin.

Lastly, like the other user said before 5 min of research would of answered your question.

Funny how everybody was saying PP is evil , PP is the root of all problems.
Then an interview appeared with David Marcus.
The whole board turned: Paypal is adopting bitcoin!  Yeah!!! To the moon!

This is both funny and sad to watch.

As much as I dislike paypal and its polices, if PP accepted Bitcoins it would be great for Bitcoin in general.

You know what millions , is to paypal?
They are pretty confident at the numbers they are rolling out right now.
And , you can see that people are selling and buying btc and mining equipment on e-bay even right now.

The thing is , imagine the hit bitpay received when the price plummeted right after they made all those sales (including 300kusd worth in just 2 cars).
The big guys are not willing to risk billions on this (not millions).

Yeah, hundreds of millions is a lot of money to Paypal. And if the value of BTC decreases, you just hold the Bitcoin until it regains value.

Do you think they could just hold millions in BTC and wait for another price rise?
They don't deal with investments , they have a total different plan based on liquidity.

Try to read the interview David gave , and you'll see their concerns . And they have some real arguments why they don't embrace bitcoin yet.
And he isn't a bitcoin hater , he owns a few bitcoins himself.

Stop being a hot blooded zealot and analyze a bit the whole picture for a few..

Either way, i think its a great idea :)

Paypal blocks me from purchasing ebay items and having it shipped to friends overseas. Sometimes if the shipping address isnt in the same country as the billing address on Paypal they just say no during checkout.

Paypal can charge you without your knowledge or permission.  Paypal can hold or seize your funds.

When you have bitcoins, only you can use or lose them.  It's radically different.

I dont know why you guys hate a third party so much. paypal may make a bad customer experience, however we have a much better third party company called "zhifubao" here in china, everybody loves it, everybody use it. In fact we trust it even more than a bank.

Conceptually bitcoin is good, however it has a long road to go until everybody use it(if it reach that day). We love "zhifubao" in china because if we receive a defected item, we could always refuse to pay the money, it makes the buyers safer(sellers too because if a buyer refuse to pay, he/she has to give the concrete evidence).

And it's quick.

For bitcoin, 5 confirmation? way too long.

And I can't get my coins back if the seller fraud me ? Hell I won't use it at all.

I guess that's why coinbase got its 30million dollars capital. However what makes it better than just a nother third party using bitcoin instead of any other currency?  I'd say it's cross border trading, if any.

My 2 cents here.

well, we hate paypal because they have a reputation of "protecting" buyers by screwing over sellers, and gradually charging exorbitant fees for their services. whatever paypal/ebay do, it is in the interest of swalling anything and everything in its path.. for the sake of dominance.

that sounds about right.. probably something like $4.30 or something around there. and if you sold on ebay, don't forget to add another $15 or so. seems like they keep ebay and paypal technically separate so they can double charge the fees.

In all honesty, PayPal is a good thing. It was a revolutionary way of sending money over the Internet which is badly needed and helped to improve commerce online for millions of people.

But it was a transitional solution which required a central company to work on it in order to take it through the baby steps in the beginning to the point where people are comfortable with sending money online today.

Bitcoin improves upon this idea and takes away the overhead and complication of a central solution and distributes it. This allows for the added benefits that Bitcoin provides in an environment where online transactions are the norm without the need to completely revolutionize the way people think about spending money.

The question should be: Should paypal use bitcoin instead of USD? And the answer is no, they serve different purpose, like comparing nuclear warheads against pistol bullets

Bitcoin is a digital asset, which is more suitable for other much more important things than online shopping

Another thing I just remembered, relating to "paypal being involved in politics" under my original post: Paypal doesn't like it when you use their service to buy anything gun related (even accessories), whether it's from an official store or not.

If that matters to anyone. But the fact they won't let you use your money on a product because they deem it unworthy, is unsatisfactory.

These answers are amazing.  I would argue that 70+ replies is the reason that "I" should use Bitcoin.  Head over to r/Ebay and all you see is horror stories and problems, but in the Bitcoin world, there is a community bound together to assist.

The judicial systems around the world attempt to build a foundation of "forced" trust in business deals. Enormous costs are associated in creating, managing, and enforcing these systems.  Judges, lawyers, and law enforcement to name a few.  Bitcoin erases the need for these systems, in order to have a trusted transaction.  It is this judicial system.  And to that end, Bitcoin is liberty and freedom.  Freedom from the need of these systems that are shaped by lobbyists and political agendas.  The founding fathers of the US believed in Liberty and Freedom.  They taught us that when the government fears the people you have Liberty, but when the people fear government, you have tyranny.  Tyranny is the breading ground for improper allocation of public resources, even from the most altruistic person/entity.

Paypal simply leans on the judicial system to run an online payment processing service.  They sit as judge and jury because they know that they can lean on the judicial system if needed.  There really is no other way to play the game in that world.  They are credited for being a snitch once in a while.  Give a few to slaughter, so the public systems don't look over the fence and start putting more restrictions on Paypal.  I say they are doing a pretty good job overall.  What you are telling me is there will always be a place for PayPal.  There is not contempt within Bitcoin community for Paypal, and I am actually relieved.  The story has more merit than ever because of this fact.

I simply chose Paypal because of it's adoption.  Not to beat them up.  I think the world needs to understand that the Bitcoin community is not bashing them.  Especially in light of this article  http://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/2013/12/11/paypal-president-david-marcus-bitcoin-good-nfc-bad/ (http://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/2013/12/11/paypal-president-david-marcus-bitcoin-good-nfc-bad/). But the public needs to be educated on the benefits of using Bitcoin to transact.

My next step is to PM some of the people on this thread.  Some suggested interviews so I will reach out.  This story needs to be explained properly.

There are a lot of limitations as far as this aspect is considered. If it is a small number of coins, then it is fine. But how can you cash out hundreds of coins without alerting the tax authority? I have no idea.

Hmm... Comparing a U.S. based business which primarily holds a currency at a razor thin safety margin which is going to inevitably crash to a decentralized state of the art Bitcoin, sounds legit.

Plus I was straight up robbed by Paypal, the seller claimed he shipped, then I contacted them when I found out he didn't, they told me to wait 10 days, I have waited 10 days, contacted them again and they told me that it's too late to reverse the transaction. Lost 400$.

I made my first non-BTC related purchase using BTC a couple of days ago - a pro account at putlocker.com

Overall, very impressed with how easy it was. And it was instant too (low value, so I guess they chose not to wait for confirms).

Scan QR code/copy unique BTC address, pay.

Put that in a super secure mobile app and boom, we're good to go.

(Is there such an app - Electrum Mobile would be ideal - that uses the same wallets as the full app on your PC?)

Eatrader in my personnel opinion you have took a wrong topic instead you should write on PayPal advantages over bitcoin or any other crypto currency. Like PayPal is financed by your real fiat currency while bitcoin is a digital currency backed with nothing I guess. You could see how china is beating bitcoin these days

I am considering writing an article of the advantages of Bitcoin over Paypal. Answering the question "Why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?"  This will serve to help the undecided to take the plunge.

So, why should I use Bitcoin instead of Paypal?

Asking this you're showing you don't have a clue about how paypal works... so, you better stay away from both (btc and paypal)  ;D
