This is a list of all the physical cryptocurrencys produced and the volumes minted. They have been ordered by they year they were first minted and made available, although they may have been available in subsequent years.

Items marked '[]' are to do or have been filled out as a best guesses. I have cited any references I could find. If you are able to elaborate and help provide definitive information to clarify any of these areas please do comment below so I can reference it.

I am currently working on a set of canonical images for each piece of physical crypto. If you have some high quality images you are willing to share please let me know and I will add them to this post.

The Bitcoin Exchange of New Orleans had minted coins in denominations of 1, 5 and 10 BTC each with a unique ID number, but these were never officially issued. Apparently The Bitcoin Exchange of New Orleans would act as the central authority that stored the private keys.

Selection Criteria:
    • Physical cryptocurrency must represent a store of value: either minted as a token where a central authority holds the private keys to access the balance or the token itself contains the private key. Tokens can be supplied funded or unfunded and fundable.
    • The cryptocurrency being minted as a physical medium must have a publicly viewable blockchain-like data structure, be open source and based on proof of work or proof of stake.
    • Maker must have produced over 450 units of their physical cryptocurrency.
    • Physical currency can be any medium, e.g. card, paper wallet etc., but must be physical.
    • Volumes are only given for minted media provided pre-loaded with cryptocurrency.

I stepped out of the physical cryptocurrency business as it seemed a little too risky with current moves by the feds. You can however still print out the bills I used here:

and it include instructions as well as source code (so you don't have to trust my server with private key production).

I was making these back when bitcoins were about $3 a piece, so the smallest denomination is $0.01. If someone wants to tweak the code to go smaller, feel free to submit it up to github and I will update the site. Perhaps they should be printed in mBTC now with some special coloration to signify the change.

Would you be able to give some info on how the old coins were supposed to function, the denominations issued and the number minted. Am I right in thinking these are now redundant?

Can you give me a detailed breakdown of each edition you've minted with numbers for each and rough dates if you have them. Even better links to photos of each different edition if possible.

I'm planning to put some photos up for people to see the different types of physical crypto out there.

The only coin I've fully designed so far is the DIY quarter bitcoin which are labeled 2014 and went on sale December 17, 2013.
The previous editions were aluminum casascius coins that I loaded.

We started offering both private key and 2-factor authentication for Titan bitcoins at about coin number 200 in the edition for the Titan One.  That is an option for all of our coins.  

The Titan One Silver for 2013, minted in 1 oz of silver, is a separate edition and only 1,000 were produced.  We will sell these until Springtime before moving on to the 2014 edition.

The Titan One Gold, minted in 1 oz of gold, is available late January of 2014.  We're making those in batches of 100 and we're producing no more than 1000 for 2014.  

We're also offering 0.1 BTC, 0.25 BTC, 0.5 BTC, 5 BTC, and 10 BTC this year.  


Also, we did NOT sell 10,000 1 BTC coins in 2013.  I haven't added them up yet, but we'll be publishing the final mintage on our site.

Tim, to clarify: does that mean there are and will always be less than 10,000 coins dated 2013 in circulation or that 10,000 were minted and will eventually all be sold but they were not all sold within the window of 2013?

Thanks for this it looks very interesting. Can you tell me more about how the Embedded NFC tag security will work? What data does it provide?

Sure, the NFC tag will have the full public address and a confirmation code (10 alpha-numeric characters).  The full public address will be useful on its own because, as we currently see, FirstBits is non-operable on blockchain.info (unless they fixed that recently).

The confirmation code will be generated by hashing the public address and performing some trade secret set of other data destructive algorithms to come up with the 10 character code.  Nothing fancy, just increasing entropy.  So my app will ping my server with the full public address and the confirmation code and the server will perform the transformations and verify that the code provided is the same as the code generated.  Once verified it will ping other services like blockchain.info and bitcoinaverages so you get a nice "one sheet" of validity and value for the coin.

The security is mostly about verifying the coin is not a counterfeit but I put in a few more helpful functions.

So each time a coin generates a code is it the same or different?

My best explanation as to why there would be discrepancies in the two tracker sites has to do with the following:

1. I understand they scrape data from other sites and may not do it consistently, there could be bugs.
2. Although it's simple and straightforward to monitor an address for 1BTC to appear ("funded") and then to disappear ("spent"), there is likely to be differences between the way the two sites interpret balances on self-funded bars, the "roll-your-own" addresses I sold in the past, and the relatively frequent cases where people add extra funds to their coins, reload them after redeeming, or otherwise keep a non-zero balance on the addresses after opening them.

Does anyone have the front and back scans of a series 2 casascius 1BTC coin dated 2011? I could make a set of images up but would prefer to use a back with actual public key that's correct for that coin type.

Is there a more canonical dataset (that is easily human readable) than the two tracker sites? This listing is concerned with the coins that were minted, not with how many remain.

Did you mention having plans to make all the PDFs/images of your scanned coins publicly downloadable? I wanted to try get some images from your site too if you have.

Can anyone tell me more about the Casascius BTC – Loadable gold plated bar, 80mm x 40mm x 6mm, [n] minted, series 2 sticker stating "ZERO BTC"?

Hi all! Thought I’d share our coin to the list as well. Some on this forum have already purchased and waiting their dleivery now. It’s a buyer funded coin, gold plated (not solid gold) and it’s the only coin on the market with 2FA security password. So if it’s lost or stolen, it can’t be used without your password.

Your right, not a replacement for the excellent book by Elias, but it does mention Bitbills which were the very first before Casascius.

I know Elias will be adding Bitbills to his new updated Encyclopedia in the near future.

Thats correct.    Elias started doing a Casascius-only online version, then I believe started considering doing a comprehensive physical book in April '15.  I believe I joined the project a year later.   But it still took a while until the Encyclopedia was published.

This list is also what got me started in collecting physical bitcoins.   I owe my thanks to the OP.

I was excited to have my coins included on the list when it was made.  It definitely felt like a bit of a turning point at the time.
