Data theft occurs at several different levels online. First, your data can be stolen by hacking into your social network and email accounts. Secondly, your data can be phished using emails that appear to be from valid sources. Finally, your data can also be stolen by wiretapping/eavesdropping on your internet connection both via wire and wireless connections.
ETHEREAL (http://www.ethereal.com/) and WIRESHARK (http://www.wireshark.org/) provide criminals access to your network traffic whether on wired or wireless connections. These softwares are free and available for anyone to use and download with minimal computer knowledge.
Elcomsoft Wireless Security Auditor (http://www.elcomsoft.co.uk/ewsa.html) allows "network administrators" to verify how secure a company’s wireless network is by executing an audit of accessible wireless networks. Featuring patented cost-efficient GPU acceleration technologies, Elcomsoft Wireless Security Auditor attempts to recover the original WPA/WPA2-PSK text passwords in order to test how secure your wireless environment is.

If the VM is going to connect to the internet yes.  Malware/Spyware is more common than viruses in most cases.  Malwarebytes is what I typically use.

CCleaner to clean the browser cache

NoScript addon for Firefox

COMODO as a firewall

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to scan infected computer

Spybot - Search & Destroy for trojan/keyloger

Most free antivus are good then : Avast, AVG, Avira, Panda Cloud, NOD32

No, I'm asking you to define what you mean by dodgy and how we can know something is dodgy.

Basically everything that contain illegal content especially illegal pornography, cracking software, key-generator,...
Also streaming websites are fucking dodgy. I keep saying it, don't watch streaming online for movies/series.

Every time money is involved, every time you are asked personal informations.
Facebook is dodgy. People should stop using that shit.

Have to go, will update later.

Some of those site may not appear dodgy. And you can get viruses that are from seemingly legit sites or sources.

My preference is for Kaspersky or F-Secure because they don't seem too memory or processor intensive. They both consistently perform well in customer views and the top consumer mags.

there is no such thing as "the best antivirus" for example of course ESET nod is better then Avira but then again Avira is free and you have to pay for ESET (unless you're a pirate :D ) and ESET takes more of your RAM and processing power when Avira is so easy on your GPU :)

There are so many details on different antiviruses that every individual would probably have a different "best" for himself

Title: Re: best antivirus

different "best" for himself

Data protection is bigger issue, than virus/malware removal, after your Data is violated.

Also, obviously most viruses are written for Windows OS's, so a Linux distro with a AV and firewall would be best, but many of us don't want to use Linux on our home PC's (myself included).

When using windows throughout the years I've always found Malwarebytes anti-malware to be the best anti virus program.
It's free unless you want to pay for the 'full' version, but it doesn't get you much more than the free version.
Easy to use, both for protection and scanning. You can find them at; https://www.malwarebytes.org

It's not a anti-virus program, it only scans for malware. Make sure you also have a anti-virus software and of course a firewall too.

Whenever I've used it there has been a protection option avaliable, which actively detects sketchy websites and downloads, doesn't that qualify as a anti-virus?

Let's all just settle this with Eset NOD32. As loads of other people have also suggested this, it shows that it must be pretty damn awesome. Plus, when you're "far out" in the internet for a long time, you'll realise it's the best around.

But it scans these downloads for malware, it does not do the main function of an anti-virus software programm, which is to scan for and remove/quarantine viruses from your hard drive(s) and downloads. It just scans for malware.
