Title: Open Video Conference & Bitcoin This Weekend in NYC- Mozilla Foundation
Post by: Yankee (BitInstant) on September 06, 2011, 09:26:20 PM
Hey All,

I wanted everyone to be aware that Bitcoin IS being discussed as a viable option for business's all over the world.

Specifically, this weekend is OVC11 in New York City which is run by the Mozilla Foundation (yeh, the guys behind Firefox )and the New York Law School
Open Video Conference is a two-day confab of people working on technology, policy, and creative dimensions of open video. This year's event takes place this weekend, September 10-12 in New York City.

They running a working group on alternative currencies (e.g. Bitcoin) and invited myself and BitInstant (www.BitInstant.com (http://www.BitInstant.com)) to attend the conference working group and many others as well!
The goal of this working group is to prototype web-layer technologies to facilitate micropayments for creatives. We have an interesting group forming, including reps from outside the BitCoin/crypto community.

From their website: http://openvideoconference.org/alternative-currencies-and-transaction-models/

Quote
In recent months, there has been huge progress in infrastructure for micropayments. With Bitcoin bursting in on the scene, and Flattr gaining momentum in micro-donations, it is easier than ever before to imagine a button in your browser that donates $1 to a YouTube video, attaches money to an e-mail, or gives $0.01 to every piece of journalism you read. The goal for this session is to survey new opportunities like these, decide on the best first steps and (coming out of the session) take them.

If anyone would like to attend, let me know personally so I can bring you in as a Bitcoin aficionado.
Day: Saturday 9/10/11
Room: W320
Time: 2:30pm – 5:30pm

Streaming content, micro-payments, and bitcoin. Sounds like Mozilla can make a big play here.

Fantastic! I received a few PM's from members in/around nyc who want to attend, this is going to be a great event.

The beauty of this is that its run by companies outside the Bitcoin community, so I hope the media and everyone who follows the event can look at it more objectively

Streaming content, micro-payments, and bitcoin. Sounds like Mozilla can make a big play here.

Thats the plan, I spoke to the event organizer yesterday and he tells me that Mozilla is looking to have a leg up on their competition. A well liked idea for videos/blogs/journalism is micropyament and tipping, what better currency to take advantage of than Bitcoin!
It could be a big step into the main stream economy.

During this weekend, a big goal will be meeting, getting the ideas, and convincing some of the CEO's and VP's who will be there to not be afraid of Bitcoin and furthermore how to properly value it.
Its a large list! http://openvideoconference.org/people/

Awesome... any change there will be video of this?

Theres a webcast of the keynote speakers and events, but not for the individual sessions.
Someone from this community who asked to attend mentioned he will bring a pro photographer though!

...Any chance the media will pay attention?

YES!!!!
Dont forget, this conference is not just about Bitcoin, it covers a large general subject.
In addition, the keynote speakers are from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Internet Archive, New America and more!

Very cool Yankee. Thanks for mentioning it.

Your welcome  :D

There's still time to attend, shoot me a PM to get you started!

I'll confirm this; Bit Navigator will be there to cover this session like we did with the NYC Bitcoin Conference(http://bitcoinnavigator.com/section/blog/); we'll be live twitting from the place.

@Charlie, let me know if you need any help with the live blogging department, since we have similar plans.

Some really great ideas came out of yesterday's session and great minds came together.

It was cool spending the day with Mt.Gox, Bitcoin Navigator, Flattr, Mozilla, Google, that Marijuana advocator dude, Bruce Wagner and everyone else who came out.

Things are being put together fast and you will all see some BIG news and changes in the Bitcoin community very soon.

Thanks to moot (Christopher Pool) founder of 4chan for letting me brief him on Bitcoin and discuss some ideas.

I have some pictures, but I'd like to get the people in the pictures permission before I post them.
You should also see a nice writeup soon.
Here are some notes from the session, http://openetherpad.org/ovc11-alternative-currencies

Also feel free to ask any question regarding the session since Yifu Guo is also working on a article.
