Title: Bounty for translations of the Bitcoin article in Wikipedia [upto 23 BTC]
Post by: cw on March 18, 2011, 12:25:36 PM
Edit(by eMansipater):  this bounty is now in transition.  I am trying to verify the bounties which we fell behind on and transition the bounty to a new thread, as well as get a second person to have access to the account so that we won't get stuck in a situation like we did with this one.  As I noted a few pages in here, the new thread will probably have an adjusted formula to reflect the increased value of bitcoins, and we are also in need of donations to continue awarding bounties as once pending bounties are paid we will be a little bit low(the donation address below is still current).  The number one way people can help right now is by reviewing the existing translations (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=4599.msg114642#msg114642) and letting us know what shape they are in so that past bounties can be fully paid out.  Then once that is done I will launch the new thread/formula and we can continue incentivising this crucial work.

------------------------------------------------Original message follows------------------------------------
This is a bounty for Wikipedia translations of the Bitcoin article. Please, read all the instructions and remarks.

IMPORTANT: Currently, we have enough bitcoins to fund 2 new translations (and some payments are pending). Please, send bitcoins to 1FDP9PT2R4vnQNWx17Yv4k2d2otZAUaoj2 so we can fund more translations. If you are going to start a new translation, keep in mind that we cannot guarantee a reward until we receive more donations!

The process is:

  • If you are not registered in Wikipedia, do it. Edit your Wikipedia user page and add your Bitcoin forum's nick.
  • Translate the English Bitcoin article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin) to your own language.
  • Adapt it to the style guidelines of your Wikipedia edition (format, reference and template styles and other conventions).
  • Keep a local copy of the source of the article. Just in case it gets deleted.
  • Notify here your translation and your Wikipedia username.
  • Wait for people in the forum to review and some time for other Wikipedia editors to see the article.
  • Rewards for translations completed by more than 1 person will be distributed on a best-effort and good faith basis. Participants will do their best to agree on the distribution themselves.

A valid translation should be fully adapted to each Wikipedia edition. That includes:
  • Proper grammar. Google Translations are NOT valid!
  • Fixing every template (and adding any extra template the Wikipedia edition has for software, currencies or anything applicable.
  • Removing internal links that lead to unexistant articles.
  • Add internal links to relevant existant articles if applicable.
  • Use proper categories for the Wikipedia edition.
  • Comply with any other guideline that the Wikipedia edition has.

There is a fixed bounty for each translation depending of the number of articles in each language. People might pledge extra bitcoins for specific languages. The base bounty is 4·log10 n where n is the number of articles.

Finally, Do you think the current version of the English Bitcoin article is good enough to use it as the source for translations? If it's not, what would you improve?

You might deposit bitcoins for the bounty in the following address: 1FDP9PT2R4vnQNWx17Yv4k2d2otZAUaoj2. This is a MyBitcoin.com account. I can give access to it to a couple of trusted people in this forum.

Funds and pledges:

  • eMansipater - 70 BTC (in deposit)
  • theymos - 25 BTC (in deposit)
  • da2ce7 - 25 BTC (in deposit)
  • cw - 13.25 BTC (in deposit)
  • noagendamarket - 7.08 BTC (in deposit)

I guess the prize should be according to the number of speakers of the language. I would pledge 0.5 btc for the fund.

What about Nefario's students? I don't know if they have enough English background, but it might pay some "company" handsomely.

Impossible to quantify. I propose instead doing it by the number of Wikipedia articles in that language (Wikipedia stats page shows this).

Then the base bounty for any language could be K·log10 n where K is a constant and n the number of articles. So, if K = 4, then:

  • ~500,000 articles = 22 BTC (Japanese, Italian)
  • ~300,000 articles = 21 BTC (Chinese)
  • ~100,000 articles = 20 BTC (Danish, Arab)
  • ~10,000 articles = 16 BTC (Afrikaans, Icelandic, etc.)
  • ~1,000 articles = 11 BTC
  • ~100 articles = 8 BTC

People could pledge more bitcoins for a specific language. How does this look like?

What's the formula to convert the number of articles into BTC?

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/pt/w/index.php?title=Bitcoin&oldid=24461273 Same nickname as here.

I only did the translation, didn't touch the styling nor fixed any templates nor anything, but the bulk of the work is done.

Btw, If you are gonna give me some money for this, i would rather if you waited a bit, my computer holding my wallet is down and i wanna feel the rush of checking the bitcoin client every few minutes to see when the money comes (i'm hoping to buy a new one in these next few weeks, my current machine has been around long enough and issues it is presenting are so serious it's more worth buying a new machine and transplanting the data instead of trying to repair the current one, even if it could be repaired it would still remain too unreliable at best)

Great! I expect translations to be fully adapted. That includes:

  • Fixing every template (and adding any extra template the Portuguese Wikipedia has for software, currencies or anything applicable.

What's the formula to convert the number of articles into BTC?

In this case, with 678099 articles: 4·log10 678099 = 23.325 BTC + any extra amount people want to pledge.

It is hard to say for a partial work. The only thing I can think about is that, if full translation is made by more than one person, they should agree on percentage with mediation from me and the rest of the community.

I think it is finished now, with infoboxes for software and currency, more or less fixed references, categories, etc. What do you think about saving 3 BTC for other translations (because of the infobox work, etc.)? Then, it'd be 20.235 BTC for you.

I just donated 20 BTC.  I will match further pledges made to this thread (and fulfilled) before end of day Sunday March 27, up to 50 BTC total.  So if anyone was on the hedge about donating, just donate at least a portion of the amount you were considering, and it will go twice as far.

Actually, now i'm thinking more about this, i would rather wait till at least a couple people that feel confident in both languages approves my work, who knows, i might have made some big mistakes.... Also, i guess it would probably be fair to discount a couple BTC from my prize 'cause i keep finding typos on my translation even after having re-read it several times, these things have a way to sneak by unoticed somtimes....

Fair enough. Then we can wait a bit and give people (and yourself) to an opportunity to review it and get some reward if they make any substantial improvement. We can establish this as the standard procedure for further translations to other languages too.

Well, i fully translated Polish wikipedia page, but there wasn't a bounty at the time.
Thanks for adding me to the list, cw.

Also, i think that it would be good idea to make somebody more trusted such as theymos, Kiba, Gavin or Noagendamarket hold the money.
No offense there cw, but you just registered.

Thanks niooron and theymos, I've donated 25.5 as well since I can see both of your transactions in the blockchain.  Ironically enough, I can't see my own there--probably because it was mybitcoin->mybitcoin.  Sent the 25.5 from the client instead to counter this.  Still 24.5 to be matched!

I have fixed some templates, categories, etc. It still needs some improvements:
  • In the reference, translate all date strings (there are names of months in English).
  • When references are in English, you have to add the attribute "idioma=inglés" to the cite template.

Finished the full translation of the spanish version. Someone else had done the first paragraph, maybe they are around.

Also, some sentences do not look natural, they need more adaptation to sound Spanish. There are also a good number of missing accents and other typos. Still needs more review (either by you or others).

Personally I found the English article to be quite lacking. I'm not sure you get a good understanding of how exactly Bitcoin actually work from reading it. It also contains a lot of repetitions. I also think the article needs to push the economic aspects a bit more and be a bit more self-critical. Right now it's mostly about the tech, which is, to most people, rather uninteresting.

Yes. I didn't expect the translation bounty to take off so quickly. So that these kind of things could be pointed out. We should improve the English article and, probably, start a bounty here for funding a bounty on Wikipedia's Reward Board. That would get some experienced Wikipedians to work on it.

Yeah, I just noticed. I don't think it's so much the grammar (hopefully) as it is the use of some English expressions and such, which is really hard to avoid when it comes to technology in general. I'll look over the article more closely during the weekend.

Great. So after you review it, you can drop a message in Imperto's Discussion page (http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anv%C3%A4ndardiskussion:Imperto) and ask him to check again. If he has any further objections, he should point you some specific (and reasonable) examples. Otherwise, you (or he) should remove the "{{språkvård||månad=2011-03}}" template and you will be ready to get the bounty.

If you have any doubt about policies or how to interact with other Wikipedia editors, you can ask me, either in this thread or via PM.

Instead of waiting forever until translations are 100% perfect, which makes no sense since we have a lot to improve (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4945.0) in the original English article, I'll start rewarding the bounty now for those who have provided a decent (or better) translation. At the moment, that means everyone. If someone makes further improvements, specially after the English article gets better, and the translation turns out to be a really good article... then it would be time to reward some extra bitcoins.

So, these are the rewards:
  • TiagoTiago. Portuguese. 4·log10 678890 = 23.327. Sent to 1FmvtS66LFh6ycrXDwKRQTexGJw4UWiqDX.
  • foxmulder. Indonesian. 4·log10 158104 = 20.796. Sent to 1Cxa2JZ1CE4DUSLtg3j7xaNBNiqjbjQtcG.
  • niooron. Spanish. 4·log10 742798 = 23.483. Sent to 1HFFY7CtnXGceMvv9a6AQNTgyAu9ySd3Mb.

Bounty received, thank you. I've rewritten parts of the Swedish article during the weekend, brushed up the references and changed some of the overall structure etc. I've also had some suggestions on how to improve the grammar from two Wikipedians which I think I've dealt with. Hopefully the grammar flag will be removed in the near future.

Hi, it's true that I forgot to put on the external links altogether. Working on the small details makes one forget the larger ones :)

I added some own contributions at some places, I'll try to see if these spots could be better written on the original English article. Also, wikifying is important, to add some wiki links to various words and concepts. Work-in-progress :)

At least the amount of translations of the original article is slowly improving!

I added External links and also the relevant categories that I found used in the articles of other sw pieces ... I think the article is now more or less useful for new entrants to Bitcoin, who don't have a good reading comprehension in English... That could include my mom. :)

I looked at your translation and it seems it's a literal translation from the english article. I did the same thing - it would be very much a difficult task to create an altogether new version. But I can't judge the quality of your translation since I only speak swedish :)

let's wait and see if there are still any bounties available ...

Actual work in progress: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin
I plan to complete it soon.

Of course tips are very welcome  :D

No idea whether or not there's anybody paying bounties for translations anymore. I did a finnish translation two weeks ago, but haven't seen any bounty. But for me, it's more important to do my own contribution to the common good (i.e. spread the bitcoin gospel :) and an actual bounty would just be the icing on the cake :)

just my 0.02 cents.

A friend introduced me to this system here and seeing as I know Bulgarian aswell as English, I want to ask how much would English to Bulgarian translations be worth here?

Edit: I am currently translating the Bitcoin page in Bulgarian, feel free to check on my progress.

I am nearly done with this, please share your opinions and also please no bad comments as I am VERY new to wikipedia so I may have some errors here and there.

Edit 2: I am done, please use the adress above to check and see if everything checks out

I'm sorry If I've made any mistakes and stuff which show as errors or don't appear, this is my very first time using Wikipedia to edin/create an article so its understandable that I wont be perfect with no experience whatsoever

Appreciate it, cw!  I will be starting a new thread so that I can update the OP.  Before I do, can we get a conclusive list on as-yet-unpaid bounties?

I see:
Finnish by Topi,
Italian by Dusty,
Bulgarian by Smothier,
Norwegian by carlerha/Calle
and an offer by jcbrand to do Afrikaans.

How many of these have been reviewed by a native speaker?  I can review for structure/appearance but don't speak these five languages.

Also, I would like to give someone else access to the account in addition to myself--in case I were to be hit by a bus, etc.  Theymos is tied for second-highest donor but also has a lot on his plate.  da2ce7, are you interested?

I don't even know if any norwegians other than me are reading this thread; however, the article has been left alone by the wikipedia patrollers through 7 revisions so far since I first created it almost a month ago, indicating it's in decent shape linguistically. As far as the technical soundness goes, the article is, as topi points out, a direct translation from the english one, so the errors are very few or none. I'll see if I can find someone to check the article. Meanwhile:

Hvis du er norsk og leser dette hadde det vært hyggelig om du ville sett over: http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin

Sorry to be the party pooper but the Bulgarian translation is just some automatic engine translation, even basic mistakes are not corrected and it has random english words and senteces left.It is useless and maybe damaging because it will leave bad taste in mouth for anybody who doesn't really know anything about bitcoin.

Sorry for the delay folks--I have been trying to track down some contacts who can review the other languages.  Expect the launch of the new thread soon.

In the meantime, what would those potentially eligible for the bounty think about gifting back a portion of their winnings to continue the fund?  I am thinking with the rise in value I should change the formula to increase the number of bounties we can award, and am curious to hear both the answer to this question as well as comments on the idea from the other contributors.

I'm willing to give up 10% of my bounty to fund translations. It's not much, but again my total BTC-holding is very low, and a big part of the incentive to work on the article was the coins. I also think the initially agreed upon bounties should be payed before you recalculate when starting a new thread. People seem to stick to this customary even for large amounts: http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2072.0

To strengthen the bounty balance, I encourage the wealthier people in the community to help spread the word of Bitcoin by funding more translations.

Great work people, but keep in mind that as the OP says continuing bounties can't be guaranteed until we get more donations--there are already enough claims to exhaust the fund if they are all granted.  Translations made after I've taken over will likely fall under the purview of a new bounty formula based on increased bitcoin value, and some bounty winners may elect to re-contribute a little bit since bitcoins have gone up so much.  If you want to help accelerate this process, help me find people to review Finnish, Italian, etc. (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=4599.msg114642#msg114642)

Feedback seems to be that Bulgarian needs a little bit more work.  The purpose of this bounty is to encourage quality translations, so I definitely appreciate your work on this Smothier, but we need to keep the bar high.  If you can get it to the level where fluent Bulgarian speakers give it a solid review you are still in line for a bounty.  Perhaps you can find someone who will help you and then split it with you?

Would you accept an Esperanto translation? It is a real language and it has its own Wikipedia, but some people have ideological difficulties with it and don't consider it a language.

Ĉu vi akceptus unu Esperanttradukon? Ĝis unu fakta lingvon kaj ĝi havos ĝis posedos Vikipedio, escepte kelkaj homojn havos malideologifacilaj kaj nerigardindie ĝi unu lingvo.

I think that since there are so few native speakers of Esperanto, and even fewer people who would be unable to learn of BitCoin unless there were an Esperanto article, that it's probably not in keeping with what this bounty is designed for.  The point is to make sure as many people as possible have access to information about BitCoin.

It would still be really cool to have one, though!  Maybe I should try and get one done up for Lojban.  Don't forget, people, you can also chip in for a specific language if you really want to see an article for it.

As mentioned above (https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=4599.msg134635#msg134635) and referenced in the OP the fund does not currently have enough donations for more awards.  When the new thread and formula are launched hopefully we will be able to keep incentivising translations.

What is the point of holding the translation ransom?

I don't understand what this means.  According to this post (https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=4599.msg73563#msg73563) and the blockchain, your bounty was paid out to 1FmvtS66LFh6ycrXDwKRQTexGJw4UWiqDX (http://blockexplorer.com/address/1FmvtS66LFh6ycrXDwKRQTexGJw4UWiqDX) .  As far as the others, I am still waiting for them to be reviewed by speakers of those languages before I can award bounties, and launch the new thread/formula with a correct balance (if any).  Work on this has slowed because I'm not on the forums much right now (https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=12030.0).

Actually it isn't an exact translation of the English article as I found that kinda confusing and illogically structured, so I restructured it quite a bit. I am not really sure if it is any better now this way, but I hope it is still acceptable.
