Title: Help wanted: Translations
Post by: Gavin Andresen on October 08, 2011, 09:10:42 PM
Good news: I'm just about to get a Bitcoin-Qt version 0.5 Release Candidate 1 out, with a much-improved GUI.

Bad news: all the translations for the old wxWidgets Bitcoin are obsolete, and the process for making translations is different.

Is anybody willing to write new translations?  Here's what you'll need to know:

  • Three translations already exist: de nl and ru.
  • Translations are stored in ".ts" files in the src/qt/locale folder (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/src/qt/locale/)
  • The 'QT Linguist (http://doc.qt.nokia.com/latest/linguist-manual.html)' tool can be used to create translations
  • ... or maybe an online tool like Transifex could/should be used to crowd-source the work

And is anybody willing to take the job of coordinating translation efforts, figuring out if Transifex is a good tool to use, and writing some documentation to make it easy for people to create and submit new translations?

I would help by doing the spanish translation  :)

For windows use Qt Linguist (http://qt-apps.org/content/show.php/Qt+Linguist+Download?content=89360) and if you use deb-Ubuntu like I do you could install same tool from the official repos with
Code:
sudo apt-get install qt4-dev-tools

EDIT: translation submitted on github

EDIT2: I managed to create a project page on crowdin.net (http://crowdin.net/project/bitcoin-qt-gui) but they give us unlimited access only for 10 days (trial) like all the other platforms. I have the time and ability to manage the translations project if it's needed but i can't pay the fees for a bigger than one translation plan.

I started this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=47473.0) in the scandinavian forum for coordinating the Swedish translation. If noone else is interested I will probably do it myself but I can't say for sure when that will be.

figuring out if Transifex is a good tool to use
You should also give a look at these two:

MultiBit uses Crowdin for its localization, and it is very slick and useful. Used it to translate MultiBit to Swedish.

Is it possible to add Hebrew to the list at https://www.transifex.net/projects/p/bitcoin/ ?

Will there be any problem accommodating a right-to-left language?

anybody willing answer few noob translation questions?
I'm halfway done with a new language but would like to check some things first (lang code, special characters in the strings),

edit: at the time of writing the OP I finished 90 % of a new language for the QT and need advice how to enter tags, which tags are allowed, which tags are reserved and how to not translate variable names, what are the local conventions.
come on! I'm not asking for a loan here.

dear community, I would like to file a progress report on the new language support I started 4 weeks ago.

there was absolutely no progress on the 90+ % ready new language.
I posted a question with fairly reasonable question how to treat the special characters in the translation strings back then (things like n% d% and stuff) and what other noob catches are there that I needed to get answer to finish that job.

I am dissapoint from the roaring silence but also kind of relieved from dropping this commitment to finish the translation.
maybe next time. sorry for giving up so quickly.

First of all: thank you for the effort of starting a new translation, and sorry that you did not get a reply. I believe updates to a stickied thread are fairly invisible; i didn't notice it until now.

I'm not sure what you mean by tags, but considering your question below: the translated string should be as similar to the english one as possible. If the english one had a %s or %n or %d, it means that is going to be replaced by a number or another string, and you should have such a %d/%n as well in the translation.

I wouldn't mind the Danish translations. I have a lot of spare time and find myself bored ^^

I've completed a Hebrew translation on Transifex.

Is any further action required to have it included in the next version?

Is there some way I can preview it before it's included in the next version?

How can Japanese be added to this list?
Took me a while to figure out, but apparently you need to log in, go to https://www.transifex.net/projects/p/bitcoin/resource/tx/ (note: This is a different link from what paraipan gave, where there is a different option that doesn't work), and click "Add New Translation".
