Title: XFX 5830 cooling before and after Post by: pandemic on October 21, 2011, 11:26:13 PM So I've got a 2nd gen XFX 5830 with the 5 heat pipe cooler and a 1st gen XFX 5830 with the 2 pipe cooler.
Right now they're both running at 958/300 and they both get about 305-307mh/s. 1st gen is at 100% fan speed and 2nd gen is at 50% Right now the 1st gen is at 72.5c and the 2nd gen is at 64c. I'm going to let it run for a while and then see what the temps are then. After that I'm going to replace the cooler with a new one that XFX sent (current one is sometimes not running right) and I'll put arctic silver on to see the difference. I'll try to keep ambient temps the same. Doors/windows are shut. edit: 1st gen is at 100% fan speed, 307mh/s and 69.5C 2nd gen is at 60% fan speed, 307mh/s and 59.5C Going to do arctic silver swap now. put the new OEM fan on with artic silver 1st gen is at 100% fan speed, 306mh/s and 66C 2nd gen is at 60% fan speed, 306mh/s and 59C In summary, I guess arctic silver helps a bit... but not much. Adding 3 more heat pipes would help a lot more. Meaning you won't get the full effect from AS5 for a full 300 hours. If you're running a stock xfx fan at 100%, your gonna burn up/seize that fan in no time. Most of us run between 65-80% speed of the fans to keep them living. Just a few suggestions. What's the safe temp range, under 80c? Does this statement apply to all xfx fans or only the ones on 5830s? I'm pretty sure that goes for almost all fans @ 100% continuous use. I wouldn't be so abusive if I didn't have the lifetime warranty.

After market coolers with after market fans, you can oil the bearing and run them fans 100% all the time. Just these stock fans are junk and fragile I guess you can say. does anyone know where I can get replacement fans from, I can't find any here in the UK and i don't want to get a full aftermarket cooler unless they are under £10. I don't mind ordering from abroard aslong as they are cheap If you still have the warranty on your name, fill out a ticket form at xfx, they most likely will mail off a new fan to you, they mailed me like 5 of em, and each of em just ended up dieing within weeks. I ended up taking off the plastic shield and fan, wire tied a 120mm fan to the hs. You won't really be screwed, dunno y I said that... But, attaching a 120mm fan to the hs if the stock fan goes would be suffice. Oiling them increases the life of the fan if it can be oiled. I've got a few 4 year old 120mm fan, when I found that guide, I opened them 4 y/o fans up, they were bone dry. Make sure air flow also hits the memory heatsinks. I was gonna post a photo of mine, camera is dead, I'll post a photo as a reference in a day, if you like. |
