Title: Antminer S1 solo mining, how?
Post by: bitspender on March 02, 2014, 05:52:55 PM
Hey guys,

So, i'm running 4Th (20pcs) Antminer S1's. I just like to try for 30 days to solo mine with them  ;D
How do i make the setup? I've read that you need to point your miners to 127.0.0.1, but does a standalone miner have this?

Can somebody explain me what's the best way to solo mine using a standalone (20x) device?

Thank you

First, a bit of a warning, no one solo mines anymore unless you have a giant pool because the amount of hashing power needed to mine a block right now.  Not taking "luck" into consideration, 4Th will take you over 45 days to get a block.

Here's a decent solo mining setup guide: http://maunderingcabal.blogspot.com/2013/02/bitcoin-mining-log-9-how-to-solo-mine.html
You basically point your asic miners to your system running bitcoin-qt

Thank you, just what i needed.

Do not miss the 'luck' factor. On my miner statistics, i have 2 found blocks already.
So why not try to run solo, even if it takes 45 days, no pool in the world gives me 25btc in 45 days

It takes 45 days on average.
If you're out of luck, it can take forever

Well, on the other hand, i'm getting about 0.4/day now.
If i just keep mining during another 65 days, i'll have my 25btc  ;D

With difficulty included, let's say 100 days or so

.. and the loss of the btc that .4 while u are off solo mining. also don't forget to add a node to the config to keep your miner up2date on the rest of the network , so you don't wind up mining old data.

Do you have your miners in a datacenter or are you just running them out of your home?  Curious because I just ordered 6 and possible may want more later.

2 blocks in how long? Since the time to find a block is an average, for everyone you find under that average you're equally as likely to go over than average.

everyone here just wants you mining on their pools! there is absolutely no help for any real solo mining!

I have 10 antminer U1's and am trying to get them to Solo mine using a stratum proxy to my bitcoind so I can see their progress - if you got yours set up please PM me and let me know how!

Why do you need a stratum proxy?
Just point them to your local PC running bitcoin!

main reason is so you can see that they are working :) ... but also for higher speed devices like BE Cube from what i have seen bitcoind is too slow so you loose 1/2 the blocks without a proxy in place ?

I have some block erupter cubes that I am solo mining PPC with just for the heck of it.  You just need to start the wallet in server mode and then run your mining software in proxy mode.  My cubes seem to work pretty well but the couple of times I tried running any of my antminers I get a lot of errors.  My understanding is that the client/PC are too slow but I could be mistaken.  I didn't bother with it too much on the S1's because I don't have enough of them to really solo mine and can't afford to lose the revenue they are generating pooled.

Best of luck!

In my experience, while my miners report mining at their usual 180 ghs, there is something not connecting even with ports opened and valves on full steam, my butterflies actually solo mine quite well, and a usb cube would be similar, but I don't think for the antminers my computer is capable of providing the getwork info it needs in a timely fashion, which is I believe why they added stratum with mining pools.

So in short, if you want to solo mine, you'll need to setup a pool with stratum with your computer or on a cloud (don't ask me how to do either, as I've succumb to just paying the damned 2%).

I have been looking into this but it seems like you need to modify it in order to not connect you to the p2pool network..
https://github.com/Rav3nPL/p2pool-rav/blob/master/README.md

I seen one mod of the python script out there but I have not got a chance to fully play with it… I did set this up and it works we on OSX even thought it shows no support for OSX.. I also did a direct connect to bitcoind however the reject rate is SO high I just can't make that recommendation .. If you find anything, please keep this thread updated..

We have tried solo mining SHA-256 altcoins and we can't seem to make it work.  The wallet shows connection and hashrate but no work gets done.

P2pool has nothing to do with solo mining.  You don't need to modify any python script from rav3ns code to get it to run on OSX either.

If you want to solo mine and your bitcoind can't feed your miners quickly enough put a stratum proxy in between and point your miners to it.

What about just using Bitsolo (http://bitsolo.net/) directly?

Or you can try this. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=519782.msg5814397#msg5814397

There's a couple different threads on setting up a private pool using eloipool.  I was just able to get it set up and running. It still needs a couple tweaks, but for internal it seems to be feeding my 12 Anminer S1 just fine.

Here's the links I used:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=158105.0

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=495542.0

They both will get you 95% there.  Just be sure to watch and change where your directories are located.

I have all my S1's solo mining fine against just the standard bit coin-QT config and do not seem to have any issues… Is there a reason why the same steps do not work for the S2 ? as soon as I config the S2 and restart, the thing starts beeping and will never start hashing against bit coin core ? is there extra steps for the S2 ?

You are my hero if this is true because i can't get my S1's to solo for shit.  I have 4 BE Cubes that work flawlessly but cannot get the S1's to work.  I would love to see a screen shot of one of your S1's Status page..maybe it will light bulb me into figuring this out.

I am also trying to setup my own pool but that looks like a bitch too in Windows and I haven't gotten up to setting up ubuntu again yet.

edit:
tried running the wallet in server mode on a faster computer and now I'm even more confused because the S1 is doing something that I thought was not possible.
The Getworks for my local wallet are skyrocketed...46,450 in under 20 minutes.
Still no Accepted or rejected shares and the Last Share time is never.

The really weird thing is that it looks like it's also connected to the other two pools I have configured and one of them is Guild, which I am showing 23Ghs at right now and submitting shares.  I thought they couldn't connect to multiple pools at the same time but how is it possible for my S1 to be throwing 23ghs to Guild and the rest to parts unknown?

Sounds like you have it running correctly.  If your bitcoind (qt) can't supply work fast enough, it gets some from other pools.  Mine did the same thing when I tried using just bitcoind.  That's why I set up a pool.  I haven't got brave enough to run more than a few s1 units on it yet to play around with, but it seems to be working.

bgi yea that's the problem though....I've got 11 of these things and if just one floods the client machine there's no way I'd get all 11 to work.  I have scoured the internet multiple times and just can't seem to find a good solution.  It seems strange too given that in the beginning solo mining was all there was and lots of folks tout all the benefits of decentralized mining, etc. but to do it with anything more than a few USBs is such a nightmare.

I agree.  I'm hoping(wishing) that bfgminer will one day a built in pool ability and all we'd have to do is supply the db and bitcoind. Although it has so many features, it might already have it in it. :)

Just mine in a pool and earn the money and keep it. If you really want to play the lotto, just use 20% of your BTC and go buy some lotto tickets. On the long run this will make you money and give you a chance at that big winning day.

Mining bitcoin solo with S1 does not make any sense. Look here https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty (https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty) and make calculations. To have chance to mine one block per month You would need more than 68 THs.

So, i'm running 4Th (20pcs) Antminer S1's. I just like to try for 30 days to solo mine with them  Grin
How do i make the setup? I've read that you need to point your miners to 127.0.0.1, but does a standalone miner have this?

Can somebody explain me what's the best way to solo mine using a standalone (20x) device?

Thank you

Ok... with 4THs chances are much better... You will wait for a block only 17 months... As I have said. No sense in that.
But... if You are really interested in how to mine solo with S1, You have more possibilities. Use ckolivas pool, or, and it is pretty more interesting, maintain own server with bitcoind running, then just ssh into each S1 unit, edit /etc/init.d/cgminer script adding --btc-address option and do other staff, probably also replace cgminer binary and then debug and run it and pray
good luck

Thank you, just what i needed.

Do not miss the 'luck' factor. On my miner statistics, i have 2 found blocks already.
So why not try to run solo, even if it takes 45 days, no pool in the world gives me 25btc in 45 days

It takes 45 days on average.
If you're out of luck, it can take forever

It's like the lottery, basically. :)

If you're out of luck, it can take forever

It's like the lottery, basically. :)

the same way You was lucky You can be later unlucky

Uhh it seems like an absolute mission to get solo mining working with independent miners.

to mine coins solo is not so difficult. there are many tools helping doing that. unfortunatelly the reason for doing it is what is the problem. if amount of coins You can get soon is near to zero than it does not make any sense.
if the whole bitcoin network hashpower is 300 PHs and amount of blocks mined per day is 144, then to get atleast 1 block per day to see it works You would need to have Your own 2 PHs. if You want to mine solo with 4 THs to see coins falling quickly into wallet mine solo asiccoin for example to learn.

mining.securepayment.cc - You get 97% of the block reward.

Just pray you don't get an orphan... if you find one with only one S1.

i think the op, and every other person that visits this thread is trying to get their antminers1 to solo, not mine at a solo pool or hear how impossible it is. you read that crap every where. i have tried repeatedly to get my ants to solo to no avail, I have had it get work but it ends up rejecting work sent to the wallet even when trying to mine a super low difficulty coin. The best solo mining info for the AntS1 is here:
Code:

and isnt the point of bitcoin decentralization? wouldnt solo mining contribute to decentralization more so than pooled mining?

Hey does anyone know the best way to solo mine with an s1 ?
Point it at my solo pool:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=763510.0

I am currently pointing an old S1 to this pool and crossing my fingers, according the address it seems to either have gotten donations or some users have actually hit.
Good luck! As the topic says the pool's solved 27 blocks so far.
