I don't think this is the start of the rally. I think we will be up and down in between $500 and $700 throughout the next month or so. Here's hoping I am wrong, though!

-- These 3 posts were made AT 400 --

Large buying activity on stamp in 200-400 blocks. Walls getting demolished. Looks like bottom.

Just think 2 months ago when btc was trading at $1000 and all the tiger direct, overstock, etc. was happening (now there is even more adoption than then).  If someone told you... in 2 months from now, you'll be able to buy at $400/btc on bitstamp, but DONT DO IT, because mtgox will be closed.  What would you think?

This is probably a good of a time as any to just make a long term investment in bitcoin or at least take a starter position (with money you can afford to lose) and then look away from it. It might go lower than this but if btc survives then it will probably be back above these levels rather quickly. Then you might have missed not only the bottom but this level also, and you'll feel really dumb. It might even be better than the risks involved with having fiat on exchanges at this point. If bitcoin REALLY crumbles then the exchanges might go down with it and youll have nothing.  Also withdraw enough fiat so you can have a comfortable life and be satisfied with your winnings in the event  that that bitcoin does crumble. I'm thinking of perhaps allocating as follows:
40% cold storage.
20% fiat on exchanges.
40% withdrawal (20% fiat and 20% gold)

---

Then later...

Thankfully there are things I can OBJECTIVELY look at. Either this was bottom or we are 1 step away from it.

Here's the evidence I have so far that 400 was (probably) bottom:
1. The VOLUME: Bitstamp did 118K BTC of volume in a day. This type of volume hasn't been seen since the bottom in December. Huobi also did a record volume of >300K but Huobi might be irrelevant.
2. The trends support this being possible bottom: including the horizontal support at 380 and the long term logarithmic support somewhere between 300 and 500 (each of us have a different opinion about where this trend is).
3. The order book: The bitstamp order book now looks like a monster of giant continuous bidwalls against a tiny ask. Everything is consistent and there are no more 'cliffs' for the price to fall off of. The amount of fiat on there increased from 8M to 22M (an ATH) overnight.
4. The hammer candle on the daily chart.
5. The recovery right back above the 530 low that took two weeks to break.
6. The amount of overextended short interest that was on bitfinex.
7. The weekly chart pattern consistency with all previous bitcoin rallies (except 2011 bubble)

wait for the weekend. If BTC is going to take a hammering it will be over the weekend.

I can honestly see it down to 400-450 with then a slow climb back up to about 600.

The main reason for this is the money wants to make money and to do this BTC needs to fall before some big buys go in.

look at BTC-E realy small amounts of BTC being traded for quite big swings
Sub 450 is unlikely. Too much volume.

https://i.imgur.com/XAzdIwP.png

This would make for a somewhat more realistic bottom.  (though it still looks a little short to me overall)

Any predictions on when the breakout is going to come and is it going to be up or down ?
Short term breakout down. Then midterm breakout up.

It starts going up so people are buying more and selling less because they expect the trend to continue, is it going up because of some pumping??

Bitcoin's price is surely not easy to predict ;D

Well, we're back at 550 so don't call it just yet. We never did test 500 properly and spent just a few hours below in that flash crash to 400. I'd expect to see a bit more activity in the low 500s and even  the odd dip lower to make sure (pessimistic but possible) before real confidence is reestablished.

Look at the posts before you, all this drama may be mostly rumours

In a medium or long term perspective buying at 520$ seem very low, we know some news could bring the price to thousands of dollars in a month

What news would that be?  There has been more extremely positive news over the last few weeks than ever before, yet we're still in the downtrend.

Bad news from Europe, companies earning in the states or Europe, Janet Yellen increasing QE, Draghi monetizing european debt, banks very shady business exposed and banks on the verge of collapse again would be good news for Bitcoin

Paypal, Amazon, governments accepting Bitcoin

Adoption is going up and time is positive for Bitcoin if there is not a catastrophy or an alt coin that takes it down so I feel we should resume the bull market at some point but I agree we are still in the downtrend atm

I don't see these "calls" as much more than common sense at best. The last "bottom" was too quick and the bounce too strong. 500 seems about right for various reasons that others are more qualified to talk about.
Even then, I'm not sure it might not be too optimistic. We're back under 500 for the third (?) time, perhaps only briefly but we'll see.
Regardless, I'm a HODLER since I get paid my bitcoins little and often. Though if we dip under 450 then the proportion I've put aside to pay tax will come back into play. Time will tell whether that was smart or dumb...

Incidentally, it's worth noting there's often a dip at the weekends, which could push us firmly under 500 for a while.
Someone else might be able to provide data on what money is waiting to snap up cheap coins at different prices on the exchanges and so where the support might be.

In Australia the main choice is between coinjar (2% commission from fiat) and btradeaustralia (4.9% commission from fiat). Not too happy either way, might look into sending money overseas to Moolah, anyone done this?

I'm hodling myself. But yup, I forsee the 400 mark right around the corner. People have been predicting for some time that April will be the down month for bitcoin. And if enough people believe that, then the market will reflect it. But conversely, enough people still believe strongly in bitcoin for the long-term, so it will definitely rally back to the quadruple digits.

Maybe. But I've seen all kinds of crazy predictions for April, July, August (why does May never get a look in?) both up and down. Right now I kind of figure, whatever. Like Billy Currington says, God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy. I'm not prepared to try to predict what a lot of panic buyers/sellers are going to do next and then beat myself up when I get it wrong...

2% and 4.9% are their fees before they change the money; they don't give you the same rate that they get so they take an other 1.5-4% there

The receiving bank often take a fee itself, they are bleeding us

Capitulation is a mixture of panic, despair, and angry, frustrated boredom. We're getting closer.
In my mind, the likelihood that we are truly there is inversely correlated to the number of mentions of phrases like "to da moon", mentions of that irritating train we kept hearing so much about, and so on.
So clearly, we're not quite there yet.

Yes, group emotions and other fluffy stuff play a roll proportional to speculation level (BTC is like >=90% speculative now). With that in mind it maybe more likely to "launch" during warmer happier weather in the northern hemisphere when more optimism abounds. I see some people also chart using moon phase as a side indicator, statistically it appears to help prediction.

So "TO DA MOOOON BRO, KNOMSAYIN" by this summer maybe ;D

Very interesting, how have you observed these "patterns", and/or can you show them statistically?

markets are reactive - not predictive.

pow! that sounds like an 80s business guru tagline. awesome!

i consider markets to be chaotic systems involving economics and psychology.

traders try to predict the price movement in order to accrue wealth.

we gonna see double figures again.

we'll have to wait and see.

great.

I think people (in general) will start turning bullish after they see a bottom, well after the rise has started.

A few lone whales will start the avalanche, so i guess it's up to them.

I think there's alot of dry powder out there waiting for the bottom.

Charts seem to be tightening as they do before breakout (I'm fairly certain it won't break to the downside).

That's the kind of thing you only really know with hindsight.
I'm still trying to digest the China news and the end of the tax year theories, wondering what difference clarity will make after each of those deadlines. (Answer may be none; not sure yet.)
Either way I imagine we'll have a better picture after the weekend, and better still early-mid April.

May have bought too soon at 500-513.  Holding a little in reserve in case we see the mid 400s.

It's taken a while, but I'm actually starting to enjoy this nasty little roller coaster.  :D

Of course he said that, after 400 bottom and rise to 700$. It's lol indeed. I sold at 570$ and it was stupid so I had to rebuy again to make profit, If you really think that selling below 550$ was good while price went up another 160$ that that's enough for me here.

Cheers  ;D

Already bought a bit. Price will likely go down more though.

Weekends usually introduce a dip, so I would wait atleast 36 hours more to see how it goes. Trying to pick out the exact price is difficult and a much bigger gamble than picking out trends.

@igorr, there is more historic price data available for analysis, you seem to crop for your own spin lol.

In fact your time range encompasses the last "falling pennant" falling pennants tent to lead to breakouts, they have done in BTC history, always breaking to the upside. weeeee!

here's a much more sensible channel that encompasses all history on a log scale, take a good look at it kiddo you may learn something, the falling pennants are the blue trapezoids ;)

We see the same patterns with the price going up to new highs then dropping but it has been mostly going up since the beginning, sometimes I feel people forget that; even at 500$ way more than the majority of bitcoin holders are in profit

haha not quite. i was responding to the idea that the descending triangle pattern was a "BULLISH FLAG". that was a purely technical consideration. also, it does seem like we have already broken out to the downside. it remains to be seen, however, whether or not this will decisively invalidate the all-time exponential growth trend as pictured in g4c's image.

time-scales are very important ;)

There it is, firmly in mid-400s territory. Not sure why people took their time but there you have it.
(Not trying to claim any credit for getting it right, since I wasn't and it was an assumption rather than a brilliant inference given to my by cosmofly's autistic savant friend.)
I do wonder how much money has left bitcoin in the last 3 months. $1100 to ~$450 is a drop of 60%, but much more than 60% of money must have been taken out since, of course, not everyone who holds btc worth $x actually paid that for them (i.e. at $450 most people have bought at less than that, it's just the last few buyers who pushed it over the $450 mark). I've asked this question before and haven't been able to figure out an answer, but I assume that something like 80% or more of the total money put into bitcoin has been yanked out as people sold down to where we are now. Which is one heck of a loss of confidence.

The '400$ bottom' myth is about to get busted.  ;D

.. Not really..  IMO a dip below $400 for less than 8 hours proves $400 is the current bottom...

Yes, there was some buying below $400. Still, those fakeouts are no prove for a trend reversal.

IMHO fakeouts are not even an indication for a possible change in trend direction. I'll change my opinion instantly, if you show me a statistical prove (backtests), that fakeouts indicate a trend reversal with an accuracy better than a coinflip (50%).

It doesn't prove it, I hope it is but we can't say we are not done with testing the lows until the price has been higher than 600$ for months

There is a good chance the USSA will do the same as China and restrict banks and payment processors from touching cryptocurrencies. That would test below 400, I assure you.

interesting. i tend to agree on the outcome, but what kind of probability do you put on this, and what kind of time frame? it seems like, thus far, USA has been pretty favorable to crypto.

You want a serious answer? Ok, as soon as it is proven that an assassination market exists that uses cryptocurrencies and that there is no other way to defeat it than drastic measures.

Assassination market = Dead pool.  Example: stiffs.com
Clint Eastwood even had a movie about it in 1988, 20 years before btc existed.  The assassination market stuff is pure hype.

That's because it wasn't feasible. Clint Eastwood made the movie as a social commentary because it could come true, and it did. With a good mixing service any 4chan psycho could make some quick weekend money by calling in a bomb threat from a throwaway phone or email address unless funds are sent to a bitcoin address. Hear me now, believe me later.

Bitcoin history showed that most traders would have make more money by holding that playing the swings

OP statement seems smart again

Yeah, Raystonn was posting his amazing predictions, but once I kept pestering him about performance vs. buy and hold, he quit posting.  I did the math on that thread and found that buy and hold was the winner and he didn't want to admit it.

There may has been as many buyers than sellers at sub550

661$ atm seems pretty low compared to an inflated USD totally overvalued and the potential of the Bitcoin protocol

New ATH by end of July 2014 here we come.

$5000 by the end of 2014 here we come!

Let this serve as a lesson for the people who are now predicting the bottom is in and we'll never see $300 again and a new ATH by whenever. Don't be misled by greedy manipulators and do your own due diligence.

The price is pretty strong at around 400$ considering the negativity and the talks of the price going down sub 300$, we could be at 600$ before the end of the year and get the new spike up to a new ATH in 2015

There would have to be a catalyst in 2015 to drive a major bull run. People predicted VC money would take us to $5k per btc in July and it didn't. People said major companies accepting btc will cause mass adoption but it didn't. There actually doesn't seem to be much negativity surrounding BTC right now, just that the demand has slowed with less new people coming into BTC.
