Title: What would happen if I changed my name?
Post by: Jet Cash on September 12, 2018, 09:54:43 AM
I don't have any plans at the moment, but I have just made a discovery.

It seems that Walmart owns the domain name Jet.com, and they use it for an online shopping service. There seems to be an associated payments processing service they call "Jet Cash". I have owned JetCash.com (https://JetCash.com) since 2002, and I have used it as a small payment service associated with my Baronets domain name business. In recent years I have used it to discuss Bitcoin and other Crypto-currencies, as they really are the new jet cash payment systems.

I have to consider the possibility that I may need to move away from the use of the name, and the associated sobriquet in the future. How will an alternative name affect my activities here?

I think you should just change the name of your domain, it wouldn't affect you here as you are also one of the oldest folks here on bitcointalk. If you just want to change your name just to be cleared that you aren't involved on that certain website then the decision is yours.

As an addition to that, it won't affect your reputation here even if you change your name. Some will put this thread on archive as future references that you've made a decision to clarify yourself and to that said website that wasn't yours.

Edited:

And as long as you have that cat with a hat nobody will doubt you for being Jet Cash ;D

Just keep the avatar, You'll still be recognised...

Actually "Jet Cash" probably isn't an original name that they could sue for copyright for, and unless you offter them the domain for £10 000 000 then you don't need to sell up...

Then I will not be able to call you Sir Jets again  :(

Anyway, I didn't really know that your username was associated with anything. I thought it's just a username. Sometimes it made me think why "Jet Cash" is the username you've chosen to use, I'm confused of the "Cash" hehe.
I have to consider the possibility that I may need to move away from the use of the name, and the associated sobriquet in the future. How will an alternative name affect my activities here?
Actually I don't see anything wrong with it. I think it will be just fine even though your name was associated with something. It's just a username and everybody can put any username they want. Also you already used the username before they even know it. But, if you're really serious about changing your username, may I know what username will it be?  :P

I think if he'll be changing his name this would be better:

Plane Money
Flying Fiat
CatWithAHat
IgnoreMyBuddy

Or you may simply use your alternative's such as Jet's TalkMerit

I've always had a .com domain name associated with my forum identities. My recent registration of Jet Aid is the first and only one that doesn't have the .com associated with it. I used to own Sir Clips, but I think I let that one drop. I use the name "Kuffy" on a variety of other boards, and this is mentioned on the Jet Cash index page. I try to be open about these associations, it makes like much easier.

I have no plans to change my name at the moment. This thread is a bit of a pre-emptive mention in case I am no longer the owner of the name in the future. It is unlikely to be an instant problem if the need to change does arrive, and I can throw the topic open to the forum for suggestions before taking any action.

The association of a .com domain name with a board identity is a personal choice of mine, and it is obviously not a requirement of membership here. Using the same avatar would be an obvious aid to clarifying any change of name.

I think both "jet" and "cash" are a common name, so you wouldn't be sued. The problem is that at first glance, JetCash seems like a cryptocurrency, a fork of Jet Coin.
Shall we download the Jet Wallet?

XEE coin (http://xeecoin.com/) is the coin I was considering starting, but one needs to see what happens with the new regulations, and to let the scam coins fade away first.

That isn't the right thing to think,  first if you got yourself named like that, before they exist then it is definitely yours and no need to change it for the sake of their payments schemes. If you're just concern of being accused of having a connection to that certain site then that's the only reason that is acceptable.

Well, I also doubt that your domain will never be accused in the future if something happens to that site. So it's better to change the domain but not your username here, In fact, they doesnt seems to have a connection here in bitcointalk.

That's a bit sad. But even though future companies and etc. stole your name and copyrighted it. The one and only Jet Cash that Bitcointalk knew is the legendary member who wear an avatar of cat with a hat. I mean in case that you've changed your username in the future, you will still be the same and people here will still recognise you. Just like Vod, whenever I see the guy in his avatar around in internet (even it's not licking his boobs) the one who came to my mind is Vod. You guys are really lucky to have your avatar ;)

If ever that you ask theymos to change your username, maybe you can just remove the "Cash"  :)

I've been doing a bit of research, and I've found out that somebody is starting a "JetCash" crypto. They are using the .org domain name. This is not associated with me, and I have no knowledge of the site, the operators or the possible coin. I would suggest that anyone considering using, or investing in the coin should approach it with extreme caution. Any organisation that tries to capitalise on my name must be suspect.

They will be aware of me, as anyone registering a name should look at the .com first before registering and alternative TLD.

IANAL, but if you've owned the domain for 16 years, I don't expect they can easily force you to surrender the domain. That leaves the option of buying it from you, which means they'll have to make a very decent offer.
The 50BTC needed to change your forum name will of course be included in the negotiations :D

My suggestion if it ever comes to that: Cash Jet. If you consider this nick, you should probably claim it now.

I didn't register the name to sell it, and I would prefer to keep it to go with my current board identity.

I'm a bit shocked by all the sites that are trying to cash in on the name. There is even a horse called "Jet Cash", and it isn't a unicorn.
I need to put together a page clarifying my situation, but as a quick guide, here is some information that may be of note for members.

I have two alts - JetAid and Talk Merit.

JetCash.com (https://jetcash.com/) is the web site for Jet Cash
JetCash.com/jet-aid (https://jetcash.com/jet-aid) is the web directory for JetAlt
TalkMerit.com (https://TalkMerit.com/) is the web site for Talk Merit
TalkMerit.com/support (https://talkmerit.com/support/) is the support ticket system for Jet cash and Talk Merit
TalkMerit.com/the-source (https://talkmerit.com/the-source/index.php) Is the Jet Cash merit source blog
FitToTalk.com/english-talk (https://fittotalk.com/english-talk/) Is the Jet Talk English language training site[/url]
Baronets.com (https://baronets.com/) is my domain name investment service.
upr8.com (https://upr8.com/) is my domain associated with my Steemit activity (which aren't very active)
JetCash.com/ask-a-legendary (https://jetcash.com/ask-a-legendary/) is the ask a legendary Q and A site.

I own over 500 domain names, so this is only a small part of my activities, but, from memory, I think they are the most relevant for BitcoinTalk. However, I expect I have forgotten a few.

Probably are. I'm surprised we don't see more of this sort of thing. People using other reputable members names, and knocking out their scam coin. They've tried everything else, and its only a matter of time. I haven't done any research into the matter, but I'm sure some have used theymos' name :D

What would you suggest I do if they announce an ICO in Bitcoin Talk?

Make a coin with the name now. Make it a bitcoin clone and then fork it later into a better coin...

You haven't even been here a year and you want to act superior, that's pretty interesting. Which part of the OP makes you think that the thread was opened by a Newbie?

honestly i don't understand the point of opening these "my little diary" threads in here. ::)

This thread has a very specific purpose and asks a very specific question. I don't understand the post of replying with these "my little diary" posts. The thread is no better off now that you've become a part of it. You have contributed nothing and substantiated nothing.

Now, replying to the main question at hand.. I doubt it would change anything around here for you. A lot of people like to think that their namesake carries a reputation with it, but more realistically we would treat anybody that acts the same as you, the same as we treat you. We aren't giving you special treatment due to your name, so even if everyone forgot who you are you would be able to operate similarly to how you do now. I wouldn't be too worried about changing my name due to the circumstances you've outlined, but if you feel the need to then I wouldn't worry too much about that, either.

And there are clearly people who don't read the OPs still :(.

Thanks for the comments guys, and there are a few reasons for making this thread.

One is a selfish reason. I want to establish that I have been using the name for payment processing for a number of years, and lateely in association with crypto-currencies.

Another is that I don't want to be associated with any scam coins just because they use the name. The Walmart payment service will not be a scam obviously, but the name does seem to have attracted a few people, and they may not have established reputations.

Bitcoin Talk does take reputations seriously, and when I registered JetAid, I was contacted by a senior member to verify that it was an alt of mine. Quite a lot goes on behind the scenes here, and I support any forum initiative to block fraud, especially if new members or guests may be the victims.

Just wondering did somebody contacted you to buy that domain or you received some inquiry about some merchandise product. I think name and domain name will remain with the user who registered it first. Unless somebody turned unlucky in this case (http://fortune.com/2018/04/30/france-domain-name-france-com/) where France just decided to seize the Domain name without any talks or settlement.

How will an alternative name affect my activities here?

Given that the forum is anonymous and we don`t know who is who in fact, our pseudonyms are our identification. Thanks to them we become recognizable in this forum. With the help of a pseudonym, we are proving ourselves and try to deserve the respect from other participants. Avatars, signatures and personal texts can be changed, but when I see the certain pseudonym, I immediately have associations with this person. And I have the same association with you, although I`ve never seen you and can`t imagine how do you look. All that I have to create your image is your nickname. It`s around your pseudonym that my idea of you is being built, which is also supported by your posts and activity on the forum. I don`t think you should change your name.

In the anonymous environment of bitcointalk forum, the name is all we have to learn about others and to be recognizable. Of course, the image can be transferred to another alias, but other associations will appear with a different name. I believe that you deserved an excellent reputation on the forum, other participants know you, you are respected and people listen to your advice. And all this you have done under the Jet Cash name. For example, when I go to the Meta branch, I look for your name among the authors of the new discussion, and I always open it, because I know that it can`t be uninteresting or irrelevant. First you worked for a name, and now it works for you (no doubt, you, of course, continue to try and develop, but still). You have an interesting and memorable pseudonym. I would`t want you to change it.

Your name is also never truly changed. If you send a pm to someone with a name change it might still show up as either being their new name or their old name...

I thought that everybody searches for others (ex, crush, boy/girl nextdoor and so on).
Anyways my search of my username yielded me some interesting twitter profile "https://twitter.com/r1s2g3"

Till now I used to think I have very unique  name but somebody already have this name in twitter from April 2011 beating me up with margin of 6.5 years.
though does not look like that twitter person linked to crypto (at least on that profile).

Can you check if they (Walmart) have already registered their 'JetCash' system as a trademark? I don't really know what they can do if you own that name for so long, but logically that domain was yours before they have found out that name for their service (or they have just met with your system in the past and they liked it (and after took it...)).
Maybe you can consult with a lawyer specialized in this, but I'm sure you have some experience too in connection with these kind of things if you sell domain names for so long...

Edit:
And don't worry, if people read the forum enough, they get used to the people's writing style, so you'll be recognized after a nick change as well (and I'm sure that Walmart won't use your avatar picture, so you can use it afterwards, that's even more recognizable)...

If you do change your name i suggest you to change the name to bitcash since we are in the cryptocurrency and every bitcoin you will get is equivalent to cash. I do not know if someone own that name but it is only a suggestion though.

Bitcash BCH? That Roger Ver scam coin?
Your argument is invalid, Jet Cash will be the first cryptocurrency equivalent to cash! Powered by Jet engine, 4th generation blockchain.

Many thanks for all the helpful and encouraging replies and comments.

With regard to Theymos and name changes. My understanding is that donators are allowed to do this, and I think he has stated that he may include this as an option for a possible rank above Legendary. At the moment he is reluctant to make any name changes, and has only done this under exceptional circumstances for long standing senior members.

The possibility of my changing the Jet Cash name - I have re-read this thread, and I have come to the conclusion that my obsession with associating a .com domain name with a board identity is unreasonable on the modern internet. Whilst is is an advantage, I do not believe that it is essential. I have been a member of various forums since the last century, and JetAid is the first board identity that doesn't have the .com associated with it. Branding is an important   consideration, and I feel that "Jet Cash" is my brand, together with the black cat avatar ( which I also use with my Kuffy identity). I received a lot of criticism when I changed my avatar, and as a result, I changed it back. I have decided to retain both the sobriquet and the avatar whatever happens.

The use of the "Jet Cash" name associated with a payment service. I registered the name in 2002 to brand a payment service associated with my Baronets domain name business. I have used it as a private facility since that time. When I joined Bitcoin Talk, it seemed the obvious choice for a name, as Bitcoin is a tremendous payment method to associate with virtual assets ( amongst other things). I have considered creating my own coin, but have not taken any steps towards creating this product. I will not use the Jet Cash name for this, so any coin using this name is not associated with me. In fact any payment facility that is not mentioned on The official Jet Cash site (https://JetCash.com) is not associated with me, and therefore it should be approached with extreme caution.

The Walmart use of the name - Walmart is a large marketing organisation with a strong capital base, and I believe that any payment service that is wholly owned by the organisation can be used with confidence. Walmart owns the domain name Jet.com, and they use this to provide an online retail store. They have used the phrase "Jet Cash" to facilitate payments, and to provide bonuses for their customers. To be best of my knowledge, this is the only alternative reputable service that uses the "Jet Cash" name.

Maybe Cat in Hat?

Well, I based it to a fairy tale story of "Puss in boots" since your avatar is a cat with a hat? Through that people will determine that you're Jet Cash. I don't have any idea about cool usernames that is based on your activities but this puss' name is very lit.  ;)

If you have that characteristic then it's good tho.
