Yes bitcoin is the most popular coin in cryptocurrency, it has the huge value and lso the most volume coin in the market, but along with its history, it began by small value and then raises its price yearly. And now its the most precious coins of all in the market. It has a good quality and feature that it can be long term investment.

I think bitcoin is moving on steadily to be the future of all financial transaction globally. China last week legalized cryptocurrency for all forms of transactions. Bitcoin is good for both long and short terms because it is verry volatile compared to other coins that may seem to be stable  but lets keep in mind that bitcoin's main purpose is really for currency use or for paying and buying .

If transaction fees is our concern then We shouldnt be afraid of it because the fees are also volatile . not all times the fee was high but most of the time it is verry afordable and have a slight difference on other alts like eth and bch .

I do that as well not only because I don't want to fall into a trading trap but also because I don't want the government and banks to know how much I'm holding.
I could put it all on exchange like the traders do, but that would expose me and I'd have to pay taxes. Also, It would make my coins vulnerable and I don't want to hold money on exchange and I don't want to transfer fiat to a bank so the only way for me is to keep holding.

If you only hold for 1 year, i think you won't get much profit, even will facing loss in the future.
For example the peoples who bought bitcoin in december 2017. If they still holding their btc for 1 year, they won't get any profit because now in dec 2018 btc price is still far below the price they bought. Hold at least for 3 years.

If you able to bought Bitcoin when it fall to 3.1k$ it should be a good opportunity to hold long term.
