Title: Whats your most common uses for cryptocurrencies?
Post by: W.Wander on January 22, 2019, 11:56:21 PM
What do you use cryptocurrencies most often for? If you thought about what cryptocurrency you use the most and what your favorite/most often use case is for it, what would it be? Obviously if it's private and you don't wish to share that's fine, I'm just curious to see what's being used and where people go most often for purchases, maybe pick up some new websites to visit for stuff I haven't found yet, or just share some places with other users who don't know many places to spend at.

What would the websites be, or physical places you visit for your purchases? Anybody offer discounts for cryptocurrencies or anything special? Like, what is the drive that gets you to get and use cryptocurrency for a purchase over a credit card. Special things you can only buy with crypto's or special discounts or anything, or just for the ease of transferring funds mostly?

----Edit---- Adding an edit here, thank you everyone thats posting.
***To all those that mentioned they make purchases for various things, would you care to share actual websites you visit? Sharing the names/links. The purpose of my post was to get people discussing about where they transact and to make a recommendation of where they do like to visit so that other users can see new places where they can transact where they've never known they could before. Which, if you look in this thread you can see there are quite a few people posting in just this thread alone  that don't really know anywhere at all that they can go to transact with their cryptocurrency's.  So to all who mentioned what they like to make purchases on, could you make direct recommendations of what those sites are that you like to visit?****

That was the purpose here, I gave one of my recommendations with Gyft  website.  So all of us to know where we can transact with our cryptocurrency's, let's help out those in this thread and that may read this thread find places where they can actually make purchases and utilize their cryptocurrency.

I would prefer to use cryptocurrencies as much as possible, if I Have the chance. It's somewhat an action to support crypto and believe that one day it would replace fiat in the future. For purchases, like online shopping, we have a company here in the country that allows users to have crypto wallets and it is accepted in some online shopping platform. So I get to use some of my cryptos to buy stuff from there.

I don't think there would be discounts on common sites that is initially not crypto accepting shop. I have purchased a bag using crypto; ever since it was low price, I value that bag now. I bought it around 1200+ BTC back then. So it's worth more now than it should be, but I don't regret it.

Bitcoin.

I can pay for p2p trades and the popular one is paying bills and can pay for shopping online which is very convenient even the product's worth $2, it's good as paying it through COD.

This might be ironic right now due to the huge price fluctuations, but bitcoin as a store-of-value. I'm very positive that with time, I assume bitcoin will attain a stable price; it's pretty much just a matter of 'when'. People will realize how good bitcoin is as a store-of-value(and as a currency), only when they actually experience economic crisis in their country. Of course using a store-of-value currency like bitcoin would kinda be pointless for people in countries like the United States, but for people in countries going through an economic shitstorm like Venezuela, bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are a godsend.

We have a local wallet that allow us to use our bitcoin to pay for our bills, from credit card to electric, water and even internet and mobile phone load. So that's the best use case for me. I haven't try to purchase things online though, but I heard lots of websites accepting crypto like https://openbazaar.org/ and https://www.newegg.com/, and book flights in https://www.cheapair.com/.

I don't how weird this may seem but my most used cryptocurrency is Ethereum and my major use for it has been gambling, I'm not a gambling addict and I could have my Ethereum for several months or most times even convert my fiats into ETH not and decide not use them, but more often than I used it gamble on decentralized betting platform, and convert into BTC when I'm to gamble on BTC-only accepted platforms.

What would the websites be, or physical places you visit for your purchases?

About 90% of the times when I needed to convert fiat to ETH or BTC has been online, via Luno or Paxful (a peer to peer market place with variety of payment options) respectively, In my country there are not so many physical places where you can trade cash for cryptocurrencies.

despite the word "cryptocurrency", they are not used as currencies apart from bitcoin. in fact majority of altcoins are not even created to be used as currencies hence they are not capable of doing so. they are instead created for pump and dumping purposes so that is what all of us are using altcoins for, even if some of us don't like to admit it!
there are some good ideas here and there among them too which can be seen as another usage of them which is exploring other areas of blockchain technology. but the cases are so few.
that only leaves bitcoin which has multiple purposes, the volatility provides a good asset for trading and making profit. the security and decentralization of it makes it a good store of value, and its design makes it a good currency.

Due to its nature I don't believe Bitcoin will attain a stable price any time soon. I do agree with you and I also use Bitcoin as a store of value right now. It's like the gold of cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin isn't going away anytime soon, and if you haven't bought at the ATH of 20k then from where we are now ,you can only go up.
I know that's not how Bitcoin was supposed to be used, but at the moment it's the smartest thing for me to do.

I prefer to use Bitcoin for ecommerce, because I was a victim of credit card fraud and Bitcoin is so much better than any other payment option that I have used before. <PayPal & Credit cards>

I also buy food and snacks at some local food merchants with bitcoins that was converted from my entertainment budget, specifically for that purpose. <Why spend that in fiat, if I can convert it to bitcoins>  ;D

I spend 20% of all the coins I buy and I hoard the remaining 80%.  8)

Oh definitely not anytime soon. It will take time; as I'm pretty sure gold also took A LOT of time before it became stable enough in terms of price. I just really hope we can attain price stability with bitcoin in our lifetime.

Also, whose to say that you can't go up even if you bought at 20k? :P

I use crypto currencies mostly for investing, staking and earning interests through lending. I am also curious whether there is any shop offering discounts or good deals when paying with crypto currencies.

I could've sworn I added "this year" at the end of my sentence. Well, my bad, I am actually very optimistic about Bitcoin and I am sure that it will beat the old ATH, but that will probably not happen until next year.

Until now, I only use cryptocurrency as a place to invest, there is no party that supports the use of cryptocurrency in my country and they don't even know the function of cryptocurrency, it's just that they judge negatively because of the news circulating. Actually I always wanted to use cryptocurrency in my life everyday but there were no supporting facilities to use it.

In real, now the digital currency is indeed very much used as an investment, only a few percent use digital currency as a medium of financial payment. This can be recognized because currently there is still a lack of facilities and also places that accept digital currency payments. Investment is far more attractive because it can provide many benefits. But now more and more years there has been an increase in the number of uses of the digital currency, good progress and of course it must be further improved. We are all happy and we will all get satisfying results when we can do our best.

Since I don't know any companies or establishments that are accepting cryptocurrencies at this moment, I use crypto as my storage of funds. There is a little risk there but I'm holding coins that I know that will boom in the future. There are some times that I spend some of them to trading and some to gambling but it is a small amount only. I wish in the future, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies will be use as a payment device.

Basically for BTC, its a storage of value so pretty much what you want but for some like me its going to be used to invest to more projects. I have been buying on ICO and also have been investing my skills to profit from these projects. So just when I got some ETH, I end up buying Token sales because I know I can profit from it.

After I understand the whole blockchain technology, I realized that the traditional payment system is too slow. The main use of bitcoin to me is it serves a currency for me to buy goods and services in my community.

Lower comissions and much faster transferences! So the most common use of crypto in the future will be   EVERYTHING!

For me as long as the crytpo or altcoins has a high volume in the platform exchange and its value is movable, that's I could say it is a useful coin for sure. And one of this example are Bitcoin, Ethereum, dent, Xem, Utk, Neo, and others.

For me crypto currencies are mostly used as savings and like investing on top coins and earning the profit from it. There are countries accepting BTC payment and few countries have ATM too but once it is approved by our country i will use it for payments, purchase of products etc in my daily routine.
There are few coins which we can invest in like BTC,ETH,Neo,Xrp etc..

I believe in cryptocurrencies as a new kind of money, but, unfortunately, I don't have many opportunities to use them appropriately. Sometimes I buy one crypto with another, mostly I just hold and from time to time I exchange bitcoin for fiat when I need money for stuff like bills, rent, food, transport etc. If I could pay for these basic things with cryptos in bitcoin, I definitely would do that. I don't think that cryptos should only be used for some illegal activities or for trading. Their primary purpose is being a new type of money that cannot be faked, suffer from hyperinflation or be under control of a single authority.

Travel the world.  Now possible to travel the world by spending cryptocurrency.

Some  travel agents accept bitcoin as a payment method to book flights, car rentals, and hotels and for those who prefer to stay in an apartment when traveling can book accommodation using bitcoin (BTC) or ether (ETH) on CryptoCribs.

The growth of the bitcoin ATM market also means travelers are now able to convert their cryptocurrency into local currency in most major cities around the world.

This is actually a good one because this is actually a primary purpose behind my post, a lot of people don't know how or where they can use cryptos to make purchases in daily life! So I'm trying to maybe get a list of some new sites together for users out there that currently don't know where they could be utilizing it as a currency like it should be! Great response thank you.

I have a good recommendation for you, i'll give out one of my favorite sites to visit for cryptocurrency purchases, Gyft.com. You can purchase all sorts of different companies gift cards using bitcoin, all done quickly and can even be done on mobile app on your phone. They have a bunch of different large brand companies on there like eBay and others. Great gateway for using your cryptocurrency to make a purchase at most retailers even if they don't accept cryptocurrency. They don't charge any fee's either. ~ I'm in no way affiliated with them, just giving out one of my resources to help you know where you can make bitcoin purchases!

I've always used bitcoin and I've never used another crypto currency. The last time I spent $ 135 in bitcoins on CS: GO skins about 2 years ago, that was my biggest mistake, because if I had just waited a bitcoin was low at that time and later it started to grow. I never invested in other currencies, and the bitcoin was the most reliable and I did not make a mistake.

I use Bitcoin only ocasionally for purchases necause I tend to hold it and I don't have a very big amount so I can't spend them on daily stuff. As for other cryptocurrencies, I only hold them and use them for trading, since Bitcoin is accepted more I use it for purchases. My purchases are mostly buying from other persons or online game shops and those are on a very low monthly/yearly basis.

I use it as my savings, instead of storing my funds in the bank I prefer to buy coins and store it in my safe wallet then never spend it and just keep it as my savings. Having Crypto gives me full control of my funds without needing third trusted party like banks. This made me feel more secure of my asset and even expect greater return in the future.

Everyone writes that they buy something for cryptocurrency. Honestly, I don’t even know where and what to buy for real-time cryptocurrency. Everything that I buy is sold in regular stores where there is no such payment method yet. The only way out, if you want to buy for cryptocurrency, is to buy it in special online stores, which are also not so many!

I own a 3d printer and I don't need an accountant yet.

Having Crypto gives me full control of my funds without needing third trusted party like banks. This made me feel more secure of my asset and even expect greater return in the future.
We're same i don't buy goods online with my cryptocurrency instead i use it as my back up money in case my wallet goes empty then i can sell it right away. I trust it more than banks do with my secured money on them although i have banks also where my fiat money are stored there are still risks like system glitch that i experienced once.

I using my bitcoin in speculation and also for utility. I usually to day trading because I always getting a lot of benefits from it. For me to pay my monthly bills,  I use bitcoin as mode of payment because it is more faster than using fiat currency.

paying bills and transferring funds as well that's how I also used crypto, as it is a much convenient way not to fall in line anymore and rushing to fall in line when I need to transfer funds or I need to pay any bills as we already have service where crypto can be used as a form of payment, transactions are instant so no need to fall in line and wait for any cashier / attendant to process my request  as I can do it much easier and quicker using my device.

I used to pay with Bitcoin everywhere back in the day when I lived in Berlin for a while. Merchant adoption never kicked off in the States, which is sad.
I've only used cryptocurrencies AS currencies, and it seems more difficult to do so now than 5 years ago, especially given that I'm not in Europe anymore.

To all those that mentioned they make purchases for various things, would you care to share actual websites you visit? Sharing the names/links. The purpose of my post was to get people discussing about where they transact and to make a recommendation of where they do like to visit so that other users can see new places where they can transact where they've never known they could before. Which, if you look in this thread you can see there are quite a few people posting in just this thread alone  that don't really know anywhere at all that they can go to transact with their cryptocurrency's.  So to all who mentioned what they like to make purchases on, could you make direct recommendations of what those sites are that you like to visit?

That was the purpose here, I gave one of my recommendations with Gyft  website.  So all of us to know where we can transact with our cryptocurrency's, let's help out those in this thread and that may read this thread find places where they can actually make purchases and utilize their cryptocurrency.

I don't know, though I dont need them yet as of this time but I just want to feel I have them. Somehow it makes me feel good and satisfied knowing that I have them in my wallet.

Most of the user treat cryptocurrency as a long term investment which is also good since cryptomarket will alwasy grow and if you hold more, a higher chance of huge profit.

I only use bitcoin and use with greater frequency to make trade. I do not know if that counts, but I usually buy refills for cell phones using my bitcoins and I also convert bitcoins to FIAT to make purchases on the internet. In my country there are no places where I can shop using bitcoin directly. This is a great disadvantage.

anything special?

I think in my case it would be the purchase refills for mobile phone

what I do now is just holding...

I also Hold and also spent, I think it can do both

Main common used for me personally at least is the ability to store monetary value.
The option to use the stored value as a method of sending and receiving money is also very convenient.
If I owe a mate money and dont have cash on me, its way easier to send Bitcoin then to send from a bank account.
All of these factors are my most common uses for crypto currencies.

The most common use of cryptocurrency  in my case is to buy prepaid loads for my mobile data connection through our local exchange which offers a lot of services like bill payments, goods and services where merchants accept Bitcoin payment. Other cryptocurrency are also available like Ethereum, Ripple and BitcoinCash that can be converted to our local fiat currency. For me cryptocurrency like Bitcoin is way safer to have than having paper money as it is only for wealthy people. Cryptocurrency is for everyone, we all believe  we can achieve the what we called financial freedom compared to fiat that is prone to crisis.

I totally agree with what you said BlackPanda because the number of people that used crypto currency as an investment increased last year but with the last market correction we cant sure now if the number of crypto investment users still increase or decreased because we both see alot of users on this forum which lamented due to their losses.
Ridwan Fauzi, crypto payment is now advanced which I believe you ought to know by now and if parties support the uses of crypto currency in your country, you can simply apply for a crypto credit card which you can use through ATM or POS terminals.

If all are using that strategy a long time to hold investment nothings happen on Bitcoin price movement, it is not contribute the movement price on the market. The best thing to do is always having transactions with Bitcoin, paying bills and having a trading activity which is the price circulate. More transactions generate to make the Bitcoin price increase.

Cryptocurrencies or to be precise has the very practical use for me. I don't use it only as an investment but to cover my everyday expenses. To pay the bills, buy goods in stores or even to pay for traveling. I use Bitcoins on my Bitcoin debit card which makes every payment much easier because card is accepted everywhere and I don't have to worry if the merchants accept Bitcoin or not.
I think that the true value of Bitcoin is use in real life to pay for real things as an alternative to traditional fiat currencies.

Investing in digital currencies is something very interesting. With changing price movements investors take advantage of the situation to be made a profit. something like this is done by many people, investing in digital currencies can provide a huge source of income.

different things that I do with bitcoin,   the first  for me as a savings or long-term investment and as an asset, both bitcoin can get more income by trading on a daily, basis that can be understood because in the country I live in I have not allowed bitcoin is used as a payment tool directly. me myself is only use crypto for buying mobile recharge and sometimes i used it to pay bills  . i believe these are the common and basic ways to use our cryptocurrencies  .

In our country, we are using an exchange and people think that they are really using Bitcoin to pay their bills.

I know that they are using their Bitcoin in the exchange to pay their bills or dues but what they didn't know is that the exchange already change their BTCs into fiat and use that to pay their desired offices like mobile loads and monthly bills. Though it is great that some people know these since they will be able to think that they can use Bitcoin in some ways like that.

for now the most common use is still in investment to get additional profits and revenues for absolute functions and overall not yet because the government still has not formalized the crypto currency as the applicable currency

I am a newbie in crypto, so I decided on buying some amount and maybe starting to trade in the nearest future. In my city nobody accepts btc as a means of payment, so I might use it for online payments and just store money hoping the price will rise.

What do you use cryptocurrencies most often for?
I use cryptocurrency for trading, make a profit, exchange it into my local fiat. I repeat the process day by day, week by week, month by month :D

If you thought about what cryptocurrency you use the most and what your favorite/most often use case is for it, what would it be?
I use bitcoin and altcoin at the most because that is what I use for trading and I search a way to make a profit in bitcoin. I also use bitcoin and altcoin for a very long-term investment.

What would the websites be, or physical places you visit for your purchases?
I don't buy any products with bitcoin because I prefer to save more bitcoin right now. Besides that, I do not yet find any local website that accepts bitcoin as the payment.

Anybody offer discounts for cryptocurrencies or anything special?
What kind of discount do you want? You will get a discount when the price of the coins is down because you can buy the coins at a low price.

Special things you can only buy with crypto's or special discounts or anything, or just for the ease of transferring funds mostly?
I think the discount is applied in dollars and then we can see how much bitcoin we need to pay because so far, when I see the payment transaction of bitcoin, we don't make any discount or maybe I am wrong.

I hope it answer your question :D

There is no incentives or offers in place if you are dealing with cryptocurrencies that i know off, these offers will be provided by private companies as part of promotion and bitcoin is an open source project, i am not sure about other private crypto offers, most of the countries have not regulated the market and once there is a clear regulation in place many companies will accept it as it will a good one for travelers around the world who does not need to convert their currency to local ones every time and for international business, for me i use bitcoin to gamble when ever i feel like placing a bet in sports or in dice sites and trading is a big part as well. ;)

Obviously if it's private and you don't wish to share that's fine, I'm just curious to see what's being used and where people go most often for purchases, maybe pick up some new websites to visit for stuff I haven't found yet, or just share some places with other users who don't know many places to spend at.

Transactions are the best uses of cryptocurrencies especially bitcoin. In my past transactions, there are delays in the payment but bitcoin has characteristics which the transaction can be more faster and better. The payment system is becoming more better because of the characteristics of cryptocurrencies.

I've been into this community years back, and I've used it on large scale purchase of construction components. For the same I explored and found a retailer who accept bitcoin.

Since when i visit this post i saw your edit(The edit of the person who opened the post), i'll post here some links to the sites i believe and encountered are most useful.

I personally use it mostly as an investment asset but i have done some transactions with it and plan on using it more often for everyday transactions in the future.

This site is related to gaming, they accept other currencies too - Not only Bitcoin:
https://www.instant-gaming.com/en/top50/

This one is about gift cards to send someone in a holiday or something like that:
https://www.gyft.com/buy-gift-cards/?all=1

And this is a wonderful shop, what makes it even better is that you can pick whatever you want to buy from amazon, which is awesome:
https://purse.io/shop

And if someone here have some kind of store, they might be interested about this. The site could be interesting for everyone, but this can make accepting Bitcoins as payment really easy. Something store owners need to see.
https://bitpay.com/retail

None of those are referral links, just trying to help.

Due to the fact that bitcoin has fallen so low in price, I do not have the opportunity to spend it yet. The fact is that I bought it for$ 7000 and it is absolutely not profitable for me to spend it at the price that we see today. So I'll wait for the best moment.

The government in my country stays neutral about cryptocurrency hence its operations are smooth here. Aside trading and earning more from my cryptocurrency holdings, BTC, ETH, LTC, and BCH can be used as a form of money transfer, buy airtime for mobile phones, and pay bills such as electricity, water and television. It is very convenient and easy when i use crypto for such services.

I agreed with you with using cryptocurrency as a digital currency for trading purposes I use ethereum for trading binary options I am quite satisfied and fulfilled while avoiding the cumbersome processes of using skrill, PayPal etc.
I also used a decentralized broker where the issue of price manipulation by scamming brokers is a thing of the past while I don't have issues with withdrawal of my crypto funds as well as exchanging it to fiat.

The first thing that will come out with newcomers minds is being an investment platform, they look for this as an assets that can bring them huge profits, not knowing the entire system and not taking time to research they will just come in hoping to have a good returned, things is not always in investors favors so better to attract newbies with good explanations so they will not fear after seeing sway with the value.

Apart from using cryptocurrencies for the purpose of trading, investing and saving, I personally feel it can be used for other huge number of uses as well, many of which might surprise you a little but let’s have a look:
•   Digital Publishing
•   De-corrupting charities
•   Travel sector
•   Education
•   Fund-raising
•   Augmented Reality
•   Ethical business practices
•   Wealth Management
•   Retail industry
•   Gaming industry
In future, it won’t be wrong if I say that every industry would be run by the blockchain technology alone. Having said that, there will be a dire need for cryptocurrency exchange development (https://antiersolutions.com/cryptocurrency-exchange-development-company.html) so that everything can be streamlined and that the businesses generate huge revenue out of their crypto businesses.

for me, I use bitcoin or other cryptocurrency just for investment or trading. For investment, I usually buy BTC and will hold it for 5-10 years, but this way is very risky because the price of bitcoin tends to be unstable.
All investmnts can be risky due to the prices being unstable so this is not just for bitcoin investment. But this is still the most common use of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. But there are also many people who use them for transactions such as to pay for things, so there is some use as acual currencies and not just for investment or trading.

I agree. The problem with the current way people use it now is that it's mostly a held asset that people bury in their wallets always waiting for it to gain some value before they return it out back to the market. That strategy really strains the transaction rates and movements of many coins, especially the better ones that affects its value in the end. I mean, it should be noted that a market like this is alive when it's active. If most assets are dormant and sleeping without movement, then it won't help the market have the needed activity to have changes, which would transcend or correlate to value increases.

This is the reason why the country I live in hasn't legalized crypto yet. I would really like to use it for daily chores, shopping, payments etc.. but for the time being I am just trading it.
I keep on trading and withdraw the profits on regular intervals to manage my expenses and bill. So far it has been a wonderful journey. Crypto has changed my life to a great extent.

Here you have a few of the most important uses of crypto (Btc mainly for now):

- Bitcoin allows people to pay one another without opening a bank account.

- Bitcoin allows money to be transferred from one country to another. Have you wondered why some country restricted you from leaving the country with large amount of your money, even though you indeed proved that it’s yours and have claims to back it up? The reason is because the government does not want their money to leave the country.

- Bitcoin solves double spending problem. It’s a hassle to reverse a payment if you mistakenly click twice to pay something online. Time is more valuable than spending it to call the bank to solve it.

- Bitcoin allows you to have money almost instantly instead of waiting 3–5 days minimum and paying fees for bank transfer

For me Cryptocurrency are useful mainly for following two purpose:

I am using my cryptocurrency in buying prepaid loads.
Using an app that accept crypto, I get ten percent rebates everytime I buy load. Also, for bills payment there is a discount. Here in our country, bitcoin is not illegal.

That's great, and you can get more benefits from bitcoin. I hope that in the future, I can get the same things as you. Right now, I don't use too much of cryptocurrency besides of exchange it into fiat because it's hard to find a local store that will accept bitcoin or altcoin as the payment. I can only dream for living in the country or city which want accept cryptocurrency for a new payment system.

Though bitcoin here in our country is not totally accepted and recognized by the government at least some merchants will also accept it as a mode of payment. I am also using it for prepaid loads and more.
For offline merchants, it is still very rare especially in countries that prohibit cryptocurrency. but in online, I think payment using crypto is quite famous you know ? I see there are many stores that accept Bitcoin payments, ranging from hosting providers, domains providers, electronic stores, bill payments, etc. and I also often use bitcoin for that, even though I also invest in bitcoin

In my country there are now a couple of offline stores here that now accepts crypto payments . mainly they are retaurants , resto bars and some mini stores  but this only available on major areas   since crypto adoption is not yet really recognize on our city/region    .  so thats it i use my crypto to shop and dine but aside from those i also use it to buy data's ( intenet mb 's )   .

Soon im looking forward to use my crypt to buy some physical items online like gadgets , for example phone , power bank , keyboard , etc ... Im just waiting for our local online shop to support crypto because i heared that they are now doing some move to inplement it on their service .

I really hope that the cryptocurrency will break into all spheres of life. Of course it will bring discomfort to the government, but to ignore the fact that the crypt is more reliable and more convenient, it is impossible. I heard that soon the platform will begin to work fully, where we will be able to buy goods and services for cryptocurrency from different spheres! This is great news for me, because I have long dreamed of traveling, paying with cryptocurrency. 8) Perhaps many will be able to buy real estate and not become slaves of the mortgage ;D

some time ago I was still able to use cryptocurrency to buy some items that I could buy using bitcoin and I used bitcoin to make payments on namecheap, but for now steam doesn't support payment using bitcoin anymore.

It is really sad that this happened and I thought it will be a thing for a long time.

I am buying Steam games for some time now and I am using fiat in the past, when they accepted Bitcoin as a payment method, I got really excited and bought a bunch of games and virtual items, especially on Dota 2 and some keys on CSGO. I hope they will be accepting Bitcoin again in the future so I can enjoy some games without using my money on the bank since I usually save them for something.

All in all, it is still about speculation, and that is the lowest common denominator which all cryptocurrencies share. I suspect this use by far outstrips all other uses out there combined. But it is the difference which seems to be of particular interest here. So other than speculation, Bitcoin itself is used as a surrogate store of value (with a possibility of speculating as a nice bonus) and for transferring wealth from point A to point B. Litecoin can be considered a lightweight version of Bitcoin itself with more emphasis on small payments and value transfer vehicle. Dogecoin is for gambling as it is cheap as dirt and fast as wind. Ethereum as well as its derivatives like EOS, Tron, etc, is used for smart contracts as far as I understand it

What other coins are doing I don't know, and it seems like their authors don't know either

If it is used to pay for buying goods in my country it is not permissible, so it is most common for investment. The regulation of cryptocurrency central bank is only for investment, not payment instruments. Therefore if it is used as a means of payment it means illegal actions.
