I was recently asked the question "what are the most popular cryptocurrencies for investors?" This led me to take some time to investigate what assets were the most popular on our portfolio management application. After evaluating tens of thousands of portfolios, we published this brief study.

Bitcoin is still the first on the list. Its never a doubt for investors to choose bitcoin over other crypto currencies. It has been the first and most popular cryptocoin. There are other coins existing and somehow also promising to invest in. Mostly if we have limited funds we always choose bitcoin to make sure the returns is positive.

Like what article said, mostly what the reason how cryptocurrency popular as investment already fulfilled by bitcoin. And if it completedly by adoption and legalization bitcoin is an perfect investment. Maybe for payment will be need more time, but for investment already good to pick than altcoins.

I am holding bitcoin and ETH, only those two coins make me feel safe. I used to like venture capital once, only investing in alts with low marketcap and long-term hold. but my money got less and less, and the volume returned to zero and I lost everything. So I changed my strategy, I want a little profit but many times in the long run. That's why I hold coins in the top 20 of CMC. The news is pretty good for bitcoin now, in about 3 months its price will increase very sharply.

What's the sense of your most hodl coins analysis if all data for cryptocurrencies are available on market cap website? Quoting on your top choice. Your analysis is just base on the previous market conditions without doing furtger fundamental analysis. You include BSV and BCH on your choice which is obviously just recently ntly revive because of CW clown show. And you include USDT to play safe on choice. WTF analysis you do to include Tether which is a stable coin.

All we know that most of the investors are always invest to the most trusted and strongest crypto here in crypto world which is bitcoin. Another decade came but still bitcoin is still alive so many investors and users are choosed bitcoin because on it's trusted reputation and power that give us a good income.

That was obvious that the majority of crypto enthusiasts holding is Bitcoin. Even me, I give priority on Bitcoin and 75-80% on it was in Bitcoin asset and the rest is on potential altcoins like Ethereum and Binance coin. Top 10 altcoins on CMC will be fine but I have doubt on BSV and probably that is the reason why not shown on the asset popularity chart even it is top 5 on CMC. I personally have doubts on BSV coin that's why I did not hold it into my portfolio.

Bitcoin is on top for a reason and one of them is that it is the best and most popular crypto so far. I know that there are a lot of flaws (fees, slow confirmation etc), but still Bitcoin remain the dominant crypto, so just have to look at coinmarketcap and see how majority of investors are pouring their money on it. As for altcoins, Ethereum and the rest of the top 10 altcoins, I consider. them as good investment as well, but you have to understand that everything really goes on top - Bitcoin. So depending on your risk appetite, BTC will be the most recognizable crypto and a good bet to invest.

The most popular cryptocurrency for investors and crypto enthusiasts and always dominating the market of all time is bitcoin which is a promising and reliable investment compared to other coins.
and even though they have other coins but bitcoin will be their priority and that's undeniable, including me who always prioritizes bitcoin to be able to have it.

I have the same answer as the others, indeed bitcoin is still the most popular cryptocurrency to date. There are none cryptocurrency
that can defeat bitcoin, can be seen in market bitcoin always dominates. But bitcoin is only popular as an investment only, for the
payments problem bitcoin still can not be used optimally. Because there are many other cryptocurrency that is better as payment
compared to bitcoin.

Well you don't really need extensive research to figure out which crypto coins are preferred by investors.  A quick peek into cmc would tell you that. Btc, eth, ripple and the top market coins are preferred by majority who doesn't want to gamble big with untested coins. Btc of course would top any list when it comes to investment popularity.

Not surprised at all. Those coins have big market cap and people tend to look at those coins. Nothing new here. I thought you could produce something more useful from that much of data, not just these results. Waiting to hear more from you guys.

OP, I admire the effort, but the app showed that everything in the "blockchain world" is a popularity contest, or a race on who scams the plebs the most.

Plus popularity, with Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Cash SV, should not be equal to if it is owned by users. Because Bitcoin users with old UTXO do already own them.

Of course every investor in this market will invest in Bitcoin, in addition they will invest in the top altcoins in this market such as ETH, XRP, LTC ... according to analysis, these are altcoins that have The most holders in this market. There are very few people investing in altcoins outside the top 100 because most of them are scam, and people will not risk their investments.

I visited your attached link and it's true that those coins have most holder! Therefore if you check the CMC top coins, I think top 30 coins have more holders and trader than others! Though I have doubt about IOTA holders but yet I can be wrong anytime! Bitcoin, Ethereum, LTC, XRP, XTZ, XLM, TRX, BNB, ATOM, LINK, NEO, DASH, XMR, ZCL has more holders than any other alts!

Of course, wise investors know what to buy so I'm sure that they're looking at the Coinmarketcap to see what's on top. As for me, they will always choose Bitcoin above all else because it remained on top. Ethereum and XRP are also some of the best coins for them. It's now rare form ost investors to choose new coins these days because they already know the risks that they might be facing if the coin fails.

After the whales' panic sell, we have seen that all alts have been affected the most. that has made speculators wary of speculating on alts. By the way, 2020 is the year of Bitcoin, the event of Bitcoin Halving is coming and its price will surely have a strong growth in the near future. If the Corona flu pandemic continues to increase, bitcoin will surely increase in price. It seems like everything is very beneficial for bitcoin so it is the coin that is bought by many people.

Nothing relatively new about the article tbh. If you were to stay in the cryptoscene for a month, or at least, stay in the forum and read for a month, you'd have this basic knowledge of the market already. Bitcoin is a natural, heck, we all know how a lot of traders have started holding BTC since long ago. There was also a recent post here in the forum that details about how a majority of BTC hasn't really been moved, or has not moved ever since being held in traders' wallets.

If you don't have experience in trading platform you must research the top altcoins, Because BTC and ETH are noted in all the investors. But XRP is totally against in BTC because of banking sector platform so most of the investors are move to some other platform. This year we are all expecting huge hype on upcoming bull run so BTC is enough to stay for small scale investment and ETH also good to hold for long term.

In this market, Bitcoin will certainly be the most popular cryptocurrency and invested by many people in this market. Pretty general. Its more about promotion of your shrimpy site whatever. If the article was at least a bit more unique and informative than other articles of the same content, It might have been quite okay, at the very least, acknowledged or accepted. But there's honestly nothing unique about it anymore. There isn't even any sources cited for the information the article had regarding the charts it showed.

I think it would be different depends on the era of what is hype on the current situation, back in 2017 many investors are investing on lending programs and it last until 2018 and everybody get rekt because of masssive scams, and last year was IEO on hype and this year we'll see what is coming to hype for investors

If you ask me the most popular cryptocurrency for investors, I would say that it is EOS. They raised over 4 billion dollars which was a record in itself. If you're asking about trading then it is obviously Bitcoin because of its volatility and popularity.

I assume the reason why BAT had so much attention is the fact that its more recent, even tho its not as high on market cap right now (and maybe one day it will better or worse), the amount of hype it got is still recent in peoples minds and that probably played a role in actually making that coin so high in popularity as well, overtime if it doesn't go higher I am sure it will lose popularity.

Rest is not really shocking, XRP being so popular is still upsetting to the people who know why XRP worths zero, yet at least knowing that BSV and BCH underperforms at least is actually a better feeling, good to see people not really loving them as much as the market cap suggests. Tether is probably hold not as investment since it is literally just dollars but probably by just moving towards fiat while they are waiting to get back into crypto market.

The most popular cryptocurrency for investors is obviously bitcoin because it is the best cryptocurrency in the market. Bitcoin is also the best when it comes to long term investment that makes a lot of investors put most of their funds here in bitcoin. Bitcoin is also famous in every social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and so on.

I guess OP didn't tend to do the right research because he was busy trying to make a thread that would lead to his article, i just don't know if that article was his but i am assuming since he posted a link too. An old traders already know what is the best coins to invest because they spend too much time looking for those coins that has a good outcome in the future.

Most traders is not all are going to find ways not to lose some coins means keeping BNB or other exchange coin which serves as tradings fees will likely to be kept in their exchange accounts. Many of us hers has Binance account then the most popular currency besides the obvious BTC I think is BNB and also the platform tokens like ETH and EOS. The two are very useful for users and developers as well.

Every investors own mentality and time line,Some want invest in Staking and some just hold crypto and sell when they get maximum price.Selection of good coins is maximum chance to gain maximum in returns.

I prefer for long term investment,ZEN,BNB,MONERO,TRX,ZRX and BCH.If any one want to inst in these coins must research deeply and go through the charts of the coins and then invest.

I think it is very obvious that bitcoin is the most famous and known cryptocurrency around the world. Those altcoins are just for a temporary source of income, from the word "alt" that means it is just an alternative for bitcoin. Although there are people that is not knowledgeable about the bitcoin for good investment, they should read about the uses and advantages of bitcoin compared to any other altcoins. Even if bitcoin is the most popular, it is very volatile in the market. But there are some altcoins that can be also a good coin to invest like ETH, LTC, and etc.

Market cap and price don't tell us everything about the coin or its future. I'm still baffled why people consider XRP a good investment. Who and why is still holding their XRP bags.
You have a coin that used to be worth more than 2 dollars and now it's 0.2 dollars! If Bitcoin went from 20 to 2 thousand people would be shitting bricks but with XRP it's all fine. :D

anyway, he is free to express his opinion on this matter. the article is more of informational purposes especially for newbies in crypto trading. but should not believe all the things stated. should do your own homework and uncover for yourself what's really in it for a coin to invest with. crypto investment has a lot of factors to consider with, and that will be learned by time and experience. you can't tell someone that a particular coin is good because of its price or market cap or whatever it is, just let him discover which one suits him best.

Obviously there we only get famous coins to hold by most investors because they are coins with a good reputation for long-term investment. Did not rule out a small portion of them will look for a fast investment such as investing in new projects that basically this type of investment is indeed very different and a good investor will only choose a safe coin for long-term investment.

Yes, I agree that there also are investors who would like to invest in coins which would give them dividends. Means coins which would allow staking so that they can earn a extra source of income from those coins. Even, I love to invest in such coins which would allow us to earn benefits from staking. Staking is really an profitable mean of payment.

Moreover, these kind of coins do have higher demand in the future markets so their price does not descend but it runs in an ascending manner so it is good investing in such coins. Also I like coins who have strong working product behind them as it would too create immense demand in the markets which would give investors immense profits.

For me, XRP is the best to hold this year. Better buy it now as its price were still low or mine some of it. Ripple is being accepted by a lot of transaction-required platforms hence there are no doubt it would pump sooner or later. Some do also gain attention to various investors such as BCH and BSV (that had a rough time after its fork yet growing back and kicking the market right now), ETH also (as it somehow rested after months of being stable on slowly going down), and ofcourse Bitcoin as this year would probably be its another peak year after it being accepted and be known by a lot of people.

These coins made it to the top ranked cryptocurrency because they are obviously popular and 90% of this coins can be found in majority of the investors porfolio.
Of course, not everyone who has a high risk tolerance to put a bulk investment in an uncertain coin mostly belonged to the top 100 and beyond.

Same thing here, i mostly check the coinmarketcap aboyt the good looking cryptocurrencies at the moment so that i can have a good coin in my portfolio but of course you will need to search on your own about the coins you will put in your portfolio, so basically you can check cmc to look for worthy crypto and then do some research to finalize your decision and then finally invest your money. Also if you are a newbie in investing you can ask for guide and advise to senior investors.

Most people will say bitcoin and that's true because people more familiar about bitcoin than other coins. This time people still use " split " method as their safety, bitcoin will combine with ethereum, XRP and EOS. I think we should see that bitcoin popularity not helping again, many new coins will comes up from country and back up by their banks. Before too late I think we should find alternative out side bitcoin market and I believe investor already did that. Forex is their alternative and bitcoin can't fight in that area.

The question to your perspective, have you done your research using credible method? Or you have just seen prices growth and hype in the market or coinmarketcap then simply say it is lending?

Usually people think that the traders prefer going for small cap as they can provide better profits. But unlike that usually the traders go for the most traded currency for the liquidity and comparatively more certainty.
I know a few experienced traders who always have half of the portfolio of btc. They do trade small caps but only when either the market is doing good or they have found out some recent news or update.

because investors often do holding for long-term. the most popular cryptocurrencies for investors I think for sure Bitcoin and Ethereum, these two coins are undeniably the popularity in the eyes of investors, the reason is that the two coins are the most talked about in various threads in this forum, that's why I can conclude like that. in addition there is also altcoin which is in the top 10 is also popular, becoming the choice of investors besides btc and eth.

Some of investors now are basing on coinmarketcap, so basically, kost in top list are popular to them and they will invest it no matter what. but in my case I still use ethereum as popular for all if we are basing in investors choices because a lot of knowledgeable investors are know ethereum and invest it with their own, unlike other new investors they invest for bitcoin only because bitcoin have huge price and not basing on what they actually learn from this currency.

It isnt surprising yet anyone can hold up coins according to their likes but theres one thing in common for sure.

it all depends on the people who invest, maybe what you say is your opinion but for me a good investment must be based on market action. if you look at the usefulness of ethereum it is quite good, but in the market action so far the price is still stuck in the range like that's all.

yeah i am also not a fan of Click bait so i prefer not to click every links specially when there is no serious matter around the the post and just sharing of thoughts.but like what you said it is listed in the top currencies in CMC so there is no further conversation about that.
i use bitcoin and all my crypto friends use bitcoin so if you talk here in Bitcointalk forum surely the answer is Bitcoin as is.

I think it's a stupid question, it's clear that bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency and cannot be compared to other cryptocurrency. As many speculations people say that all crypto prices depend on the ups and downs of the price of bitcoin, this concludes that bitcoin is the heart of other crypto. It is certain that bitcoin is very suitable to be invested and held in the long run.

Well, there are two types of cryptocurrencies that investors held by hand. In the right hand which intended for long term holding, the majority of that is holding Bitcoin and the other left hand that is altcoins that hold for a short term purpose and probably riding the movement of whales or even hype projects and sell it quickly when it will showing in the market price go down.

Indeed, we can't deny the fact that all of those coins are found on the top 20 CMC. And obviously Bitcoin has a massive adoption compared to altcoins.

Personally I hold mostly Bitcoin but also have some Ethereum and a couple of projects that I believe have really good potential: MANA and IOTA.  I think this year will be big for both of those as they develop their projects.

Yes, there are so many coins that we can use to invest our money but better choose only well known and trustworthy coins that's bitcoin. Bitcoin is one of the most famous altcoins to invest our money and it is having the potential to rise and give profit to the investor .  For me, the only bitcoin is the best coin but people say we can invest with contributions of bitcoin and ETH.

indeed many cryptocurrency can be chosen by various investors but I am sure they prefer coins that are very suitable for long-term investment or at least have the potential to be up and very expensive, one of which is bitcoin, I'm sure many investors will invest in bitcoin because in my opinion in bitcoin you can get a lot of profit because every year the price goes up.

I can see Bitcoin SV in the list. But mostly investors are holding bitcoins at the first place. Any investor you introduce and ask them to show their portfolio, you would find bitcoins in it. Each investor has bitcoins in his/her portfolio which are been holding for years. There also some some major altcoins which might give profits for the long run so investors also diversify their investment accordingly.

People are starting to have faith in bitcoins back which leads to a better future of bitcoins. Big whales too have accumulated the markets so we might really see immense growth in some of the top coins and that's the reason why makes the investors hold coins for long term in their portfolio.

Many people are now investing in BNB, XRP, ETH and most especially the favourite of all, which is bitcoin. But in order for us not to regret what will happen, although this coin are top in the cryptomarket, still everyone , even a beginner one should now what and how does the market flows, because it can be beneficial for everyone and it could be helpful soon when the market goes bear or goes bull run.

It is presented good and no wonder that Bitcoin still dominating the market in terms of demand and prices. The top 10 altcoins are on the follows which means also that more investors are giving their trust and market confidence to the old existing coins rather than to look for the new one.

In a certain thing that we can't is that old projects are continuously performing well and still be attracting investors even of several times that they suffer market crisis and dumps. What investors are looking for is the coin that shows a sustainable market and not even played by hypes.

I like how the study shows which top coins are hugely pumped by a small % of capital and user. This is why market cap means nothing basically. You get these oversized creations that got artificially pumped and will only be making lows for the years to come. BNB and ETH makes sense as they are the only useful coins as for now. The rest is 'will be super useful some day in the future' category and this is quite risky option to me as people tend to go tulip mode on these things for long without devs showing any real progress. Who cares they've been collecting money for 2 years and not delivering, it's the internetz and EOS is sure to come, right? They said it would.

Looking at the graph it all looks like bitcoin to me.

We are talking about investing here and not trading.
Because if we do, then Tether will be on the first list of it. It had the more usage but the problem is there is no movement.
Investors would not like that but traders do for means of safety whenever needs withdrawal.

Other coins though like BNB found a huge market thanks to the hype of their exchange.
The price of it suddenly blew up making more investors buy it without any doubts.

Even if you suggest a good coin to them, they will still choose and stick with Bitcoin. The number of people who invested in Bitcoin keeps on increasing and if you look at the market, it is still dominating among other cryptocurrencies. Actually even me, I have more investment in bitcoin than other cryptocurrencies because I am more confident that I can make more profit if I put half of my funds on Bitcoin. Maybe if we're going to base it in the market I guess the most popular cryptocurrency for investors are the top 10 to 50 coins in the market and it's just my opinion.

Well, Bitcoin is always on the top of cryptocurrencies, that's why most of investors  prefer btc and maybe his followers like, Ethereum, Bitcoin SV , Ripple..ect due to most of them are linked or connected to the strongest currency .
In fact, I guess it is better to invest in some crypto who are existed on top 20, try to pick the ones who have a low price and an acceptable value of market cap ( more than 1 billion dollars ) like, Tron, Tether, EOS, Link, XTZ. They are definitely appropriate for a long term profit.

Of course, bitcoin is no. 1 to investors and traders alike. If you are trading on Binance, BNB is also a good one to Hold aside from bitcoin. If you are fascinated with dapps, Ethereum is a must also. Those are p very promising and popular among them. You can also go with other altcoins but of course with caution.

Very interesting reading, I think that altcoins investors can see them with the eyes of obtaining more technology, more innovation and until they can take some love, but it is well known that the most recommended Investment will always be Bitcoin, and in some way following the chronology of it, the most reliable altcoins that are somewhat more resistant to death can be ETH and Monero.

ETH for being considered the second after Bitcoin and Monero for its anonymous transaction characteristics and for being handled like a fish in the water in the DarkWeb.

That is a concern, when someone or even an investor asks for advice about what coins are the most chosen or most popular to invest, what worries is when they ask the wrong person, they will eventually suffer from investing in coins and projects which is wrong and at least I've had a case like that in the past. Thus, if we are still new or just want to start investing in this market, then it is enough to choose bitcoin or top ranking coins listed, because then our investment will be safe because it is a popular coin to invest.

The one that I was most surprised about was Link, I really didn't expected it to see it there. BAT is around 31th in the rankings right now but I can understand why people hold it, yet Link is 17th and it has been out for a while, if people wanted to get rid of it, they would have done that already, so I think they might actually think of it like something that may go further in the future.

I didn't looked at it the way people do so far, maybe I should try to get some Link myself as well. Its nice to know my portfolio looks a lot like others as well, if I had to make top 10 of my own portfolio I would probably only change BAT and Link, I don't do tether or bsv as well but not many other people neither as far as I can see from here, I have like 6 of the coins in asset popularity, just no BAT, no Link, no BCH and no TRX but I will probably get TRX this year as well.

if we ask someone then we must make sure in advance whether he is the right person or not, the goal is if he is the right person then we can get a little help in the journey while studying.

there is no way that other currency can take it away from bitcoin not until mass adoption happens because from there people will decide on what crypto they will support forever.

Im not surprise with the lists of popular cryptocurrencies for investors when I visit the blog. Its obvious that bitcoin is the top choice for most of us because this is the primary crypto that started it all.

When it comes to altcoins I think majority prefer to invest in popular alts because you have the assurance it wont turn to shitcoins even how long you hold it. Unlike if you chose to invest in new coins, there's a possibility that it might delisted in exchanges especially during bearish market when the coins are struggling to recover.

You got a very good point there, when a certain coin is delisted in an exchange, that could be the end of its journey, especially if that project spend a lot of money just to get listed in a decent exchange but was not able to survive so exchange has no choice but to delist them.

It's wise if we look more on the solid coins which has a decent trading volume and is listed in different big exchanges.
They are way safer and yes good for long term.

I'd actually argue that high stability isn't always the greatest, as it's (in my opinion) somewhat boring when crypto markets start to flatten out temporarily, because a lot of the trading opportunities that we capitalize on around here arise with volatility, although we perceive this as both good and also bad depending on what your position(s) are. A lot of people also start reaching towards using leverage during periods of stability, which also isn't good because a lot of these people end up getting screwed when volatility inevitably cranks back up again.

but maybe there are point that popularity is not only for those who has biggest market cap,because it can be owned by small counts of individual with high amounts while there are lower ranking currencies but supported by many people though they only hold small amounts.

That's maybe because you are looking for long term success, bitcoin is the strongest while ETH is the best altcoin when it comes to ranking.

As for me, I also trust the two but I start adding more coins in my portfolio so I could  also benefit on the success of others as in the long run it would not only be BTC and ETH that will dominate in the market, other coins also have a chance to rise especially BNB or Binance coin which is so profitable to invest.

As far as the analysis in the article goes, it's not really offering any great insights since all of the coins in the charts represent the top ones on coinmarketcap anyway.  The fact that their market caps are large gives at least some indication that they're all popular and that people own them, and you could have surmised that just by looking at the top 10 on CMC.

I have been really disappointed by how ethereum has been flat for sometime now. I had big expectations from a few coins among which one of them was Clam coin, which I don't know if anyone even knows about it now. I had big expectations on Ethereum but while Eth hasn't gone down too much, I don't see a reason of the rise either. the ICOs being built on it was a bubble which now has pretty much settled down.

Well, BNB is only Binance limited, I mean it's just to cover the trading fees and while it's pretty solid and won't go down I am quite sure but at the same time I see no reason why BNB will go up too much but yeah it's one coin to keep an eye on.

I think we all agree with your opinion, even sometimes we get delay and high fees in withdraw process, bitcoin still become our priority in every crypto activity. Some people abandon bitcoin and try altcoin because delay and fees but they will split asset and replace it into bitcoin too, so when people say not use bitcoin again that is non sense. All coin change because bitcoin movement, don't deny it but use it.

Just compare coinmarketcap's list to OP's list, first 7 coin are the same and on another ones, only places are changed a little bit.
Asset Popularity is good but not very accurate statistics because for example everyone got Bitcoin Cash after bitcoin's fork and this means a lot of people own bitcoin cash just because of bitcoin's popularity and we can't say from that statistics that BCH is popular itself.

Not quite surprising at all. We've known bitcoin making a loud sound on different places, so no wonder why there is much people are hooking with it now especially this year that an anticipated bitcoin halving will occur on May. Bitcoin dominance is up to 60% and continue to get higher every month, which says that bitcoin is generally invested. Investors these days do not look for high capitalization or any as long as it is showing a good run in the chart and possible in makinh profit. So undoubtedly bitcoin now is the most invested cryprocurrency, with its possessed popularity guess nothing in the market will go above it.

BUT if we are talking aside from bitcoin, surely it is the ethereum just noticed how transactions are made in ethereum blockchain plus the doubled user gain of some ethereum related applictions.

That is right because I remember when within friends we talk about cryptocurrency we only talk about bitcoins and altcoins though have made a big steps towards success I don't think they have still find their place in the market. Problem with ethereum is that it's seen more a platform to develop coins and ICOs rather than a payment method and now that most of the ICOs bubble is busted, there seems no real power in ethereum although it still is among the best ones out there.

I don't think investors use USDT much because of the stable price it offers and hence not much profits but yes a lot of holders in crypto use USDT to manage their stability.

I believe that each investor in his own way determines the benefit of investing his money in a particular cryptocurrency and each one selects coins for investment in his own way.  To date, I have not a single bitcoin left, because I decided to invest it in other cryptocurrencies, including ethereum.  But besides this coin, I also chose the Glitzcoin coin, which is on the stellar blockchain, as well as Jur and Pundi X, on the erc20 blockchain.  I believe that this is one of my main investments.
