Thought I’d share this coin that was recently brought to my attention by the makers of Alpen Coin. They appear to be a Swiss based outfit who’s made this first physical Bitcoin (coin) there.

they have a portion of the page where you can search your serial number to get the public key - it stops at 80 - not sure if that means they have only loaded 80 coins to date or they just have not updated their database past 80 coins.

there are some within that first 80 serial numbers that have been redeemed within minutes of their initial loading. Some then reloaded again and then redeemed again as well.

perhaps - I spoke with the guy over there by the name of Frank and he was really surprised to see interest stemming from outside of Switzerland and stated he was not aware their site had been posted here on bitcoin talk.org - their original intent was to develop a website for their friends and family so they could buy them and have access to their public key and funding verification.

He stated they will be working on adding an English version to the site and also stated that the coins are very much a "work in progress" still and admits that they have not loaded a lot of coins yet and their intent is to keep them as affordable as possible.

If I get more from them, I will share it.

I have a sample or two coming to me.  I will test including peeling and redeeming when they arrive.  I do not know much about Alpen Coin other than they (Frank of Alpen Coin) contacted me on the Instagram and offered to send me a coin.  They did not ask me to do a review or anything in return however I will post a review here once I have had a look.

I was not lucky enough to get free coins - I had to pay for mine, so I am hoping they are genuine and of good craftsmanship/quality.

Ah very good info I appreciate you sharing this.  I have been in touch with Frank over the last few days but we did not get in to any of those specifics.  Did they mention at all how many were made/going to be made in total ? Obviously they made over 80 via the photos on the site where you can see serial numbers higher than that. 

I did ask him some more specifics such as quantity and size, but he has not answered those yet. And yes, I believe that they have made more but maybe not yet funded them - he did say:

quite possible that a lot of coins are made just not a lot of funding done yet - the over all price comes out to just barely over 10 a coin - counting the .0005 funding.

Hundreds of thousands would be quite a few coins for a maker not looking to supply a nation with it's fiat currency.  My guess is they probably made around 500 or so.  Can't really complain about much when the coins cost about 11 bucks and have 5 bucks worth of bitcoin loaded on to it.  Steal of a deal if you ask me.

I got some further communication from Frank at AlpenCoin

Looks like 400 coins initially - 200 shiny and 200 matte. The coins are 39mm in diameter and 3mm thick. correction: just got an email they are 30mm - the 39mm he sent previously was a typo on his part.

I will be getting one of the matte ones sent for me to peel/review, so I will share that here when it arrives.

And if all goes well for the 400 coins he made, he said he will do some more but that they would be different.

It is not known who is behind this company? They only emphasize is that they are from Switzerland.
Does anyone have more information about them?  ???

how did you get the addresses? those are all the ones you bought?  or did you do it all via that look up tool on the site?

as for mintage he told me there would be 200 with the bright finish and 200 with a matte finish.

If there are 400 coins minted as they claim, then they have not all been updated as of yet. I will check periodically and update list accordingly.

I think they are still in the process of assembling the coins. I think the OP was in super early on the starting up of these coins. So a lot is still being done as each day passes. I checked the serial numbers previously and some of the early ones had multiple ins/outs - and as suggested might have been test coins. but the numbers did not go even as high as you have now. So, they are either just funding them and/or just updating the site with newer information.

Damn, I'm always too late for this kind of fun. How much is per 1 coin + delivery to Europe (Norway)? If you cannot pay in BTC, what currency they accept CHF only? Can I pay with PayPal? It's too late for me to buy from the website as they look like they are sold out (my french is a bit better than my sumerian) or out of stock.
They should be named "LoyceV's Coins"... c'mon, somebody should explain them why.

when i checked just a few minutes ago they were not sold out. I did check - you dont have to always assume I am a dumbass either. things can change quickly. I have been in contact with the maker numerous times today and he also made no mention of them being sold out. It could be that someone just make a large order as well.

I am surprised to have seen so many sell out so quickly.  I guess we really don't know how many were made or that were up for sale. I might have just a few singles available and will let everyone know if I do or not when they are received.

There were only max 200 up for order and Ffrankie claims to have ordered half of them (100) - not sure how many were actually put up or if he pulled them/marked them as "sold out" because he was doxxed here. I hope it was the former not the latter. He was pretty upset in his emails. I did try to explain to him it was not me that doxxed him and that it was requested for the info to be removed and that it indeed had been removed.

I was actually talking to another member yesterday about the page and was going thru it, he saw them as sold out while I did not. A few minutes later when I refreshed, I also saw them as sold out. So it was pretty quick indeed that they sold out.

If all goes well though and he moves forward with the next batch of 200, they should be up soon.

Yet you merit'd the doxx. You guys may have very well scared this guy away from sales outside of his friends and family (which seems like his original intention). There is such a thing as being excited about something and then theres being WAY too excited and going overboard.

You are right, I did merit the post but not because of his private/personal information - I saw the links to public works that he had made (which my prior post was stating I would ask him about any involvement in other works) I assumed the address and contact info was for his work at AlpenCoin, So, I did not realize his personal address and personal contact info was in the post. When he (Frank) pointed out it was that it was his personal address and requested it to be removed is when I was made aware that it was his private/personal info not his public/work related info. I conveyed his request to minerjones who then removed it as per his request. It was sent to LoyceV to remove from his archives as well, and to TryNinja to remove from his archives as well.

I do not know if MJ knew it was personal/private information or not, I would think that he would not purposefully do such a thing. I do agree that was overboard and it may have scared away a coin maker - We will see when he releases the next batch.

I received my coins today. I will share a video of my opening the package and reviewing the coins. I will preface with an apology as part of the video the coins were out of the screen partially (my grandson wanted to record and was giving me thumbs up all the way smh lol kids). I did take some photos as well. There was an issue with one coin where the holo was detached - I did speak with Frank about it, he thinks it had to do with the way they were packaged that perhaps that caused it to catch and be tore off on the coin holder (there is a slight lip on the inside). I then took another video of my looking the coin serial number up to get the public address to verify balance and then how to load the private key and retrieve funds via Electrum. I have since sent the funds out of that address as I am sure some tech savvy people could pull the private key from the video :P

Thanks for the videos and update Stryfe. In the future(or possibly even now) I would be careful showing any address (sender or recipient) aswell as any tracking numbers. Most of us here are harmless but in the future there may be some more nefarious actors that could use this information to their advantage. I know you're fairly public about your identity with your business ID number and whatnot but we need to be setting a standard for newcomers that might also want to make their own unboxing videos.
Also a very slight cringe moment in your video when you ripped the bubblewrap/tape off from the rest of the package made me think about the ripped packaging on your Ledger Pizza Edition lol, beeeeeeee more careful!!!!! I shuddered watching that part ahah.

thank you for your input - the tearing of the bubble wrap was from a non -sealed package and was loosely in place with 4 pieces of tape. I was not as careful as I could have been maybe but it was also not the same as the pizza ledger at all, that was fully encased in bubble wrap with packing tape tightly around it. I have probably over 100 deliveries of items and the only one that had any damage to it that could have possibly been me is the ledger you speak of. Me and LC resolved that.

ahh ok - I did not know his purchase was unsuccessful - I only saw that he posted about buying that many. I thought that might have been what pushed them to being out of stock. The first 200 were sold out in just a few days though.

Looking at the sticker on the picture and with the feedback for the issues with a fallen one while unpacking, do you guys think it's OK quality? I mean if they are falling that easily is it still worth it? I understand that the demand was pretty high for what was expected, but if it was me the producer, I would delay the delivery a bit  but send a quality products, not just throw thing in the bag and send them over just like that.

I will see if i can get pictures of the way it was packaged - the coins were placed between two cardboard pieces that had a plastic window - I have seen coins in these before but usually the cardboard peices are stapled to hold the coin in place - these were not. I wonder if the lip inside rubbed against the holo and caused it to come off?

as I did not actually peel one, I am not sure how well the holos adhere to the coins. He did state he was going to send me another coin with better packaging (I suggest airtites) I am not sure what the new packaging is though. I am also not sure if it is one of the shiny brass that he is sending or if I will be waiting until the matte finish ones are done to get one.

He had also stated he may send one of the shiny brass ones in the second order I placed - however, that order was not for myself it was for Hookzup1 whose order shipped yesterday. Could do a peel on that one (I am not wanting to peel any of my remaining 4 coins at this time) if Hookzup1 receives it. I am curious how easily they do peel off - though as seen in the pictures, once peeled you cannot simply put it back on without it being noticeable.

edit - I think ChiBitCTy is getting one to peel as I think Lesbian Cow is as well --- I could be wrong though.


gloves received. I did just cotton gloves, makes it very hard for me to hold the coins though - had carpal tunnel in both wrists so fingers are sometimes very numb and not very sensitive. let me know if there are better gloves.

Thanks for sharing again.  Nice looking coins.  I like the size of them.  I also want to applaud you on the gloves, they are a must ! :)  I'm heading to my mailbox here before long, hoping to see some coins in it. 

Not this again Chicago, cotton gloves leave fuzzies behind.  Non powdered nitrile is best if you want gloves but naked and just handling the rim is 100% acceptable.  Most professional coin dealers go naked as they feel the risk of dropping the coin with gloves outweighs having gloves.

Edit to add:  I am not getting a test sample this round as they sold out prior to shipping it and ran out.  They are sending one of the next, matte, versions.

Honestly, the packaging is the worst part - I was going to auction a set of 5 but the packaging was so shoddy I decided not to. The problem was he uses really cheap cardboard coin slips that either don't quite fit perfectly or the heat is making the adhesive not stick. Anyhow, a few coins were starting to fall out but the adhesive held them in place.

Just for the record, I always wear nitrile gloves for anything precious. These being zinc alloy, although very shiny, and low-value, I just didn't want to deal with going to buy a new box since I just ran out a few weeks ago.

Also, they are fairly easy to just slide into sa-flips or whatever flips you may be using. Don't really need air-tites I guess, not sure what I'm going to do with them but if anybody knows the airtight size, lmk.

I will say this, he did acknowledge that the packaging needed improvement and has stated that he will be shipping future orders out differently.

Like everyone is saying  Packaging could have been done a little bit better  ;D, but all stickers are still intact and the quality is nice so will definitely be ordering more when they're  available again.

I think these air-tites might work for it "T30.6 Air-Tite Direct Fit Capsule  US Half Dollars"  per the air-tite website they are 30.6mm and the coins are 30mm

Thanks. I'm so sick of ordering airtites for some of these coins and not having them fit though... I can't even find one for a certain USA coin I'm trying to restore a boxed set of lol... JP's corner is usually my airtite people, but even they can't find the right one for me (yet).   I'll let MJ or someone try one first and confirm. another option would be to go with a larger air-tite and use the foam rings to fit a 30mm, right? I have received several coins like that and I do prefer that to hearing them rattle. A perfect example is the 3 bitcoin pennies I recently received, they rattle around - yet the one I got from MJ was a larger air-tite with foam ring and his bcp did not rattle - I will looking to getting details from him on the size used, if he knows, and replace the others with matching ones that keep the coins from rattling around.

Lol I’m sick of ordering air-tites for everything too. When I receive my coins I will use my caliper and let you know the exact size. I always use https://www.air-tites.com/.  If they don’t have a direct fit, they’ll have foam inserts to help make it snug.

if it helps, I did measure mine - the only hard one to measure was the thickness in the center because of the depression on the back and the face is actually raised - I did not want to scratch the coins so I did not measure that. so the last picture is just of the edge.

I did order some of the 30.6 ones but after receiving several coins that I have gotten from here that are in the airtites with foam rings, I think I much prefer that to the ones without - unless the fit is perfect. I dont like them going clankity clank in the air tites - that's for sure. I will have to see how the 30.6 fit or I may just order the 39's with the 29 foam ring.

Someone who's in direct communication with the coin maker let's ask how the key pairs are generated and handled. Let's start asking the right questions.

For what it’s worth my order stated they would be shipped empty and funded upon arrival once I receive them. I do not yet have mine in hand but will update once I do.

while someone pointed out that the site states that they cannot send funded coins to the US - I did not see that when I was ordering and I was told they would be funded - and my 5 arrived funded - in the US.

That being said, I helped others in the US place their orders and theirs were not funded. Also, on the site, where you pull your public address, it specifies that all serial numbers will reflect a balance of .0005 BTC

I agree with this, I was going to reach out to Frank about the other 10 I helped someone order that arrived empty and was scraping all the addresses and pulling balances when I saw that others were also asking about it.

What are the right questions to ask?

1. how are the key pairs generated and handled?
2. why are some US ones being received as funded while others are not?
3. will the unfunded ones eventually be funded?

I received 2 emails from Alpen Coin in total. The first was to confirm my order and the second was letting me know which coins I was to be receiving ( serial numbers ). It also states that the coins would be received unfunded, and funded upon confirmation of receiving coins.

I will wait to hear from others whom are reaching out to Alpen.

when I ordered - I got 2 emails - the first when it was received - the second when it shipped - never said anything about funding or listing my serial numbers - mine were all over the place, non sequential. but based on the dates they were funded weeks before I received them.

Sounds as if the process was/is being refined as it goes.

sounds like the first few orders got sent out funded before he realized he cannot send to US funded? I am not sure of the rules around this - I know for US companies to sell funded, they have to be registered as Money Transmitters or something akin to that.

as for the ones that got damaged/peeled during shipping he is asking you that you please email him and he will work to fix it.

Ok, so apparently ALL coins are to be funded - Frank replied to me on Instagram and said to just send him an email with the coin numbers and he will load them.

good idea on linking them, I did look them all up and post their status on funding and such but did not think to keep the links.

The site I used allowed me to just add all the addresses at once and it pulled their status in one shot.

Still yet to have received my coins.  Heading back to the Post Office today, maybe today is my lucky day ( or maybe USPS lost my package like they have so many others of late ).

It's pretty easy - Just go to https://www.alpencoin.ch/public-key and input the missing numbers, the copy the bitcoin address for each serial number. Links are no big deal, I can do that part with an excel macro.

I already pulled all the public addresses doing this - my post is several up higher than yours - I pulled the public address and their balances - I only did not post a link.

Received my coins today.  Unfortunately like others they were not packaged very well and due to a rip in the top of the envelope 1/3 of the coins ordered had fallen out.  I spoke with Alpen and they are going to make up for the lost coins. That said I really like these coins.  Pretty cool coins, smaller, have a good feel to them.

(On a side note USPS is absolutely worthless. Within the matter of 1 day I had a package where tracking said delivered but never was, they delivered this envelope ripped open, and never left a notice in my PO Box for another item received, so I had to ask for it.  They've lost 4 packages of mine so far during all this).

were yours pre-funded? wonder if someone actually stole the ones he sent you - did he state which numbers were missing? would be curious to see. To see, if the funds are later removed from those coins if they were pre-funded.

Nice same here but with white. They are a bit tough to fit completely snugly but they work fine. ;)

did you go with the 29 mm or the 30 mm rings? and I think it is the thickness maybe the front of the coin is slightly raised - not much as the raised portion fits into the recessed area on the back of a second coin. but still enough to maybe make it hard to close fully.

And yes, I believe you are right, the thickness is just a micro-hair off, but still work pretty fine. Had to push the foam in evenly on all sides to get a snug fit, but whatever, I wore gloves this time haha. ;D

what numbers did you get? mine were all over the place, 15,18, 62 (traded for 76), 78 and 80.

I had two shipments - One was like an assortment of 1-00, then a bunch of ordered/numbered sets in the high range of the 100, like 85+ etc...

As for the low numbers, I can't remember and they are in another room - I think I have 2 of the 1-5 numbers tho. They are currently in a bag for future shipment to ICG. Maybe stupid to slab such low denom coins, but I like them a lot actually! ;D

yes - I believe Frank has told me his intention is to make coins that are usable, shareable and cost effective - If you go with precious metals, then nobody uses them, they hoard them for the precious metals and BTC stored on them.

That being said, he may be open to it with enough suggestion and maybe in doing as a limited run? I will give him the suggestion.

the packaging was much better - the coins were individually bagged, then put into a second bag with the COA - I did recommend using a bubble envelope or some fashion of keeping the coins from smacking against each other in shipping if the carrier is rough with the envelope. That being said mine went from Switzerland to Florida, USA and were not damaged in the least.

I also recieved mine today, to replace the ones that peeled in the first shipment, and i  agree this was a much better packaging set up. they showed up perfect thanks so much. You know youre early when it comes with a hand written note as well

lol I keep all the notes too, got 1 from Bobby, 1 from Chris and now 2 from Frank - well and like 25 from minerjones - he labels everything because I always tend to miss something in his packaging. lol

So, I spoke with AlpenCoin last night and helped them to use the "pay to many" feature so that they can do the funding much quicker and more efficiently and well for less sats as minerjones pointed out.

these are currently being sold as rolls of 20 - there were 21 rolls made. They do not currently come with holograms but he did state he was working at making some DIY holograms.

whether he later sells these as individual coins, I do not know.

I am sure Alpencoin will comment soon, I only posted it because I saw it on their site.

Thank you all. The new coin is a collaboration with Jabid. We were inspired by the Swiss Banks and Vaults, the "Bitcoin Citadel", the QR Code of a Bitcoin public address and the Swiss Alps. And you can imagine that we like BitcoinPenny and BYOB.

I thought I'd post this image of my new prototype. It's an automatic Swiss watch, with a Swiss movement.

I'm trying to get the key engraved on the oscillating weight and covered with a special hologram. It would be protected by the waterproof case (10ATM / 100 meters). A bit like Kialara.

This prototype has taken me months to design and produce. I'll let you know if I manage to get the key engraved on the movement, and if the movement still works.   ;)

I also had a variant with the public key on the dial.

I don't want to sell the watch, just share the idea.

Bitcoin is time.

I like it - would want one to add to the rest of my Alpen's - if you ever do sell them.

I really like the watch. Great work.

One of the things that popped into my mind is that it would be really cool to have Block time there, either instead or along the "normal" time.

It would need to be connected to the internet though, either directly or indirectly, for example with a Bluetooth connection that syncs with your phone or laptop, or an NFC connection where you need to tap your phone to update.

Thinking about it, it might be a bit too much hassle to add the block time, but it would be so cool to see it on your watch.

Please elaborate on your "Money is time" phrase, it intrigues me.


Block time (or block height) is superior to actual time.

I think having my clocks switched to block-height (or at least a peripheral device) may be a more prudent time keeping mechanism opposed to general time.  

I wonder if an analog block clock could be built and worn on the wrist as if it were a Rolex. Pearl dials, gold two tone but it only keeps bitcoin block height.  

On a different note,

bitcoin is more than just a monetary energy network. bitcoin is almost like a time machine that is forever protected by computational supremacy.  With ordinals attached to PDFs that can be burned onto the blockchain. Documents can be in their untampered form for all of eternity.

Just imagine the implications of being able to see an untampered and unrevised version of history hundreds of years from now. The history books will be rewritten several times over by that point, but the bitcoin blockchain ordinals and transactions will be available for our future generations of curious minds to explore.

I am still not sure if it's smart to put the priv key in the movement. makes sense for waterproofing, ... My first idea was to put only the Bitcoin address on the dial.  But need more tests with the qr code, so that it is readable. and not sure about generating priv key and then engraving it.

I think this is a cracking idea of having the private keys in the movement and covered by a hologram.
Being a mechanical watch I would say that there would have to be a weight compensation for that.

The idea makes the watch a perfect carry anywhere your Bitcoin, particularly abroad or anywhere.

At first I was thinkng the watch face was plain enough but if the keys are to be inside its best to keep
the Bitcoin theme subtle ^{with the second hand and hour marks in Orange}

First off, I wanted to say, I absolutely love the design of the watch, this is something I am very interested in.   One idea that I had though, was rather than having both the public and private keys in one device that is CLEARLY bitcoin related....  What about a matching non-Bitcoin item that could host the private key?   What I was thinking was a modern version of a poison ring with the private key hidden under a hologram.  Something like this:

So, have a watch and a ring paired in a set.  The watch hosted the public key and clearly was Bitcoin, and then the ring did not indicate Bitcoin on the outside, but on the inside was the hologram and the private key.   This way you could wear both to transport your Bitcoin, or wear just the watch to show it off without risking loss of your private keys.  To me a clandestine ring would be the ultimate Bitcoin wearable wallet.

I was curious to get others thoughts.

If the public key was the QR code on the front of the watch, and then on the back of the inside of the casing, you could engrave the private key, so it can be unscrewed and retrieved without touching the movements, if you included the tool to unscrew the back of the watch with the purchase it would be pretty cool. Just my two cents. I love the idea.

I really like this idea, but have 2 concerns:

What if I need the watch serviced?  I am going to have to trust someone with my private keys. (Maybe your idea of providing the tool  to  unscrew the back might work, if the back had the key engraved (even better if it were encased in a hologram).

Also, I agree I like the Bitcoin reference on the watch, but if the keys are on the inside and it is known, it would be a theft target.

I still prefer 2 options:

I understand that it's a rather absurd idea to carry the private key around with you. That's why the watch has to be discreet.
By wearing a Rolex, for example, you also become a target.  It wouldn't be an everyday watch if it contained the private key.

Another solution would be to simply place the qr code of the public key on the dial.  No private key in the watch. What's more, the customer could create the keys, and simply transmit the bitcoin address to the manufacturer. Let's not forget : "not your keys, not your coins".

I understand all the issues related to the private key and watch maintenance. These are questions some members of the forum ask themselves when they want to have a coin graded.

I like your watch design - as for the private key - put an encrypted pk on the watch - like BIP38 and then you don't have to cover it or worry if it is stolen - they would still need the passphrase you have in your head. (of course back that up somewhere at home)

on a side note, I am looking to get some rings like what you have pictured in the near future to do some laser work on :)

yes! you can! as a note my laser doesnt cut into the silver noticably you can barely feel it - its more like etching it. if you want deeper cutting styled engraving - mrmojorising might be a better possibility.

Love that raw ring design. Something I thought about getting into a while ago but haven't followed thorugh so far. There are a few companies accepting custom designs.
But something cool that you come up with would definitely be something I'd be interested in.
