That's my first thought when I saw the list.
I was expecting like HongKong/Macau or US to top the list.
If gambling is prevalent in Australia, why is it the that known gambling capital in the world is Macau?
Or maybe we are missing something here. The list is the losses per adult.
Does it mean that gamblers in Australia are high spenders? Because we're talking about average expenditure per adult.

I think the first chart is more on the nationality and the other is overall gambling activity. I do not know if that could be the case but sometimes data from other people does not match maybe because of different target. Another thing I have noticed is the other chart seems to not match the other one because the first one is more on average loss of an individual while the other seems to be annual loss as a whole.

I wonder how Macau is not a part of any of these two lists!! Macau is a country whose economy is based on gambling businesses where 40% of their GDP is delivered by gambling! But these are really land based casinos which means the numbers here show the tip of the iceberg. Due to the social taboos around the world, a lot of people don't really visit the land based casino and these group of people actually enjoys the online casinos from the comfort of their home! And it is really difficult to capture that number correctly!

Secondly, I see US is missing from the list as well! US has an entire city for gambling and it is a prime destination of gamblers and tourists from around the world. I am sure everyone wants to visit Las Vegas at least once in their life! So I seriously feel the list is flawed!

i think the first chart is more accurate because they dont list china but on the second chart they list china and it place on the second spot but faik china has a strong restriction when it comes to gambling within thier country but i heard that china or chinese is the number one supplier of gambling machines in most parts of the world and they also run and own a gambling business outside .

the two charts have a similiarity when it comes to the country of spain because they both list the spain at the bottom .

Guess that those highrollers are come from australia or united states mostly, not the macau citizen obviously.

It is always about culture, australian loves gmble so much due its culture in the past but some people also denied it and says it was not about the history but it was because of the marketing and the industry grow so fast followimg with government support as it gives them a great income through taxation which unfortunately causing this big stats in australia .

Not looking at the stats, I would say that US is still the top spot and then Australia in the APAC region. This two are heavily on gambling, with so many sporting events being held on those countries reguarly, you name it, from tennis to golf tournaments.

I'm not really sure about EU though, but I suspect that Germany or Spain in the top in that region. Macau is just small in population, so even if they have high luxuries casinos, only a few can be called high rollers.

good to know, but it would be better if you could share the most recent study conducted about it. both the study you posted was released in a different year. one is in 2017 and the other is in 2016.

isn't Macau still part of China? as far as I know even though Macau have its own economy, government, etc.. they were still considered as part of China. correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't really think so because these countries mentioned here play gamble based on the environment, it's obvious that we have different gambling which a country likely to play with seriousness and assurance hoping that they will win, like in my country many people adventure into soccer gambling from eighteen years upwards, which both father and mother go into soccer gambling center to play bet, that does not mean that they have higher rate in gambling, the statistics should have been specified the particular gambling, normally every country are into gambling now so no one can tell the highest gambling country because you have not move around the countries to know the rate other adventure into gambling.

The first rankings that OP shared is divided by the total adult population that's why US wasn't even in the top 10 and the graph only showed the total gambling losses per country which is like a piece of the puzzle. They are still both in the top list, if you check the second website that OP linked and scroll down you'll see Macau way ahead of the rest in terms of gambling revenue.

Macau is actually an administrative region of China. It has its own government and economic system so I believe that Macau is already part of the list under the Country of China. Macau is known to be the best place to gamble in China and that's the reason why it has the highest rate of gamblers on the first chart despite the illegality of gambling in some parts of their country.

I saw the first list and was kinda amazed to not find USA in the list but then saw the other. I think US really has most gambling players because after all "Las Vegas" ;)

I think India too has a fair amount of many players in large volumes but since there are laws against gambling (offline ones) hence I think they are not recorded officially when players gamble money on online casinos!

I agree, so I guess the 2nd graph is somehow closer to reality.  U.S. has one of the most famous gambling spots in the world so no doubt that the biggest amount of losses in gambling would come from the US. I am not shocked seeing China and Japan, Australia, in our country the most common foreign gambler we see are Chinese, Japanese, Aussies, and American. Even Chinese people operate casino hubs in our country.

We don't know if that list is a valid source that gives us the valid list of the 10 countries that gamble the most.
I expected to see Macau or the USA like @TimeTeller says to be the first place on that list.
But out of that list, we can see that the amount of money is bigger, and I think that amount of money will still increase from time to time.
I think gambling is popular in many countries, no matter what the country is and not just for that list because people already tend to gamble for a long time ago.

Both rankings are probably just measuring the numbers provided by registered casinos and other gambling establishments. What they cannot measure in so many countries around the world are those which are not reflected on legal books. And I believe those legal figures in gambling will be dwarfed by the illegal ones.

I'm not living in any of the countries listed above but I know very well that the revenue coming from the government-regulated gambling industry, at least in my country, is too small compared to the proceeds coming from illegal gambling operations.

2.The gambling industry in many countries is deeply connected with the tourism industry.Many gamblers in Macao or Las Vegas,for example,can be foreign tourists and not citizens of those countries.
I'm not surprised that China and USA are at the top of the list.After all those countries have a history in gambling and a huge middle class,that is able to spend lot of money on gambling. 

I don't read lmao, I almost thought Australia was the top country that gambles the most, turns out it was the country that lost the most in gambling. Reading the article though, it seems like that the Australia topped on is average losses per head, so basically means that Australians bet more compared to US citizens, but US has a much larger population which is why it ranks at the top when looking at the losses per country. Still though I actually thought the US would top both, since I believe the US is one of the countries that gamble the most. Turns out US citizens are a bit more controlled in their gambling tendencies

Yes indeed, but it is losses per adult means per gambler right? so it means an individual loss 1m$? it is too much I think, but it only shows that Australia is a rich country, imagine how much taxes does that individual is paying every withdrawal, but I thought US or any other Asian country will top the biggest losing amount. I am not that surprised with this list although I thinl it is not only Greece from Easterm Europe there are many more Balkan countries whose gambling is in their Dna.The only country I am surprised from this list is Singapore which I know it is a very well developed place to live and work and there is no real need for gambling there.

But when it comes to gambling in average statistically australian are the one who spend the most compared to any other country , yes statistically mathematically.

Has to do with avg wages for sure, as most of the listed countries are either rich or progressing very strong currently. Surprised that Spain isn’t even on the list since they influenced most of the gambling habits of the countries they have colonized in the past. Not only that but their proximity to known gambling hubs in Europe, too. China, on the other hand, is undoubtedly one on the top of the list. Those dudes know how to gamble big and well, especially the wealthy businessmen who are set for life.

OP should change the link to the latest update because the stat changes from time to time, in this link China is the number one and Australia is nowhere in the top 3, I wonder why suddenly China surge to number one after four years and why Australia drop of the top, although they are listed as number one in the countries with huge losses per capita.

I agree. I thought MACAU is on the top list since a lot of people gambles there even the tourist. Last year, they almost made a $35 million revenue that makes them worthy of the name World's largest gambling economy. Maybe what OP's data result regarding about countries that gambles the most is different because I guess it depends on the number of participants you included in the gambling survey.

Of course many don't think the statistics show the first ranked country to be Australia, but what I do know is that the majority of Australians are gambling mad and the numbers are on the rise.
indeed if we think that the largest gambling country the United States is the first and several other countries and it turns out that there are lots of very large gambling locations but never entered as a Candidate.

Consider the place part of China and Chinese are the most number of players there. Its usually the Chinese are the top gamblers everywhere but since their government disallow gambling, its excluded there. But it could be that its still the Chinese people who are initiating the gambling in Australia and Singapore.  Cambodia also have more casino establishments today but its not on the list.

Studies and surveys can't be instantly generated and it is hard to find the latest especially during the pandemic.

Our country is not included with the list and I already expected that thing because of being a third world country and most of the gambling games here are banned, I thought that China or the US will be the first one on the list because of the king that they have a lot of population and most of the games in gambling are created by their countries.

Based on the name of the countries listed above we can say that all of them are rich countries so we can conclude here that gambling would be so helpful for the economy to rise and it is because of the tax collected from them.

I didn't even expect my country to be on the list as it's a third world country where the majority can't afford to lose much money in gambling. A list like this would most likely to have countries with great economy, and it shows. The 2020 list on the link provided by op has Macau and the USA leading and I feel like there's nothing to argue with that since they are a big player when it comes to the gambling industry.

I think that it would be hard to really identify the top country of gambling activities since there a lot to consider such as currency value, population, the regulated and the unregulated gambling activities.

Australia has a very large annual gambling loss value when compared to other countries.  I never thought that gambling players in Australia were much more likely to lose than gamblers from the US or China.  gambling owners in Australia must have made a lot of profit from the gambling players who lost there..

Most likely this data was only taken from casinos or other firms of gambling that data could easily get. Japan was very expected for me because I heard about gambling being particularly popular there. But it's hard to judge how credible this data is. And I want to point out that the data is not contradictory at all! It's just that loss per adult and loss in billions overall are two very different things and depend largely on the population. In fact, the second website has the chart with losses per adult, and they are the same as in the table of the first website (not 100%, but more or less the same).
And xandry's point that it's from 4 years ago is important since a lot could change from then. But the article this person suggests is also using data from the website the op provided, so the data on this website is probably also mixed and might not be up to date.

I can confirm here in Italy people gamble hard and, actually, most of the games are sponsored by the state so people do not feel they are doing something crazy.
In 2018 alone Italians gambled the crazy amount of €106,8 billion! And figures keep rising year over year.
The state retained its stake of €19 billion profit.

Yeah and I am wondering how would the numbers look like if the illegal gambling is counted as well. I know at least 10-15 gamblers myself on telegram who are gambling although gambling is banned in their country. So Australia in the top rank base on worldatlas while USA in the top base on casino.org, if we say per adult this means per gambler if I am right and 1k plus usd loses is pretty high especially if this is monthly loses or less.

Though it is not stated there whether that amount is base on monthly loses but I am sure that Australia is aware of it and maybe they are also earning a good amount of taxes coming from casinos the same with US as they are not doing something to counter the gaming activity in their country.

I guess the first chart only denotes that gamblers in Australia are spending too much compared to the players in Spain and it doesn't confirm that there are more gamblers in Australia than in Spain.

Two different data but both of them are from 2017 according to the article. So I guess both charts visualize different data. The one from worldatlas shows ranking based on how much money per adult loses. But was a little disappointed (in a good way i mean lol) to see that adults in the country on top seems to be losing around $1,300. I guess it is an average for each adult per year. Was expecting it to be something more bigger in number lol. The other chart seems to shows how many people regularly gambles in a casino. Not surprised to see US in the top.

Well, this article only shows the average losses of an adult player in the country and not the number of players. The top countries like Australia and Singapore mean that their citizens or players are more willing to spend and lose the higher amount in gambling compare to the other however on the second chart provides information on the average losses per country which means it refers to the average total amount as a whole and not per player. The two charts gave different information on whose on the top because the first chart refers to an individual while the second chart is in general that makes the US be the number one on the second chart for more citizens or people do gambling in the country.

Yeah it’s interesting to see these statistics about countries where gambling is like the a norm because is some nations gambling is viewed negatively as many gamblers are known to be extravagant in their spending and life in general. I was surprise that Japan is the second most countries that do like to gamble. Despite their reputation of being one of the country with rich culture and values where most people living in that place are good. Well they have the # 1 safest city in the world. Anyway, gambling is not consider as bad for its main purpose is to get excitemen and fun. I think these can applied to them because they were literally rich in good values which means that gambling addiction would be in lower number compared to the other countries. These numbers wont really be final considering that there are still some places which wont really be included in the count and as mentioned about unregulated gambling places and other similar forms which wouldnt really be tallied out.So these numbers arent really that on spot but it is better rather than having nothing at all and at least we do have some idea on what places on the world are mostly involved with gambling.This would really vary on each country basing of if its a rich one or a developing country.Of course, people living and their status will be reflecting into their capability or capacity on dealing with gambling but there are still poor countries that might able to go with the ranks.

yeah, Indonesia for example. Indonesia would not be on the list because gambling is illegal here.
Gambling has been in the culture of Indonesia. I believe many people here have grown up gambling with family or at least friends.
With the fact that Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest population in this world, it could be easily on the list if it is tracked properly.
although it's illegal in my country, we could still see online gambling ads on mainstream platforms like social media, youtube, or even promoted by many influencers.

It is not final as we know that gambling industries still grow from time to time. The lists will change in the next year as the government will allow the casino to run their business because the government wants to make money again from the gambling business. Besides the casino, I think there will be traditional gambling games that people played someplace out of the casino, that the government knows where is those places. Even if in that country, gambling is prohibited, people can play gambling in a secret place.

It's no surprise, seeing Singapore in second place. I don't live in Singapore, but very close to it (maybe it only takes 1 hour to fly there), even some of my acquaintances are willing to go to Singapore just to gamble, because in my country gambling is a prohibited activity. In other words, Singapore is a paradise for gamblers from my country and several other countries nearby.

There's not much noise in Singapore when it comes to gambling but they are making on the top list, it's great to go to Singapore to gamble because you are not only going there to gamble but you are can visit great and beautiful places that are Instagram worthy, it's like hitting two birds with one stone, a really great place to visit.

Good to see that Our country is not on either list meaning we are still not that Dominating country in gambling .

I just found out that, to be honest before that I thought that European countries were the countries that gambled the most but according to these data, at least the Asian states were still at the top. Most, if not all, of the top 10 countries that gamble the most are developed countries. This ranking must also reflect the kind of lifestyle they have in these countries. It means that people have some extras or surplus in their money because they have the luxury to spend an amount in gambling.

Poor countries may have a lot of gamblers also but they must be severely limited by the amount they can afford to lose or gamble.

Therefore it's not really a problem because they are earning a lot and they can allocate some money in gambling which does not affect their financial responsibilities. Government knows that, reason why they allow their people to gamble.

I was aware that the Irish and Greek people like to gamble a lot. It's not a surprise that they are among your Top10 list. But once country I didn't expect to see there it's Norway. Anyway, we cannot really get the full statistics of it unless we are going to limit our scope to cryptocurrency or even online gambling. With this, we should ask, what is the importance of why we should understand the statistics? The List is not fully accurate because some countries still missing in the list. Nigeria is not listed among . I think both Las Vegas and Macau have a big fan of gambling, but we don't know for sure how big the fan. Both Las Vegas and Macau makes a lot of money from gambling, and that makes two places will be a heaven for the gamblers. But still, there is no valid info or data that will show the biggest places that gamble the most because the data or info will always change. Both countries from 2 sources have a big value of money so they will be surely the top 1. But if you look on Asian countries, there are large number of gamblers too. Las Vegas is awesome, it's always such a great trip and vacation. I haven't been to Macau yet but I want to check it out after all the corona madness is over. Las Vegas is such an awesome city with so many different casinos. The hole city and county lives of the gambling revenues. Unfortunately many other countries don't have such a centralised gambling city. Except maybe Macau there are not really other places to compare. In southern oder Middle America gambling is also important but it doesn't happen so much in casinos. People tend to invest there money more in lotteries. Also scratch cards are very big in these countries.

Taking into account that gambling is not legal everywhere then we can only speculate how big it is, also while gambling could be legal in many countries it is heavily regulated and even in those countries there is a lot of illegal gambling going on, so as you say it is impossible to know how big the industry really is, however estimations can be made and it is obvious that in the countries that are more prosperous the gambling industry must be bigger as people have more money to spend.

Gambling with a legal consent is a good and very freely to play and enjoy. I agree to the idea that it is more enjoyable to play and of course you will not think of any other things because it is legal but I think for every positive side, there is also a negative side. The top two rankings of the second website were exactly what I expected.But i am confusion，why the country name is Macau and Hong Kong，why not called China，Macau and Hong Kong are just two cities in China.

There are cases like that but I think the majority of the crimes are not related to gambling so even if the government focuses on gambling addiction, there would still be a lot of crimes that are actually bigger than gambling-related crimes happening around them. Also, not all who commits crime uses their money for gambling or any other vices. But for those who do such terrible things for gambling, that's already a result of addiction.

What country is listed that might be related to China is Macau which is listed as the most country which gamble the most. Based on the site, it generates 50% of the autonomous region of China.

It is just 5 countries but the countries included are: Singapore, Ireland, Finland, Australia and UK in which basing from the OP's source is close but UK is not included in that year. In my opinion the best way to measure gamblers based on their addictions would be to look at inter monthly data. An addict can't really control his gambling habits and is usually constrained by his bankroll. So at the beginning of a month there should be a lot of semi addicts and full gambling addicts who just hit their salary and will be eager to gamble. Later on the months I would assume most of the turnover is being generated by gamblers who play for fun and leisure.

I think every casinos or gambling sites has their own databases wherein each players profile can be seen the amount they are invested, the amount they will withdrawn. And I think the reason why they can make a list of that is because somehow gambling sites needed to share at least their top countries I think, and their best player, I'm not sure with this but we all know tat gambling is being regulated by government as well so the fact that it is publicly shown maybe because they let the public knew it.

Universities can use those data and can make any conclusions about gambling. I did check, it is a pretty interesting take on gambling, banning everything that a private owner can own but not the state run lotteries which is a good move for China because they are monopolizing the profits pouring into gambling industries, I found out too that gambling debt will not be a problem in Chinese soil which means that if someone has some sort of debt that involves gambling, they can just go to China to prevent possible litigation. Macau must have been the place where all games can be seen. Every country where China invested in there is always hotel-casino that will almost cover 10 hectares. They did have in Hanoi all the way down to Cambodia and to Singapore. It should have been these counties that actually are on top of the list that it would mean every Chinese gambler will likely lose more than $1288.

I thought that China would be the number 1 on the list because most of the gambling games are created or originated in China, just because of misinformation that I had, thinking that China would be the number 1 on the list. I searched about gambling in China and it says that gambling is still illegal in China, not bad because they have still reached the number 2 spot. USA got the number 1 spot maybe most of them are active in the sports betting because the USA is active in that part.

Very few Asian countries are available in the list. As per the data, western nations have good number of gamblers. The amount being spend on gambling by an average person from the top countries is really big when calculated against the fiat currency value of third world countries. For some people it is one year's earning through their daily job for the living.

It is true that Asian countries have few gamblers but not a few players from Asia who play in western countries or the US. if we look at 'spent on gambling/year', the countries from Asia are in the lead.

That's what I thought as well, here in my country we adapted some Chinese gambling games such as Majong, I think most of the old people in china knows how to gamble or they are good at gambling and given by the number if their population I thought they will rank as number 1. There are many Chinese gamblers migrated in our country as well, there is a place that almost 90% is occupied by Chinese people who do gambling and last time our govt discovered some of them are illegally making money in online gambling.

We know that Asian countries have traditional gambling games, so I think that does not count as gambling on that list. If they count the traditional gambling games, I think the Asian countries will get on the list. We do not know what their indicator to list the countries that playing gambling, so we can just accept the list. If we want, we can search for the other sources to see the other countries that gamble the most.
