there are almost 10.000 coins according to coinmarketcap.
How to get an overview? How to discover coins with great potential based on other coins with similar characteristics?
Is there a CSV file oder SQL database to analyze somewhere?

I usually invest in altcoin that are in the top 100 on coinmarketcap, because in my opinion investing in altcoin that are in the top 100 on coinmarketcap will definitely give me a big profit in the long term and the risk is also small, so in my opinion you don't need to bother looking at all altcoin on coinmarketcap, because if you want to invest in altcoin that can give you profit with a small risk, then you only need to research altcoin that are in the top 100-300 on coinmarketcap, because altcoin must already have a product and high volume, so the risk is definitely smaller and of course the price will continue to increase all the time.

I'm afraid there is no public data for the specific info that you are looking for but People usually flocks to where the trend is and it's currently DeFi and NFT tokens.

You can use the following data from Coingecko:

Sort them by marketcap or trading volume and compare which of them has more room for growth. Don't forget to look into other factors like audited codes before buying them. That reduces your risk of rug pulls and exit scams.

Research every coin you see mentioned on the internet. That's how I became rich and that's how I found UTNP and 0xMR. Unfortunately YETI hasn't mooned yet but I think it will soon.

The best way to discover potential altcoin to invest in is to carry out deep research about it, know the road map and the team behind the coin. If you are looking for a quick profit, then you have to invest in a coin that has a short-term goal.

Every project has a team and from their performance either in a long or short term, it's easy to predict their performance and their whitepaper and road map as a fundamental analysis.
Its very possible that after all the analysis, the project may likely not go as predicted but if you hold for long term, certainly it will be beneficial.
Take a look at BNB for example, everyone knows that Binance is a world leading exchange and this shows how utility and used cases that's surrounded by Binance coin.

Actually it's hard to get a good suggestion cause everyone got one for everybody. It's up to that someone whether which one he will take into consideration.

Everyday there are new tokens/coins being added on coingecko and coinmarketcap. For sure everyone aware that not all added there are legit and some are shitcoin but of course there are profits being linger on those. Some are worth riding and some are dangerous. Better to do or trade bigger projects.

By experience and perseverance. each time you try to invest in those coins you will land to some review sites sometimes in a group where they tackle the coins that might become successful in the next years from that huge number of coins but none of this option will really give you the right answer. You need to work on your own to see whether you decide to invest in it or not. It's better to have a local community where they will help you if you are just a starter and they won't gonna teach you to advance things just some basics to get you going on your first journey.

Top 100-300 is a good idea. But that is the whole point: just a few months ago completely new and unknown coins have stormed the top 100-300. Where were these coins before? For example: https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/bakeryswap - 47x since 7th Feb.

It is about how you make your research upon finding one. You source out information through forums, medias, news and any source that you can extract information.
There's no magic and a quick glance for that kind of basis. There's a process to know if they have great potential.

If you further ignore all the ones with premines/instamines/devtax, then you're left with only a handful,
that share the good properties of Bitcoin: created to innovate, not to enrich the creators.

You must first understand what the coin is bringing to the industry and who are the people behind the project and if they are in a better exchange, these three will count as the best criteria to choose on what coins are worth investing if there are similar characteristics then check the volume and liquidity, these two can be considered a vote of confidence coming from investors.

It will take forever before you will finish analyzing each one of them. You don't have to do that. 10,000 coins does not mean 10,000 options for your investment money. If I were you, I would just simply crush out the 9,900 and focus on the top 100. If that is hard enough for you to seriously analyze, crush out the 98 and just focus on buying Bitcoin and Ethereum. This is not to say these two are the only coins worth investing. It simply means to say you can hardly fail in choosing these two.

 when it comes a coins with a great potential through coinmarketcap, perhaps in my view it should be listed wherein at least among with the top 10 or upto 20 coins.. Because thats what's others doing as well when they looking for a great coin to trade. But of course they make research about how genuine the project is before anything else, because for them that's the most important when choosing a coin especially if its for long term and i agree with that.

You are right, with the number of coins and tokens in the market right now, deciding on the type of coin to buy or discovering a coin with great potentials can be a herculean task. However, I think that before embarking on such you need to first decide the type of investment plan you want, that is, is it long term or short term, after deciding on this, it will go a long way in helping you sort out projects.
Now, if it's for long term, then top 100-150 on coinmarketcap can be a good place to get started, these are coins which have tried their best to reach that rank on coinmarketcap and as such will only keep trying to maintain growth.
On the other hand, if it's for short term, then check upcoming projects and their team motive towards the platform, in addition to this should also be the use case of the project, once everything is in place, check the exchange they are listing on before making your final move. Since it's for short term, know when to take profit.

there are many altcoins on the exchange market and almost all of their data is centralized on Coinmarketcap. So before buying altcoins, I did some research on some of the altcoins listed on Coinmarketcap and the altcoins that were in the top 50 - 100 positions. and after finding several altcoins then I saw that they were listed in the top 10 market or not. because I will buy altcoins that are in the top 50 - 100 and the market that is in the top10 coinmarketcap.

you mean 10000 or 10,000 not 10.000 coin?
Not all currencies are worth traking and part of them is a waste of MB in which they are stored.
Either way, it is by using data offered by coinmarketcap or coingecko, new sites apply for hosting and CMC,coingecko list them and track their price.
The problem is that most of these currencies do not have significant market capacities and most of them are under the control of a small number of shareholders.

Frankly speaking (writing actually), it's a 50/50 thing between discovering profitable altcoins and ending the search with a scam alt. The crypto industry is a highly speculative one. This makes a lot of people mistake it for gambling and as such equal it to a "get rich scheme" which it isn't. At the moment, there's this trend of meme tokens running into quadrillion in supply and people are rushing into that with the aim of making an easy x10 flip or so from their investments and quickly cashing out. In most cases, it has paid off well for people especially those who get in at 8 zeroes.

However, to get into solid projects, I look at the WP of projects to know if they have utility/use-case. If a project doesn't have, I skip it. I don't want to invest in a project and continually hold my breath, thinking it has disappeared into thin air.

 If your goal is a profitable investment, then you cannot do without a thorough analysis. Therefore, be sure to look through all the information about the project and their coin. Coingecko has an excellent review of coins, you can trust him, and be sure to pay attention to the capitalization of the coin. My advice: To get a profit, it is safer to invest in TOP coins.

There are indeed a lot of coins on the Coinmarketcap list, and most of them are dead. I suggest that you can choose coins ranked 200 and above. Apart from that, you check if it is on a particular exchange, so that you can make exchanges. Many of the coins on Coinmarketcap have been deleted from the exchange.

Using your own research and assessment, it's only you who can decide. It's not  easy as there are lots of factors to consider
before investing to this market.

Make sure to check the market movements using CMC or COingecko, they've got lots of information that are very useful before
deciding which coins to buy.

Then you miss out on the ones with a very slow emission.
The ones that after a few years have still only emitted a few percent of their (soft) total supply.

You cannot get a high marketcap with a very low supply.

It is not really that surprising, I have held the view for a long time that 99% of the coins in the market are scams so I was expecting a number close to 100 and to see that only 60 are coded from scratch means that even my stance has been too soft on altcoins, truth to be told most coins are either copies, forks or derivatives from other coins and when that is the case your only hope is that hype takes over a particular coin so you can make money, but if you want to invest based on fundamentals then investing in coins that are actually being developed from scratch seems like your best bet.

There are series of projects on both Coingecko and Coin Market Cap that one can follow but there are series of upcoming ones which are yet to be listed anywhere but promising but one has to be very careful and looking for tokens to invest into in order not to fall victim.

Ensure you look in the team behind the project you want to invest into. Check their track records and how good they are at what they do. How attainable are their projects objectives and possible can their delivery be. Things like these should be checked to know what potential the project will have.

That will not be definitely helping you. Because, it is all about promotions of coins and how intensively devs are caring their project. I mean many shit projects are enjoying good run in this crypto space whereas some real concept based the project disappeared in very short period of time or trading at very low level still. So, no analyze will help you.

Probably what you could do is, just go with old and reputed/well known coins. Because, they are having more than 80% chances for getting you good profits. Instead of struggling with all these, you can simply invest with the bitcoin alone which might be having 99% assurance to get you good profits in long run.

True, but the 200 rank seems too far, it's better to choose for the top 50 so it's not too complicated to choose because it's true as you say, many coins on Coinmarketcap cannot be exchanged anymore because they are no longer developed by the team.

Only about 60 coins there have daily issuance over $1K,
so once again a very manageable number.

The intersection with that other list of coins written from scratch is maybe only a dozen or so,
and should merit the most interest.

There is no miracle recipe, but as already said in other comments, the quality of the research carried out is crucial. Obviously, that will not be enough and it will also be necessary to be lucky ...

A good solution is to balance the risks by investing a part of your funds in solid assets (top 10/20) and the other part in projects in which you believe, following your research. The key is not to get carried away by all the promises made in each white paper. The teams are very, very strong in marketing nowadays !  :D

Personally I do my own research too when it comes to a new rising and promisung altcoins today but to be honest I am lazy when it comes searching for a great potential altcoin it is because we are having a 10,000 altcoin in the market and that was too huge and time consuming if we were going to read every white paper of every project right. And for me that is why it is useful to rely in someoned advises too, like their reviews or experience using that token, and from that is my point to check the white paper of a certain project.

And unfortunately the quality of the research has everything to do with your knowledge about how the blockchain really works, after all how you can find good projects when you know nothing about the market itself? This is why people most of the time recommend other people to stay away from altcoins, people do this not because they want to interfere with the chances of people to make money, what they want to do is to avoid them to go through catastrophic losses which is by far the most likely outcome.
