For the last 2 years, I've been organizing this little contest in the french section, but due to a lack of participants and surprises, this year I'm running the contest in the US section.
The idea is to make a small fictitious portfolio on January 1st 2022 and to see on December 31 2022 who has performed the best.
Suppose that you have 1000$ and you want to make a small portfolio with 4 altcoins. Which ones do you choose and in what proportion ?

Restrictions :
You can not take BTC (or wrapped BTC etc...).
Not allowed to put more than 50% of your portfolio in one altcoin.
And you must put at least 5% of your portfolio in each altcoin
Take at least one altcoin beyond the 100th position on Coingecko (https://www.coingecko.com/).

Explanation :
As the reference "buy" price, I will take the opening price reported by Coingecko in the historical data of 01/01/2022.
And the closing price of 31/12/2022 will be used as reference "sale" price.
The one who will see his or her fictitious portfolio progress the most in terms of value will be declared the big winner.
Whoever bets on the best performing altcoin at the end of 2022 will receive a 1000$ bonus on the value of his final portfolio.
Whoever bets on the lowest performing altcoin at the end of 2022 will receive a 1000$ penalty on the value of his final portfolio.

Who can participate ?
Anyone as long as you have reached the Jr Member Member rank (I may lower this limit a little later if there isn't enough participants).
You must have received 5 merits between the last 120 days and just before this post.
You must not have any legitimate negative feedback from a DT member (I will decide whether or not a feedback is legitimate)
No multi-accounts, thank you.
The limit of participants is set to 49 users (49 users + me). First come, first served (if accepted (if you see your name in the second post, you are accepted)).
Registration end date: 30/12/2021 11:59pm (Paris time).

And what we can win ?
There will be 3 winners :
1st : 0.002 BTC + 1 DOT^* + 0.003 BTC^*
2nd : 0.00075 BTC + 0.66 DOT^* + 0.0015 BTC^*
3rd : 0.00025 BTC + 0.34 DOT^* + 0.0005 BTC^*

(^* DOT are generously given by Elma (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5374598.msg58799381#msg58799381). DOT will be converted into BTC. )

Please note that if by luck (or misfortune, it depends :)), I'am on the podium, the rewards will not be shifted and the 4th will receive nothing.
Once the contest is over and the ranking is clear (I'll give you a few days to check if everything is OK, I can make mistakes), winners will be contacted by PM to ask for their BTC addresses and I'll send them their rewards. If there is no answer from a winner within 7 days, I will contact the 4th, then the 5th, etc... Rewards will be sent at the same time. Of course, your account should not be banned at the end of the contest. The contest lasts one year, be aware of this.

If on 01/01/2021, there is no price for your token, it is like playing with 3 Alts.

We have two similar contests running on the german board, where every user only took one altcoin and I'm pretty much done building a website (some html and javascript) for both these contests to get a live view on our portfolio and to see which altcoin is currently on top of the leaderboard and to see if we are outperforming bitcoin with our portfolio.

I felt color blind too :P Unfortunately, I can't easily adjust the order each time, so I just compared to the latest daily data (https://loyce.club/other/halab/?C=M;O=D).
Update: I did it anyway: I created loyce.club/other/halab/csv2.txt (https://loyce.club/other/halab/csv2.txt), which uses a comma as decimal sign, and a colon instead of comma to separate the fields (this is easier for my spreadsheet). It's sorted by today's ranking, so the legend matches the right side of the graph:

Are the "Mirrored stocks" broken?

Pretty much. Mirror ran on the Terra blockchain, and took Terra's algorithmic stablecoin UST to be worth 1 USD. Last week, UST broke and depegged (https://www.cnet.com/personal-finance/crypto/luna-crypto-crash-how-ust-broke-why-it-matters-and-whats-next/), taking down Terra with it. Mirror's pricing oracles seem to be taking 1 USD = 1 UST as fact, but 1 UST is now trading at $0.101 so stock pricing is broken (example: oracles are reporting $TWTR to be worth 38.23 UST (~= $3.84), while stock market pricing is $38.24 USD). Even if pricing was accurate taking the depeg into account, a lot of trust has been lost in Terra so most people are probably looking to get out.

I wasn't expecting to win this contest, but I certainly didn't expect that this would be the reason I'd end up in last  :P

It's pretty ironic that you were the one to chose 'real life stocks' instead of crypto and now ended up with a broken price because of the underlying crypto/chain being somewhat broken :D

When pegging a stock to crypto, I would assume that when someone buys a "crypto stock" the organisation behind it buys the real stock and keeps it. If that happened, the stock must still be there! Who's taking the profit now? If it didn't happen, it was a ponzi from the start.

My ride is indeed very boring. The only "excitement" was when Waves bubbled up, but it popped again.
Just 2 days ago I checked how DarkStar_ was doing:

Weird: the CoinGecko links above don't show a price anymore, it shows "No active trades are found for this coin.". I checked my script, but couldn't easily figure out where the values shown here come from.

I still wonder who has the actual stock:

I don't actually understand the concept of mirrored stocks, since the value is far from the stocks' actual value.

Usually they should be backed by the actual stock or they would be 1/10th of an actual stock for example. If they aren‘t actually backed then it‘s just as sus as TUSD was :D

Theres coins like these on other chains that actually work pretty good (can think of an algorand project from the top of my head).

There never was any real stock backing these mirrored tokens - I don't think the SEC would approve of any company trying to do that. I haven't looked too closely into how they actually worked, but my rough understanding is that they worked sort of like a perpetual futures contract that tries to use something similar to funding rates in order to incentivize people to long/short the stock depending on the price of the token relative to the actual stock.

Wow... I mean I'm not surprised, but I don't get how people continue to trust these types of projects; since they always seem to go down sooner or later anyway.
Like, what's the use of a 'peg' if it can just be 'depegged'? If there were real stocks behind those 'mirrored stocks' (that someone buys for you when you buy the 'stablecoin version' of it), only then would it really be pegged and (as long as the 'someone' doesn't steal them from you) can't really be depegged, correct?

That is what I expected (and would love to see), but it looks like it was just another ponzi :o

Things aren't looking really good for pretty much all of us (especially @DarkStar_) and sitting at spot #17 I doubt that I could even make a comeback this year. Even those that shortly outperformed your stable coins or the bitcoin price itself are now all sitting way below that :/

Pretty amazing how even with Bitcoin losing exactly 50% of its USD-denominated value, it's still number 2 and outperformed all altcoin portfolios.
Goes to show yet again, how risky it is to invest in alts instead of Bitcoin...

This year the +1000/-1000$ rule is a bit ridiculous considering this shitty year. I hadn't had this case yet. I'm not going to change the rules during the year, but for 2023 I was thinking of some adjustments :

- +1000/-1000$ would become +100/-100$.
- And I will only allow one stable coin (sorry LoyceV, you'll have to get your hands dirty and dig into the depths of the shitcoin rankings :)).

I don't know at what precise time CG defines its opening/closing prices...

I don't think there is much suspense about the winner, nor for the podium. But there may be a last minute surprise :).

I've set it for weekly updates in loyce.club/other/halab (https://loyce.club/other/halab/?C=M;O=D). I'll scrape data 2 minutes after midnight, so it doesn't interfere with the 2023 portfolio scraping.

I won't keep posting the graph here every 6-ish weeks, but if halab keeps this topic open, someone can remind me later. It would be nice to see what happens if altcoins go to the moon. And you can always copy/paste the latest update from here (https://loyce.club/other/halab/?C=M;O=D) yourself.

I would assume today's closing price is tomorrow's opening price. My data (below) is scraped right after midnight, and it takes a few seconds to get values for all coins. So it should be very close to the opening price.

It's quite a sad result. At least Bitcoin is still on top of the altcoins, but dropping almost two-thirds in value while inflation in many fiat currencies is soaring is not what I hoped for. The economy much more on central banks than it should.

Everything is verifiable on Coingecko (historical data).
Take the opening price of your Alts on 01/01/2022.
Qt : (1000 * your proportion/100)/ opening price
Value of the alt on 31/12/2022: closing price on 31/12/2022 * Qt.
And check that the total is correct.

Considering the catastrophic year, it should not change anything for LoyceV, but for the podium, we are sure of nothing.

I think the better lesson is probably something related to recognizing that DeFi can have issues, even for audited projects and algorithms that sound good in theory. Mirror (the app that created those "mirrored" tokens) never said that they were backed by real stock, and it was never the objective.

I was curious how my portfolio looked if Mirror/UST were to still function, so going off of Yahoo Finance stock prices, I'd be at:
1.40481007 mAAPL: $182.52
0.74098225 mMSFT: $177.70
0.08518962 mGOOGL: $7.52 (GOOGL did a 20:1 stock split in July - I have no idea how Mirror would have handled this. If we assume that it would have handled it properly, it would be at $150.40)

Total: $595.82 (accounting for split) or $452.94. Not very great, but it would have gotten me second  :P
