the situation with Coldkey shook this group down to the core. the financial loss incurred was bad enough. worse however, was the dark shadow cast on users and makers. the future looks bleak.

however, such turmoil can be seen as an opportunity to evolve. Polymerbit reached out to me about an idea. what if we took everything that was good about coldkey - and saved it, while fixing the bad.

main problems found in Coldkey:

1) don’t trust, verify. now proven for all members.
2) collectors’ premiums can be destroyed overnight with malpractice
3) general unreliability leads to a snowball effect

with this post, we’d like to introduce you all to project Icarus.

project Icarus is based on the greek mythology of ‘flying too close to the sun’. by inherently trusting the keys, we all got burnt.

Icarus will focus on bringing back cards at an affordable price point, while ditching traditional keys. this will have a fundamental impact on the risk to users.

stage 1: introduction of keyless cards under $15
stage 2: development and incorporation of BIP38 options

initially, the cards will not be used as cold storage wallets but as a kind of canvas - the quality of the cards will be as high as the old ones!

in any case, the editions (which would’ve been released by Coldkey in the future) will now be released under Icarus ... a new logo is also already in development.

this announcement should also serve as an info for those who loved Coldkey and cared a lot about the cards. those who were directly affected by the crash will have initial priority on the lower serial numbers and will receive additional goodies.

Ohhh I like this that sounds fun. Why then don't we just take it back to the basics and prescribe each card with silver and gold grams imbedded into the artwork? I love Valcambi. Valambi Icarus has a nice ring to it doesn't it! Gold and silver grams also hold value and could be a great way to bring crypto and precious metals together under one card, maybe down the road could add in DIY key generation somehow or maybe have another solution for the loading of any crypto value to this new card venture. Any who I thought it would be fun to chime in with that. Can get creative with it, even get some metals exchanges involved?!

You guys piqued my interest, sign me up for a test run  :D

It's good to see you're not getting discouraged after this setback with coldkey. It might sound silly, but maybe this incident had to happen for something new and better to come out of it. Cygan, you have my utmost respect for how you managed everything in this unfortunate situation. Not everyone would have done and managed that. So I wish you the best of luck for project icarus and I hope it will be successful!  :)

This is surely the start of a very important project and continuing on from a foundations
of a failed one. There is no doubt with the crew who are involved now ^{Xprim777, Polymerbit,
Owlcatz and Cygan} that this is going to be massive.

The downfall of Coldkey has sparked this into life with new ideas and there is already
a very receptive audience waiting with anticipation for it to take full flight.

I started my Bitcoin collectibles collection with Polymerbit and will surely back this at
some stage.

Looking forward to it and cross my fingers for a good and nice product.

Hopefully the trust of the old coldkey collectors (this CK word should be banned in future ;D) is not completely shaken. I hope that you will be given the chance and that you will use it by being as transparent as possible.
In any case it is an interesting constelation of the team. I am very happy to see @polymerbit (who has delivered first class designs with his notes) and @owlcatz (has managed all matters concerning Coldkey in the past - despite the known chaos ::)).

Again, another question: will polymerbit remain the only designer or will there be collabs for designs at Icarus as well?

today we want to share another info with you.
we are now in possession of our production hardware and will soon be able to create the first testprints of our Icarus cards 8)
we will also be able to provide you with at least the same if not better quality of the old ck-cards. our cards will be laminated, and the uv safety feature will also be present on the Icarus cards.

we are in the process of creating/printing the poker card for the upcoming poker tournaments :)

I was a fan of these cards in the past and tried to collect them.

you can see 4 different editions (white, bronze, silver and gold)
cards are laminated and will not have holograms. the Icarus team is very grateful for any opinion you may have :)

   The cards came out great. Especially when you lay them out next to each other and see the different colors they really stand out!

   Now if only I was a poker player and in that tournament!  Goodluck to all them players who get them!

Cards are looking great - even tho I am not the biggest fan of the different versions/editions of gold, silver, bronze and stuff like that.. just keep me reminding to other projects if you know what I mean.  ::) :P

just look for the new logo and the new project name, then enjoy the new editions/versions and completely forget about the predecessor (it was already bad and painful enough)

Icarus has acquired the remaining Coldkey holograms with a project in mind.
we plan to create some card-based artworks using these holograms. the holograms would not be used for authentication or counterfeiting prevention. rather, they would be purely for aesthetic purposes.

apropos update. we from Icarus want to present you a small and first 'sneak peek' of the designs for our upcoming cards today for easter.
we are totally on schedule and will sell this edition 'blank' without any keys, holos or anything the like.
if you are at the miami 2023 conference, you might have the chance to meet polymerbit there, who can show you the first sample cards on site. ;)

on the future Icarus cards the serial numbers will be stamped/embossed
the serial numbers will look like this: [editionname.d1.#w1]

d stand for design
w/b/s/g stand for white/bronze/silver/gold

while writing, another idea just occurred to me. what do you think if the block height for the production just created should also serve as a kind of timestamp and also be attached to each of the cards? :)

So, i'm confused now, do we will have a tournament this weened or are we still in the break? i was looking at betnomi poker tournaments but I couldn't find the Sunday game, and I'm not sure if it will be listed in the next few days or if we will have to wait until the next weekend.

Hello cygan.

I was reading the thread and want to know more about these Icarus Cards. I don't get clear if they are wallets or just collectibles.

Can you explain to me a little more about them, if they are wallets I would like to know all about them and about the security. Some years I get an NFT card wallet from another company, and the pack comes with a printed private key on a piece of paper, and even if the card was awesome for me was hard to trust in it and it the end save it as a collectible.

That's why I would like to know more about these Icarus cards.

And I would like to know if you would be interested in a web page for the project, I could get the domain icarus.mx or icarus.lat if you want.

  I believe initially they were meant as only collectable cards with no keys attached to load and sweep.

   But I believe now they might upgrade eventually to cars with keys as the OP looks like its been updated as follows...

I am not up to speed with how many cards have been made but I want to be clear, would like one of each design and prefer #76 if possible.

If there’s a positive from this nightmare, it’s forced makers to rethink the landscape of trust to trust less wallets. I’m not sure they’ve announced it yet but there’s other coin makers working on the same thing.

we at Icarus will produce cards without any keys for the time being and offer them for sale as collector's items.
we are taking this step to gain the trust of the old ck-collectors and at the same time to heal the wounds (as good as possible) of all victims.
if everything goes as we have imagined, we will also produce Icarus Cards, on which the buyer can load/send any amount of Bitcoin on his own.

Also I would like to know if the future sees the creation of something like the nLockTime Cryptobonds, they were one of the preferred cards, in a certain way it gives a bit of security knowing that the coins are blocked for a certain time.

I didn't want to post the following in either your "white cards" sale topic or the "gold/silver/copper" raffle topic -avoid interfering with your future sales & raffle results-.

The following came into my mind immediately after seeing the "gold/silver/copper" raffle topic.
I wanted to provide some constructive feedback (that's not criticism) in a friendly way and hear your opinion (+ the opinion of the community) on the subject.


At the sale topic of the "Icarus Sticker Edition Cards" it is clearly mentioned that "each card design is part of a limited series, with only 25 editions available for each design (1st batch). this limited run amplifies your card's exclusivity".

When I placed an order for a set of cards, I had the impression that each design will be limited to 25 cards in total. There is NOWHERE being mentioned that the same design will be printed on different colour cards in the future. I thought that the "with only 25 editions available for each design" statement was clear enough. I understand that Yogg used to print some designs in gold/silver/copper cards, HOWEVER he was crystal clear and transparent from the begging about the mintage of each design & the total mintage of the different colour cards.

If I (and maybe others here) knew in advance that more cards -in different colours- of the EXACT same design- will be released in the future, I might have hold back on getting the white edition and gone "all in" in -let's say- the gold variation raffle.

Since this is not a loaded card, you can clearly understand that it is 100% collectible item. If it was loaded, some people might have bought it for usage, such as using it as a cold storage solution or gifted it to friends -an easy way to hand off btc in a form of a card- etc. But for this particular release, I understand that it is a purely collectible item.

As a collectible item, it has also a collectible aftersales/secondary market value. By suddenly increasing its mintage number without any prior notifications  (the printer goes brrrr), usually its collectible value decreases. Furthermore, by increasing the mintage numbers -printing the exact same design in different colour cards-, the edition that is getting the most "hit" in valuation is usually the base/normal editions (ie white cards).

Just imagine an artist offering a limited number of exclusive numbered prints, and after those getting sold out, to offer the exact same design print in a different colour paper....

All I am saying is that in terms of transparency and crystal clearness -for a collectible numbered item-,  I would have wanted to know in advance your future plans to keep printing the same design, in different colour cards.

To provide an example: in case your raffle do extremely well, nothing is stopping you from printing the same designs in orange colour cards, followed by a "glowing in the dark" cards and then doing the rest of the rainbow colours cards (I am totally joking here  :D, LOL, I know that you will not do this, but you are probably getting what I am saying)

If you had added a general statement in your white cards sale topic, something like "this is your only chance of getting this design at a fixed price. A raffle will follow for gold/silver & copper colour cards", then prolly I wouldn't have said anything so far. You could have either made a generic statement (as above) or clearly and transparently stated -by mentioning mintage numbers- your future plans of using the same design in different colour cards.

Please do not take me wrong here.. I am not just a random dude that is trying to "attack you". I was the first that placed an order for a white card set & also -regardless of my above thoughts - the first one that placed a bid in the raffle. I received the white cards today and look great & I am still looking forward to winning some of the raffle lots. Tl;dr: I want the Icarus project to do well/succeed in the future...

BTW, what does the "1st batch" means? By indicating "with only 25 editions available for each design (1st batch)" without further elaborating on the "1st batch" and afterward releasing 84 moar cards -with the exact same design- into circulation, looks like those "*" that corporations are putting next to a sentence, and re-directing you to 10 pages of terms & conditions (trying to hide something from you)

and hmm where was the white card sold at? I dont recall that one. I remember ordering/paying for the sticker ones but do not recall seeing a white card.

The "Sticker" edition we recently launched includes a total of 10 designs.
For this first batch, we've released the first 4 designs, on a white card basis.
For each design of these white cards, the mintage is 25, no more cards will be produced.

In addition to this, we thought the community would appreciate finding their favorite design on another card format, so we created 21 special cards for each design, 3 gold, 7 silver and 11 copper.
We really should have mentioned this in the sale thread.

We're sorry we didn't give more consideration to the fact that some of you are very attached to their favorite serial number, and that it may not be possible for you to get a special card with the number you want.

since i myself created the said sales thread, i would also like to address the community again and apologize for the ambiguities🙏
we want to be as transparent as possible to all of you and this also applies to the editions and the description of our offered editions.

will there be a way to buy them directly here? I am still very much trying to understand these cards but they are also difficult to know what or how many are of each type or will be of each type and then all the ones that are not done via the collectibles area.

these cards will only be distributed by UniJoin through various free raffles and there will only be 20 of them - no more and no less.
we produced the cards on UniJoin's initiative and they now belong to UniJoin as well.
by this UniJoin and of course we from Icarus try to make more new users from the forum aware of these two brands.

as far as the UniJoin cards are concerned, maybe so, and if maybe one or the other known collector from our section has luck with the raffles, then he will get his UniJoin card.
but what i can promise, there will be quite a few Icarus editions, which can be considered as collectibles.

we wanted to give you a little overview of what you can expect from Icarus in the near future and in the next months :)
starting in october, you can all look forward to the 'timeline edition', which will be released monthly. the timeline series will feature €50 in satoshis at the beginning of each month. the amount on the card will be (buyer funded) - so it's up to you if you want to load the cards or not.
for q4/2023 as well as q1/2024 we could already win 2 well-known artists for this series

our own holograms are currently in production and will be sent to us in the coming weeks. if we are lucky they will reach us this month. so we can present you more editions - among others the 'hat-avatar edition' (it's an edition that refers to some users from the forum who own or wear their own hat-avatar)

since this series will be coming with public key and holo and our Icarus holos are still in production, which means they most likely won't be delivered on time for the actual production start, we wanted to give you 2 options on how we might go about it:

1. we will use the well known polymerbit holograms for the timeline series (october).
2. we wait until the Icarus holos are available and delay (for some days/weeks) the release of the october cards.

what can you be satisfied with?
when enough opinions/votes have been cast, we will then proceed as the majority has voted :)

exactly one week ago, our sale started with the first loadable cards. we offer a total of 42 cards from the timeline edition, which will be available on a monthly basis.

I never analyzed in depth how ColdKey works, but that is now in the past.

How do these cards specifically work? The person buys the card, who has an address where the person can deposit BTC, with the guarantee that only those who have the card can use the money, is that it?

exactly. the Icarus cards contain the public key (BTC address) and the private key (hidden behind the hologram) - both as qr-codes
the card owner can send any amount (or the amount printed on the card) to the card and can then withdraw it to another wallet with the help of the pk

Not wanting to distrust you (I have no reason to), but to understand: what guarantee is there that the Icarus team does not keep a record of the private key?

Your post reminds me an idea that could be used in the cold cards..

What of an open-source tool that could use some user end token or pass-code to get for the card just a partial encoded private key.. while becoming to exchanging the card the encoded private keys could be printed with a special indicator, and buyer/seller could check the Token authenticity straight on the Tool that can show if it is really belonging to the card Auth-key !  ???

@Danydee if i understand you correctly, you want to have a password generated that then gives you access to part of the private key? :o
i think that's too sensitive, it would mean that the private key is saved at some point during the whole process in order to be encrypted
that goes against the most basic security rules and regulations for us!

naaah, excuse my english.. I'm sometimes very sluggish :D

I was rather wondering about a (cryptographic) tool that can be used to (split) in some way the private key following these steps: The tool is gived the password and then generate the partial or encrypted Key that would be printed on the card. (It would be blind cryptographic mechanics so the generation algorithm made it without even calculating the whole private key). It can be an open source code that can be ran on user side and then just an secure encoded token is transmitted to Icarus for the calculation of the partial Key!
 So obviously the partial key cannot be used alone to control the wallet, it need to be reconstructed using the pass-code known only by the user.

The concept can be extended to get implemented on blockchain and use (tokens) to master the keys !  It is even possible to work on an implementation that allow the users to own their tokens without necessarily caring a crypto-wallet! To let some choice to the users on how they want to handle this
And the tokens of course would be transferable in case the cards will be changing hands  :)
