Title: Bitcoin Toll road! A boon to modern transport!
Post by: cuddaloreappu on September 30, 2014, 03:28:06 PM
Just imagine the benefits of a bitcoin toll road..

You drive your sedan at 80 miles per hour and 2 miles before the toll road a message pops up in your car's hud saying you would need to pay 100 satoshi to the toll road and asks for your one push payment.

https://i.imgur.com/9OZYEHfl.jpg

your car will have a wallet in which you can add funds! you pay the toll even before you arrive there and you don't slow or stop for anything!

How exciting!

This could save lots of time and human manpower! It could be even more exciting with self driving cars!

Issue would be implementation and cars would need internet access (some have but not all) there is rumor of sending bitcoin over radio but i am not sure how far along that is, also things to take in mind is transaction times and fees. This is a very cool idea though.

Just the cars access wifi through hotspots from our mobile

I'm afraid I'd crash working out how much 100 satoshi is  ;D

I prefer being told I need to pay 0.00100000 Bitcoin or however much 100 satoshi is.  ???

Presumably zero confirms or some very late braking. :)

Then we need the smart steering wheels so while doing 80, we thumb the button to approve and zip right on through.

I think the bitcoin toll option is sweet. I'd love to see that in reality...except for the part I am generally against toll. But still.

Or like 90% of people I can use an EZPass and literally not do anything except drive through the toll at 60MPH.

This is an interesting idea, but I don't think it would really catch on. First of all there is no toll road that will only charge 100 satashi for driving on the toll (and as a user the TX fee would be much more then the toll itslef). If you had more realistic tolls, then in order for it to work well we would need to see much high adoption rates. You would also have the issue of knowing which address to send payment to if you are not going to be stopping (this should change for every car and every time a car uses the toll)

First of all 100 satoshi was just an example, it could well be 100 bits..

Then why not the toll both update their public address in the database from which the car could obtain or else, why not a qr code on the road just 5 miles before..

I think  the engineers will figure out!

I think it is a cool idea and will make the transport faster since no need to stop at toll gates.  ;D

Cool idea. But if you really want to sell this idea, you need to address :

What problem the current toll system that is is solved by the OP proposition?

Is this is option offer cost reduction to the consumer/toll operator(both is setting up and daily operations)?

There is already touch and go(no need to stop at toll booth) system employed by many toll operators. How superior to the touch and go technology that  currently exist?

Does a working prototype /pilot project for this system already online or is this a proposal to start development for such system?

Those are just the ones that are currently on top of my head at the moment.

How about just being able to pay for the EZ Pass using Bitcoin in advance in any case?

Presumably zero confirms or some very late braking. :)

At such a low expense and due to the nature of the service being paid for you would have to expect zero confirmations.

You can already do that with the current system using fiat.It ranges from topping off at the ATM to  doing it online or even by SMS.

Sure, but I mean if people want to spend Bitcoin they should be able to have the option do it in advance and not have to fret about sending coin while in motion, which seems impractical. It would have to be automated in practice.

Hereabouts, we all just drive at 75 mph past the toll point. Cameras take a pic of the driver and the license plate, the computing back end gets your address from registration records, and you are mailed a bill. No special equipment required.

Yeah, the privacy issues bug me too. C'est la guerre.

A couple years back, some organization that specializes in processing payments to governments (utilities, court costs, licensure, parking, etc.) was accepting bitcoin. I wonder if they still do, and if so, whether we here can pay our tolls that way. Thanks for prompting the question in my mind.

As far as having a system to pay the bitcoin out they already use systems like this. The car doesnt have to have WiFi the toll stations just need it when it passes the check point it reads your member id then charges your account with the information you signed up with

It is not possible to send payment in an automated fashion unless you give up some control over the private keys of the address you are using to send the money.

I like the idea of using bitcoin to "refill" the balance on an easypass and continue to use an easypass in the same way that commuters do today

Accepting BTC to buy easypass  will be a good thing already. As well as buying transport tickets and other fees.

I agree. If you wanted to give up control of your private keys then you might as well prepay your easy pass with bitcoin (or fiat) and use that system as it works today.

On 495 near DC there are HOT (high occupancy toll) lanes that utilize the easy pass system that allow people to get on and off HOT lanes at high rates of speed and their account will be automatically debited the appropriate toll

ok there are lot of people here who argue that there is already a payment system like easypass and many others in various countries which give all these convenience and hence doing th same with bitcoin is not necessary..

but a fundamental realization is that how much easy pass and similar charge you for using those services? and compare it with the charges when the same is used of bitcoin?

without doubt they would fail and bitcoin based tech would win?

I believe that easy pass is actually free to use. I would argue that we may well see a similar version of easy pass but is prepaid with bitcoin rather then with your bank account/your credit card.

EZ Pass isn't free. It is factored into the cost of sales for whomever operates the toll road.

I would think that any system that uses bitcoin on a toll road would not be free either. Paying the toll would be very cheap however the operator of the toll road would need to invest in some technology to track which cars have paid

Considering such bitcoin based system still doesn't exist ,I would love to see the cost comparison.Somehow I doubt the bitcoin system would be cost competitive enough  (considering using bitcoin itself isn't cheaper than fiat) at the moment.

I guess funding a centralized payment system first wouldn't be any worse in this case. I guess it's not that easy to implement a system like the one you're suggesting. I don't see why we would want to use Bitcoin in this case?

Most merchants (toll road likely included) can safely accept a 0/unconfirmed transaction for smaller amounts as it costs a lot to attempt a double spend attack and these attacks only have a positive EV with larger amounts as they do not always succeed.

simple! would someone spend a billion dollars to double spend inorder to cheat a 2$ toll
