Title: Achilles Labs - by Ancenda Technology in Shenzhen
Post by: Egon on November 12, 2014, 08:13:50 PM
These guys were added back to the bitcoin hardware wiki on Nov 10 2014 - but I see nothing on them in the forum and can't find any real pics of their hardware, only renderings.

Any members have experience with them?  Not taking pre-orders, they claim shipping within 1-2 business days.  Bitcoin payment only.  Has all the familiar makings of a scam.

Is there anyone from Achilles Labs present on the forum that cares to comment?

I like the prices have not heard of them.  Look like renderings still, but i could be wrong on that small pictures.   I'm personally scared to order from companies without a lot of trust that are using renderings.

Prices were good as of last week but spondoolies just dropped their prices dramatically. Even with included power supplies, the AM-1700 is a little expensive at $1095. With a unit weight of 11kg, shipping will likely be more. 4U size too.

Shipping cost looks to be zero, I have just performed a checkout.

Well that would be something nice to see again from a company. They'd have to be losing though on the low end units since they are all 4U form factors. Would be great to see a review on one. We need a little "real" competition again.

I don't think that will happen here.  Renderings still, that scares me.

From the Sales Team.  My questions to them are denoted with >

Hello, [Egon],

thank you for your interest in our hardware.

  > 1) You say you do all your design in-house, does this include the chip development?  Or are you using chips designed by another ASIC company?

We are using chips purchased from another Chinese manufacturer. Further assembly is done by us.

  > 2) Can you provide any actual pictures of your miners instead of just computer renderings?

I am forwarding your request to our tech guys and hopefully they will be able to come up with something to make you a little more assured.

 Thanks.

So it seems like a scam. The other highly rated miner I've look at is called the 'Nexus' miner. 50 th/s @ 4500w. Seems legit! Oh yeah its also a dual sha/scrypt miner. Have a Google then get really eccited, then realize it's too good to be true!

I didn't try to communicate, just waited.

Looks like the projected .25w/GHS unit didn't materialize. They stopped pre-selling and the 6 THS unit now uses 3800w. (though with 2 1800w PSU's I'm not sure how that's done.)

Seems like another broken promise to me...

Anyone ever see anything from this company?  Website is still up, prices have changed as well as items available.  So they are at least pretending like they are selling out and making more.

Just wondering if anyone ever saw one of these miners?

Well, this was a rather short read and googling.  The only other thing I found on this was a rather weird mine layout (huge space with all miners stacked close together up against a wall - page may require a captcha solve to view): https://2ch.hk/cc/res/84695.html

Removed their listing from the Bitcoin wiki (jimmothy had done so previously, triggering a very short edit war - we'll see how this plays out).

Why even wait to see if it pans out.
You can buy more efficient miners for
less right now.

Removed their listing from the Bitcoin wiki (jimmothy had done so previously, triggering a very short edit war - we'll see how this plays out).
Just to update on this - they eventually re-added their listing (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Mining_hardware_comparison&action=historysubmit&diff=54624&oldid=54236) with a request not to remove it again in the edit summary.  I removed it again (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Mining_hardware_comparison&action=historysubmit&diff=54670&oldid=54624) and pointed to the wiki page's Discussion page (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Talk) where they could engage in any meaningful communication to defuse the concerns people had about their business.
Instead they reinstated their listing (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Mining_hardware_comparison&action=historysubmit&diff=54692&oldid=54670) and asked me to contact them in private (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AMining_hardware_comparison&action=historysubmit&diff=54691&oldid=54681) to explain to them exactly what concerns they had to address.  As those were already previously written, and I had no interest in taking things away from public scrutiny, I added a section to the wiki page's Discussion page that explains in detail why a hardware listing may have been removed (and how to stop that from happening) (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Talk:Mining_hardware_comparison#Why_was_my_hardware_removed.3F), and asked them to review that (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AMining_hardware_comparison&action=historysubmit&diff=54695&oldid=54694) - and rehashed some points from this thread.
At the same time, I asked one of the participants in this thread if they ever received any further information from them, and they had not.
A while later, the Discussion page's section on Achilles Labs (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AMining_hardware_comparison&action=historysubmit&diff=54744&oldid=54695) was deleted by them - however, they did not bother to re-add their hardware.

To me, that just adds to the pile of concerns, as it makes it look like they just don't want said concerns to be public and relatively visible in the wiki page's Discussion.  I may revisit that at a later time.  For now, anybody who looks them up should at least be able to find this thread, and not be led astray via the wiki.

Caveat emptor.

Anyone can edit the list. For the last month or two there is a bold header saying:

Be sure to research any of these vendors and machines intensely before spending any money.

Some manner of warning has been above the list since at least the very first revision in the wiki (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Mining_hardware_comparison&oldid=35820#ASIC), and easily since somebody added Achilles Labs (https://en.bitcoin.it/w/index.php?title=Mining_hardware_comparison&oldid=52040) (which indeed anybody can do).  While I happily removed them (which also anybody can do), editors aren't babysitters.  "But I read it on the internet!" is self-inflicted naïvité - as is paying in BTC (without a reputable escrow), for that matter.
