Unfortunately I was pool mining...

Note that I did not receive anything extra for finding it!

But still! One of my Antminer S3+ found a block shortly after I restarted them.

Has anyone else found one?

That's great! I don't think I've ever found one myself yet. Your problems with Ghash are not uncommon. Switch to a better pool. I use Eligius.

... if you're one of them people that are going to cry "omg i shoulda been mining solo!" you'd never get that block like that, it was a block within that pool, you were the lucky one to give the right share

its like you a half dozen people walking down the road, you'd be the lucky one to trip on a rock.
go by yourself, you never follow that same path to randomly trip on that rock.

Can you explain this in further detail? Maybe using a different metaphor? I'm not doubting that you are right, but I have often wondered about this myself, as I once found a block on BTCGuild, and of course, who isn't going to have that thought of "Man, if I had been solo mining"? I'll admit I've never even looked at the source code of a pool, maybe I should, but I thought that the shares i submit to a pool would be the same ones that my miner would submit if I were "mining solo", so to speak (of course, unless the pool sets your miner to only submit shares of a certain difficulty, which I suppose the majority of them do). I'm sure I'm missing some technical detail.

You're mining totally different data depending on where you're mining.

Congrats, it's it close to a miracle considering it's from an Antminer. You don't need to switch pools, finding another block wouldn't be any time soon  ;)

congrats ! judging by OP's screenshot though, a much bigger achievement was finding the chrome tab that had your mining stats :)

Since I was mining with a pool, the block with the 25 BTC got split and shared between all the miners.

I would advise them better bet in a lottery ticket rather than go solo mining.

Congrats on finding a block! That's super impressive with just a single S3. Funny how it displays the best share as 0 though - the number must be too large to display on the Antminer status page. :)

So how many of that 25 BTC did you get in result? How many people were in that pool anyway? Was it worth it?

You get paid for how much work you have put in, with my mining speed I'm earning just about 0.05 BTC every day. You don't get anything special for finding the block, atleast not with this pool. Ghash.io.


Absolutely, I will just get it confirmed with the next difficulty update. I will probably switch to eligius mining pool.

If he still feel good in mining he have to read, read, read and then take a decision where mining is good for him, but now the best move is to change pool... doesn't matter where.. ghash.io is the worst one and everyone know that.. :D

i agree it's cool to see your miner hit something.. but being in the pool he basically made the same as he would if any of the rigs hit it.. and then move on to the next

It's like to open mining company with 50.. or 500 friends and when you find block you have to split everything between everyone.. but now mining looks like that.. if you want or not.. :D

 I'm not aware of any methods of "cheating" in mining that don't end up being unprofitable in the long run...

No worries, I didn't take it personally :). I just wanted to clarify that all of the methods that I have read about that one would label as "cheating" when it comes to mining seem to be more expensive than just mining "fairly". Unless you can predict the future or have a secret charm for luck, that is. ;)

Does your pool send you a notification with congratulations?
Do they send balloons to your workplace and help you celebrate?

I just checked up my eclipsemc account and saw that I already found 2 blocks for this pool.
And I use 2 Antminers S3 here. ;)

I found 4 all in the same day with the same S3+.  I wish I was solo mining but it was on a pool.  I was like mother f***** but I'm happy I contributed.

the diff there was more affordable, i remember it , i was mining at that time, it was around 7 M

It wasn't really a pool but it was on a hash renting site.  I don't want to name names because I don't want to be looked at like a shill.  I use M's Ant monitor for all 12 of my S3s, I went to bed and didn't bother to watch the monitor at all the following day.  When I finally looked at it in the evening, it showed 4 blocks found all on the same S3+.  I couldn't believe it so I checked in the Antminer Web UI for that miner and sure as shit, it also showed 4 blocks found on the status tab.  Whoever rented my rigs made out like a mofo.

Finding a block is really lucky speciialy with so many miners.

Would of been a lot better if it was solo mining but then again might of never found the block solo mining as pool mining is combined power so its tough one to judge but none the less good one for finding the block would be nice if you actually got the 25 BTC for it would be nice Christmas for you :)

FInding a block is amazing and rare, you could have got 25 BTC reward, if you werent part of a pool.
But its hard to predict, if you ever will.

There is no way to compare finding block BTC to Alts :) Difference is far too big :) But it's true - it is always exciting ;)

Still have yet to find a block myself since the ASIC revolution, and I'm hashing 5 THash. Back when I was hashing 3 or so GHash on GPUs, I wound up discovering 11 blocks as part of a pool. It is luck and risk really. I look back and do the math thinking I could have earned 550 BTC at that time, but reality due to pool mining is I earned half that. I miss the days of pulling in 10 BTC a week... :D

GPU mining back in 2010 would porbably be really cool and easy. When was the pool system intrduced?

No, you're mining towards the pool's wallet and there is absolutely no way to redirect it.

well finding a block on the pool sure its deprecianting but in a solo mode its like 25 BTCs in one day damn could get to 7000 dollars good job

You may have had to split with others but it's still an achievement.
I wish i would mine one someday  :P

Clarifications on Pool vs Solo Mining

There seems to be a lot of (common) misconceptions when it comes to "block finding". Mainly with the pool-miner who "found the block" regretting that they didn't solo-mine because "look, i'd have 25btc now all for me". Firstly, if every pool only paid out the blockfinder, there would be little point in mining in a pool - you would be better off just solo mining like everyone else - so it works both ways - you all get paid for the shares you submit.

Anyway, now more to the main point.

When you "stratum mine" on a pool (https://mining.bitcoin.cz/stratum-mining) - You're given parts of the pool's block template, with which to "work" - which contains unique header information different to all the other miners on the pool - then you add the nonce/extranonces and so on for your asic to increment and test the hashes are below the difficulty target - meaning that you are only checking a part of the entire possibility of all variations. So finding a block in this scenario is entirely different to "solo mining", in which you would have to check all parts of the block together.
