1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Ledger nano - new btc addresses ? on: July 04, 2018, 04:52:49 AM
Hi guys
It's that time of the month again to buy some BTC.  I realized my ledger suddenly shows new public keys for me to recieve btc to. I did a test and sent myself 40 cents to my old address, and then again to the new one. The incoming and outgoing addresses were still my old public key.

And yes BCASHers, its possible to do that on bitcoin, I even sent one at 1sat/byte.

I know that one private key can generate more than one public key.
My question here is, is it fine to save one of these public keys and use it as a receive address permanently? Will my ledger just create a new receive address each time funds are received that is usable for privacy reasons ?

Only had this thing for a few weeks now, so im new to these kinds of wallets.

P.S. I see unconfirmed transactions are quite low today, I can turn all my inputs into one input by sending my BTC to myself right ?
2  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / What does a non-mining node do for the network? on: July 03, 2018, 05:55:12 AM
Hi Guys
Hoping some of the smarter people here can educate me. I see a lot of mentions of run your own node.  But what is the point of it? If my node never wins a block then what impact can it actually have on bitcoins security?

I see a reason for doing it if you are a merchant and want to see if transactions are sent to you immediately, or if you want to do it for LN. But why run one as a normal bitcoin dude?
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If states truly would want to get rid of cryptocurrencies on: June 06, 2018, 10:59:46 AM
Refer to Bitcoin Jesus's video below. He says it quite well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncPyMUfNyVM

There is no way that a government gets hold of and installs millions of antminers, powers them and manages to sustain the attack. Think of the logistics behind it. Consider how much electricity they will need, they will probably need to power down their entire country, and after all that they can just do one double spend.

thats a great post, however there is also non governmental threats, and so called de facto centralisation, if big miner pools associate themselves.

Well let's say Antpool wants to be malicous.  How long do you think it'l take for that to get noticed and word to spread? The pool is centralized, but remember it is made up by thousands of individual miners. They will instantly leave the pool and mine elsewhere.

This has happened in the past when one of the major pools were approaching 50% hashrate. Word spread fast and people left the pool. All individual miners will act to protect the network even within one pool. If a pool attempts an attack they will probably fail to get sufficient hashrate, and will lose all their miners before the attack can even really happen.

5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Over 90% of ICOs are a scam on: June 05, 2018, 03:26:32 PM
The word scam is being thrown away too loosely these days. A Scam is something that was intended to steal your money and never deliver on anything, such as TBAR. If a project fails to deliver what it hoped to deliver because of things like regulations or the fact that the Ethereum we have today doesn't scale, or it was maybe just a bad idea that never needed a blockchain in the first place.. Then that is not a scam.

I say, 90% of ICOs will fail, but not 90% of them are scams. Most of them are trying to achieve their roadmaps. Most of what we have in crypto is also severely overpriced.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: RippleNet is counting its number of customers. on: June 05, 2018, 02:35:53 PM
There are three coins I vow to never touch, Ripple, BCH and Bitconnect. The issue is Ripple goes against all the core principles of cryptocurrency. It is completely centralized. You do not hold a private key in Ripple, you have a login username and password to claim your funds.

To call this an investment is also incorrect. The risk in Ripple is just way too high. Remember the CEO holds like 2/3 of the supply. So whatever the price is right now, it is much more than it should be. What happens when the other 2/3 enters the market? This is similar to quarkchain, whos ICO I didn't get into. There is no point in me buying their token now. It is valued at about 24 cents with a current circulating supply of 400million. So far so good yea? But the max supply is 10 billion, and the circulating supply will increase by over a billion in a few months. The current price will not be sustainable if you consider the extra supply that is coming in. Who wouldn't dump at 10 or 20x ROI ?

Sorry this post is harsh to you ripple lovers. But this is my 5 cents. Wish you guys the best of luck, but I'm not touching this Smiley
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: What's up with Quarkchain?13x in a day! on: June 05, 2018, 05:01:18 AM
Well I missed the 60 point requirement to enter the lottery to qualify for the ICO by 0.55 points.  Right now its up more than 13x.

Regrettably I did not make a fortune with it. I would have literally been debt free if I got into the ICO now. Times like this that you just say **** Life.

Congrats to those who got into the ICO though. I'll probably buy some tokens anyway, but not at this price. A 10 bil max supply coin should not be going at this current price. The Presale guys will be releasing a large chunk into the market as well, which seems like a bit of a risk to me right now. In 3 or so months that should start having less of an impact I think.

Fantastic project though. QKC will do well.
8  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How do I see the contents of the blockchain on a full node on: June 04, 2018, 07:21:50 PM
Thanks bob. Yea I am busy learning this stuff. I basically want to monitor my wallet myself off my own node.

Ill check into these things you sent. Have a good one mate.
9  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / How do I see the contents of the blockchain on a full node on: June 04, 2018, 09:35:27 AM
Hi guys
Is it possible to read the contents of my copy of the blockchain as a txt file or anything? I havent setup a full node yet due to the size of it but I would like to do a few things with the content.

I have checked for other monero forks that I have a copy of the chain for but didn't see anything where I could see the ledger in. I specifically want to see this for BTC.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help pls for password on: June 04, 2018, 05:03:04 AM
Your best bet is to create a new wallet and send all your coins there. Remember you need to consider any PC's or smartphones you used to be compromised now. Don't create the wallet on them.  Use a different PC, maybe your one of the office to create a new MEW address.  Save the private key on a flash drive and send the tokens over to the new wallet.

I would suggest you format your PC and change all passwords. A paid antivirus might also be a good idea. If you have anything else in an exodus wallet or anything then you should move all that to a new wallet as well.

Sorry for your loss mate.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Another ICO goes to zero! on: June 02, 2018, 08:37:43 AM
OMG. I saw this topic and didn't expect it to be an ICO I was into. RIP the price..

Worst thing is one of my mates invested a large chunk of his very small portfolio into this. Luckily I only put in 100 dollars because they never released a whitepaper explaining how packet switching would work on a blockchain.  The tech the claimed to have was close my heart so I still just went in with a small amount despite not being convinced they can technically do it. (kept wondering how things like MPLS and routing protocols would work. How a packet can be switched in a decentralized way )

I never thought Stollaire would be a scammer, I did see him as a pure salesman who over hypes things though;

Goodluck to everyone who got burned hard. Remember we will all get burned in this space sometimes. Just keep at it and become more cautious each time it happens. Any win in an ICO is more than enough to make up for when you get burned.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: EOS Crashing Ethereum on: May 29, 2018, 06:37:39 AM
This is entirely possible.  A month or so ago I totaled the ETH amounts on eosscan. They raised over 5 million ether in their ICO. That means EOS hold 5% of the Ether supply.  If it is not them doing i t now then one day they will be doing it.

Dumping 5 million ETH can drastically drop the price.
13  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Cost of 51% Attack $2,270,712,250.38 (rindex.io) on: May 29, 2018, 05:44:08 AM
That is quite interesting, does anyone know the cost for Verge as they just dealt with the issues? Thanks

The attacks on verge were not real 51% attacks as far as I know. The attacked exploited a glitch in the code around block timestamps which they were supposed to have fixed. In basic english the guy was messing around with the times that blocks were created to earn free verge.

14  Other / Meta / Re: It's very difficult to get merit and higher ranks don't like bounty to be a job? on: May 28, 2018, 08:59:11 AM
Don't see this forum as a "job", if you want a job then get a real one. The bounties here are just some extra BTC on the side. You really shouldn't be relying on these for an income.

You should come to bitcointalk to debate things and learn things, to help newcomers learn stuff. Whatever you get or don't get from sig campaigns is just gravy.

This is kind of the same as the "HODL" all your BTC motto people have these days. It is ignoring the main use case and in essence making it worthless. This forum is here for us all to discuss every aspect of cryptocurrency, that is the primary use case. Lets keep it to that, and dont hodl BTC, spend and replace. A currency with no circulation is worthless and so is a forum that is full of "how do I get merit?" posts.

15  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Solar Panels Produce Toxic Waste on: May 28, 2018, 06:48:16 AM
Well there is still wind and hydro power plants. The problem is that all the clean alternatives cannot generate power every hour of every day in the year.
If you look back 15 years though, technology has come very far. Someone will invent something that actually works to sort this issue out at an affordable price.

I am not too worried, we still have plenty of time left to go over to clean energy since only some cities are badly polluted, most of the planet is still fine for now.
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to choose best ICO among many new ICOs on: May 24, 2018, 09:51:51 PM
If you are new I would advise you to not go into ICOs for now.  Learn the industry, technology and market first. You are very likely to make a bad call if you go for an ICO now. Most of them are complete shitcoins targetting a use case that doesn't need a blockchain. Most are pure hype.

I have in the last month made more gains swing trading the top 30 than I have in ICO's. That I would also advise you to keep away from. At the very least do these things with a minute amount of money. Do not go in hard and big, with trading as well. I was trading with no more than 20 dollars for 5 months so I could learn my lessons.

You need to get your toes wet one day, but first make sure you personally know whats what. Don't trust anyone, you need to validate information and the legitimacy of an ICO yourself. The best ICO is one you believe in, not one that some youtuber shills in a sponsored video he got a few BTC for.
17  Other / Meta / Re: If this contiunes, we'll lose the Bitcoin Discussion topic on: May 24, 2018, 09:34:17 PM
If these are individual newbies who don't know whats what yet, I think something like a "search FAQ" bar that opens as you type your topic to recommend threads that ask the same question it might help reduce this. By this I mean something similar to binance when you open a ticket and it recommends similar things in the FAQ as you type your question.

I myself have posted a few bitcoin technical questions which I was sure that someone else has had to ask it in the past, unfortunately finding similar posts is a bit hard in some cases with the massive loads of topics being created, the problem kind of makes itself worse and snowballs on itself. Improving on the search functionality to make it "nicer" would definitely help.  I am not sure as to what kind of load this'l add on the servers and how much of a workload it would be on the forums developers though.

On the other note, it is kind of a pity that people are repeat answering a question with the same answer just to get posts for their bounties. (Yes I know I have a sig in my profile, I get it the hypocrisy - I really try add new value to a discussion each time I post). I find that unless it is a very interesting topic and discussion people just read the first post and answers and moves on. I think somehow the idea of adding value to a discussion with a post needs to be reiterated. There is zero value in giving the same answer as everyone else.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Alt coin are waiting for movement of Bitcoin. on: May 24, 2018, 09:13:07 PM
Altcoins have already lost a ton of BTC value, most of them have dropped around 25% against btc the last few days. The reason for this I think is that people look at things in dollar and start selling when they lose their precious fiat value.

There is no reason I can see for an altcoin to lose BTC value if BTC is losing USD value apart from people selling when they lose USD.
In a bear market the best thing to hold is BTC, it always goes down the least.
19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why investors do not care about the bitcoin exchange rate fluctuation? on: May 24, 2018, 08:42:11 PM
They do not give two craps about lambos on the moon or gainz with many z's. These guys are experienced and serious at investing unlike most of us. So whatever happens short term is irrelevant to these guys. Why would you lose sleep if one investment is doing poorly when you have 20 different ones going?  - Therein lies the difference between plebs like most of us and real investors I think.

20  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Does modern civilization is currently progressing or declining? on: May 24, 2018, 08:29:43 PM
I think we are getting more intelligent as a race, but humans are devolving quickly getting weaker by the day. If you look at how easily offended and lazy people are becoming it is depressing, especially in the first world. (I know I am generalizing, ofc there are tons of strong hard workers left)

Life is becoming too easy imho in the good countries, at least looking at it as an outsider living in the third world.  You basically can just ride the welfare train and live a decent life sponging off your government. This is very detrimental to the world, once people who contribute nothing to their fellow man and national economy reaches critical mass then bad times lay ahead.

People should always be aware where money comes from, that it comes from hard work and nobody is simply entitled to it for no reason. Where the freedoms we enjoy today come from, that people in the past gave their lives fighting for it.
