2  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience has a new stickminer that does 300+GH on: January 03, 2022, 09:31:49 PM
That's an effective summary of why I care so little about USB-C devices. Only two ports at a time, and no PD+data, doesn't quite mean it's useless but certainly doesn't help anything.

Now people do like USB-C cables enough that future pods are likely to have USB-C connectors, but it'll still be a basic USB2 with no power draw. Just using the cable people like.

I like USB-C simply because it tries to eliminate the Schrödinger USB paradox. Tripp lite did try to fix this with the Universal Reversable USB cable though, https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-Universal-Reversible-UR050-003-RA/dp/B00ESZIIRU

If you running on Windows and not getting a stable hashrate, I would add the gekko lowboost flag, check the first post for reference.

as os2sam said, you have to run zadig  to update the drivers for every unit attached to windows. by default even after installed one, windows will default to the wrong driver when you plug a new one in.

Hey 419! Thanks for the reply. I bought these from you guys actually and I got 5 more coming in today or tomorrow! So I'll have a total of 6 soon. I had did everything from the front page and I already got one stick running. I built my command line myself and got my stick to mine fine. My Questions are; how to put more than one stick in the command lines in the .BAT file. Also, I don't see a '+' symbol at the end of my miner name in cgminer. How do I enable this?

Thanks,

Cole

As to what the others have said, your up and running with AsicBoost correctly, as you add more units to your build, make sure you run zadig driver update with all the new units plugged in. Once they have the USB driver, cgminer will pick them up on the next startup without adding anything extra to your command line.

How would I type the command to use the boost? Also, how would I add other sticks to the command?

The current build we use for cgminer (posted on the front page, or downloaded from your supplier) have these automatically tuned on by default now. Unless you are having a problem that requires this to be turned down or off, no additional switches are required.

If you look at your cgminer window, you can see that AsicBoost is enabled by the + symbol at the end of the miner name.

its hard to say, trial and error are you best option, if one stick works fine, add a second, then a third and so on till you find a combination that causes the issue your seeing. It may be a bad miner unit, a bad port on the hub, a bad usb cable or even a bad network connection. zombies are often caused by missing nonce restarts, and missing nonce restarts are often caused by the individual chips (there are 2 on each unit) either A, not getting enough power, or B not responding in a timely manner to cgminers request for work. This can be caused by data interruptions anywhere along the chain because of bad equipment or even just overloaded equipment.

Once you isolate the issue, we can work at finding the cause of the issue and correct it. it may be as simple as using a different USB port on the PC or replacing a USB miner that interrupting the data flow but thats a step later. First, we have to find the cause, then we find the solution.

these numbers are rough, not accurate, but close.

The 8A 12V power supply is enough to run multiple units, 8A 12V offers a power output of around 96 Watts. When converted to 5V at the USB ports, that offers around 19 amps of power at the USB ports. If you remove 10% for loss (and thats ALOT more than real numbers) you still have 17.28 Amps of power.

At the default frequency of 100MHz, the NewPac runs at 22.8 GH pulling 3.5Watts or 0.7Amps, less if you add cooling. long story short, at default frequencies, you can run a full gekkoscience hub (6 units) without a problem.
When properly cooled, the power draw is actually less. when cooled to the point you can actually hold onto the unit, at 200Mhz, it pulls somewhere around 1 amp per unit. again, more than enough for 6 units.

just remember the Units should be in 2 -7. use ports 1 and D for accessories (fans).

In short, yes. In long there is no way to say no 100%, 99.9% of all motherboards and USB switches have "limiters" (point-of-load switches with over-current detection) built in to prevent that. 10Watts is only 2 Amps though, and most modern USB ports can handle 2 amps.

I know its daunting looking through the 80 pages of posts. Maybe Sidehack/VH can update the first page with all the config settings cgminer now supports?

you may want to try --gekko-start-freq, I havent gone through the code on github to see if it works for terminus but it would be worth a quick try. like you said, letting it autotune is best, but this is the one your looking for: --gekko-tune-down

[90-95]% is a healthy range, 95 is default, set to 0 to disable.
        1.  Adjusts frequency according to each miner's unique charateristics
        2.  To keep a hash performance above 95%.
        3.  Based on the idea that (95% of 275MHz) hashes better than (80% of 300MHz)

First, can you confirm you have some active cooling? above 100Mhz, newpacs get very hot and will jump into thermal runaway and shutdown/burn out very fast.

What exactly is happening when you try to overclock? Is it throwing an error or just not allowing you to set it above 100Mhz?

its a long one, but with the 12 unit plugged in can you tell me what the output from this powershell command is?

Code:
gwmi Win32_USBControllerDevice |%{[wmi]($_.Dependent)} | Sort Manufacturer,Description,DeviceID | Ft -GroupBy Manufacturer Description,Service,DeviceID

Thanks again for the replies, you guys help is really appreciated!

I think something got mixed up here. I do only own ONE NewPac ASIC stick, not two. Maybe i was a bit unclear about that.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with computerrestarts after every step. -> same error as before
Also i tried to run cgminer on a different laptop (also win10) which gave the same error pattern.

Windows shows that the driver works correctly after installation using zadig.

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried putting it back on the Pi that it was working on prior to moving to the PC? If it still acts the same way, I would reach out to the reseller you purchased the unit from, they would be able to assist you further.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. What would you recommend as some good fans? I am thinking of these, perhaps 2? I am not very sure if they will push enough air but noticed everyone says they are dead silent. Thanks.

https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-Breeze-Mobile-Flexible-Portable/dp/B003XN24GY

they work fine for a few newpacs, anything around 5 or more i would get a top down fan that moves more air (12v high flow). we have a few options on our website.

Also, https://www.ebay.com/itm/254154810314. its a little cheaper and we ship a lot faster than Amazon right now.

Hurricandave is right, if they worked prior to moving to the pc, its more than likely an issue with the pc, not the miners, especially if they are both acting that way. If your running a single newpac, yes, that hub should be sufficient. Make sure rerun zadig on the pc, verify they are using the WinUSB driver and not "FTDIBUS" that they default to.

Hey Guys, im new to Cryptomining and got myself a NewPac and this USB hub: https://www.amazon.de/atolla-Netzteil-SuperSpeed-Datenhub-Intelligenter-Schwarz/dp/B07P6MPXJ7...

Hey bassrelic,

i noticed your hub only has a 5V3A power supply

"【USB 3.0 hub power supply】 - The 5V / 3A wall charger supplies the USB hub"
at 3A, that would not provide enough power to run multiple miners, have you tried running a single USB miner at a time and see how they work then?

are you receiving a specific error from cgminer or does the computer just not detect the 8th unit?

mine Newpac wont start hashing while the other Newpac(s) does work.
I already tried rotating the voltage screw. Need help real quick

have you tried running at 100Mhz to see what the unit does at stock speeds?

I know you said you have good cooling on it, so its most likely not a overheating issue. Can you try unplugging it for an hour or so and see if it works after that? just give it a nice rest to discharge and reset all the vcore strings.

it sounds strange, but does correct the issue some times.

sounds like a Kernel panic, theres a known bug in cgminer on Raspbian having to do with the SLUB debugging (slub_debug=FP fix) that causes kernel panic. This may not be the problem, but a good place to start. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=494625.msg5932931#msg5932931

I cant speak to the PC, never used a microPC as the controller, have you tried using a different port? If using a USB3 port, try the USB2 port or vice versa.
