1  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [~600Gh/s] Bitcoins.lc - No invalid blocks, Instant payout, EU, IPv6, 0% fee, LP on: August 20, 2011, 08:21:49 AM
This is probably just an error on my end, but attempting to log on to the site simply refreshes the page. My miner is still mining away, and I was able to log in this afternoon, so I'll see if it just fixes itself overnight.
Same here, cannot log in. I've been throwing my entire 1.3 GH/s at this pool since it was only 80GH/s small quite a while ago... Great interface, and you don't rip off people (like deepbit and btcmine).
Even with all your setbacks and downtime in the beginning, I gotta say great work!
2  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: what is the best non-doublewide card out there? on: June 25, 2011, 08:22:39 PM
Because you're paying more. You could buy more video cards with the extra money thus get more power.

You could buy a gold encrusted 6990 for 10k, sure it gets the same performance but the point is you're wasting money.
Great resale value, though.
I lol'd hard!

@Canaryinthemine
You may have problems with temperatures on those cards (ok not on the 6990...), that might make you turn the oc down -> less MH/s. Also since you want single slot I assume you only have one slot free i.e. these cards will suffocate even more. the only good solution is a WC loop.
3  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTB] I'll pay 20 BTC for a Google Nexus One unlocked, shipped on: June 25, 2011, 01:20:43 PM
I was under the impression the developer version allowed you to do things that the normal one couldn't, like look at copy-protected market apps, etc?

Developer version? lol.

You didn't know those existed?
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/08/nexus-one-developer-phone.html

Same with the developers' G1, its so much more expensive. But I doubt OP wants that' they want android instead of the iPhone so probably not a developer.
4  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What card to get? on: June 24, 2011, 08:31:14 PM
This keeps being spewed around as if miners are just blindly buying ineffective hardware.

The fact is that the 6990 is a great miner because:

1. It has two GPU's in 1 card
2. If your motherboard has 2 PCI-e slots, you can turn them into 4 gpu's worth of hashing power.
3. If your motherboard has 4 PCI-e slots, you can turn them into 8 gpu's worth of hashing power.

In the case of single core GPU's, you would now have to buy 2 computers with 2 power supplies, processors, motherboards, RAM, casing etc.

So in the end you save space & don't have to buy a second rig to house more cards & you get greater resale value.

This keeps getting spewed around because its true for most people. For the price of one 6990 without a new system, I can get an entire pc with 3 5850s that have better cooling and 50% higher hash rate. Thats only for the 6990 (580 euros minimum). It doesn't matter how many spare slots you have on your mobo, at 750MH for 580 euros, it simply cannot be justified. At all. Not even by power consumption. If you are considering spending 600 euros on mining equipment, I suggest spending 50 more, and buying 2 mobos, psus, cpus, hdds, and 4 5830s or 3 5850s and get 50% more hash rate at only 50% more power consumption.

Also consider noise. If you put a 6990 in your living room/pc room/bedroom, it becomes uninhabitable. A separate rig can be put into your basement or an unused room. Heat generation can also be a problem. My 2 rigs are in a guest room with full open windows 24/7. 3 5830s and a 6950 mining 24/7 generate around 35C ambient in the room, with outdoor temp around 20C. I don't care because I'm not there, but back when it was in my room it used to be really hot.
5  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: flashing a 6950 with 1GB using the 6970 with 2GB BIOS on: June 24, 2011, 07:36:29 PM
If you're unlucky, you will permanently brick it (thats where the bios switch saves the day). But since it won't work, there's no point trying. Most of the time though, you will be able to reflash it.
6  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: New bitcoin machine: To buy or not to buy? on: June 23, 2011, 01:12:13 PM
you are late, if you have to ask that question, the answer is to NOT BUY.
Sad Angry Cry Cry
I have the money ready, i would hate to lose it on nothing, but still, despite the current un-stable situation there is hope in the future right?

I'd say buy in, but start small. You say you have a gaming rig, then why do you need an 890fx board? If you want to use it as a pure miner, buy a VERY cheap mobo with 2 pcie slots or even 1 x16 and 1 x1. get a sempron 140, you dont need a dual core. And unless you care about your power consumption, don't get a 5770, get a 5830 or even 6950 (in the US 58xx seem to be rare I hear). You could also consider getting a second hand 775 board with a pentium, or 939/AM2 board. Worst case, you will lose much less than with your setup.

Otherwise, you could build a gaming rig with good mining GPUs, mine for a bit and then sell it to a gamer for good cash and little loss...
7  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Different PSUs for different GPUs on: June 23, 2011, 01:00:30 PM
Its no problem, takes about 1 minute. If you know what connections are required, you can DIY it, but I'd recommend getting one of those adapters for the 20/24pin lead.
8  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: The real deal with designing a mining rig on: June 23, 2011, 12:44:24 PM
Number of GPUs is certainly the biggest factor!  Nothing can touch the two-chips-on-one-card cards!
Number of shaders is how many simultaneous operations you can perform
Speed of core is how fast each one goes.

Clearly the last two work together to determine a cards potential hash rate.

What do you mean? My two-chips-on-two-cards (5830+6950) cost 1/2 of a 6990 and give more MH/s, less heat, less noise, less power use. ok they use 2 pcie slots, but for the difference in price I can get an entire new mobo+cpu+ram setup...

OP: in short, there's no such comparison for complete systems. You dont need a good cpu for mining, nor ram/video ram. You even downclock video ram to give less heat... It looks like the # of shader units determines the hash rates (and then the core speed of course).

Try to add up costs, and find whats best for you based on hardware prices/electricity cost. I don't care about electricity costs, so I run 3x5830s and a shader unlocked 6950. If you do, consider getting 5770s; they're the best in MH/joule. PSU is scaled to your PC needs. I have found that the best system for me is a small 2 slot mobo for 55 euros, sempron 140, 2gb ram, and 500W antec psu with 2 5830s.

If you wanna run a bigger system, check the prices of psus vs. watts they deliver. I really recommend using multiple psus (if you're running without a case), its no hassle to set up only takes 1 minute, and can be scaled better. Plus, most of the time, its cheaper at >900W.

Can you find a reference 2 GB 6950 that unlocks to a 6970 for that price?

Here 1gb 6950s (the unlockable ones) go for just under 200 euros, reference ones 220 (99% of those can be unlocked). You are asking for 225 euros (including shipping) at current BTC price. just sayin'...
10  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: flashing a 6950 with 1GB using the 6970 with 2GB BIOS on: June 23, 2011, 10:04:53 AM
Don't do eet! You'll brick your card! They are incompatible!
I suggest going to some hardware forum and asking first or finding some info before you do anything. check this post http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1037084150&postcount=16.
You don't have a bios switch right?
Once you're confident enough that you know what you're doing, dump your bios, make about 15 backup copies, modify it with RBE, and pray that you can flash it back. Or, even better, see if you can find an already modded, working bios for YOUR SPECIFIC CARD on a forum.
good luck
11  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Is Antec 380 PSU enough for a Radeon 6950? on: June 23, 2011, 09:54:24 AM
Should be fine. Depending on what the other components are, but with a 95W CPU and other stuff your 100% load will be ~350W at most. Remember while you're mining, the CPU isn't at 100%, or if its a sempron, it will only pull 45W. I think you'd even be able to put catalyst power control to +20...
12  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: AOCLBF (was Phoenix Rising): Front End GUI to Phoenix/POCLBM on: June 23, 2011, 09:35:45 AM
Hi
First off, I LOVE your program! switched from guiminer and never looked back.
I have a problem with OC settings though, both with catalyst set to startup or not, aoclbf won't retain or apply OC settings (at startup).
Its a great tool for OCing, especially since I'm running a 6950 and a 5830 in one machine and have had loads of problems with the setup, until you added the GPU settings tab... hewever even when I get a stable OC manually set in aoclbf, apply and accept "set clocks on startup" box, it won't apply on a PC restart.
I'm running 1.71 btw.
13  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: dual 6990 ~1400mhash -> solo or pool? on: June 19, 2011, 05:54:37 PM
I used to use deepbit but then switched to BTCMine, and finally bitcoins.lc. They are the best so far, the interface is great, size around 400GH/s, 0%fees, no payout confirmation period, very accurate MH/s estimations for all miners, they will also soon add buying and selling capabilities. At the moment, miners still have auto generated names/passwords, but that is going to change soon too.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 19, 2011, 02:54:44 PM
When you are told something is bad, unprofitable or just plain going to fail enough times you will start to believe it...people spend a lot more time discrediting bitcoin than they do praising it...its pretty obvious that the news articles are biased/not factual.  It gives the appearance of conspiracy for sure...just go try to post in a random forum about bitcoin, there will be someone (possibly more than one) immediately posting trying to "save" people before they get involved in this scam...I have never seen this kind of "concern" before online.  Just what I have noticed.

I think that is more down to the people's ignorance on the matter of bitcoins. I mean you can't blame them, it took me a while too to figure out why I am getting money for running my GPU at 100%. What you can blame them for is spreading information they are not certain about or have not received confirmation on. Look at the original article with Schumer and the other senator. It said bitcoin is "untraceable" so now all these anti-bitcoin idiots keeping repeating that although its not even close to being true, or is taken out of context.
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 19, 2011, 02:25:02 PM
I see you are not the only one that has studied NLP. The population would not be so easily manipulated if they studied NLP particularly anchoring, and media spin techniques. Most people will reject your message if you tell them that they are being manipulated because they feel bad about being manipulated and rejection is the easiest away out (it is what is known in psychology as a fight-response). It takes a whole generation (20 years) to subvert a population, but once it is done they will fight anything that doesn't match the beliefs that are put into their minds due to years of social programming.

"If an intelligent human being was raised in Nazi-Germany, he would become a Nazi faster" -- Jacque Fresco

So people, do what the politicians tell you to do:
Consume, consume, consume and save the obsolete growth-based economy! ;-)

Casper

I do not see how this is applicable to the hardcore bitcoin people. They are in this because they reject the mainstream media's and the government's (same thing btw) propaganda and brainwashing, not in order to earn a quick buck. I admit I joined in June when it started rising exponentially at around $13, but that's because I had just heard of it. I was 24/7 f@h before, and I would have instantly joined this project before had I heard about it, just as I will be here long after the hype is gone or if mining becomes unprofitable, simply due to the freedom bitcoin offers.

I agree there is a lot of brainwashing going on, mostly with fear mongering in the US, but in other places you have a choice. In Nazi-Germany, mainstream media was the only source of information for people, of course they were easily manipulated to the politicians' ends. However today there are so many more sources of information, that people can make up their own minds. And please don't tell me the internet is a government conspiracy, because I'll have to stand up again to get my tinfoil hat.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Allinvain $500,000 theft & Black Friday related? CIA / Banker Attacks? on: June 19, 2011, 12:13:16 PM
Wait where is it? *rummaging in closet* .... damn I can't find it.... *more rummaging* A HA! There it is! *puts on tinfoil hat*...
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 5830's back in stock at Newegg - $110 Shipped on: June 18, 2011, 03:27:47 PM
That's a pretty neat deal. Over here they are about 100 euro's per card... Newegg doesn't ship to the Netherlands, does it?  Grin
Hey I'm in NLD too and I got my 3 at Alternate for 94 each. Otherwise, you could get them from Germany for 88 Euros each... have a couple friends there that will get me some.

where can you get them for 88€ each?

they seem to be a pretty good investment in terms of hashing power per initial cost, how do they perform in the long run? Watts vs. hasing power?

edit: fixed typo
search hardwareschotte.de for 5830. The cheapest one is 88.20 or something, but only if you are referred by the price comparison site. Shipping is also dirt cheap at 3.90 per shipment (not per card!!).
18  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bcast - BTC price live feed in your toolbar - A request for it on: June 18, 2011, 03:19:23 PM
That's great! Many thanks Mt Gox Live is v good for me, I may need to look in to a second screen *adds to wish list* How come though the BTC (bid, ask & contracts) price there is about one $ more than TradeHill's, I expect it's obvious like the fees or something but easier to ask than to try & work it out, lots more volume than TradeHill so truer price I guess
Because tradehill has what 15 transactions an hour? Mt.Gox has that in 10 seconds. They're simply not keeping up with the price.
19  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Need PSU Suggestions for 3 HD5850's and 1 HD5870 please on: June 18, 2011, 03:10:20 PM
Corsair 850TX might work but don't bet on it, XFX 850W Pro Core will work I think. Otherwise you'd be looking into much higher power PSUs, and terrible value for money. I'd suggest staying with the PSU you have now, and getting a cheap additional 400W to power two cards. Unless of course you're looking to expand operations in the near future and would like to keep your current psu for that, then go for the XFX. Here in Europe its about 100 euros, I think I saw it on Newegg for 139.99 at some point.
20  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What card to get? on: June 18, 2011, 02:55:07 PM
You couldn't have seen the 6990x2, since it doesn't exist. 6990's are NOT good for mining in terms of euro/MHash or euro/Watt, especially for you, OP. In your situation, I would go for a 5830, you could crossfire it with your 5850 for gaming, and it would be the best value for money you can get. Where are you located, I might be able to help you with prices. I just got 3 5830's in Holland, but there's even better prices in France, Germany/Austria, etc.
