Aside from this i wanna hear from them about multiple customers having their accounts cleared out.

Kraken's got an opportunity to go to the next level but there are some niggles i don't like the sound of.

This is about that.

https//www.kraken.com/ is getting the shout out for being the first exchange to take some serious steps towards proving their bitcoin solvency. Their solution ( https://www.kraken.com/security/audit ) is not perfect but it's better than what any other exchange has done so far. It's going to be just 2 weeks because it's not a full proof of solvency i.e. it still depends on trust to the auditor. I'm happy to promote them because based on my talk with them my subjective opinion is that they know what they are doing.

They plan to release audits quarterly. I definitely would like to see these more often, and with direct proof of control of the bitcoins. I hope this is just a first step to a better future when such proofs become a standard. But a lot of this depends on the community. You can ask your exchange to improve their transparency, and you can vote with your money.

Comboy, this is awesome!  Thank you so much for providing some additional incentive and reward for this audit to take place.  I honestly hope that in two weeks someone else is ready to take the spot with something even better.  Let's keep the industry moving forward!

RESULT: >100% reserves

March 22, 2014
San Francisco

This post is to report on an audit I performed for the Kraken Bitcoin exchange on March 11th, 2014 and March 22nd, 2014 at their offices here in San Francisco. I've not received any payment for this audit - my personal goal with this is to help improve the stability of and confidence in the math-based currency industry overall.

Statement
=========

The audit process is designed to allow the auditor - in this case me, Stefan Thomas - to verify that the total amount of bitcoins held by Kraken matches the amount required to cover an anonymized set of customer balances. I am attesting to is the root hash of a merkle tree containing all balances that were considered in the audit. If you are a customer of Kraken, you'll be able to verify using open-source tools that your balance at the time of the audit is part of this root hash. If it is and if you believe that I am trustworthy, then you can be confident that your balance was covered by 100% reserves at the time of the audit.

Compared to audits performed by other exchanges, this approach is very strict while still maintaining absolute privacy for customers. The most difficult part of an audit is normally to verify that the exchange is not under-reporting the number and balances of account holders. With this approach each account holder can verify that they were considered in the audit.

Trust in this type of audit still requires trust in the auditor. For now, this will rest on my shoulders, but Kraken have expressed interest in doing regular audits with different auditors each time. This serves to renew the audit and also to increase the confidence in the audit process and the validity of the result.

Claims
======

Claim 1: Kraken controls a certain amount of Bitcoins.

Proof: Kraken provided a JSON file with a list of their Bitcoin addresses and balances. I used the `cryptoshi audit` command in libcoin to verify the JSON file against a copy of the block chain.

The version of libcoin used was commit f8c66accf2af88c039bd7c6678da7a338b8befa0.

Here is the audit code used:

https://github.com/libcoin/libcoin/blob/f8c66accf2af88c039bd7c6678da7a338b8befa0/applications/cryptoshi/cryptoshi.cpp#L637-691

Claim 2: The amount from claim 1 is greater than the amount contained in the root hash of balances.

Proof: Kraken provided a binary file containing a set of user balances. This binary file can read and manipulated using the tool "krakendb".

The version of krakendb used was commit 78d3504a7d68256a9a664125fa86a224c479ad42

Available at: https://github.com/payward/krakendb

To calculate the sum of all balances in the tree as well as a merkle tree of all balances, I used the "krakendb root" command. The root hash was:

306daae528dc137c9053554c45e90a631ef859490a3ede651d488135602500a3

The actual holdings were very slightly (< 0.5%) above the required holdings, meaning Kraken had greater than 100% reserves at the audit block height.

I agree with martinhyl.
Kraken has been having major problems with deposits and withdrawals, especially USD deposits and withdrawals
The customer support was very slow to address this issue, until they finally said no more USD withdrawals.
Kraken CEO Jesse Powell recently posted a comment on CoinDesk denying that Kraken has suspended USD withdrawals, even though many of us had received an email from Kraken advising us of that situation.
My concern is that Kraken's CEO Jesse Powell is another Mark Karpeles.

Hey guys,

If we said no more USD withdrawals, I'm unaware of that statement.  We canceled pending USD withdrawals to give people both the opportunity to trade in a down market (many were asking), and to convert USD balances to EUR, which would help you get your withdrawals faster.  You're right that we've been having a ton of trouble with our USD bank, and a little trouble with our EUR bank, and no trouble with bitcoin.  We're doing the best we can with what we've got and to a large extent we are at the mercy of our gateways to the legacy financial system.  If our USD bank says we can only send 10 wires a day, that's how many wires go out, and that's how a backlog is created.  If our EUR bank has no limit on wires, surely, it'd make sense to encourage people to convert their balances to EUR, receive a generous bonus, and withdraw that way.  We can't force anyone to convert balances so we have to ask you.  If you want to withdraw USD now you can go ahead and put the request in and jump in the queue but if you want it soon, my advice is to convert your balance to EUR and withdraw it that way.  We shut off USD deposits because we knew that they would be creating new USD withdrawal requests that were beyond our capacity.  So, our goal is to get out of USD entirely until we have a much stronger banking partner for USD.  It really hasn't been worth the headache.

I can understand your concern and I can assure you that your funds are safe.  We'll be providing results of an audit this week, which I hope will allay your fears.  In the meantime, I highly encourage you to convert your USD balance to EUR and withdraw EUR.  The 2% bonus you receive will more than cover any conversion rates you pay back to USD at your bank.  If you don't mind waiting what might be 2 more weeks, please do keep your USD balance and withdraw that.  Effectively, they're the same option, just one is faster and nets you more money, and we can't force you to take it.

I'm really sorry for all the trouble we've caused and the poor service we've given to USD customers.  We will be very careful about opening other fiat support in the future, making sure that the bank will be able to handle projected volumes.  In this case, our bank was initially supportive of what we were doing but as our volumes went up, they got more restrictive.  Unfortunately, it's not a situation that is negotiable.  In the United States, banks don't have to take your account and they can terminate you at any time, for any reason.

I hope you'll continue to use the service and I hope we can give you a better experience going forward.  Thanks for voicing your concerns and giving me a chance to respond.  Clearly, we all need to be scrutinizing of the people we trust to hold our money.

Jesse

The event's scale was widely disputed; some report a theft of almost 500000 BTC due to related account hacking. However, these reports are sparse and disreputable. Closer inspection puts the losses at closer to 2500 BTC.
They proved they had 500k coins back then. But they were the only big exchange in june 2011. What if they actually had over one million?

We know that they had around 60,000 users back in June 2011 from the leaked database, but those were all early adopters and people may have thought nothing of leaving tens/hundreds of thousands of bitcoins on the exchange--it didn't represent that much money.  They could easily have had over a million bitcoin on deposit.  When bitcoin was $1, Gox may have thought that being down $800k wasn't insurmountable, but time went on and bitcoin continued to grow in value beyond their expectations, sending the target further and further out.  They were essentially short bitcoin, which clearly has been a bad bet but if they'd been able to keep up and continue pulling fees in bitcoin, it's conceivable they would have broken even at some point.  They could also have made money back by playing the arbitrage opportunity themselves and frontrunning.

I can imagine myself being in that position, having made the decision to go ahead fractional and try to pay people back, and then every day being in a slightly worse and worse position, incrementally.  Psychologically, it's hard draw the line once you're already in it, which is why pro traders determine their exit before they open their position.  Mark was probably struggling with not wanting to let down the community/customers, not wanting to hurt Bitcoin, not wanting lose his business, not wanting to go to prison.  If he'd been able to continue, all of those problems would be solved.  I'm sure the guy has been living with a lot of stress for the past few years.  While I'm on the topic, I should mention that personally, I'm not an ends-justify-the-means kind of guy.  If Kraken is ever insolvent, you will know immediately and we will all deal with the consequences together in a transparent and open manner.

Joint Statement Regarding Mt. Gox
14  Economy / Service Announcements / Joint Statement Regarding Mt. Gox on: February 25, 2014, 03:29:57 AM
For immediate distribution: February 24th, 2014 -- 7:00 PM PST

The purpose of this document is to summarize a joint statement to the Bitcoin community regarding Mt.Gox.

This tragic violation of the trust of users of Mt.Gox was the result of one company’s abhorrent actions and does not reflect the resilience or value of bitcoin and the digital currency industry. There are hundreds of trustworthy and responsible companies involved in bitcoin. These companies will continue to build the future of money by making bitcoin more secure and easy to use for consumers and merchants. As with any new industry, there are certain bad actors that need to be weeded out, and that is what we are seeing today.

We are confident, however, that strong Bitcoin companies, led by highly competent teams and backed by credible investors, will continue to thrive, and to fulfill the promise that bitcoin offers as the future of payment in the Internet age.

In order to re-establish the trust squandered by the failings of Mt. Gox, responsible bitcoin exchanges are working together and are committed to the future of bitcoin and the security of all customer funds. As part of the effort to re-assure customers, the following exchanges will be coordinating efforts over the coming days to publicly reassure customers and the general public that all funds continue to be held in a safe and secure manner: Coinbase, Kraken, BitStamp, Circle, and BTC China.

We strongly believe in transparent, thoughtful, and comprehensive consumer protection measures. We pledge to lead the way.

Bitcoin operators, whether they be exchanges, wallet services or payment providers, play a critical custodial role over the bitcoin they hold as assets for their customers. Acting as a custodian should require a high-bar, including appropriate security safeguards that are independently audited and tested on a regular basis, adequate balance sheets and reserves as commercial entities, transparent and accountable customer disclosures, and clear policies to not use customer assets for proprietary trading or for margin loans in leveraged trading. It does not appear to any of us that MtGox followed any these essential requirements as a financial services provider.

The following industry leaders stand by this statement:

Fred Ehrsam — Co-founder of Coinbase
Jesse Powell — CEO of Kraken
Nejc Kodrič — CEO of Bitstamp.net
Bobby Lee — CEO of BTC China
Nicolas Cary — CEO of Blockchain.info
Jeremy Allaire — CEO of Circle

USD Deposits Temporarily Disabled

Unfortunately, we've reached the limit of our US bank's capacity to deal with the volume on our account. Many USD withdrawals have been delayed beyond a limit we can accept, and it reflects poorly on our service. Rather than continue to disappoint, we've decided to suspend USD deposits until a more robust banking partner is acquired. In the meantime, USD withdrawals and trading will continue to be available, though we strongly encourage USD traders to shift to our EUR pairs. Most major banks will allow you to send EUR even if your account only holds USD.

All pending USD withdrawals not already in transit will be canceled within 24 hours and users will have the funds available again.

In order to lighten the burden on USD withdrawals and speed up the process, we're offering a 2% bonus for users willing to convert their USD balances to EUR balances. You may then trade EUR or withdraw EUR. EUR withdrawals are generally processed within 1 business day. If your bank only supports USD, withdrawing EUR to it will likely result in a < 1% conversion fee. Please contact us for details.

If you still wish to receive your USD withdrawal, please resubmit it.

Personally, I want to apologize for the long delays some of you have experienced with your USD withdrawals. I know how important it is to have your money when you need it and we've failed to provide timely service. I have been pleased with our banking partner for EUR, and the level of service we've been able to provide there. I appreciate your patience while we navigate the treacherous waters of the legacy banking system. The weather is nice in San Francisco but I'm glad you're not picketing outside our office Smiley

Hello,

Just pushed a little update which removes MtGox from the website, this is a follow-up to their infamous press release.
Instead, Coinorama now shows Kraken exchange.

This update also brings enhancements to bandwidth usage and paves the way to the next major update Smiley

Don't forget to refresh the page in your web browser in order to flush its cache.

This is awesome.  Thanks for putting us up!  I hope you'll support EUR pairs soon, where we'll be able to contribute more meaningful data.  Our USD volume is pretty tiny, unfortunately.
