Hi all!

We are excited to share some progress with you!

After an extended communication hiatus (for which we apologize -- there is only so often we can say that we are working in the background, albeit slowly), we are preparing to roll out the results that we have done over the last year and announce the next steps in our plan for continued development and community support.

It has taken some time to solidify a plan moving forward, but we have managed to put an excellent team together to take this project to the next level. As we all worked full-time jobs over the last year, it was a challenge to allocate time and resources to drive the necessary momentum from the beginning. However, with the reality of several team members stepping down from their full time commitments and committing to Eclipse full time, we know that we can turn our plans into a reality.

We have updated the OP where you will find new details on Eclipse development that highlight some of the necessary changes that we hope will not only build confidence in our new structure but also in our team and the future of Eclipse.

We are sure that many of you have questions. We will be available here but also more readily available on our Slack channel https://eclipsecrypto.slack.com and we encourage everyone to join to stay up to date on progress moving forward. Get yourself an invite at https://eclipsecrypto.herokuapp.com.

We are looking forward to welcoming you!

We are excited to have a clear path forward and and appreciate any feedback from the community.
Stay tuned during the next few days. More to come!

The all new Eclipse OP

Ring signatures are the basis of all the anonymous features of Eclipse. Ring signatures obsfucate the originator of a message
so that the only mathematical proof that can be attained is that 1 person out of N people is the original writer of a given message.
The message can take the form of proposing a new rule, donating tokens, transferring property, or leaking confidential material.

By design, ring signatures require the computation of a value known as a „key image“. Key images in Eclipse are generated using
an algorithm known as „Try-and-Increment“, a cryptographically secure method for mapping a scalar hash to a point on the elliptic curve.
The security of Try-and-Increment comes from the fact that this method does not rely on the group generator (i.e. basepoint) of the elliptic curve.

The inclusion of our implementation of Try-and-Increment, based on the algorithm proposed in How to Hash into Elliptic Curves, is our only
modification to the optimized libsecp256k1 library that is used in libbitcoincore.

Blockchains that are forks of ByteCoin, the original CryptoNote token, use Ed25519 (see: High-speed high-security signatures),
an elliptic curve in a Twisted Edwards form, for their digital signatures. Ed25519 is birationally equivalent to Curve25519,
an elliptic curve in Montgomery form, originally studied by D.J. Bernstein in Curve25519: new Diffie-Hellman speed records.

Unfortunately, one cannot be entirely certain if the parameters that were used for Curve25519 (and the subsequently derived parameters for Ed25519)
were chosen in such a way to allow a backdoor by the NIST (which has been known to happen with SECP256R1 due to the Snowden revelations)
due to choosing the restrictive parameter space a posteriori after a suitably (insecure) curve had been constructed.

It is our opinion that neither the security of this curve nor the integrity of Bernstein is up for debate. However, SECP256K1, a Koblitz curve,
had parameters chosen by a community of cryptographers as opposed to one cryptographer; it is our opinion that one researcher could be a
malicious actor easier than multiple researchers acting in a Byzantine manner.

We decided to use the SECP256K1 elliptic curve for Eclipse due to its parameters being chosen publicly in a way to achieve fast arithmetic
operations and its long-standing usage with blockchains.

Our Team is dedicated to the long-term success of Eclipse Crypto.

However, ‘long-term success’ are mere words unless we back them up with action. We have decided to impose a restriction to the access
of 1.4 Million EC of our Development Fund wallet using the CheckLockTimeVerify (CLTV) operation. Using this built-in script functionality,
we made it so that 1/40 of the tokens that are in control of the Founding Team will become available at the beginning of every quarter
for the next 10 years.

This action effectively reduces the supply by 40% and gradually increases the access to the coins over the next decade.
We are the first cryptocurrency development team to combine these features to create a long-term funding model.

We believe that by doing this, we demonstrate our commitment to the development of Eclipse Crypto, not with words, but with recorded,
transparent, and provable actions that can be queried on the blockchain.
In addition, the coins that are locked away for the next 10 years will not be staking.

The Development Fund will be paid quarterly over 10 years:

· 1 part for each of the 6 Team Members (to pay for continued development and code maintenance)
· 1 part for bounties, marketing, and promotional events / community prizes

The remaining 89770 Eclipse from the developers’ public address build the Eclipse Marketing & Development Fund which can be found here:
Eco2cHFa6TvTDFhUpdQVvRbMvsajg1ox8A

The 1.4 Million Eclipse will be locked using CLTV for the forementioned purpose and can be found here (non staking) :

1. Anonymous Proposals

You, along with Alice, Bob, Charlie, and Dianna, belong to an organization that creates rules that determine how everyone
behave towards one another. You want to propose a rule that benefits yourself, Bob, and Dianna.

However, you have a strong working relationship with Alice and Charlie and don’t want them to find out that you proposed
a new law that doesn’t benefit them. With ring signatures, you can hide the fact that you were the one who suggested this new rule.

2. Anonymous Donations

You support an organization that is run by Alice and Bob. Eve is collecting information for Gordon to know who supports and donates
to Alice and Bob’s organization. You can donate to Alice and Bob’s organization without Eve finding out and telling Gordon
with the use of ring signatures.

You support Alice for a particular political office. However, you are not able to donate more than a certain amount to her campaign
due to individual contribution limits. With ring signatures, you can avoid these rules by hiding the fact that you are the person donating
to Alice’s campaign.

3. Anonymous Money Transfers

You are working in China and make more than $50,000 worth of Yuan in a year. You are afraid that China’s central bank may decide
to debase their currency even further, rendering your current holdings in the Yuan worth less. You recently read the news how the
Chinese government is trying to stop people from transfering more money out of China than they are allowed using Bitcoin.

Eclipse, with its implementation of ring signatures for anonymous money transfers, allows you to circumvent China’s currency exportation
laws and anonymously transfer more money out of the country than you are allowed by law.

4. Anonymous Property Transfers

You possess a digital token that represents ownership of some type of property. You can anonymously transfer your property,
and the underlying token that represents ownership, to someone else using ring signatures.

5. Anonymous Whistle Blowing

You work for an organization that is performing actions that you believe are unjust. However, you fear for your life if you speak
out and tell others about these unfair practices.

With the help of ring signatures, you can be an anonymous whistleblower and bring to light the activities with which
you do not agree.

2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: August 16, 2016, 06:32:49 AM
I write this post to address a quote within the Coin Telegraph story "Legitimacy of Crytpoassets or App Coins, Their Real World Value" by Joseph Young (https://cointelegraph.com/news/legitimacy-of-cryptoassets-or-app-coins-their-real-world-value).

Within the article, this quote is misattributed to bitcointalk user cryptohunter. This quote is actually mine, posted as user Eclipse Crypto, and quoted in its entirety at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1410943.msg14404632#msg14404632. I am not the only Eclipse Crypto dev. I simply happened to be logged into the developer account when I started mining Steem, and never logged out, much to the eventual dismay of other developers on the Eclipse project. I deleted the original quote at the request of the Steem developers, although I knew copies persisted as quotes by other users.

The reason I deleted the original post from which Coin Telegraph took this quote is that I eventually felt that the rant was unfair. First, being used to so many launch shenanigans from other coins, I, like most other miners, am quick to throw around the word "scam". Given that Steem has been good for early miners and early exchange buyers, this label does not fit. The developers are still around, fully support Steem, and do very little selling of their coins from early mining, relatively speaking. Any selling that they do seems reasonable, given the scope of the Steem project and the size of the Steem markets on Bittrex and Poloniex. Additionally, the Steem developers have created and fully support the steemit.com website. Moreover, they have fully compensated users who lost funds during a limited site compromise in July. In short, no coin that has the benefit of support from a such an experienced and dedicated team could be a "scam". Time reveals whether projects fit this label, and I believe, along with many other users, that the label does not fit Steem.

My quote also claims the developers gave poor mining instructions. This was indeed the case for the original launch. Most of the instructions were accurate, but one in particular was not. It had to do with the format for the account name when issuing the mining command. Although explaining their error would require getting into the minutiae of JSON and command line parsers, this error turned out to be an honest mistake. Indeed, this mistake was corrected in the instructions for relaunch, and many clarifying instructions were added, making it less difficult (though not easy per se) for those who mined the relaunch.

Finally, as explained to me by the developers, the approximately 100 different accounts were required because their plan was to dominate the mining pool. Their intent was not to hide their mining presence, but to have enough accounts to accommodate their large hashing power. Steem uses a queued miner system, and each account may exist in the queue only as a single instance. Because the mining queue is generally about 100 in length, the 100 different addresses were reasonable to fully prevent wasted hashes. Several users, including myself, complained about the numerous accounts for the first launch. In response, the development team used very generic names, like steemit01, steemit02, etc., for the re-launch so that the team would not squat on good account names, many of which I claimed during subsequent mining.

In closing, I hope this puts the quote in context and clears up any misconceptions that reproducing it could propagate.

maybe.... if devs continue to support EC...

We aren't going anywhere.  You'll see.   Grin

same thing as every other scam coin... dev just keeps posting "you will see! wait a bit more!"  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

And what is it you are doing to help?

I think you have a great idea here and am interested in being a witness, so I'm going to lay down my creds.

First of all, the Eclipse Crypto account is a join developer account. I originally used it to post in this thread because I was logged in as this account and forgot to log out. I thought it would be a one-off post but then it kind of exploded. The other Eclipse developers have been *very* understanding, and my apparent lunacy here is in no way a reflection of the Eclipse team.

From now on, I'll post in this thread as "Bubba-Gump".
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][STEEM][POW] - NO IPO | NO PREMINE | NO INSTAMINE (relaunch) on: April 03, 2016, 07:20:23 PM
If it is not a scam for the devs to be pulling a xcoin/dark kind of captive instamine then explain clearly why it is not a scam to be doing so.

Disclosure: i mined both before and after the relaunch. I have a small chunk converted to VESTS now.

The only reason I consider this less of a scam is that the developer was up front about it being information-restricted and manipulated by him for his benefit from the very beginning. There was no "fair launch" in the sense of making everything available to everyone easily at the very same time, but there was also no pretense of a fair launch.

if you go back to the original pre-relaunch thread, the post was very clear about it being explicitly "unfair":

Quote
Complaints

There are many common complaints/conspiracies about STEEM that we want to address up front:

1. We know that our announcement could be vague and create a barrier to entry for those who cannot code
2. We have mined the vast majority of blocks thus far and we do not attempt to hide it
3. We have mined using forum names so that we can give those names to their rightful owners
4. We have mined to register accounts with popular boy and girl names because they might have extra value some day
5. We know that many here may chose to avoid or not mine STEEM simply because of how it was launched, that is your choice.

If you do not like how STEEM was launched please move on.

I tend to agree with Eclipse Crypto that he probably did get screwed, and the reason he got screwed is he treated it as something vaguely like a fair launch where he could go and mine a lot of coins and get away with it. By contrast, although I also have access to essentially-infinite mining power, I recognized that this coin was set up as unfair from the start, and if one wants to participate at all, one is better off doing so as a minority partner and not directly challenging the developer.

Hi,

I'm trying to build QT wallet on my ubuntu but failed:

Code:
src/init.h:10:21: fatal error: eclipse.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
Makefile:1312: recipe for target 'build/smessage.o' failed
make: *** [build/smessage.o] Error 1

where I can find that file?

Did you run autogen.sh then configure?

You need to have automake and autoconf installed.

can you create slack channel for your users?and pow phase was end?

Yes, PoW has ended and Eclipse is currently PoS only.

When the time is appropriate, we will create a Slack channel.   Cheesy

The part I am still not figuring out is how to know what goes in the WIFPRIVATEKEY field.

I just need a little more help please.

https://www.bitaddress.org

Go there, make a wallet, copy the secret (starts with L), then go to wallet details, paste in the secret, hit "view details", scroll down, copy the WIF address that starts with a 5.
16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][STEEM][POW] - NO IPO | NO PREMINE | NO INSTAMINE (relaunch) on: March 26, 2016, 09:19:07 PM
For those who are doing the math, this means we have mined 75% of the STEEM held by current accounts.
For those who are worried about us dumping, we intend to convert it all to VESTS at the end of the week.
VESTS are locked up, non-transverable, non-divisible, STEEM that can only be unlocked via 104 equal weekly payments (2 years).

We recommend everyone convert their STEEM to VESTS.

If this is just HODL plastered on top of bitshares, you are in for a surprise. Bittrex doesn't even think HODL is worth listing.

You are going to need more than just HODL-style "vests".
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][STEEM][POW] - NO IPO | NO PREMINE | NO INSTAMINE (relaunch) on: March 24, 2016, 07:35:00 PM
If you are having errors on the CLI then I recommend editing datadir/config.ini

The default generated on should provide a template.

Names starting with n, t, and f are being flagged by the JSON parser "null", "true", and "false".

If you don't use quotes then those names will fail.

All of this is backwards steemd will not run with any names that are started with a letter other than n, t, or f. Otherwise, it is needed to be started with a number. Why is it working the opposite of what you say?

You are doing it wrong. Don't use a number.

The dev's instructions are wrong.

Use this:

Code:
witness='"yourname"'

The json parser is looking for quotes, so you have to single-quote them in the shell. Make sure you single quote the miner array too, but don't single quote the seed node.

Code:
--miner='["yourname","5........."]'

Code:
--seed-node="52.38.66.234:2001"

2. 100%+ interest for a pow coin is not sustainable, there is a reason bitcoin halves every 4 years

With respect to wasting money, we lose more in dev time than any hash power.
You are entitled to your opinions on inflation

You already overflowed one integer with this coin. What's going to happen to an int64_t after 12 years of doubling?
19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][STEEM][POW] - An experimental Proof of Work blockchain on: March 24, 2016, 03:19:34 PM
Not doing anything to hurt anyone on purpose.

Then you are just careless.

You need more than 30 minutes of lead time.
20  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][STEEM][POW] - An experimental Proof of Work blockchain on: March 24, 2016, 03:07:15 PM
I have good news and bad news...

bad news: we have identified an integer overflow bug in the POW scheduling that only shows up when difficulty got high (thus didn't show up on our tests).
good news: we have decided to relaunch the chain with the fix and in a way that will hopefully make more people happy

On the relaunch we will do the following:

1. Start a new Thread
2. Give 30 minutes notice ahead of the start of mining
3. Not squat on any names

If there are any other requests for the relaunch we will consider them now.

Like we said from the beginning this is experimental / unproven consensus and beta software.

My first suggestion is not to relaunch. This coin has been bullshit and you are just making it worse. It seems like you want to relaunch because others have been finding blocks besides you.

Hard fork it like an adult. Relaunches will make you lose any support you are gaining.

1. If it's unproven, don't rent $200/day of hashes because you are not only wasting your money but others as well
2. 100%+ interest for a pow coin is not sustainable, there is a reason bitcoin halves every 4 years
3. 30 minutes is not enough time because people will be sleeping
4. make the announcement in this thread so you don't fuck over people who have been following early
5. basically don't do a lot of things to fuck over people on purpose

Yeah it's your coin, but your approach has been juvenile. You think this relaunch is responsible, but in fact it's just a symptom of how you operate.

If you want others to help, quit fucking with us and be grown-up about it. Don't piss off the people you want to help you.
