101  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [OPEN][PRICE DROP] - DRILLBIT SYSTEM Bitfury Miners on: October 10, 2013, 03:46:35 PM
Hello people.

I'm very pleased to announce a price drop on all Drillbit System hardware for Batch 2  Grin Grin

Drillbit Thumb -            0.8 BTC
Drillbit 8 Board -           2.5 BTC
Drillbit Miniplane -         0.3 BTC
Drillbit Double Scroll -    0.3 BTC

You'll see I've changed the front page quite a bit. Much that was on there is no longer relevant. For now payments will only be accepted in BTC. I think most of you know the deal with PAYPAL. We may reinstate the third party paypal option, but for now i'd rather keep it to Bitcoin, after all, that's why we're all here right? If anyone is desperate to pay with Paypal or Bank Transfer, PM me, it's possible, but please, go get some BTC.

If we get all these miners bought up quick, batch 2 should not be far behind batch 1.

Cheers

Barntech

I'm sure all of what I'm about to ask is located somewhere in the 61 pages of this thread, but...

What's your delivery schedule for batch #1? Just trying to estimate how "far" behind batch #2 would be
Looks like a ATX adapter to the backplane, is that correct?

Delivery schedule is still looking good for late Oct / early Nov. Batch 2 shouldn't be very far behind batch 1, and potentially even ship at the same time if all goes well. I'm currently making efforts to ensure that we can do both batches together.

will a rasp pi be able to mine with these?

Yes you can use a raspberry pi with cgminer to run these. Also, good news is that we've been working with Kano and Con from cgminer and the new cgminer update has full bitfury support. This will include our boards.  Grin

does make me twitch to not stand too close to whatever pool you as a person decide to over take.

The one thought I haven't thought to though while on the subject of chips . Are the chips on the assembled boards potentialy upgradable?
Who knows, I mean if Bitfury decide to release a 2nd gen chip, say 28nm, they might choose a different chip package like BFL have done for their 28nm 2nd gen chip. I like the current small packages that don't need expensive heat sinks. although you need way more off them to get the same GH/s. the trade off is you end up having a much higher component count on each board, but the board is not covered by a massive heat sink assembly, and you can produce a single chips USB powered device.

This is possible but it will really depend on the deign of the chips. In most likelihood, they will have different specs and require different circuitry. Generally speaking its going to be better to design new boards for new chips to ensure that the design is optimal.

Yall can thank me for buying 2/3rds of the reel so barn can get the chips ASAP and much cheaper.

Yes massive thanks to Bobsag for helping make this possible!  Grin

Happy to do either. Let me know what you would like to do.  Smiley

Barn,

Will those of us that paid for batch 1 via paypal be listed as paid in full (green) on the order queue soon? Is there anything else that needs to be completed as far as payment is concerned? I sent an email to your gmail account on this and just wanted to check here as well.

Thanks for your efforts!!!!

Why Bitfury would put their price up and then down again straight away (not that they have actually done this yet) is because no one is buying them. I honestly believe that no one would have bought a reel at $90,000. I'd be interested to know. Putting prices UP in the asic game is crazy. ASICminer are the perfect example of how to do it right. They have been constantly lowering their prices in accordance with the rising difficulty making their products continuously competitive, and they have kept selling, hell people are STILL buying their thumbs, which is quite remarkable. Essentially, this is the way things have to go in asic land if you want to keep selling your stuff.

Instead Bitfury went the other way. I think they probably fucked themselves over pretty hard with that move. It's a shame because it sort of stuffed us around too. There was a great momentum with this project, then they put the prices up crazy high so it was definitely not worth it and so in turn we had to stop, then they came back with their current prices, which is still much too high but at least potentially viable, but basically not many people have been jumping on batch two, because really its pretty expensive. If they hadn't done this i believe we'd be into batch 3 or 4 by now.

But hey, things are about to change. Thankfully the whole landscape is soon to be not so monopolized and the asic manufacturers are going to have to get the prices down to stay competitive with each other. Hopefully this will mean we can continue to make competitively priced miners for all of you moving into the future.

That's enough of a rant from me for now. Got some exciting news for you all real soon.  Grin

Barntech,

Any chance of adding the card dimensions and mounting hole sizes etc on the OP?

Sorry know you are uber busy.

Thanks

Dimensions: 102x102 for the 8 board (fits in a drive bay)
39x52 for the thumb, more or less. Its an odd shape so not the full rectangle.

Holes: 3.3mm hole size. sized to fit standard M3 screws

when is b2 ready to ship? Its a shame prices went up... at $425 & current BTC price...these things will never ROI =/

Working on a price drop. Seeing what we can do. Stay tuned

Can someone just make it easy on me and tell me exactly what to buy for a miniplane and 4 boards?  I do plan on cooling and overclocking (if possible).  Grin

I do currently have an extra Corsair CX600M if that will work...

Barntech, this is why I liked your forum!  We could have different threads for different topics.  Maybe this thread could be used for updates and getting more people on board (no pun intended) and your forum could be used to dig into these sub-topics (power, cooling, overclocking, setup, etc.)?

I think this is a good idea actually. Why don't we do that; continue PSU, cooling, heatsink, bitcoin apocalype/revolution tec discussion over at the forum and keep this one clear for getting more people 'on board'  Cheesy ... I'm not too fussed, but i did like the way individual discussion could be started over there. Please feel free to keep using it everyone.

Yeah but as far as I know I bought my boards into batch 1 and might have accidentally paid batch 2 rates. I'm waiting for Bartech to respond to my pm.

That looks pretty good actually. 5V 40A should give you a nice overhead.

Once we have exact numbers, i'll post them here.

confussion about shipping

i was quoted last week by barntech express shipping $115
now i get an email from jesse quoting express shipping for $170
and standard shipping for $130

what the hell is going on here

Hey Guyver.

Just sent you a PM. I am happy to honour any previous quote that i made. I think the issue is that previously we weren't including the double scroll in the quote and having it there tipped it over into the next bracket. Anyway, check the message and i'm sure we can work it out.

This auction is still going ahead

There is no minimum price

Current highest bid is 101BTC

Auction finishes 11.59.59 AM GMT ie. in about 30h 30mins

Great. Thanks for your response.

Thinking it might be good to have a countdown. Let me know if this one is accurate:

Timer removed. End time: 2013-10-09+11:59:59GMT

Quote from: punin on October 08, 2013, 05:30:28 AM + 30 hrs 30 min = 11:59 AM about 11 hours from now.

Punin can you please confirm.

Hey guys.

I set up an alternate backup forum here http://drillbitsystem.com/forum to continue communicating with everyo9ne from my group buy. It had all the same funtionality as this one and actually worked and looked better. I kind of liked it more to be honest. It was nice to continue discussion and great to have the ability for people to create sub forums to discussion particular thing.

In the strange times of the silkroad going down and various different branches of the bitcoin universe being attack it was great to still have contact with this online community. I realised what a big hole was left but this forum going down. I spend so long on here each day and thoroughly enjoy the discussion that arise, not only about bitcoin, but about life, the universe and everything.

Glad to hear that you guys also found other ways to stay connected. As you say, people always find a way to adapt. All that said... it's nice to have the mother forum back.  Wink

BTC would be nicer as it can be proved, but we do accept wire transfer also.

Ok good to know

What is the point of taking "sealed bids" by PM if you are going to make the best bid public knowledge?
Surely it is one or the other  Sad

cheers,
kev

All bids are public knowledge, as are all bitcoin transactions ever.

Hey all.

Ok, i'll port over any bits of crucial information that happened over on the other forum so that everything is updated here.

Regarding the two questions above. The double scroll is a hub into which you can plug two miniplanes, with this you will only need one ATX power supply and one USB connector to run 8 boards. So yes, the ATX connector powers the boards, no need for plugging in individual power to each board. The power for the boards is 5V. Effectively this means 8 boards becomes one miner. Without the double scroll, 8 boards is two miners. Yes i guess you could get someone in China to make a power splitter for you but i can't really comment on this and don't specifically recommend it, but by all means, if you can get that done, go for it.

Will bring across other updates soon.

Barntech

Are the miniplanes and doublescrolls pulling power from the 12v rail and supplying the 5v power needed for each board?  If so all of my questions are answered and we are golden.  heh..

The problem I'm worried about is if the miniplanes and doublescrolls are pulling power exclusively from the 5v rail.  We are going to run into some power issues if that is the case.

Thanks!

Chad

The power will be coming purely from the 5v. Adding covertors to step from 12v to 5v is also possible. Something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/270863166827?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Should be plenty for a full miniplane, potentially enough for a double scroll too, though you may need up to 50A for that. I've asked Dan our main hardware guy to send me through some real solid details on the power sitch and i'll post them here once i have them.

I just posted this over on the other forum:

The power for the 8 board is 25-30W. The full miniplane is ~100-120W. The full double scroll is about 250W or thereabouts, about the 5V section of a standard 500-600W power supply. If only running one miniplane, almost any small computer PSU should handle it. Id put it at about 5V, 25A for a miniplane. 450W is the cheapo power supply that can be gotten anywhere, this should be OK as long as the 5V does 25A or more.

Dan is saying that any mid sized power supply with an ATX should do the job.

Hope that helps. I'll post more as soon as i know.

Barntech

Here is a bit more power information for you:

All the 5V pins are connected in the ATX. Standard ATX24 pin layout. Recommended to connect to all 5V pins to support the current.
All grouund pins in the ATX connector are connected. Recommended to use all ground pins to connect.
Estimated that each 8 board will consume up to 5A max, unconfirmed. Will need to test with hashing.
Using a 5V 25A power per miniplane you should be good but need to test the hashing first.
Running at lower hash rate will reduce the power consumption.
Any stable regulated 5V supply should be OK. So its OK to have a converter going from the 12V from an ATX to make 5V for the boards.
