101  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My reasons for buying Bitcoins on: June 09, 2011, 04:06:47 PM
THe only reason (well there's two) that I'm not buying bitcoins right now is my wife thinks it's stupid (and it's half her money), and because I don't have enough time to watch the markets Sad   So I can only slowly mine them and hope over the course of time before the bubble bursts I have enough to pay off my mortgage, then I'll do so and show my wife how awesome they are, and hope she'll change her ways.

Until then, it's just a minor hobby Sad

I kid I kid. Grin

Don't you get it? we aren't going to "cash out." ever. Bitcoin is money. we're cashing out of FRNs.

It is this attitude which will allow bitcoin to become the success we are dreaming of!

Yes, yes it is.

Massive Shout Out to the Fundamentalists.

106  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Senator Charles Schumer Pushes to Shut Down Online Drug Marketplace on: June 08, 2011, 10:43:13 AM
I got off of the phone with Senator Jim DeMint's(R SC) DC office, a short while ago.

While I didn't speak to the Senator, I talked to a member of his staff that was: already aware of Bitcoin and how it works, has visited this forum, and was aware of Gavin's coming trip to the CIA. He agreed that this is an interesting technology with market potential.

The conversation was brief and politic, but my overall impression was a positive one.

Have the politically-correct co-opted the Forum lately? When will people realize that it doesn't matter what government thinks about a 'crypto math puzzle'.  Nor , does it matter if they like it or support it.  It doesn't even matter if the population likes bitcoin. I don't like US Dollars and the promise-of-a-promise Euro currency, but I still accept them.

Politically-correct? What on earth has political correctness got to do with any of this  Huh

I bet you don't have a wife or kids.  Maybe not even a girlfriend to support.  My finance would kill me if I went all into bitcoins.  You are in a good spot...good luck to you!  Grin

lol. Freudian slip.

You should try leading the last sentence in the text he quoted.
Sites like Silk Road are going to make governments stop Bitcoin from getting widespread use, so you have to choose between having sites like this and the success of Bitcoin. It's a simple cause and affect, and saying that he would prefer the success of Bitcoin over the availability of such sites doesn't mean he likes it. In fact he's just said he doesn't like it. You are shooting the messenger.

The nature of bitcoin itself means the choice of who gets to use it is no longer anybodies to make.

110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shift the decimal point over? on: June 07, 2011, 08:42:54 PM
I think it's time we had an option in the client about what denomination of bitcoin to display. The default as is, and then a clear and well-explained drop-list or something for lower denominations.

111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is beggining to get "bad" publicity... on: June 07, 2011, 10:00:45 AM
My point was that Nozick didn't defend libertarian ideas very well at all in my opinion. I suppose I didn't make that clear.

Shocked  Are you seriously trying to find fault with the late, great Robert Nozick on a bitcoin msg board completely full of info-anarchist and cyber-libertarian types?

OH NO YOU DIDN"T!!!

Nozick was a professional logician and philosopher.  His Ultimate Defense of Liberty (a book called Anarchy, State, and Utopia) won the Book of the Year award.  How many vastly-influential bestsellers have you put out.  My guess would be 'zero.'

How long have you been a tenured Harvard professor?  Oh that's right you don't even teach at the local podunk junior community college.

Yet, you disrespect the accomplishments of your superiors, via appeal to your own glorious Jesus-drenched personal opinion.  If you intended to persuade anyone besides yourself that your opinion is more than a gnat compared to Nozick's elephant, citing something besides your knee-jerk reaction would be advisable.

You keep name-checking Nozick and claiming to have understood his argument, while seeing through its fatal flaws with your monotheist death-god annointed vision.  But there's no reference to anything that Nozick wrote, only to his name and your amazing secret discovery of his hidden weaknesses.

And you wrap your inordinate self-regard in Christian superstitions, which you proudly display on your electronic sleeve.  How typical.

I've had enough of ignorant Fundy hicks insulting great men of mind such as Prof. Nozick.  It's time to push the personal criticism squarely back, onto both the mouthy, semi-educated liberal polisci hacks and the blue-nosed bumpkins who, while normally enemies, waste no time when uniting to disparate and attack brilliant thinkers like Nozick and libertarianism in general.

How often are you called upon to defend individual freedoms from hideous, terrible statist monsters like the incomprehensible John Rawls?  Probably never, because you're simply not up to the task.

"Anarchy, State, and Utopia" is one of the best books ever written.  That's why it's required reading for so many university classes (unlike anything you have or ever will have produced in your entire life).

With immense clarity and articulation, Nozick laid out and rigorously examines the case for the minimal night-watchman state with the practiced, orderly precision of a sushi chef.

Then he proceeds to gut, fillet, and serve both stinking anarchist and Holier-than-though do gooders, like the mating pair of poisonous pufferfish they are.

When you try to tear down a great historical figure like Nozick, who is so much more respected and beloved than you're entire family tree will ever be, using only negative feelings and emotional poo-pooing, it tells us far more about you than him.

I'd love to see you spend just ten minutes struggling as you try and read one his more technical books on the perennial mysteries, such as "Philosophical Explanations."

Your simplistic, fable-filled head would explode on contact which such a dense tome of critical thinking.  All you would know is that you can always one-up anyone by saying "Well I put God on top of that."

But whatever, not everyone is cut out to live "The Examined Life" of a philosopher.  That's why the superstitious version of religion (you know, the one that makes dumb asses feel qualified by mere Falwellian faaaaayyyyth to disregard anything beyond their limited comprehension as 'unconvincing') is so popular.

Lol Grin

You an me, we certainly don't agree about politics, but I did enjoy that^. Wink

very poorly constructed, not much effort put in really. though he has used a real suit, so... one out of ten for that.

Why he did not bothered with opiates farms in Afghanistan, that is under US control (if US did not lie about it, lol)  ?

Because he can't admit to such a thing while Chocolate Jesus is president.

Is it your intention to be racially offensive or what?

114  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The US dollar is the people's currency. Not Bitcoin! on: June 06, 2011, 08:54:02 PM
The FED is a cartel of private banks, it's as 'Federal' as Federal Express.

Besides, America can be described as a two party Corporate Republic (Industry versus Finance). Your idea that democracy plays an important role in the US domestic power structure is naive.
115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Senator Charles Schumer Pushes to Shut Down Online Drug Marketplace on: June 06, 2011, 08:05:52 PM
I propose we make a donation to the Senator. He's really gone all out to put bitcoin on the map to make sure that both law-ignorers and law-observers alike become more aware of bitcoin and it's simply not fair that such effort go unrewarded.

He stressed bitcoins qualities, it's strengths and security, its untraceability (although to be fair he should have stressed that you have to put some effort in for that). It's a good thing he done.

Well thanks to Senator Schumer, bitcoins speculative energy is about to be laced with a generous additional dose of material trade.

119  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Large German lobby organization supports ban on Bitcoins on: June 05, 2011, 11:59:59 PM
I think this is a good sign but its dangerous as the big cats are getting irritated by seeing the mice building complex unbreakable money networks.
I'm german and I'm a member of a political party called humanwirtschaftspartei what with its predecessor tried since nearly 100 years to fight against the actual money-system.They see the dysfunction of the actual moneysystem as the deeper cause of wars, crisis and impoverishment. As well our technological and social progress is far behind were we actually could be - The science-fiction stories of the 60's may be true today in another dimension of a working moneysystem.
Thanks to the Internet the people getting aware and they starting to break the money taboo as well.
If you still not really know how money and economics works because sure they  never let you learn this in school or university  than you can see and listen here a youtube lecture of a Professor of Economics
Deeper Roots of World Financial Crisis:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sqFpVJvSVs

Thanks for the link, very interesting lecture. I'm not sure if bitcoins deflationary nature would add to the parasitic consequences of financial speculation in drawing purchasing resources from the real economy, or if it in fact the effect would not be the same as deflation may keep prices and demand in the real economy relative to each other so that there is actually no loss of purchasing power or what. And even if it did perhaps the effect would be offset by the non-debt basis of bitcoin creation (and besides the interest paradigm may persist with bitcoin, I see people on this forum suggesting an interest system of borrowing bitcoin which to my mind misses the point of the technology entirely. But people have got to get money for new enterprises somehow, from where then if not by paying a bank to create it?).

Would be great to get the professors opinion on bitcoin.
