Was watching some videos about cryptos, right now Dash is coming with a bunch of new features which is cool but I think with time Nexus will do all that and but better, one of the reasons why i find Nexus so appealing is because its security, hybrid POW / nPOS mining, and future adoption of multi-threaded tech on its blockchain, but i was searching about Ethereum which is another big project, Could Nexus compete with Ethereum?, how secure is that blockchain?

I would definitely agree with you about what is appealing about Nexus.  I'm not particularly happy with the way Dash was instamined nor am I happy with the way that Dash achieves coin mixing and instant transactions.  It's a very creative and functional use of masternodes, but I believe having a financial barrier to entry for masternodes is the wrong approach.  We don't want to build a system just for the rich to profit from.  This is why we created the Trust nodes, so that nodes are rewarded for their time rather than the number of coins they hold.  In many ways, time is more valuable than money because you can never get time back, but you can always get money back.  Regardless, Evan Duffield is a creative developer with good skills, and likely made a small fortune in a short time from his coin.  It's so far proved very useful and successful, so hats off to him for his success in this area and for his diligence in maintaining the coin.

Ethereum is very interesting but is also perhaps the most overhyped project in the cryptosphere.  It remains to be seen whether or not a turing complete blockchain is necessary or even useful.  I don't think anyone has actually found a use case that really stands out for this.  Chances are that the Ethereum blockchain will be huge (as in size of data/chain) if it is ever used in the way it has been presented.  Looking at the Bitcoin arena, we see that decentralization is an important feature.  Ripple once branded itself that it would be decentralized, but once companies start getting into how these things will actually work, it appears that these blockchains will in fact be highly centralized server farms and data centers, which ultimately makes the entire blockchain pointless if it's only being ran on a few large datacenters.

I'm more bullish on technology like Factom for data solutions, which use the Bitcoin blockchain for auditing the Factom system in real-time.

What is the ultimate goal here? What is really the ultimate needs of humanity?  We need systems that are censorship resistant, decentralized, and free from government/political interference.  That's what makes Bitcoin interesting.  Without those things Bitcoin is just data-centralized P2P paypal and Ethereum is just a data-centralized P2P scripting language with a token.

Nexus is focusing mostly on ensuring the protocol can remain quantum secure and decentralized, with the long-term goal of creating a system which will be able to secure the Bitcoin blockchain in the event that SHA2 becomes vulnerable to quantum computers.  Nexus wants to take all of the properties that Bitcoin and Peercoin started, and improve upon them.

In addition, Nexus seeks to create governance structures for the community that comes to adopt this currency for its' own use.  Nexus seeks to improve trust systems and through the use of developer and recycler/ambassador channels, provide long-term funding and long-term sustainability for the protocol and the Nexusoft company that will be built around this protocol.

I do not speak for Videlicet or the community but this is a short reasons for why I am here.  Because Videlicet is probably one of the best coders in the blockchain industry, and I believe you will all come to realize this very soon.

I believe just keeping our wallets open for staking already helps secure the network, no?

Absolutely it helps secure the network Smiley

We are making progress although it is slow and we do wish it could be done quicker.  At the moment, Videlicet is the only developer contributing to the codebase but discussions are happening, code is being written, projects are being organized, people are coming onboard to help.

For quite some time, we've discussed changing the name of the currency token, known as the Niro. I recently bounced the idea of the "Linx" (like links in a chain, Nexus Linx) in our slack channel.  But it's just not quite right.  We want as much community input and participation as possible, so anyone's ideas are welcome.  Sometimes, these small details make a very big difference as marketing and branding are important.  What ideas do you guys have for alternative names for the network and/or token?  This is kind of an afterthought, as we are happy with Nexus Niro for the time being, but we want to make sure we stay on the forefront of marketing and development in this industry.  We remain open to as much community input and participation as possible.  We will continue playing the long-game.  As we have seen recently, many clone-based altcoins were effectively wiped out by the demise of Cryptsy, many of them scams that brought no innovation to Bitcoin.  Cryptsy was the lifeline for those coins.  This is not the case with Nexus.  We do have plans to bring in funding in the future and we believe there will be a synchronous time for this to happen.

So if you send me your trust key, make sure to send the most active one Wink
uh? how to know from the nexus command line client?

Good question, I would guess any pubkeys that have a Niro balance.  Maybe just PM your pubkeys to Videlicet

Thank you for the very helpful feedback.  I agree with you.  I will need to setup a recording device, I do have a good microphone and Videlicet has a good one as well.  I will set it up.

My question re Nexus:  what role can Nexus play in crypto world that seems will become dominated by etherum and it's closed source clones ?

Keep in mind we are building Nexus for the long-term.  This is a life long project for us now, we will maintain the network and have our own blockchain and build some amount of commerce around the the Nexus blockchain token, currently known as Niro.  As you can see from politics of Bitcoin, it's very hard to make big changes to a network protocol once a lot of users are using it and invested in it.  So, right now, we are building Nexus slowly but with much discussion and feedback from a small community.  Nexus is a super secure, super decentralized network protocol with a mechanism for continued development.  We are building the Nexus blockchain, we are building the real long-term strong community, and we are building a protocol for which we can develop applications.  Our plan is to eventually hire more coders.  We do plan to fund Nexus development, and the developer keys are what allow us to afford to do that.  We are already partnering with many people for different projects utilizing land and business.  It's all long-term, community usage.

what happened to him? i think we caught up once or twice on toketalk back in the day.

He suffered a series of heart attacks out of the blue.  He seemed perfectly healthy up until that point, I had spoken to him briefly just a week before.  He had a lot of people who loved him in his life.  Again, a remarkable man who touched many people.

It is a stern reminder that our lives on Earth are short and unpredictable, and we should cherish every moment we have with the people we love.

Whoops.  Sorry guys, I posted it a little too soon!

I didn't realize it was still work in progress Tongue

But good feedback so far anyways.  We definitely want to make the questions and answers engaging.  That's why we ask for your input.

Do you have any questions you would like answered?  Just list them and I will put them in my next list.

Thanks!

Hello guys,

I came here to pay some respect to my good friend Phil (rebphil).  He was a great human being and he loved crypto and cannabis.  He touched many lives and led a long and interesting computer science career!  He left his mark on Cannacoin and the community.

Cannacoin looks to be doing fantastic lately.  Glad to see the project is being maintained and updated by SubCreative and others!

Rest in Peace Phil!

So who controls the recycling addresses or is it done in some decentralized manner?

Recycler keys and developer keys are currently controlled by Videlicet.  We are going to discuss the ideas to decentralize these in a podcast, and we want feedback and help from the community.  I was hoping to have a podcast with Colin done this last Sunday discussing the future of Nexus and bringing new ideas to Bitcoin, but a snowstorm prevented me from getting home that day, and then I had to pack and move the following day.  Right now I'm on the road.

There are some very interesting developments going on which we hope to share with everyone soon.  Hopefully after the next podcast, we can clarify many things for everyone and give people a better sense of the vision of Nexus.  As soon as Colin and I can get this recorded, it will be posted here.  This is a priority for both of us but we are currently both swamped.  I should be able to devote a lot more time to Nexus and the podcasts in a few weeks.

Thank you

We are Nexus.

I'll jump in early with a suggestion regarding the recyclers though I am not a coder so I am unsure if it is at all practical or even possible. I suggest the recyclers be controlled via a voting mechanism using trust keys which are not associated with any of the recycler addresses. Not exactly sure how it could work but something along the lines of recycler addresses being multisig and some how requiring one of the inputs required to unlock them being generated from a vote by trust key holders.

That is right along the lines of what we are thinking.  We do envision those with Trust Keys to be voters.  This is why we are going to fix the Trust Key expiration in the next update.  Rather than an expiration, it will simply decay in weight.  So, that if your node goes offline for a few weeks, you may not completely lose your key but rather you will lose some weight that the key carries.

This is why I referred to the recycler keys as "delegate keys" or "ambassador keys" because those who control them will be ambassadors for Niro and also delegated power by voters.  The ambassadors could have voting capabilities for example, to appoint the developer keys, among other powers and benefits.

Perhaps some of our early community such as yourselves will become controllers/ambassadors of these keys.  In fact, we see this as a big incentive to our early community members.  Participants such as CestBallot, BitSlapper  would be prime examples of people who could be rewarded recycler and/or developer keys.  It is possible someone could have both a recycler key and a developer key

We would also like to decentralize the developer keys over time as well, but this is a different subject as right now Videlicet and CestBallot are the primary developers and maintainers of the Nexus infrastructure.

Let's tackle the recycler/ambassador keys first.

Also, if anyone has a better name for these keys, we would like to hear it.  These keys ultimately will provide businesses with incentive to maintain crucial infrastructure related to Nexus in the future and become part of a "governing system" so as to ensure long-term decentralization but also maintenance of the infrastructure.  It's feasible these keys could even be put into multisig accounts where they are controlled by trusts or individual communities, whereupon each community had a recycler key.

Dear friends and Nexus family,

I do apologize for the lack of communication lately!

Colin and myself will be producing a weekly podcast for everyone.  These podcasts will serve two functions, to keep the community informed on what Nexus is developing into, and to also educate the Bitcoin community on the technological innovations which Nexus seeks to bring to Bitcoin.

Nexus is a protocol and a blockchain innovation organization and community.  Recycler and development keys and their corresponding Niro balances, are public.  Recently, Colin and I discussed how we will proceed with handling these keys. What we determined, is that these keys allow for a mechanism for decentralized governance.  There are 13 developer keys, and 13 recycler keys.  Therefore, these keys can act as a balance of power within the network.  Just as Bitcoin is a decentralized money protocol and OpenBazaar is a decentralized marketplace protocol, we are moving Nexus towards being a decentralized governance protocol.  The recycler keys could also be referred to as "delegate keys" or "ambassador keys" because they can be revoked and re-assigned by voters.   These keys will be delegated out initially to valuable participants in the Nexus platform and their holders will be accountable to voters.

Voters are those who hold "Trust Keys" and the more Trust a person has on the network, the more weight their vote carries.

The distribution of developer and ambassador keys will be transparent and involve heavy community participation.  The complete distribution of all keys could take years or decades, so these keys have no bearing on the short term.

A fully developed trust key and trust node network lays the foundation for the future so that participants in the community today have the opportunity to develop trust and obtain Trust Keys which will be very valuable in the future.

We would like to hear feedback from the community about this idea.

We will record the first podcast tomorrow (Sunday).

We would love to have more information about where those announced partnerships stand at this point.  Also, if agreeing to do "something" is an easy business development step to take, why hasn't it happened since the token sale?

We will be updating the community on these projects as they progress.  We have some very cool projects that are starting up.   As to why actual work takes longer than agreeing to do work, well, it is the nature of the real world.  Factom went live in September, and we have been working hard towards upgrades of the protocol as well as a number of projects.  Some of those projects were waiting for the protocol, and some simply need time to design and gain agreement.   And some may be abandoned, or modified so much as to not resemble much the original thought.

Sounds good.  Looking forward to seeing you guys get all "disruptive" and stuff. Wink

Well the wallet.dat is pretty useless right now due to its algorithms, gets very slow and stores transactions along with keys, so keeping your private key(s) is the safest bet. I'm working on rebuilding it since I am unhappy with its current performance / stability. Also working to integrate trust keys into the mining network. This will resolve some issues we've been seeing.

On another Note, I was just interviewed in a Podcast for Nexus. If you are interested in hearing it, check out this link:

The only good thing about coinbase is that they pay the TX fees <3

Coinbase's XT project is basically a bitcoin modified specifically to make them profit. And wasnt bitcoin supposed to be decentralised?

That seems pretty silly.  Profit would come by growing their userbase, not by trying to reduce their tx fee expenses which are probably extremely minimal.  They make profit through trading fees using their own internal off-blockchain transaction ledger.  People use their service because people trust them, they are integrated with multiple services such as Lawnmower and now USAA, they have insurance and FDIC on cash deposits, a multi-sig vault, and multi-layer 2FA (MFA).

I believe their support for BIP101 has more to do with their vision of Bitcoin being able to accommodate more transactions per second.  This improves the user experience of Bitcoin because more transactions can be fit into each block, thus speeding up confirmation times.

We are all on the same side here when it comes to Bitcoin, the question is how do we maintain decentralization without decreasing usability of Bitcoin.  As most have pointed out, if Bitcoin doesn't scale soon, there could be a catastrophic scenario where the price plummets, along with hashrates, and the ecosystem becomes so fragile that altcoins step in.

We all need to work together to ensure that Bitcoin is the clear winner and I hope Bitcoin Core devs can prove they have what it takes to bring the community together by working together to find consensus on controversial BIPs.

Bit annoyed...Hard drive nakered last night so rushed to sort one out knowing full well the block chain will take all day to sync and the 24 hour trust key would vanish. Have managed to sync the wallet well before the 24 hours yet when i start staking my trust key has vanished along with my interest rate!

This is a good point about having to resync from scratch.  Videlicet is working on improving the redundancy within the blockchain and give users more control over their trust keys.

Our next update will include an algorithm to re-activate expired trust keys retroactively, and we are changing the way they expire as well, rather than instantly expiring they will slowly decay.  Many people were frustrated with losing trust keys in the past, and we are working to improve this system.

Videlicet is focused on coding but we will relay your concerns to him.

Thanks for your support.

Has Theymos (the person who runs this forum) ever revealed any personal info about himself? Do we know his name, where he lives, etc? Is the real person behind the Theymos handle an active member of the community apart from on this forum and on reddit?

Gavin Andresen follows him on twitter.  One tweet.  Come on Michael, some more effort would be nice https://twitter.com/theymos
