101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 26, 2014, 06:32:07 AM

I would run an NXT show that focuses on the community, and am talking with a member of your community about developing that.

Whoa, am I hearing you right? Do you mean you would start an entire NEW show based on the Nxt community?? If so, wow!

I have requested a speaker able to speak about NXT to interview for the Let's Talk Bitcoin show

Has anyone been recommended to you yet for this interview?
102  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 26, 2014, 06:25:44 AM
I believe they already want to do a show on Nxt in the near future. Is this paid spot in addition to the guest speaker Adam requested?

Those things are free because you have an interesting project, and I genuinely want to keep up to date on it.  The NXT show will only be interesting to people who want to know about NXT, and the interview will only run on one episode of Let's Talk Bitcoin.  Sponsoring LTB as suggested for 6 months means our growing audience hears about NXT, in whatever light you want - I suggested having many spots talking about different features, or exciting updates - Things that make people want to learn more about NXT.

It should also be noted that we only run 2 minutes worth of sponsor content per hour so buying out a minute slot means half our inventory is occupied for that amount of time, and Anthony Di Iorio already bought out a 30s slot for a year starting in February.

Thanks for the clarification, and thanks for being so active on our thread! Looking forward to guest speaker interview!

I think a paid 30s spot on a few epidsodes of Lets Talk Bitcoin would be a good idea, especially if the spot is different on each episode, comes from one of our community members, and is used to introduce or highlight new features or developments in Nxt. It doesn't have to sound like an ad.

It's our hope that once you have researched our community and technology, you will join the movement and help us spread the word about Nxt.

This draft is better, but that particular sentence sounds ridiculously immature.

"Yeah, Jenny, call the NBA, tell them I can't make it tonight, I am gonna, uhm... research this community and, uhm... technology and then I am gonna, uhm... join The Movement and start twitting about it like crazy. Maybe order some billboards for them."

Smiley

Busy famous people like to know why they're being contacted and what we're hoping to get from them. This sentence shows that we want nothing more than his goodwill and perhaps a public endorsement. I.e. we aren't trying to get financial support from him, manipulate him, or call in favors at a later date. Maybe it could be reworded, but this message needs to be conveyed. I also wanted to indicate that we aren't naive enough to think he'll jump in without researching first. I'm sure he researches all his investments very carefully.

For anyone who's interested, I've updated my draft of the letter to Mark Cuban, replacing the sentence that so offended NxtChg with:

"We believe that if you are confident in the Nxt endeavor, others will follow your lead, thus furthering our goal of widespread adoption."

Again, this is not something we should send until we have a well-tested full-featured client. When we're ready, I have some thoughts on how to reach him.

Update 3 - Bitcoin Conference Miami

Just had lunch with one of the organizers for the Austin, Texas Bitcoin conference, Jeremy, on March 5-6. Just happened to meet him in the food line and asked if he would like to join me Smiley

http://texasbitcoinconference.com/

We spoke a bit about the conference and they are shooting to be the largest Bitcoin conference in history. I think we need to get a speaker lined up and get them to this conference. Having this contact should help us get our foot in the door and really spread the word about Nxt.

****Action Item****

If I could get the communities help in finding a speaker to represent us at this conference, I will make contact with Jeremy to see if we can get a spot.

Thanks again for everyone's help and will keep updating with more news as it happens!

I think joefox might be our most lucid speaker. He isn't one of the developers, but he understands a heck of a lot and knows just about everything that's going on. I think it would be better to have a gifted speaker like him who can communicate the vision in words everyone can understand than a talented developer who can answer all the toughest technical questions, but in a way that loses 90% of the listeners.

Update 4 - Bitcoin Conference Miami

I had a chance to speak to Paul over at Cryptsy. Paul seemed to be very familiar with Nxt and is interested in integrating. This is not a confirmation but as close a possible. I understand their concerns, we need our development team to help show them the way ASAP.

** Action **

We need to match up CfB with Paul to handle any technical issues. I have Paul's info, I will match up our development team to push this forward. Fantastic job to the community for making them well aware of who we are!

As a side note, talked to a LOT of people today about Nxt. There's a whisper about us at the conference, that's a fact.

Will add further updates later Smiley

Nifty your updates are exciting! Thanks!

I've made a few other edits to my draft letter. If you decide to use it, please copy from my original (updated) post.
109  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 25, 2014, 08:48:41 AM
One edit. I think the letter should start "Dear Mr. Cuban," instead of simply "Mark", which might be too familiar. I've edited my original post
110  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 25, 2014, 08:44:28 AM

This is much better.  Thanks bithic.

Np! I'm happy to help with any kind of writing/promotional material as long as I have the time!
111  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 25, 2014, 08:40:49 AM
Nxt doesn't even have mature client software (correct me if I am wrong). Don't present a half finished product to a big guy like Mark.

I agree. We should wait for a well-tested full-featured client before contacting him.
112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 25, 2014, 08:37:27 AM
Please correct/suggest if anything I said is inaccurate.

Also, I noticed that the first draft always had two spaces after a period. That convention is old, one space is the standard now.

I wasn't so sold on the first draft of the letter to Mark Cuban. Here is an alternative:

Dear Mr. Cuban,

You tweeted in November that you want to invest in the next generation of cryptocurencies. We are the users and developers of a brand new cryptocurrency called "Nxt:: descendant of Bitcoin", and we think you should know about it. Nxt uses brand new software. It isn't a fork of Bitcoin's source code. Nxt is the first 100% Proof-of-Stake (PoS) currency. This, together with some game-changing innovations built on top of it, gives it some major advantages, including:

- lightweight, highly scalable network, capable of eventually handling transaction volumes comparable to credit card networks
- planned support for near-instant, secure transactions, thanks to its "Transparent Forging"
- no risk of 51% attack
- the environmental issue of wasted electricity required to secure the network (and high mining expenses) is entirely resolved

Nxt is also leading the charge with many of the more commonly talked-about 2nd generation features, such as a decentralized asset exchange, "aliases", coloured coins, and more. Unlike other currencies with PoS mining, Nxt's PoS implementation does not cause monetary inflation. Coins are earned solely by charging transaction fees, and, due to the energy-efficient nature of the network, these transaction fees can be sustainably kept to a minimum. The total amount of NXT in circulation is 1 billion. Nxt improves different features of Bitcoin, removes some disadvantages and adds new features, some of which would be very difficult to implement on the Bitcoin network without a major re-write. For these reasons, along with our head-start in the "Nxt Generation" race, we think Nxt will distinguish itself in the coming months, and will eventually compete with Bitcoin itself.

We would like to give you a token 1000 NXT so you can participate in the Nxt big thing in cryptocurrency. We believe that if you are confident in the Nxt endeavor, others will follow your lead, thus furthering our goal of widespread adoption. Nxt is entirely community driven, is not backed by venture capital, and will always be decentralized in operation. Development is progressing very rapidly, thanks to its team of talented developers and fast-growing community.

You can read more about Nxt at NxtCrypto.org, wiki.NxtCrypto.org and forums.NxtCrypto.org.

You can download Nxt's software here (Link to NRS).

If you have questions please contact us at (contact).

Thank you,

The users and developers of the Nxt generation of cryptocurrency

Good point.

I meant easy as in effort, not money.
116  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 25, 2014, 06:33:09 AM
I'm not so sure giving him Nxt would be a good idea. Bill Still took a lot of heat for possibly receiving donations before he promoted Quark. I'd rather not risk the accusation of the Nxt community "bribing" him to promote Nxt. Just give him good information with no strings attached, and he'll appreciate the gesture.

perhaps this is wise

But then again, we want to make it easy for him to get Nxt. If he isn't already in bitcoin it could be difficult.

Go joefox! Btw, are you going to accept Adam's invitation to go on Lets Talk Bitcoin? I hope so!

This guy obviously isn't impressed with NXT.

In Depth Analysis of NXT  -  http://cryptolife.net/in-depth-analysis-nxt/

Regarding NXT addressing. "If you were to generate an offline address and send coins to that address, you do not have explicit ownership of that address. Someone could come along with a passphrase that has a collision with yours, announce his public key to the network, and then have explicit ownership over your coins. This means that to claim ownership over an address, you are forced to expose your public key to the network. As mentioned before, doing this decreases the overall security of that address. You just can’t win. NXT is inherently less secure that Bitcoin. It is a total step backwards in that department. Also worth mentioning is that Bitcoin addresses have a 4 byte checksum that prevents you from sending to an invalid or incorrect address. NXT addresses do not."

Does anyone have an answer for this?

He's partially right about lack of security of offline addresses. 64 bits are not enough. For example, 64 bit RC5 was broken more than 10 years ago, by bruteforce, by distributed.net. Cracking offline addresses is practically possible, although the payout from this is very unlikely to be positive, you would need a ton of special asics. It's way easier and cheaper to take control of bitcoin's network than it is to crack offline nxt address. So effectively even offline nxt addresses are more secure than bitcoins. Still, it's not cryptographically secure.
He's wrong about lack of security due to publicizing public key, it's secure, no need for paranoia there. Online addresses (with public key) are secure.
He's right about lack of checksum.

Little has been talked about the reason why BCNext went with 64 bit. When Nxt is accidentally sent to a random account # and is unrecoverable, its referred to as darkNxt.  This darkNxt has no use to anyone, and sits in an account that is inaccessible.  BCNext wanted to make it possible for powerful computers to be able to mine darkNxt in the future, so it was not lost forever, as all regular Nxt will be protected by 256bit private key accounts.

A proposal to implement a new address format that protects against sending to incorrect addresses is outlined here:
http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/New_Address_Format
