102  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New phishing Gox-related emails on: June 27, 2011, 03:39:23 AM
Just got this ...
 I really don't want to abandon this email address.
If you want to be on the safe side there is no other way.

The Gox email list ist out to the public and these addresses are valuable targets for any thief.

They only need to hack into your PC and have a good chance to find a nice wallet.dat and get your bitcoins.

Thus such attacks will never end.

Try to detach every used service from your old email, delete it and get a new one. The earlier the better.

103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has anyone gotten their Account Opened at MtGox? on: June 27, 2011, 03:23:33 AM
Certainly you saw that MtGox was able to produce 7,961 BTC turnover in the last three hours.

Obviously that's not possible with zero accounts open.

Creating the title 'Has anyone gotten their Account Opended' under such circumstances seems pure trolling to me.

So I dont believe what you are saying re your personal account.

Should your account really not been opened, please don't troll but present detailed info. Maybe someone can help you.
104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gox again? on: June 25, 2011, 03:20:19 PM
Where's the screenshot? Why have you waited 20 minutes to post it here?

Pics or it didnt happen

In the meantime I uploaded the screenshot
http://i52.tinypic.com/2cp25xx.png

updated my starting post accordingly
and saw it was a typo

I typed mtcox instead of mtgox

Sorry, but that can happpen

105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Gox again? on: June 25, 2011, 02:54:41 PM
Entering 'mtgox.com' into the adress line of my browser 20 min ago resulted in presenting a nice diagram of quote going up with the heading 'average monetary value of dick'.

I fear some hacker might have succeeded again to hack into Gox 'http'-server.

update:
Sorry I did a typo 'mtcox' instead of 'mtgox' - even though such typos can make you vulnerable for drive by attacks
____________

I did a screenshot. In the meantime that thing disappeared.

update: Upload of the screenshot http://i52.tinypic.com/2cp25xx.png

Given that would be a wonderful possibility for a hacker to do a drive by attack and view your recovered account including new super secure passwort in realtime.

So use only 'https://mtgox.com' and better close any browser window before visiting your recovered account.

Even better, close every browser window and use a virtual machine to visit your account.
106  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Wallet Safety on: June 20, 2011, 04:39:18 AM
Anyone can fall victim to viruses and Trojans. Prudent behavior may reduce the risk. The risk itself, however, can not be eliminated. If you're unlucky, all you need is a web visit to become a Trojan horse (driveby attack) victime.

So it's very important to improve wallet safety as discussed by Gavin for example.

But as long as we have to use insecure Bitcoin software (Bitcoin 0.3.23-win32-setup.exe) we should be arare that any Trojan can steal all our coins easily if we used default install procedure of Bitcoin.

One possible way to improve wallet safety might be to install the Bitcoin software within a virtual machine (VirtualBox for example). What is the opinion of the forums about it?

PS:

Another problem arises out of the fact that your own faults (crash the virtual machine, problems with backup and restore of wallet.dat etc) can easily lead to a loss of all coins.

It seems therefore desirable to integrate a a foolproof backup / restore function into Bitcoin software.
107  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (1.5Thash/s) on: June 20, 2011, 03:42:32 AM
Security warning:

MtGox was hacked today and all account informations leaked. If you're using same passwords for mtgox and pool, it is strongly recommended to change it as soon as possible using following link:

http://mining.bitcoin.cz/accounts/password/reset/
Hi Slush,

Fortunately I have a different password for your pool.

But I would like to change my Email-address to get rid of that new TradeHill Spam.

Could you explain in short what I have to do to change my email address in your pool?

Or do I have to create a new account for that pupose?

Martin

PS:
By the way, you are doing a great job

If necessary could you explain in detail please what steps are necessary when using GUIMiner. Do we have to change the content of the 'servers.ini' file in the guiminer folder? and what changes are advisable?

Thanks

On the same profile you have open for slush in guiminer now:

1. Chose "other" from the server dropdown box instead of slush's pool.
2. Under "Host:" put "api.bitcoin.cz".
3. Make sure Port is 8332
4. Username and password should have been kept from the old profile. If not, just put them in as normal for slush's pool. Same for the flags.
5. That's it.
Thanks, Justsomeforumuser.

What you describe is definitely the solution for the moment I used in one of my machines already and File/save settings will make it stay after a reboot of that system.

But coming back after some weeks to other machines it would be better you could use your GUIMine by intuition what means select 'Slush' and not 'Other' when you want 'Slush'.

To get 'Slush' working with 'api.bitcoin.cz' I guess you have to change the server.ini file in the guiminer folder.

The server.ini file has got server sections, the first one being:
Code:
"name": "slush's pool",
"host": "mining.bitcoin.cz",
"url": "http://mining.bitcoin.cz",
"port": 8332,
"balance_token_url": "http://mining.bitcoin.cz/accounts/token-manage/",
"balance_host": "mining.bitcoin.cz",
"balance_url": "/accounts/profile/json/%s"
where you have to exchange 'api' for 'mining' as I guess, correct?

Unfortunately it is necessary because I need to split site/mining traffic to improve firewall rules.

So I'll teach my machines to visit "api.bitcoin.cz" instead of "mining.bitcoin.cz" - Thanks Slush

109  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (1.5Thash/s) on: June 14, 2011, 10:51:48 AM
Btw pool is in good condition now, feel free to connect. I'd like to say 'thank you' for all your support, although answering every email and PM was impossible.
Grats Slush.

Everything seems working again (without changing anything on my mining machines).

Do you think it's really necessary to switch to a new adress like api.bitcoin.cz. I would prefer not to, as you never should change a running system.

If necessary could you explain in detail please what steps are necessary when using GUIMiner. Do we have to change the content of the 'servers.ini' file in the guiminer folder? and what changes are advisable?

Thanks

112  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CPU effect on 2x 6870 mining operation? on: June 14, 2011, 05:13:02 AM
Hi guys,

I have the choice of using either an old Intel E2140 low power cpu or an E5300 slightly newer but I assume uses more power CPU.

Is there any benefit performance wise going to the e5300 or should I stay with the 2140 and save $$$ on power?

In principle the CPU doesn't matter. Any CPU will be good for GPU mining, and GPU mining only makes sense.

But perhaps you will see an indirect effect when using more than one GPU on a single board.

In this case your CPU might be 100% busy because the newest version of the underlying openGL is broken for multi GPU systems.

Even though performance for a multi GPU system usually can't be increased by upgrading to a better CPU, as openGL will keep any CPU 100% busy.

113  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trading/exchange/tax questions on: June 14, 2011, 05:04:23 AM
I know it's not a pleasent thing but has anyone even thought about tax issues? Smiley Or are you supposed to be a pro and know all about these things before you start trading?
Bitcoins becoming a kind of world money would be nice.
And in this case paying a fair share of your income as tax keeping the world going around would be nice too.

But I fear it will be different. Countries trying to enforce unfair taxes and people trying to pay no tax at all.
114  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Whitelist Requests (Want out of here?) on: June 14, 2011, 02:01:24 AM
I would let all of you whitelisters out if I had the privileges necessary....
Does that mean I have to do 5 silly Newbie posts here and wait four hours to free myself for posting in Shlush's Mining thread?
115  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Whitelist Requests (Want out of here?) on: June 14, 2011, 01:46:00 AM
