101  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: To people who are technically versed: Will the HD 7xxx series be good at mining? on: July 03, 2011, 04:02:19 PM
Can someone please verify that the AMD HD7000 Cards won't have the Int32 Right Rotate Operation (very useful for SHA-256).

I can't find it in any rumor about the upcoming HD7000 series.

And you won't find confirmation anywhere because it has not been removed, v_alignbit_b32 is still there.
Here is a partial dump of the Southern Island's instruction set: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1561886&postcount=365

Under vector instructions, there is v_alignbit_b32

This homepage (german) says, that the upcoming HD7xxx chip will have 3200 Shader Cores and about 6.08 TFlop/s. But unless AMD releases official informations, we should be careful with this informations.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Why_a_GPU_mines_faster_than_a_CPU
And finally in this wiki there is an explanation why ATI is better for mining than Nvidia. If the HD7000 really has 6,08 TFlops and does support INT32 Right Rotate, we will see about 750 MHash/s.

Why do i make this prediction?
Simply a not overclocked HD5850 has 250 MHash/s with about 2 TFlop/s. A GTX480 reaches 105 MHash/s with 1.4 TFlop/s. The INT32 RR Operation gives ATI an advantage of 1.9 for SHA-256 hashing. Together with the higher Peak Performance of the HD5850, the 5850 should be about 2.6x faster than a GTX480, which is nearly true.

I know the HD7000 cards will use a newer architecture similar to NVIDIA, but Mining performance seems to depend linear to the peak performance of a video card. The reason why ati cards are more efficient seems to be just the INT32 Right Rotate Operation, which can be performed in one operation on ATI cards, but needs 3 operations on Nvidia cards. So it's very important to know wether the HD7000 support this operation in order to predict the Hashrate.
The specs posted on that site are pure speculation. No one knows the actual specs of the new cards, but we do know the underlying architecture and we know (via the instruction set dump from the drivers) that AMD's GCN (Graphics Core Next) does support the INT32 Right Rotate Operation.

...show me a 6970 pulling 445MH/s at 1ghz core like the 5870 does.
Here:
...cut image out...

I have it at only 950core/1375Memory doing an average of 460+MH/s (values fluctuate between 457.8, 460.5, 468.7). Still, a 5870 is far more efficient at mining since the GPU is smaller by half a billion transistors, it has half the ram clocked at a lower speed and at lower voltage plus the PCB is less complex (less layers).

WTF.

What SDK? Can you post all the flags you're using? That's insane.

Besides using Vista, I've never been able to get that on my 6970s let alone on that clock. I have to push it to 1ghz to get even close and I'm still 20 mh/s short. Getting 460 with aggression at 7?

I'm extremely confused. I've tried a zillion combos on win7 and linux I don't understand how you get that speed. Could Vista really boost it by that much?
No, Vista is largely irrelevant. I just put that in there for full disclosure. My performance is achieved through the various kernel tweaks posted on the forums. These tweaks appear to have a greater benefit on the VLIW4 architecture of the HD69xx (Cayman) cards than the VLIW5 architecture of the HD5K (Cypress) family.

Apparently the 7xxx series will have about the same mining power as the current cards, as AMD is more than happy with the shaders they have now
The shaders they have now are gone, no more VLIW5/4 for HD7K because it's a completely new architecture which I linked you to. You were talking out of your ass, I corrected you. Deal with it.  Wink
104  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miners quitting en masse -- so it begins. on: June 30, 2011, 09:09:54 AM
Selling up while a 6970 is still a good card and not superseded by 7xxx isn't a bad idea.

Apparently the 7xxx series will have about the same mining power as the current cards, as AMD is more than happy with the shaders they have now. The improvements they make to the architecture will solely benefit other aspects of graphics rendering, and possibly power consumption (though not by a significant amount).

By the time you see the 7xxx series on shelves, you'll be breaking even with the electricity bill, if that.
Please do not make assertions based on your limited/lack of knowledge. Here: http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/AMD-Fusion-System-Architecture-Overview-Southern-Isle-GPUs-and-Beyond
You can't possibly estimate nor predict the hashing power of products based on this new architecture without knowing the numbers of CU's and only AMD knowns that. Also, products based on this new architecture will be available for purchase in Q4 of this year.

What do you offer that is not already offered by heatware or the #bitcoin-otc web of trust? Those 2 services are free btw.

Apparently Heatware or w/e doesn't offer much, because I have never heard of them.

Your lack of market research is not a valid excuse to dismiss established and free competing services. Heatware has been around for over a decade, there is also resellerratings.com which has also been around for more than a decade. Remember YOU are the unknown here and have to be the more compelling solution and sorry a domain name is not enough specially when people have to put money up front.
Quote
It really doesnt matter what you offer if you arent advertising your service.
By advertizing you mean spamming 4 different subforums from the same board like you just did?
Quote
I think a better question might be what does target offer that walmart doesn't or vice-versa.
I think an even better question is what credentials do you have that guarantees you won't take people's money and run. Heatware and Resellerratings are trusted and recognized because they gave people that guarantee by not asking any money up front to make use of their services.
Heck, this thread in the forums already offers a better value than your website and it's also free: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=484.0

And the average person doesn't use IRC, but the average person has heard the term BBB before.
This community is not for the average person. I would argue most people familiar with bitcoins do know and have used IRC. This again reflects your poor or lack of market research because you are not familiar with your market's demographics.
Quote
So name recognition in combination with a actual website you can access in a heartbeat is what I offer.
Not enough when competing services with an established history offer the same for free. I think a revision of your business model is in order to be truly compelling. If you had started by being donation based and later on offered value add services for a fee you would gain more traction, but feel free to disregard my criticism since that's your prerogative.

Quote
Plus a rating system, comments, etc. Plus we can actually dig a little if we want where a irc bot cannot.
Already offered by resellerratings and heatware as well. Again, you are the unknown trying to break ground here, is there any more substance to this other than a domain name?

If you understand how the better business bureau works,
then you will be able to understand how this works.
Do you? The BBB does not require consumers to pay when filing a complaint.

108  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why are much people mining with less than 100 Mh/s ??? on: June 27, 2011, 08:39:08 PM
A good number of those people are people who started mining a long time ago, long before any of you came here trying to make a quick buck. If they've stuck with it for this long it's probably because they truly believe in the project and I would cheer if they ever got a block. Stop projecting your hate towards them just because they are making it more difficult for you to make a quick buck. Long term adoption > short term greed.

I have sigs and avatars disabled on these forums but I bet the people crying about cpu miners have a tradehill referall code in them.

P.S: It could also be a bunch of botnet miners in which case you can cry all you want, it wouldn't do much good.

Did you turn on the old monitor? You can't just leave it off otherwise the circuit is not complete. Think about it for a second. It's like you screwed in a light bulb and expect it to turn on without flipping the switch.

P.S: Another thing you can do is start the mining software with the primary card hooked up to your main monitor, then switch that primary monitor to the secondary card and it should detect it.
116  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: does the mining software connect to a centralised server? on: June 25, 2011, 09:18:19 PM
They are not connected to a central server.   That is part of the reason why it is awesome.

You find out the reason why yourself, there is no laymens terms for the depth of what goes behind Bitcoin working.  Sadly, this is the reason why it works and why geeks love it.
You are wrong. Over 300 posts and you don't even know how this works...

First let's make the distinction between the actual bitcoin client, and the mining software because they are two different things. His question was about the mining software connecting to a central server.
Now, when you mine solo your mining software does not connect to anyone but your own local bitcoin client in server mode. The actual bitcoin client does connect to everyone else that is running it because it needs to receive updates of the ever growing block chain and if you manage to solve a block on your own it needs to send out a notice to the network that you did so.

When mining for a pool, yes, your mining software does connect to that pool's central server(s) (most pools now have multiple servers located across the globe to spread the load) to get work assigned to you.
117  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tradehill or MtGox on: June 25, 2011, 08:49:21 PM
See the r on the link? That is why I will never join tradehill. As long as that stupid referral program exists which encourages people to spam their stupid link, I will never trade on tradehill.
Same. You also can and should report his referral code. Everyone that spams it like he just did gets their code blacklisted/disabled.
118  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: graphics card in PCI x1 on: June 25, 2011, 08:46:19 PM
The secondary card needs to be hooked up to a display or a dummy plug, otherwise the graphics driver will not initialize it.
119  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why is ATI so much better than Nvidia? on: June 25, 2011, 06:24:55 PM
anyone know when the 7000s series are coming out?

reference cards should be out Q1/Q2 2012
Try Q4 2011.
