101  Economy / Speculation / Re: someone shorted 5K BTC on bitfinex - wow - what a brave move! on: October 30, 2015, 11:31:21 AM
Does not seem closed yet: https://bfxdata.com/swaphistory/btc

I guess it can give us some fireworks later.

I am not sure on how to read that chart all I see is a spike for 6382 Bitcoin on October 29 and a chart that seems to be at that stabalized at that new high level, but I presume they might be testing to see if the market swings back in their direction instead of rebalancing at this point that or as already mentioned they are placing a hedge in this market.
102  Bitcoin / Press / [2015-10-29] Fairfax enters the growing world of bitcoin on: October 30, 2015, 11:05:19 AM
It's the little things that are a sign of progress towards everyday adoption and this is just a sample of it, albeit with minor errors in the content it's still a fair sign of progress (amazon accepts bitcoin part later in the article)
-

On Sept. 30, a Shell gas station just off Chain Bridge Road became home to Fairfax County’s first bitcoin ATM.

The sleek novelty of the bitcoin machine, which was installed by the company Virtual ATM LLC and sits beside the gas station convenience store’s entrance, stands out amidst its mundane surroundings and in comparison to the relative modesty of a nearby regular ATM.

“This particular location we like because there’s a lot of traffic going by here, it’s near George Mason University, and more importantly, it’s open 24 hours a day,” John McKee, Virtual ATM’s founder and owner, explained.

Bitcoin is a form of digital money, though the Internal Revenue Service currently classifies it as an asset rather than a currency. The ATM lets customers convert cash into bitcoins or vice versa. McKee refers to the transaction as a “handshake” between the physical world and the virtual one.

The Fairfax Shell station houses one of four bitcoin kiosks in the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. area. The other three are located at the restaurant Spice on Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, The Diner on 18th Street in D.C., and the Amsterdam Falafel Shop on 14th Street in D.C.

103  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Bitcoin Circle Tax Question on: October 29, 2015, 06:27:22 AM
I'll take a shot at this but not 100% certain myself as I do not use circle.

I presume that since you put the coins into Circle they are already taxed at some point previous to being deposited there in Circles logic.
However if you want to buy coins from them they become taxable when you turn them into cash and withdraw to a bank account.
Simply put its tax free until its converted into USD and then deposited in a bank.

1.  First off, does that mean even if my balance was 0... I would have to check both of these options before i continue?  I have around $5.50 in my circle usd account at the moment.

Presume not it's default setting is likely what you put into it first aka Bitcoins then it showed the exchange rate equivilent in USD

2.  Even if my account was in bitcoin currency and not USD, wouldn't that mean when i sell the bitcoins to circle and get credited with an ACH transfer, well that is considered a taxable event?

Not until its withdrawn to a bank account as the USD can sit on the site but would not have any cash value till a bank order was recieved, perhaps they send a Tax Form at the end of the year.

3.  Are transfers from circle or coinbase to bank account reported to the irs?

To my knowledge yes, if the sum is large enough they report it to the FDC or IRS as part of their KYC/AML procedures and you would have different levels of account verification.

4. If I choose to convert back to US dollars, this is considered a taxable event.

Does that mean its automatically reported to the IRS even if i did like a 5 dollar transfer.

(Not really the IRS would not care about $5)
It has bigger fish to fry such as Bitcoin sellers who make it a job etc without declaring it as their occupation.

5.  I'm assuming whether its checked or not, well any time you go from coinbase or circle to your bank acct, you are selling bitcoin and thus whether you checked anything or didn't have option to check this like on circle, it would be the same thing?

Sounds about right to me when its linked to a bank account it becomes taxable at the point of transfer and not before.
104  Economy / Gambling / Re: Someone just won 52.800 BTC on Dragon's Tale on: October 29, 2015, 06:16:24 AM

What a lucky guy! won a huge amount of money, just playing in a MMO, maybe it was his day .

Btw, here's the link of the site: www.dragons.tl

A bit slow on the response to this but I went to check it out and it's a neat looking site
Thanks for that.
105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin CEO spent stolen funds to Buy Sex on: October 29, 2015, 06:11:50 AM
So it wasnt just the gox depositers that got fucked then

It's a circle fuck I guess, I would not put it past Karpeles to go get some action using Bitcoin funds.
Haven't looked at the settlement of Bitcoins in a long time as well so I might need to check on whats occuring in the Gox Case later.
106  Economy / Speculation / Re: First Golden Cross in the History of Bitstamp on: October 29, 2015, 06:07:59 AM
I'll have to take your technical analysis at face value that it is the first golden cross in the history of Bitcoin.
The history of Bitstamp was the OP, not the history of Bitcoin. Here's a chart of MtGox 2010-2014 and there almost one in June 2012, but not as clear as this one.

Your right I was assuming it was an average index and misread that title, thanks for the correction.
And unlike Gox I doubt we have a Willy Bot this time around pushing the trend. (Or we have a lot more than 1 this time  Wink)
107  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread oct 15th to oct 29th picks are closed!! With a bonus reward. on: October 29, 2015, 04:52:16 AM
Oct 29 2015 62,253,982,450 2.25% 445,631,364 GH/s

An interesting round that really was a close call congrats
108  Economy / Speculation / Re: Official 2015 Bubble Thread on: October 28, 2015, 08:02:48 AM
Weekly parabolic SAR just went into raging bull mode. We just broke 300$ psychological barrier. We have been in green 6 weeks in a row. I declare this the official start of the 2015 Shit-Hits-the-Fan Bubble. Next stop: Canis Majoris.

I will join the program and the bullish sentiment for this month
Let's see how far it can go  Cheesy
109  Economy / Speculation / Re: If it goes to $275, are you going to keep faith or just give up save the little. on: October 28, 2015, 07:34:26 AM
the despair phase is the bastard one, because it's the one that you don't know how much it will last, while bubble normally, don't last very long

i also think we are in a very long despair phase, the halving is the only thing remained that will force an exit from it

I agree the despair phase this time around was much longer and far wider than anything else, it broke the year to year trend where Bitcoin was higher every year since its inception and in addition the period at which it was steadily declining lasted for months.
Now that we might be seeing an exit the remnants of the false range of $400-$500 is still on the minds of long term holders so we might just start to see if people will start becoming bullish or nervous yet and break through a long-run target.
110  Economy / Speculation / Re: First Golden Cross in the History of Bitstamp on: October 28, 2015, 07:27:48 AM
I'll have to take your technical analysis at face value that it is the first golden cross in the history of Bitcoin.
As investopedia says
-
As long-term indicators carry more weight, the Golden Cross indicates a bull market on the horizon and is reinforced by high trading volumes . Additionally, the long-term moving average becomes the new support level in the rising market.

Technicians might see this cross as a sign that the market has turned in favor of the stock.
-
In other words this is the definition of a bullish state.
111  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC climbing in a slow stable climb on: October 28, 2015, 07:25:07 AM
I think it will accelerate faster and faster. Chinese are buying like crazy. A repeat of late 2013. Brace yourselves!

Yes new money flow is the prime factor and accelerating the new wave. China is having more power mining now they decided to benefit from bitcoin booms. Both are good for bitcoin ecosystem. Lets wait for the prices go beyond previous high.

It's time to be a bit nervous but also optimistic that we will see prices appreciate.
As it is the rise has been fairly steady but not rapid which to me signifies a stable but good increase in the value of Bitcoin to users, and with china having more investors is always a good sign for it.
112  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Still use blockchain? on: October 28, 2015, 07:16:16 AM
I hear some people to reccommend others to stop using blockchain and use blocktrail. I also know that blockchain is down or attacked often. What should i do?

It depends on your preference, if you have your wallet.dat file which is sent to you from blockchain when you make your account you can still manually send, assuming you don't want to install Core then having two wallets in case one is down splits the risk of failure from any one service in half and ensures that you will be able to use one if the other fails.

I guess you should just make a spare wallet and keep blockchains as well.
113  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hardware Prospects for 2015-2016 Mining on: October 28, 2015, 07:09:08 AM

The prospects for the home miner is not good.   Centralization is increasing along with the infrastructure requirement (case & point - SP50).  I think we will see a rise in the private funding of mining cooperatives or mining royalty trusts.  KNC I believe is no longer selling to the public and I think Bitfury followed the same path.
I think the year for home miner will have some, but lower and lower machines for just home on 110/120.

A quick question there I know 220/240 is cheaper electricity but would that mean most North American users would need to use converters on 110/120 lines presuming home mining goes the route of building units that cannot transform electrictity voltages both ways?

They actually don't need a "converter" it is more equipment then say a plug you put in wall.  You need to actually get better guage electrical wire to handle the higher amps.  Also need a different circuit breaker that is set up for 220/240 depending on electricity.

It's actually not that uncommon in US a lot of dishwashers and a  few items use them. But most houses don't put in extra 220/240 in us for items.  So you have to get it installed or install it yourself (depends on local ordinances and your knowledge in the area).

Thanks, your right there are 220/240 Lines in use in North America it's just that they tend to be hidden because their designated to appliances and the sort, which is why I never really noticed those lines as they are always in use powering the fridge dishwashers laundry etc.

I'm used to seeing 110/120 sockets for everyday uses and forgot about those ones, although changing all the wires in a house is a far larger project for a dedicated miner, the only time I considered full wire changing myself is when our home line to the web was replaced with Cat 6 cables outside the house as that was what the ISP provides but the original cables installed a long time ago inside the house were left to the home users to connect for the last mile.

At this time, the only "home" units available (and that seems to be spotty the last couple weeks, Bitmain appears like it might be waiting on the next batch of chips from the foundery to start selling more units) are the S7 Antminers - but that appears to be about to change.
Avalon has announced their new Avalon 6 unit due shortly (next month I think?).
Lketc/BW.com announced a couple months ago a home-level miner due probably in December - though exact specs on THAT unit have been a bit spotty.

Innosilicon likely has at least 2 miner designs in the works as well, one for SHA256 based on their S3 one for Scrypt based on their A4.

SFARDS seems to have faded back into the woodwork, no news at all on when/if they plan to put more of their SF100 units on sale.
My suspicion there is "bad board level reliability, took the unit back to the drawing board for a redesign".

So still floating with a few theoretical choices but not completed designs, at the minimum it seems like their still may be a few choices left for Home-Mining in the future thanks for that.
114  Economy / Gambling / Re: Someone just won 52.800 BTC on Dragon's Tale on: October 28, 2015, 06:53:07 AM
Dragon's tale: A MMO game where you gamble bitcoins. BTW @OP not believing any stupid thing until a TXID is shown.

We have a MMO game where you gamble Bitcoins?
That's news to me although your right about the TXID if they did win that is an impressive sum.
115  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Hits Highest Level Since August on: October 28, 2015, 06:50:50 AM
Currently $303 at Coinbase which is based on Bitfinex price, I think. We will be over 320 tomorrow, October 28, 2015.

i think we'll see traders take profits before we can expect the price to go up more. i think it will go down to around $290 and then go up to $310 after a week or so.

Perhaps looking at a poloniex chart what I see is a rally for a long term trend
https://poloniex.com/exchange#usdt_btc
Either it will go back down because of the steepness and consolidate a bit more or it will push up.
116  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread oct 15th to oct 29th picks closed. on: October 28, 2015, 06:49:26 AM

I still think with s-7's arriving on weds we will go close to 4.5%

Good luck to any one that is close.

as A complete aside I have decided my batch 1 machine is best at freq 593  I get 4780gh use 1188 watts gives me 0.2485 watts at the wall.

So my second piece of gear comes tomorrow. I moved the first one out of the bedroom into the garage so sound is not a problem.

It would take a bit of time to set them up, although it most likely will impact the tail end of this round.
Anyways good to hear your miners are about to ship from personal experience that and the price rally will mean the next picks will be boiling up for some solid rises.
117  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you agree people barrow money for gambling? on: October 28, 2015, 06:46:13 AM
I think many of the gamblers even when they don't have money for gambling but they barrow money for gambling. Do you agree on this?

Yes, which is why there are always Pay-Day Loans located near Casinos
They know that if the person loses they will still have to pay the loan and the gambler knows if they win big a few bucks is not a big deal.
118  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Price Hits Highest Level Since August on: October 27, 2015, 05:51:37 AM
I am keeping my fingers crossed for it to pass the $300 barrier once again. Maybe the influx of chinese users will help.

At present it is testing a range between 280 and 290
It will breakthrough in my opinion the question is if it can make it in the next few days or if it will get stuck here for a while longer.
Either way its been a good month seeing how op was at 247 ish
119  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Choose the most used type of wallet on: October 27, 2015, 05:47:23 AM
A combination of software and web wallets myself
Small but usable amounts in one wallet and cold storage for the other once the amount gets large enough
120  Economy / Economics / Re: Loans in BTC on: October 27, 2015, 05:26:50 AM
Long-term loans in BTC are possible? Because of defation.

There used to be a service called coinlenders that loaned BTC to people after trying to give them a credit rating
The service collapsed and the market has primarily been in the lending section since.
BTCAssets does this to a limited extent as well with WebofTrust
