101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 16, 2017, 04:47:20 PM
1600 contract and 50000 sia coin went to shit cause the new version will not load after I upgraded from 1.2.1 to 1.3.1  Says it encounters a fatal error and then hangs with error messages.  So bumbed, what a letdown.

Check this post for solving those issues: https://blog.sia.tech/troubleshooting-the-recent-hardfork-ca77e0b17f0f

BTW, coins are never lost because of a wallet issue. This is a blockchain: coins do not live in wallets, but in the blockchain, and as long as you keep the recovery seed, you'll have access to your funds
102  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 16, 2017, 03:32:15 PM
What will happen to mining difficulty? Does anyone know?

In the last hardfork of last week a change in the Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm was introduced to correct the difficulty every block instead of every 3-4 days. However there is a bug that is targeting to 30 minutes blocks instead of the usual 10 minutes, what is making the difficulty to be 3x what it should be.

In the upcoming 1.3.1 version (currently in beta-testing, general release next week) a new hardfork will be introduced at block 139000 (in about 6 weeks) to correct this bug in the DAA and return the difficulty and the block time to normal values.

guys, my wallet 1.3.0 wan't sync??
what can  I  do?

Hey @pinhead77, check this tool to recover connectivity: https://www.siastats.info/nodes.html Some of the commands may fail if those nodes do not accept more connections, but keep trying adding more nodes until you connect successfully to 2 or 3. If you refresh the page or click on the button, more peers will be shown. So far everybody with this issue has recovered the connectivity with this fix

Hi, I tried to connect to this nodes, but recieve only refuse mesages. Do I need to keep copy and paste them more than once? Is there more nodes I can reach? I have a lot of sia in my wallet, i'm very upset with that issue...

No just try each node once. Keep trying more nodes. The website has a database of 30 different nodes and will show you 5 random each time, so just keep adding more nodes and refresh the page if you tested 5 already

105  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: SC - Siacoin hardfork with airdrop announced on 16th DEC due to wallet crash on: December 14, 2017, 08:01:48 PM
This is fake news.

There will be hardfork of Sia in approximately 6 weeks (at block 139000) to correct a bug in the latest Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm. But it will not be an "airdrop" as it will not be a contentious hard fork: all the users, exchanges and miners will adopt the new consensus rules (included in the upcoming 1.3.1 release), so the legacy blockchain will be abandoned.

Please, stop spreading confusion among users and cite your sources whenever you announce something as important as this
Thanks for the info Hakkane.
However, I'd like to point out that you failed to cite the source of your own information too.
So, we now have two conflicting reports with no sources cited...hmm....

Fair enough.

These are some posts from the official Discord server of Sia. @Taek is the CEO of Nebulous (company developing Sia). In the first post he announces for all the beta-testers the new RC2 version of the upcoming software 1.3.1 of the client (it will be released in a few days officially) and some of its features, including the fork at block 139000. In the second and third posts I ask about the ETA of that block and he answers that in about 6 weeks.

BTW, I am a moderator of the Discord server of Sia and the author of the website siastats.info , so I am in the loop of everything happening in Sia.

Besides, if there was to be a hardfork with an airdrop, don't you think there would have been more general announcements from the developing team like in the last hardfork of last week?

Best,

When SIa update to ver 1.3.1

How do I get to 1.3.1??? On their website they only have 1.3.0 listed to download.

The final version is not yet released. Yesterday developers published the Release Candidate 2 for beta-testers. That version is not recommended for final users.

If everything goes well, the final version should be pushed in a few days
109  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 12, 2017, 04:32:08 PM
Hakkane,
how many different SIA wallets are there?

The only complete one is the official client of Sia, that includes a wallet: https://sia.tech/apps/

There are also a couple of cold storage options. The generate you some addresses and a recovery seed to access the funds in the future, so you can send there funds for long-term savings. If you want to move the funds elsewhere, you'll need to download the full client and use the recovery seed provided by the cold wallet. This one, for example, is developed by one of the Core team developers, so it is 100% legit: https://github.com/avahowell/sia-coldstorage/releases

There is also a non-official Android app with wallet capabilities, but I would personally not trust it for large amounts of funds. In the past it suffered issues withdrawing funds too.
110  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 11, 2017, 05:44:29 PM
Hopefully someone can answer this question.

I have a spare raspberry Pi 1 (b+).

Would it be possible to use this to host a sia node on siaberry,  and use this node with a storage contract as NAS?  Not for steaming, but just to store large files i don't use so often.  I mean provided the SD card is big enough for the OS and blockchain.  Then buy 1 or 2 TB with a contract?

If it is possible, does anyone know of any guides how to set this up.

Unfortunately Sia only works on 64-bit CPUs, thus being impossible to run it on a RPi 1b+... It its however possible to run Sia on a RPi3.

If I understand you, your plan is using a RPi as a mini-NAS backed up on the cloud of Sia. That should work perfectly, but I would recommend you to keep files locally too. The Duplicati integration of Sia can help you a lot for that task.

Also consider a distribution created by a contributor of the community (@Kete) called SiaBerryOS: https://www.reddit.com/r/siacoin/comments/6pzfeh/introducing_siaberryos_a_linux_operating_system/ It is meant not for renting, but for hosting data of the network. However it could be worth you take a look at it. Maybe you can adapt it to your needs

Thanks for the information about this. I also think that speed and scalability are key components that need to be addressed to be superior than the competition. Do you know what the next version bring to the network in details? Or can you point me towards the source where I can read up on it? Thanks in advance!
So what is this update about if I may ask? What will it improve?

thanks.

ur doing a great job btw!

Thank you!

The 1.3.1 release will focus on these elements:
  • Optional wallet auto-unlock on startup: This is a feature much demanded by hosts
  • UI overhaul: The graphical elements are being redesigned, so the UX looks more clean and modern. Also, new explanatory elements are going to be added to assist new users to understand how to create an allowance for renting storage space, and more detail to the reports of how the funds are being expending during the contracts
  • Renter overhaul: The whole backend code for renters is being redesigned. Without going into much technical detail (check the GitHub of Sia for details): a) the current version has problems of uploads being stalled, that's being fixed, b) currently the performance of Sia on a renter slows down when he approaches 5TB of uploaded data, so this is being optimized to allow up to 40TB (further increases are planned for the future); c) reduction in the RAM memory usage; d) a totally new filesystem that will allow nested folders to be uploaded; e) A feature called WAL (write ahead log) that will improve reliability of data upload and prevent data loss; f) many new parts of code that while they don't have an immediate use, will be the foundation of all the future features of Sia (like file sharing, recovery of files just with the seed, synchronizing files between two computers or file streaming)
  • Connectivity fixes: There is an issue that is making 1.3.0 nodes loss sometimes the connectivity to other peers. This is being corrected
  • Difficulty adjustment algorithm (DAA) fix: The recent hardfork for changing the DAA presented an unexpected bug, and a new hardfork will be introduced in this version of the software to correct it

And speaking about connectivity: if you are using the Sia client and your client is unable to sync to the latest block or you made a transfer but your client does not show it in the balance, try this workaround: https://www.siastats.info/nodes.html
111  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 09, 2017, 07:03:50 PM
Alright, if so then this coin was also just a target of too early speculation as many in the space are. What features are you referring too? I thought that the SIA platform was already up and running for some time isnt it?
But in general I stick with my statement, marketing is key in this space, it has become more important than being able to deliver on your promises, therefore if you dont do it, other projects will have an advantage over you, even if your project has better features etc. I think one should not underestimate this in the current times.

Yes, the network is already working, and currently 3300 Terabytes of storage are available of which 100 are in use.

The problem is that the part of the code for renters needs to be optimized, to improve speed, scalability (currently renters can't upload more than 5TB) reliability and the ability to recover your files just with your recovery seed. All those items are in the roadmap, and actually the next version 1.3.1 that is about to be released on the next days will be a huge step forward in that direction.

Yup, at least that, to keep investors on track so that they dont loose faith after loosing a lot of money while holding on to SIA. Some regular updates here from the devs would really do good as well.

The developers are being extremely transparent writing weekly reports about the development of Sia and other regular updates. Just check the #announcements channel on the Discord of Sia or the official Reddit

Can I run the forked client in the datadir of the old directory, so I won't have to download the whole chain again?
Thanks.

Just replace the installation with the files of the new version and you won't need to sync the blockchain again. For more details, check: https://siawiki.tech/client/updating_the_interface

Hi I sent 3k SIA form my wallet to Bitterex here is the trans ID 1a79a16a97247032b93643d5c35ade135b7941c9710120f9cdfbe959740133dc

Anyone know where my coins went?

Thank you!

Wendy

Hi Wendy. Those 3360SC are included in a transaction on the block 135070, so it is already included in the blockchain and the funds are already in your address. You can check it on one of the available explorers here: https://explorer.siahub.info/hash/1a79a16a97247032b93643d5c35ade135b7941c9710120f9cdfbe959740133dc

- Are you using the last version of the client, v1.3.0? If you are using an older version, due to the hardfork of yesterday it will never sync up to that block (it is 70 blocks beyond the hardork point)

- Is your client fully sync with the network? As the transaction was done yesterday and blockchains sync chronologically, only the funds will show up in your balance once your client downloads that block very close to the 100% of the syncing process.
113  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 06, 2017, 06:37:02 PM
Ok. So today is the day of hardfork, but as i understand it will be made in few steps and there will not gonna happen split of blockchain (no new altcoin). Am i correct?

If yes - how long will take to complete this hardfork?

The fork just happened a few minutes ago and we are currently on block 135.001 :-)

No, no split or new coin generation has happened as all the miners, hosts and exchanges were updated to the client version compatible with the fork

BTW, just in case, if anyone has connectivity issues after the fork, check out this tool for connecting to more peers: https://siastats.info/nodes.html
114  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 06, 2017, 02:52:04 PM
interesting project. Where is the market for Siafunds?

- At Bisq (https://markets.bisq.network/?market=sf_btc) but they had very low volume in the last months

- Probably better at the Discord of Sia, on the #siafunds channel (https://discordapp.com/invite/sia), where trading is done "over the counter", using escrows. The user @Chanc3r has been a trusted escrow for years. Just read the last bids and offers and state yours.
115  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 05, 2017, 07:46:53 PM
My concern with SIA is that for a widespread adoption it would need a blockchain that is more "light" dont you guys think? I mean it takes literally ages to sync (I'm still on 25% and have it running for several !weeks!, of course not all day long, but several hours a day). With this kind of a heavy blockchain people wont be very pleased to participate in the SIA network dont you think? Cant there be a more convenient solution somehow?

With every new update, the initial sync time is being reduced. Right now, if your computer is using SSD (solid state disks) instead of spinning mechanical disks, the initial sync can be done under 8 hours.

Alternatively, you can download manually the blockchain (AKA bootstrapping) and be synced in just a couple of hours: https://siawiki.tech/daemon/bootstrapping_the_blockchain

Lite clients and SPV are on the roadmap of the core developers. And also independent developers are working on that.

Ultimately, take in mind that the endgame idea is that storage providers will use the Sia storage layer, so final users will instead download their software and pay the storage in FIAT, making the providers all the Sia conversion and keeping the blockchain in their servers. Final users won't even need to know what Sia or a blockchain is, and still benefit from cheap and decentralized storage
116  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 05, 2017, 02:40:11 PM
I have 5 k sia is the enough to share my hdd?

The minimal collateral required to set up a host is 2000 Sia, so you'll have enough for experimenting with hosting. However, you will need much more if you plan to host more than a few GB. But just remember all that collateral will be returned to you if you keep a good uptime (97% or more) and you keep the renter's files during all the contract (3 months by default).

After fork, when ASIC come into circulation, the price of SС will skyrocket? do you think, or will reverse the principle, because there will be a lot of coins?

No, there will be the same amount of coins generated per day after ASICs are released. In PoW coins the difficulty adjusts with the hashrate on the network, so the block time, and the reward of mined coins, remains stable. The hardfork of tomorrow precisely introduces a new algorithm for the difficulty adjustment that can cope with dramatic changes in hashrate and still keep the block time in 10 minutes.

In general all the coins that introduced ASICs in the past experimented an increase in the coin value. But of course that can't assure Sia will see the same phenomenon. BTW, ASICs will not be delivered until April-June of next year.

Wait a fork is incoming for SIA blockchain too? Please someone explain to me what kind of fork we are speaking about and what the consequences for holders of SIA will be? Do I have to do anything? I still got my SIA on Bittrex but want to transfer them to a paper wallet soon, is this advisable to do before the fork? Thanks in advance.

No consequences for Sia users. If you are using the client, just be sure you are using the version 1.3.0. Bittrex is already prepared, so they will keep working normally after the fork. For more info check: https://blog.sia.tech/reminder-upcoming-sia-hardfork-e0ffcde9ebcc
117  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 04, 2017, 08:56:43 PM
Hello,
I've been a while without tracking the coin, I only have two doubts.
1) Will a new coin be posted on this hardfork (if so, which one)?
2) About Hardfork if I have coins in Bittrex can I get the other currency?

This is a miss-conception probably due to the recent cases of Bitcoin forks aimed to create new coins (Bitcoin Cash, Gold and so).

A hardfork is just a change in the very deep rules that govern a blockchain (called the consensus set of rules) that makes old versions of the clients to become incompatible with the new mined blocks. In this case, Sia is changing the algorithm that adjusts the mining Difficulty. The new version was introduced 6 months ago, and in that version this hardfork at block 135000 was already programmed.

If a hardfork becomes contentious, and so one part of the community accepts the new rules but not the other, 2 coins emerge from the hardfork (as with Bitcoin forks)

In the case of this fork of Sia, all the community is accepting the change. Almost all the hosts are using version 1.3.0 (the compatible version), all the exchanges, all the mining pools... This hardfork is being accepted by all the parts, and so there will be no creation of a new coin. After block 135000 all the coins in circulation, mined or in exchanges will be part of the upgraded blockchain. The legacy blockchain, together with the old version of Siacoins, will be abandoned, as no one is supporting the legacy coin.

In summary, the legacy coin is going to disappear, and your exchange will issue you the same amount of coins you had in the new coin. Of course, the name of the coin will remain as "Siacoin"

Do you need more info? Check the official post about the fork: https://blog.sia.tech/reminder-upcoming-sia-hardfork-e0ffcde9ebcc
118  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 04, 2017, 04:04:41 PM
In my modest opinion, it is due to the incoming hardfork at block 135000 (in about 2-3 days):

- The hardfork news are giving a lot of visibility to Sia. Unfortunately most of the traders that move the markets do not read accurate sources of information and believed for several months the project was dying (totally false, the development has not stopped at any time and we had very good news in the last months). So more exposure in the social media lead to people read about Sia.

- A lot of traders have the miss-conception that the hardfork will drive to the creation of 2 coins in a similar was as Bitcoin Cash fork, so they are buying SC ahead of the fork. This is totally incorrect and people need to understand that this hardork will not create two coins: It is network upgrade that will make old client versions incompatible with the new rules of the blockchain. All users, miners and exchanges are going to use the new blockchain rules, and so the legacy chain will be abandoned. The Siacoin we will all use is the new one, and the legacy Siacoin will not be listed on any exchange, as no miners will mine for it, no users will use it.

Thanks for the Clarification.
Is there a expected date for the hard fork ?

It will be at block 135000 and we are currently at block 134679 (you can check the current block at https://www.siastats.info/index.html). Block time average is 10 minutes, so the hardfork is expected in 53 hours

So for a newbie here, Do we need to do anything with our Siacoin? Or just continue to hold?

If you are holding your coins in the official client, just be sure you are using the version 1.3.0. If it is an earlier version, just update. If not, you'll simply will not be able to see updated balances on your wallet, as you will not accept new blocks. However you'll always control your funds as long as you keep your recovery seed, so you can update at any moment in the future to send those coins anywhere else.

If you are holding on a exchange, it is safe to assume all the big ones are running an updated version of Sia, so they will keep operating normally (the compatible version was released 6 months ago!). However, as you probably know, holding your funds long-term on an exchange is a horrible idea as you don't control the keys of your coins, and so the exchanges can crash, can be hacked, can run away with your money, and you'll lose everything. For any coin you have, the safest place is always the official client (or a hardware wallet if the coins has one available, not the case of Sia), so you'll always control the keys that give access to the funds.

I have heard that sia is planning to launch its own campaign, what about the original concept, i mean the cloud storage services should be developed and be a success before launching a new project.
As far as we are aware, the developing company (Nebulous) does not have any other project they are preparing. Nebulous also owns a subsidiary called Obelisk that is developing ASIC miners, but the team behind it is different from the team developing SIa (with the exception of the CEO and the PR)

The Sia pump happened today is really impressive. It is like that of Nxt which had been pumped hard for two weeks.
Is there some particular reason for this pump?

In my modest opinion, it is due to the incoming hardfork at block 135000 (in about 2-3 days):

Hello everyone, I'm new, tell me about the platform?

Check the wiki: https://siawiki.tech/index

A good article to start is: https://siawiki.tech/about/introduction_to_sia

and do you encrypting, guyz?

All the data uploaded to the Sia network is encrypted by the TwoFish algorithm, considered one of the safest available.
